meanwhile has warned damascus it would have a big price to pay for the attack. let's go to washington where correspondent claire richardson is standing by clare it's been just hours since we heard about this attack but why has the u.s. been so quick to get involved here hi michelle you have the u.s. state department was quick to respond to say that it's monitoring these reports and significantly they've called for an immediate response from the international community as well as criticize russia for its ongoing support of bashar al assad's regime now it they said that it is russia who is ultimately responsible for this possible chemical weapons attack because of its continued support for the syrian government and its perhaps its strongest ally so now this all puts donald trump in a rather sticky situation if you'll remember just last week he said he wanted to
8:03 pm
pull all u.s. troops out of syria but didn't offer a clear timeline of when he was going to do it so now we're seeing him on twitter calling it the chemical weapons attack and atrocity also criticizing former president barack obama for not using military force after evidence that the syrian government carried out another chemical attack that killed almost one and a half thousand people so drunk going to have to decide whether he wants to get the u.s. out of syria as he said or take some kind of more concerted action and he's even threatened a big price in response to this alleged chemical weapons attack what are his options here. it's possible trump could pursue military strikes to try and punish the outside regime. like he did about a year ago when he carried out military strikes on an air base that followed another chemical weapons attack by the syrian government and so that was the united states first direct military action against syria and we could very well see him do
8:04 pm
that again or he could do nothing beyond criticizing the government as we've seen so the white house homeland security adviser said this week that all options aren't are on the table nothing should be taken off so this point i think it seems that anything is possible and with transform this for twitter we're lucky to find out sooner than later cleared richardson in washington thank you very much. police in the german city of munster are trying to establish the reason why a man crushed his van into a crowd outside a busy restaurant in the historic center of the city two people were killed and dozens more injured germany's interior minister has called the attack a cowardly and brutal crime. people pay their respects to the did and injured on the streets of munster. yeah it's still incomprehensible i'm very glad that nothing happened to a daughter who is very close to where it happened. it's been slow in my memory

8:08 pm
here and we're seeing live shots of the visual taking place in the cathedral behind you but can you tell us what more do we know about the victims and casualties from yesterday's events. well as you just heard in that report there that we know that there are two people who've lost their lives in their attack not including of course the attacker himself who shot himself shortly after driving into the crowd we know that it's a fifty one year old woman and a sixty five year old man who lost their lives in line with german media convention we're not identifying those who been killed what i can tell you though is that twenty others were injured in this attack hospitals say some of them are still in a critical condition as well that some of the injured may include nationals but of course it's not just. been affected by this attack we've got a lot of people gathered right now in the cathedral behind me who witnesses or

a picture really is building of a man he was very psychologically. we're hearing from police that he sent an e-mail to a number of acquaintances when he was talking about killing himself we also know that police had been aware of this man at least five times he'd been brought to their attention for various more minor crimes they were dropped but there is a very slow process in this investigation police say could be days even longer before they get a picture of exactly what. police here in berlin detained several men today suspected of planning an attack on half marathon is germany on high alert again after this weekend. that's right we know that a number of people have been detained in connection what police said was looking like it was going to be a planned for a very nasty attack and violent possibly on the boat in half marathon that took

place today tens of thousands of people took part in not of course now germany on the whole is on high alert i'm not sure if you can see behind me but there are a number of police officers firefighters eccentric gathered here i saw them a lot as i have seen a lot of them walking around the city but it's not just in light of the attack that's taken place here of course jemmy's been on alert since the christmas markets attack in which several people were killed just over a year ago there is really a lot of concern of course not just in to me but of around europe for attacks where people can just get into cars get into vans and drive into the crowds and as gemini's interior ministry put it a short time ago it is very clear just how difficult it is to try and prevent attacks like this and just how horrific they can be. thank you. now to some of the other stories making news around the world christian sewing is expected to take over as c.e.o.

actually drag on and proved to be a very long night until we see results but just a short while ago we have seen the three disaffection leader talking here to the press to the international to the national and local press is saying that this high voter turnout is due to the fear this is due to the few despotic mobilize of the voters and also he did say that x. backs or he counts on an absolute majority put if it is spotty of course if you ask opposition members they have a much different perspective on that and they say this high voter turnout is it due to a lot of frustrated hungry and who have enough and are fed up with this entire and tired migration policy of the for this government. and funny just briefly the european union is watching today's vote very closely what could have renewed a super majority for mr orbán name for europe. but basically that everything stays the same if prime minister viktor orban is going to your house for his third consecutive term in hungary he's going to continue to push
