smarts to a merchant you should find no means missed out on a boring creasing really dangerous time. this is deja vu news live from bird lame those rights on the rise again in europe hungary is nationalist prime minister viktor orban wins a landslide victory after a campaign that took a radically hardline on immigration he urges hung variance to defend their country . also coming on missiles targeted a major air base in syria at least fourteen soldiers are dead in syria and russia
12:01 pm
says that israel is to blame and after three years of losses germany's top lender deutsche bank has ousted its c.e.o. will the new man at the top be able to revive the bank's fortune. i'm sorry kelly to the program we begin in hungary where the nationalist prime minister viktor orbán has won a decisive victory in the country's general election during his campaign orbán took a hard line on muslim immigration portraying migrants as a threat to hungary scritched an identity in his victory speech he said that the result gave hungary and the chance to defend themselves and their country have a less. just you i was we won
12:02 pm
a triumphant. hungary's right wing nationalist prime minister winning he's third consecutive term in office and his fourth term overall it follows a campaign in which all band rallied almost exclusively against what he described as the poison of immigration. there's a big battle behind us. we have won a crucial victory got a chance gave ourselves a chance to defend hungary. which. was all burns populist in your roast dick messages of strained ties with the e.u. but they won his fetus party almost half the votes because of complex election laws he is on track to secure a two thirds super majority in parliament voted turnout rage close to seventy percent exceeding the past three elections it had been thought that high turnout might favor the far right opposition your big and the same to lift socialists but
12:03 pm
trailing far behind the winner the leaders of hungary second and third biggest parties ever assigned following the result. i respect the decision of the voters even if it hurts and feels bad even if one expected a lot more support. but we have to accept it as part of life and part of democracy when things go differently to what we would have liked. or been strong victory hands him increased legitimacy but it means almost certain trouble for independent media and civil groups at heart and likely more clashes with brussels. correspondent pfeifer chart is standing by now with the latest from budapest so funny we have here an overwhelming victory for viktor orbán running on this anti immigration platform what does this say about the mood in the country and
12:04 pm
what is it likely to mean for his next term. sara for the supporters of course overjoyed by the fact that once again this party claimed by an absolutely ga t. in the parliament they say that empowers not only hungary but also their leader hungary congress leader prime minister viktor orban a different perspective of course if i speak to voters who voted for center left opposition parties or even for the you'll be party on the far right they say they had hoped for a different result given that high voter turnout but that did not materialize in fact that high voter turnout seemed to have benefited mostly the fetus party and when it comes to what comes next basically what this is going to do with this absolute majority over ready today the faction leader the faction spokesperson rather of the fittest party has said that the parliament didn't even convenience department is going to convene and april but the first thing they will put into
12:05 pm
parliament on the table or on may is the shore show which in a nutshell means that the interior ministry could it dissolve certain n.g.o.s the other organizations that they find pose a national risk to national security of the country by sponsoring or supporting migrants from third countries that stay here in hungary coming from say third countries so as you can hear only one day has passed or not even since the election but already the fittest party is laying out what they are going to change once this new parliament has convened and what is that likely to mean for a year after funny because you know we see not only that action on the domestic side also orbán has promised to put an end to brussels migrant resettlement program . exactly and as we have heard yesterday in his victory speech he is also said will continue to say that he wants to defend hungary and that path has just begun and it's not over yet it's going to continue so clearly of
12:06 pm
course that does signal the promise of victory is going to push for that agenda that may lead actually to more division between. the european union but it may not just because of hungary not just because of the states but of course the other things looming a brac sick next year so the whole range of problems that the european union must face and that the european union is going to be challenged by probably. off is just being one of them funny good past thank you. and some other news now because russia and syria are blaming israel for an attack on a military base in central syria missile struck the base over night monitors say that the strikes killed at least fourteen people including iranian soldiers the development comes after a suspected chemical weapons attack was carried out on one of the last rebel strongholds duma the syrian government denies responsibility.
12:07 pm
missiles flare in the dark hours of the morning according to russian and syrian military they were fired from two israeli fighter jets though israel has refused to comment the missiles found their target an air base in the province of holmes used by the syrian regime and its allies at least fourteen fighters were killed according to observers. days earlier bombs fell in the town of duma in eastern ghouta the last remaining rebel stronghold it's alleged they were carrying chemical weapons according to the white helmets volunteer rescue group at least forty people were aged by poison gas during the attack many of them children smelling strongly of chlorine. the regime continues the intense and violent shelling barrel bombs were dropped by helicopters carrying poisonous substances. until now paramedics haven't been able to enslave because of the continuous shelling the regime is trying to wipe out this area. syria denies its government forces launched
12:08 pm
any chemical assault nonetheless international condemnation has been swift and blunt. u.s. president donald trump took to twitter blaming russia and iran for supporting syria and describing its president bashar al assad as an animal. in rome pope francis used his mass in some peter's square to denounce the attacks as unjustifiable. we pray for all the dead for the wounded for the families who suffer. there is no good war and bad war. in the end and nothing nothing can justify the use of such instruments of violence against people and unarmed populations are. the syrian army released pictures which it says shows
12:09 pm
troops moving towards duma the army dismissed claims of the gas attack as fabrications the military insists it's advancing rapidly and has no need for chemical weapons. so let's put these developments in syria into perspective for us now we have correspondent tanya kramer standing by she's joining us from jerusalem and tanya i'd like to begin first by asking you a bit more about the airstrike on the homes airbase because russia is accusing israel of carrying it out what more can you tell us. well this is very interesting because most of the intimation we get actually from the russian defense ministry on that strike they're saying two israeli planes would have carried out the strike on this base which would have been in the early morning hours here time we know that in this space the syrians to send this off hezbollah. but they also russian people working there according to the syrian
12:10 pm
observatory for human rights fourteen people have been killed and. wounded now the israeli army is not commenting on the very common for them because they usually don't come in on the. activities in syria but what's interesting is that it seems to be the deciding. that has been actually runs attacked just in february by israeli fighter jets at the time they confirmed this when at that time and rainy and according to the israeli army had entered israel yes but they had to tell you that. at this base where they're saying are. operating and at the time israeli fighter jet was down on this side but at the moment. minute turn is not commenting on on these allegations and in the meantime
12:11 pm
elsewhere in the country we do have other allegations this alleged chemical attack on that has sparked international outrage the assad regime has said to or alleged to have been behind it the u.n. security council is expect. that to me today the u.s. president donald trump also threatening syria would pay a big price in response what can we expect here. when i think we've been in that situation before because there have been alleged chemical attacks in syria but of course all eyes are now. you know what the u.s. will be doing but also the french president. has said france is considering a response to that no the timing of course no of this israeli attack is very interesting here. but the israelis have their own red lines and syria at this in any time there's a transfer of back they would attack but also they're very concerned of the ukrainian presence in israel so we would have to wait and see what reactions would
12:12 pm
really be having there in the coming days and we've been looking at very disturbing very dramatic pictures there of children actually in that area tanya cramer with the latest from jerusalem thank you tanya. let's get a quick check now of some other stories that have been making news around the world former south korean president lee has been charged with corruption is accused of receiving some ten million u.s. dollars in bribes from groups including the country's own intelligence service was in office on twenty two thousand and eight to twenty thirteen is indictment comes three days after his successor arkan hey was sentenced to twenty four years in prison for her part in a separate corruption scandal. police in germany are evaluating items confiscated in raids carried out after reports of a planned attack in yesterday's berlin half-marathon multiple vehicles and residences or searched six suspects have been arrested.
12:13 pm
helena humphrey is standing by now with some big changes at deutsche bank is at the top at the very top all change which about getting a new c.e.o. sarah affective immediately savings to take over at the helm of germany's biggest lender and i had to do it to find a veteran he's worked there for almost thirty years most recently serving as the coach deputy. the bank he takes over from john cry and he will have an uphill climb ahead of him the bank has been struggling to make profits christiane's even knows deutsche bank from the inside out the new c.e.o. has spent thirty years there rising from financial adviser to board member so he knows what he's getting into the evening replaces john cryan who took over three years ago the englishman was able to settle numerous legal disputes he downsized
12:14 pm
the bank's underperforming investment banking division cutting jobs but years of fines and penalties draining business down. deutsche bank is in a permanent state of crisis under korean's tenure the banks struggle to contain its losses cutting those losses is kristan savings top priority now and that means he'll have to untangle his predecessors mistakes most experts think that means deutsche bank will be returning to its roots in the traditional banking sector. and our financial correspondent is at the door to bank headquarters for us in frankfurt today daniel and the man at the top job effective immediately was the market reaction. now you might be surprised when you have a closer look at your trading av a big plus this morning all for percentage of buying among the top performers in the blue chip index tax and this certainly has not been the case in the past just
12:15 pm
during the last one year the share price of dogs has tumbled by more than twenty five percent and within the last three years and even went down more than sixty percent it seems that investors are optimistic that dodge of buying might be again on the right track so they like the sound of the new c.e.o. but he has not done anything yet so what's his first job when he does set about his work well we actually are learning that he sent out a letter to the employees of the lender saying that there needs to be sort of a hunter mentality inside of the bank basically he means that georgia bank needs to come back into the winning zone three years of losses just during the last a year georgia bank lost more than seven hundred and fifty million euros so he knows that he needs to deliver he also knows that he has to make sure that georgia bank will be again in the poll position among other bands worldwide which has not
12:16 pm
been really the case throughout the last time elena will talking about those toppled times of course john crying was head of the bank that he's out now was that his fault those terrible times over the state of the bank that he inherited. well some people are actually saying that john crying was not even the real problem of the lender some are actually saying that powell lied that he's the chairman off the supervisory board that he is the one that's actually giving the banga banga lots of travel we have to remember that during his term this is already now the third c.e.o. of. absolutely down here in frankfurt for us at the headquarters of deutsche bank. well france's parliament is debating a controversial rail reform today amid continued strikes by employees of the state owned s.n.c.f. railway the reform bill is up third vote early next week and unions angry that
12:17 pm
changes could be pushed through by direct to curry which they say is on the democratic protests lead to numerous train cancellations on sunday yes since yesterday a new one in five high speed trains was running the government seeking to overhaul the debt ridden railway company and reduce costs passenger rail traffic is said to be opened up to competition starting in twenty twenty two and the monopoly over the s n c s public company. was back over sarah now anemones to investigators are still searching for clues off the tragedy but some details are beginning to emerge helena especially about this man who drove a van into a crowd in the german city of months or on saturday killing two people and injuring many more police saying that he was wealthy he had many run ins with the law he also is said to have expressed suicide suicidal thoughts rather to a neighbor last week and people in munster have attended
12:18 pm
a church service for the victims. the people of meant step packed out the city's famous palace cathedral in honor of the victims of saturday's atrocity. earlier flowers were laid outside the popular pub in the old town where it happened two people were killed and dozens more injured when a forty eight year old german man crashed his van into the crowd the driver had mental problems and was known to police he shot and killed himself after the incident. fifty. i've lived in munster for forty years and hardly seen a drop of blood because the people here are so nice it's such a beautiful city one mention in the. i'm relieved i'm sirleaf but it wasn't a terror attack germany's interior minister called it
12:19 pm
a brutal and cowardly crime. i'm here today in munster to convey the solidarity and condolences of the entire government especially the chancellor angela merkel in space on the consulate police at previous petty crime charges against the driver had all been dismissed. we can only tell you that at the moment we have no indications that there is a political background or that other perpetrators were involved says iman hunt he says well there's relief this wasn't a terrorist incident it's a painful reminder of how little the authorities can do to prevent vehicles being used as weapons. and elsewhere in germany berlin the has a reputation as a liberal and a cosmopolitan city but in the last two years suspected neo nazis have carried out more than fifty arson attacks in one district in the south of the city the owner of
12:20 pm
one of the bookshops lives in constant fear and he's not the only one as we report the police have failed to call anyone to account for the crimes. nikon is a rather it's become a magnet they have. it has something coolest cafes in the capital and pleasant old apartment buildings the neighborhood is multicultural and lively. but there's another side tonight because they have been fifty incidents that involving right wing extremists over the past two years hines austin man runs a bookshop in nyc and he's been one of the targets he came under attack when he spoke out against racism and right wing populism. when i was in the time but i told him that my shop window was smashed in december twenty sixth in. the following month and with my car was torched right in front of my home from my horse and now this february the same thing happens with my new car i'm with them as it's
12:21 pm
farts like he says it's quite clear that the perpetrators are far right extremists and want to intimidate him. as are going to find others in the office has changed my life what is your life become more cautious. here in the bookshop when i've tried to identify any security weak spots. when i drive home i always think about the best place to park. them when i walk from my car to my house or mountain if there is somebody behind me i might cross the road or you never know what they might be up to money wise was this is the last of. the police suspect the culprits are local residents and may have links to the far right n.p.t. party. it's been campaigning against immigrants on the political left for years. n.p.t. members are known to have committed a significant number of acts of violence in not turn and elsewhere.
12:22 pm
is a bust young schmidt killer isn't n.p.t. activist i asked him what he thinks of the allegations that the culprits may be affiliated with his party the m.p. did. clan p.d. does not support violence against people with different political views foreigners or anyone else as a political tool and what we say is if we want to change things then only by parliamentary or political me. himself has been charged with violent crimes though acquitted each time he has however been found guilty of incitement he's also known to have associated with violently and nazis the police are investigating the far right scene over the incidents in the. police refused to give us an interview about the right wing attacks in berlin they only wanted to answer our questions on paper we wanted to know why months later series of dozens of violent attacks still remains unsolved by the time of filming we still hadn't received an answer. from
12:23 pm
the people in our current have organized protests against the far right and against the authorities failure to find the culprits. many here are campaigning for bektashi. he was shot and killed on a street a knock on an april twenty twelfth. many suspect the motive was and he immigrant sentiment or racism who's what was. that there were some leaves but i think the authorities have not been working as well as. to her and listen they should have talked to the suspects. the public prosecutors should have done their job better. on sunday a monument to put out bektashi was dedicated near the spot where he was shot for many his murder brings to mind a series of far right racist killings between two thousand and two thousand and seven the so-called n.s.u.
12:24 pm
matters and the failure of the authorities to identify the culprits automotive two years later here an icon the demonstrators say they won't give up until the crimes that have been solved. let's get more on this now we are joined now by the co-author of that story and i only conrad from d.w. news so naomi we have here around fifty attacks since twenty sixteen this sounds like a pretty big movement cause for concern here and yes indeed i mean at least almost forty attacks last year according to local activists definitely calls for concern i think a lot of these attacks show that this is a very violent group it's a group that's targeting left wing activists even people who are maybe that vocal against right wing extremists the movement itself is quite small but that doesn't make it less dangerous in a way that's even harder because it's hard to pinpoint who's involved so i think it's not necessarily the size that makes it any less dangerous why is it so hard to
12:25 pm
pinpoint who's involved i mean why does this keep happening campi authorities get it under control i mean this is what they're trained for well one would think they wouldn't one but these are obviously very professional perpetrators i mean a lot of people i talked to they can pinpoint one of the leaders as a name that everyone keeps on repeating but also if you look at the kind of attacks i mean often attacks on cars all you need is a light at to set a blaze and so it's very hard to trace these people they are obviously very good not communicating online so even though activists off the streets have people in obviously very angry i think these are. very specialized highly trained people who are doing this and it's just hard to find enough evidence to put the mind bombs our report also touched on the political level this party the n.p.t. perhaps you can tell us a little bit more about them and their significance lately well the n.p.t. is a very right wing
12:26 pm
a lot of people say the most extremist right wing party political party in germany it's insignificant at the moment though it only received zero point four percent in the last elections and twenty seventeen so from a political point of view it's not important anymore told in attempts to actually ban the party failed in front of the constitutional court because the judges said well the party is anti constitutional but it's too small to have any kind of influence but of course that doesn't mean that it's still dangerous as we're seeing a lot of the these perpetrators in our code and everything points to the fact that they're from this movement that they're from from the m d so even though they're politically not that important it doesn't mean that and dangerous you've spoken with a lot of people about this i mean just a couple of you know the people we heard from in our piece you really got that sense of fear that they had to you know walking along the streets at night really strategizing how they go about their day given this what has struck out the most you definitely fear there was there was one man who was attacked i talked to he's
12:27 pm
a local politician he's using gauged with a party a left wing party and he told me you know even just waiting for an attack to happen he knew he'd be targeted at some point so i think that's definitely something people in the cone who are politically active for who you know who help refugees they know that they might be targeted at some point but at the same time there's also a sense of people saying no we won't let nazis or near nazis dictate what we do we won't let them get away with it so there's a lot of local mobilization a lot of people coming together and i think it's also helping mobilize movements against right wing extremism and against neo nazis very own naomi conrad thank you so much for joining us to tell us a little bit about this story as we mentioned you were co-author the piece we appreciate. and with that you are up to date now on d w news i'm sarah kelly in berlin thank you very much for watching at the top of the.
