this is deja vu news live from berlin tensions at the u.n. security council russia and the united states in a better and heated exchange over an alleged chemical weapons attack in syria russia warning of grave rep recall sions if the u.s. takes military action against syrian targets also coming up with an attack on our country is atrocious and should detect but what we all stand for president trump saying he's the victim of an unprecedented witch hunt after f.b.i. agents raided the office of his longtime personal attorney. and

in the midst of a major trade spat with the u.s. trying to ease president xi jinping is promising a more open economy but will china put its money where its mouth of course. i'm brian thomas welcome to the show u.s. president donald trump has promised a swift and forceful response to an alleged chemical weapons attack in syria aid workers in the town of duma east of the capital damascus say poison gas was used to kill dozens of civilians and attack last saturday the syrian government and its main backer russia deny any responsibility it was discussed in the security council where russia and the u.s. traded harsh words over the incident. did these bombs dropped on the last rebel
9:02 am
held area near the syrian capital damascus contain chemical weapons the answer could be cause for escalation in the conflict there most of all between the united states and russia the two global powers faced off at the united nations security council in new york. russia's obstructionism will not continue to hold us hostage when we are confronted with an attack like this one the united states is determined to see the monster who dropped chemical weapons on the syrian people held to account yes. i call upon those slandering the regime to move forward with the assumption that there was no chemical weapons attack. on the russian troops have been deployed in syria at the request of the legitimate government of a country we already conveyed to the u.s. side that armed force under false pretext against syria could lead to grave repercussions as. aid workers say chlorine gas killed at least forty people and
9:03 am
injured many more in duma the u.s. and its allies want an investigation into what happened there but the u.s. may go further than an inquiry history will record this as the moment when the security council either discharged its duty or demonstrated its utter and complete failure to protect the people of syria either way the united states will respond. that response could look like this last year following another suspected chemical attack us president donald trump ordered cruise missile strikes against a syrian air base trump says military options are again on the table and action of some sort could come soon. and talk about where this is headed i'm joined by marcus carr mideast analyst from the german institute for international security affairs good morning i guess what do you think will donald trump authorize
9:04 am
military action against targets in syria i think you've been he has two options very limited strike like the. military attack a chemical weapons attack last year where the u.s. forces. military members of syria or we could see more extended to the military campaign which could take a couple of days but would you what. has the difficulty compos possible confrontation with russian forces on the ground and the greater problem is what is the political aim of this military campaign because the united states has announced exactly last week on the go one week ago that it would leave syria in military terms ok now how would russia respond to any possible merit in military action i mean there's a big difference between a limited air strike like we saw last year or a larger campaign water rushes off it's difficult to say i think russia so far has
9:05 am
avoided the direct military confrontation was insisting on the conflicting the military complains of the united states and russia and syria in particular species so it's difficult to say but i think it's pretty obvious that russia would not would not withdraw its political and military support for the assad regime you know you know russia has also come out and said it was israel that was behind the air strike. yesterday morning that we talked about on that on an air base. in syria the syrian government airbase do you see israel expanding its role in syria alongside the united states and on behalf of the west think israel has two major goals first to contain iran and the reigning influence as well as the hizbollah influence in syria to avoid a direct move to go to military confrontation if the syrian is ready to board at the golan heights and secondly to keep the united states engaged in syria
9:06 am
politically as well as militarily and therefore i think that has been maybe clear signal to the united states the israeli attack on the syrian base a clear signal to the united states do not withdraw your forces from syria keep in gate help us to contain iran ok there are a number of other very big players in the region of course inside syria iran is among them it has no terry assets you mention the go along hi it's just across the border there how would a rand respond to military action by the united states in the days ahead i think it depends on the on the on the kind of the response of the united states if it's limited as good like one year ago i think it doesn't bear a means very much military campaign which would really weaken the military infrastructure in syria would would maybe change their behavior but at the end of
9:07 am
the day i think it depends on the political program of the united states in the syria. would return as a political act of that could really contain in their own iranian influence ok now i know it's not just iran and russia turkey has signed an agreement with them there is the three of them are cooperating right now in syria what would it do if america launched a larger campaign for example inside syria i think turkey is so. satisfied to put it this way to satisfy the territorial terms it has occupied certain parts of well but syria which belonged to the ultimate and power one hundred years ago and has left open the option that it wouldn't return them to syria maybe not and annex them in legal terms but to keep them under their political and military control ok mark is gone for us today as we look forward to how the us is going to respond if it will respond to the alleged chemical attack in duma thanks very much make is. or us

president has called an f.b.i. raid on the office of his personal attorney disgraceful the f.b.i. acted in part on a referral from special counsel robert mueller now muller is of course investigating russia's alleged meddling in the twenty sixteen u.s. presidential campaign. documents seized at michael cohen's manhattan office contain what his lawyer said a privileged communications between cohen and his clients those clients include u.s. president donald trump. the f.b.i. has read prompted a furious response from trump. so i just heard that they broke into the office of one of my personal attorneys. and. it's a disgraceful situation it's a total which. an attack on our country is a true it's an attack on what we all stand for. michael cohen came under scrutiny

after he admitted to making a one hundred thirty thousand dollars payment to adult film actress stephanie clifford clifford who goes by the name stormy daniels alleges she had a sexual relationship with donald trump in two thousand and six she said cohen made the payment in return for his silence trump has denied knowledge of the payment it isn't clear if the rate is directly linked to the mother investigation into suspected russian meddling in the u.s. election or clifford's alleged hush money by the way it may spell more legal trouble for donald trump. some of the other stories making the news this hour saudi arabia's crown prince mohammed bin solve is wrapping up a visit to france as part of a global tour that seen him travel to a number of western capitals activists have protested the visit there urging french leaders to raise human rights issues with the prince over saudi arabia's role in the war in yemen. colombian authorities have arrested

richest and most influential men getting a complete growing in the u.s. senate facebook c.e.o. mark zuckerberg is due to appear before lawmakers on capitol hill the thirty three year old chief executive arrived in washington yesterday for a private meeting with some senate leaders he didn't talk to reporters but he did issue a written statement in which he apologized and he admitted that facebook did not do enough to prevent misuse of data on top of the agenda in today's hearings will be stark the birds of mission that the personal information of up to eighty seven million facebook users may have been improperly shared with political consultancy cambridge analytic got to help out with donald trump and his campaign for the white house. well until today the only time we heard secretary talking about his scandal was in a teleconference he held with
9:12 am
a handful of journalists number of days ago and this was also the first time he acknowledged that he had indeed made mistakes himself but it's clear now that we didn't do enough we didn't focus enough on preventing abuse and thinking through how people could use these tools to do harm as well and that goes for fake news for interference in elections hate speech in addition to developers and data privacy we can take a broad enough view of what our responsibility is and that was a huge mistake it was it was my mistake. why was facebook c.e.o. mark zuckerberg and told conference with journalists and joining me now in the studio is three is a locker she's a berlin based editor with weiss is actually from tel motherboard you are your tech version thanks for coming in teresa what are you expecting from mark zuckerberg big day of reckoning today well i expect a continuation of his apology tour that he has been going on for a few days now not any breaking news but hot questions not only about the that
9:13 am
scandal but also about the meddling potential meddling in the election and off russian actors and off the scope of the responsibility that facebook is going to take in the future so there's the commercial the political aspects or so there's a whole slew of things he's going to discuss but you know the misuse of data isn't that based on facebook's business model you know it collects this data and although mark zuckerberg denies it sells the data right it's right the user is the core of their product of facebook's product and i don't think that whatever change the facebook c.e.o. sheryl's about just came out i think two days ago saying a opt out model where you use this can choose to not have facebook sell that out
9:14 am
to third parties will be a paper product so it is their core business model to sell using once you consent to the terms of service that admittedly nobody reads and understands ok now it's not just facebook though i mean they own whatsapp instagram all these other platforms that are also gathering user data do you see congress moving starting today with a push for regulation of facebook and other big tech companies in the industry i can't really say if they're pushing for regulation i can see. say that they're probably going to display a lot of outrage about what happened in the past but as of now facebook has always relied on that self-regulation. model and this is also what is going to talk about today thinks that he has already fixed loopholes they're already closed self-regulation hasn't worked it's very clear it's very clear to the public there's going to be a lot of pressure on the public to regulate this industries and their rights so i
9:15 am
think what may be is that congress will ask if. he sees the new data protection laws that at being an actor on may twenty fifth in the you also in the u.s. which basically mean that users have to give a lot of content into and understanding what is being shared and where it's getting sold to. said he would like to roll out features along these lines worldwide but also say that they won't be the same for everybody ok now is that very very alone right now he's been completely abandoned which is highly unusual by the other big names in the tech industry illand most from tesla for example you know tim cook from apple no one is defending him right now what does that say about the hot water facebook is in right now well facebook is in a very soul and lonely position that it created itself because face focuses is
9:16 am
essentially the monopoly of the internet and this is because facebook has also. their competitors by essentially cloning them or buying them whenever they got too dangerous and so it's also bad for the market in a way so i think this is also why. silicon valley leaders are watching closely what's happened what's happening to this company when it swallowed up half of the internet you know we're seeing amazon for example under attack as this mega list this this monopoly you know their calls to break it up is that going to happen with facebook you know. they're big tech giants in the social media area i can't really see facebook being broken up at all facebook is still way too powerful. i can only say that i suppose facebook has created this situation very intentionally. and use their deep pockets and their influence to create that environment where it's virtually impossible for competitors to build up communities that could
9:17 am
endanger face ok so today's going to be more show than substance in the us something as i would your expected i do i know and a couple of questions will be interesting to resul ocker from vice motherboard specifically thanks so much for being with us. and we will of course be keeping you updated on testimony here deed of the news follow us on twitter for all the latest you also check out our website if you dot com your final sorts of interviews and in-depth analysis including a who's who in the cambridge analytical scandal all that and much more of you dr. of the state of you know still to come on the show germany's bonus league title has been sewn up barred by arena but these two teams start playing to fight for at stake for lives and leverkusen a bird the next season's champions league. ok let's get over to helen now a key speech from the chinese president amidst into new fears of
9:18 am
a trade war you some big promises in that speech but of course the question always is will actions follow words so more openness from the wall second biggest economy that was the promise from chinese president xi jinping he's been making that promise for a long time in a global stage and it's a message he also touted at the forum in asia but as the question the perennial question will china put its money where its mouth is. anticipation for chinese president xi jinping speech at the ball well forum had been building for weeks amid an exchange of punitive trade blows between the world's biggest economies she chose a conciliatory tone he pledged lower tariffs for vehicles improved access to the financial sector and stronger intellectual property rights almost all read your old war mentality in zero sum games think they are old fashioned and outdated isolationism will only create walls only by sticking to peaceful development and
9:19 am
cooperation can we truly achieve win win and multi win situation although the us was not specifically mentioned opening up the chinese domestic market and better protection for intellectual property are two of its key demands markets were cheered by shane seeming efforts to smooth over relations between the world's biggest economies and the promise of more liberalization within china but observers cautioned against preemptive celebration china has made similar commitments before but has shown little action whether the current tension with the u.s. increases the likelihood these promises will be implemented remains uncertain. well for more on this let's bring in correspondent. now in beijing mathias tell us more about what she had to say at this very critical moment for trade relations. while the has been a lot of expectations with regard to this speech she has been expected to make
9:20 am
major announcements of further opening up trying to ease economy and that's what he has done he has announced opening up chinese economy lowering tariffs for imports and even allowing more direct investments that means investments without having to pair with a chinese company in a joint venture specially in the car industry so these are major announcements one can say it is what has been expected promises a plenty saying that he's not seeking a trade surplus in favor of mutual benefits as you say that mathias an open global economy the question is of course all people taking him at his word on this. the problem is that he has made similar announcement although less specific before his prime minister has made these that announcements year on year. these are still
9:21 am
announcements we will have to see what comes out he has a history off announcing a more open policy when he started his term in two thousand and thirteen he has announced major major liberalizations off the chinese economy domestic and domestically and internationally known nothing of this has happened the state has even further enhanced and is grip on the economy so this would be a major turn in his policies and people are skeptical whether this will really happen some minor adjustments might happen. as a concession in this trade war that donald trump has been calling absolutely as you point out critics say that she has actually in fact been closing the economy see you international investors and china has also said that it is evaluating the potential impact of losing its currency as a tool in trade negotiations in the spat with the united states what can you tell
9:22 am
us about that. i think we can see this as a way off were warfare donald trump has been obsessed with this currency issue although a lot of experts have said that this is not anymore an issue as it was five or ten years ago so i think this is a direct response to donald trump china is also now laying its weapons on the table to show what it would be capable off i am not sure that it would be in their interest even to change their core currency policies at this moment all right so beijing laying out its. at least correspondent in beijing thank you. well she's day has so far gone off for a slow start for many in germany with warning strikes among public sector workers including airport employees striking security grounds tof mean you are as planes have failed to take off for equities are affected frankfurt munich the cologne born
