says it could be set to replace chief executive mathias middle of the board is scheduled to meet friday reports are already mounting that success will be head of the b.w. brand have at these militias only been in the job for a few years and though the company has paid billions in compensation over the diesel gate scandal it's actually selling more cars than ever. so why why is all this happening stephen beardsley my colleague is here to maybe shed some light on this one what's going on what's gone on over v.w. that we don't know about it's a fascinating question because this is caught everyone by surprise there's been no big scandals that have really popped off recently there's been rumors of this and there's been nothing else to suggest that there was going to be a sudden change the top now of course there's always internal boardroom politics that we may not know about but let's also look at the big picture here miller was brought in to folks wagon to to lead it to more than two years ago when he was still a porsche where he was actually quite happy according to all reports he was brought

in to lead the world's biggest carmaker at a time of its biggest scandal and so imagine how difficult a job this must have been for him for the past two years of course he's had to watch as colleagues have been arrested prosecuted as has paid out billions of dollars in settlements twenty billion dollars more than twenty billion dollars in the us none in europe we should point out. and as diesel itself has become a synonym for dirty not clean so he's presided over all of this in a sense he's meant to he's been meant to leave the brand sort of back into the good graces of consumers and it's a lot perhaps for one man to do and perhaps a lot for one company to expect of one person keep in mind he also had to lead an environmental revolution or at least have an environmental scrubbing for v.w. electrification of its vehicles and also expand its brand in china so when you look at that as well it's again a huge list of tasks for the. man and he has done

a lot of the dirty work but alice want to see the company culture change is his said to be replacement did is going to be able to do that i mean he's an insiders in it right and that's an interesting point too because there was sort of speculation at one point that perhaps they would bring in some of the outside this was i think about a year ago but if you look at d.c. he does his reputation as a numbers man someone who's very interesting the bottom line unions might be a little concerned about him coming in but otherwise he's not that different really from mueller they're both about the same age they both have a long history in the auto industry and distant even come in that far before the diesel scandal hit so it's really not even cleaner then mueller was so if you're looking for someone who was perfectly detached from the scandal for books like in the time that it happened that's not even d.c. so the question is what can he really do that's going to be different or what face will he bring that is different from what you were brought steve bids a let's see if what changes are v.w. and if they get to change anything thank you very much facebook has started

questions begin can he help his company recover or at least avoid further damage. china has poured cold water on the heated tariff dispute with the us both sides have been threatening steeper import duties but the trade war could just start winding down with the chinese found to open the economy and cut tariffs this time. cars are a major sticking point in the trade conflict between the world's two biggest economies the us pays a twenty five percent tariff on cars it brings to china while china only pays two point five percent in duties on cars that exports to the u.s. that's not the complete picture the u.s. sells six times more cars in china than the other way around but appeasing washington was the thrust of chinese president xi jinping speech to an audience of international business leaders at the forum of young. she

quite a lot of trump bashing that is done in the business world clarify for me do these concessions from china mean trump strategy those those threatening tariffs and a trade war is actually working. well i think mr trump will perhaps believe they're working he will certainly trumpet these these measures as a victory for him and obviously he's he's keen to get some tangible wins with the mid-term elections in the u.s. coming up in the autumn so he's going to emphasize that he's made progress and it's been his tough stance getting tough on china which is which has enabled him to do that but i think if you look at what president xi jinping actually said it. earlier today it's not that different from his his tone back in davos of the world economic

forum last january and it's actually quite short on details so he is perhaps giving mr trump what he wants but if you look at those concessions these are things that have been talked about in the past for example the the lifting of the the cop on foreign ownership in with automotive j.b.s. in china that was mentioned last november so it's it's positive broadly speaking because i think president xi jinping is is demonstrating perhaps that perhaps he's taking the opportunity to show that he's the he's the grown up in the room and he's not just going to engage in tit for tat. trade war so he's sort of taking the upper ground but he's not actually giving that much away at this stage again it was interesting from those statements to to see that. she didn't actually mention the u.s. now tell me the chances of china eventually following through on these promises that it's promised so many times.
7:26 pm
yes i mean it's easy to be a little cynical about about this perhaps but i think we have to remember that china needs foreign direct investment china's entire economy is based around ten percent growth which has been partly insured over the last three decades of that double digit growth by foreign direct investment so it needs that to continue to bring wealth to its people and for the chinese communist party to continue to justify its position as the as the ruling power certainly needs f.b.i. i think perhaps the stakes are increasingly high now but as the market is opened up so china has opened up more strategic sectors such as automotive and financial services so i i think that we will genuinely see a lift on the investment at the end should count for automotive hopefully later this year and will continue to see certain sectors opening up other non-strategic

sectors have been open open for years chris just give me a quick yes or no because we believe the interview here is the trade war now over. i can sum it up in one word i hope so but there's a lot of skin in the game that's already got it's already taken place i will just have to wait and see but hopefully trump has what he wants like a believer their big hopeful maybe from chris toroids on that one from control risks thank you. and i stand business a few a. touch comes to a. compliment. the tremendous amount. of.
