nations attempts to raise almost two billion dollars from donor nations but falls well short of its targets what lies ahead for the war torn nation. and the rape and murder of an eight year old girl in india stirs the conscious conscience of the nation the incident once again puts the spotlight on the high incidence of rape in india and how hard it is to get justice for the victims. plus the big players in the bonus league munich announced their new coach omar player nico box will take over there in july he worked his magic on court in just two years so hopes are high that community. rappers cause controversy of germany's biggest awards for pop rock our culture editor will take us to the musical.
8:02 pm
hello i'm terry martin welcome to the program. russia says it has proof that the poison gas attack in syria last weekend was staged on orders from britain the russian defense ministry says london told the white helmets rescue group in syria to fake the gas attack in the town of duma britain has called the accusation a blatant lie inspectors from the international chemical weapons watchdog are expected in duma on saturday. it is almost a week since their cries shocked the world suffocated syrian children gasping for air among the hundreds of victims of a suspected poison gas attack allegedly carried out by their government backed by russia. now comes the explosive claim from moscow
8:03 pm
that the attack was the work of britain. and sure there is because you know she's going to give this to me it's a day the russian military authorities released more evidence that proves that great britain was involved in the organization provocative act any stone go to the stadium easiest. forces for your particular. get apartheid meeting of the united nations the faceoff continued with recriminations flying back and forth the u.s. envoy spelled it her russian counterpart and i'm in awe of the silly of how you say what you say with a straight face i really really. she told the syrian delegation that the us was considering a military response to bashar al assad all nations and all people will be harmed if we allow assad to normalize the use of chemical weapons. chemical weapons
8:04 pm
inspectors have arrived in damascus in search of answers about the looming threat of been through an end to a global conflict. hasn't stopped families flocking to the city's theme parks. and. crazy trump has lost his mind the syrian people do not get scared under the leadership of president bashar al assad. we are not afraid because when it is needed we carry our weapons and fight with ya me. syria's government has turned up the heat in bolden by a russian ally it's issued a warning that it will defend itself against any military strikes. let's bring in. from moscow his russia correspondent for britain's telegraph thanks for being with us alec moscow has said the alleged chemical weapons attack was staged
8:05 pm
on orders from london it's a bold charge what kind of proof as a presented to back that up. well they got journalists together today including myself for a big presentation in the defense ministry they said that the u.k. had put pressure on the white house with the state to fake this attack people that run to the hospital started pouring water on people and yelling about a chemical attack all of this on camera to to stage this footage that has been going around the world as far as evidence on this they said they were going to provide video evidence of this and later on they sent journalists a video of two men speaking arabic claiming to have been in the hospital that day claiming that these people in the hospital were in fact the victims suffocation from a fire and that there is nothing no indication of chemical burns of course this this evidence is not very convincing a very elaborate conspiracy theory to explain the appearance of this footage and
8:06 pm
really it seems like russia muddying the waters again and trying to divert blame on to the west the russian foreign minister sergey lavrov said today that the attack was faked as part of a campaign of western russophobia do russians believe that. unfortunately a lot of russians do believe that i think yes remember that state television is still the main source of information about world events for russians youtube and of course the airwaves there are full of these claims not just a militia syria but in relation to the poisoning of the script halls and. very england also in relation to the us sanctions and of course the defense minister's clients did a lot of roles claims today that the chemical attack in duma was all just a lever
8:07 pm
a provocation by the u.k. those were picked up immediately by state channels and i was i've been seen on television that has been replayed several times so this is what the kind of information that many russians are getting now all this is happening in a very very tense atmosphere u.s. president all trump giving mixed signals about whether he's going to order a military strike on syria the russian foreign minister warned the west today against doing that how might russia respond to any u.s. led military action. well the russian defense ministry has been keeping silent on any sort of preparations that might be taking in anticipation of strikes and any measures that it might carry out in response we have a lot of politicians in moscow calling for russia to shoot down the american missiles russia does have. a surface to air missiles in syria that could potentially bring down american cruise missiles but it is doubtful that they could
8:08 pm
bring down all of those missiles if we were to see another mass right like happened last year when fifty nine christmases were launched from a u.s. ship there's even been talk that russia could target the british air force base that's located on cyprus. just across the water from syria all this is talk at this point. anything any retaliation like that could quickly escalate into the first violent conflict between these two nuclear powers since the cold war and luckily we know that the the conflict in line between russia and between between russian and american military is still being used according to the authorities on both sides and hopefully they continue to cakes and avoid any escalation. thank you very much that was a loon there that russia correspondent for britain's telegraph talking to us from moscow. well here in germany
8:09 pm
a chance of an american has said her government will support a western response to the alleged poison gas attack but will not get involved itself middle of terrell the poor the left party many of whose members are former communists that's not enough they want no german government involvement whatsoever . germany's left party called on the public to join its peace march through berlin the party is worried that the conflict in syria will only escalate in the event of a military strike. through or we as a parliamentary party have proposed the bundestag to bait for the coming week to make it totally clear that germany will not take part in a military offensive. i believe our task is to ensure peace and mediation and not to further exacerbate the situation. but at. the left party may welcome the chancellor's refusal to participate in a military strike but it also wants to prevent germany offering other support the
8:10 pm
chancellor would not have gained parliamentary approval for military participation anyway the coalition partners the social democrats would not have gone alone and without parliament's consent no marching orders. but merkel agrees with the social democrat foreign minister that russia has played a decisive role in the escalation of the conflict. it cannot stay this way it cannot keep going on like this and that's why we are maintaining the political pressure on russia and we would like to increase it to persuade russia to act differently is one condition for solving mysterious conflict it's. just. there has yet to be any criticism of trump it is important to germans that the western alliance act with unity. almost eighty percent of germans don't want the bundeswehr to participate in any military action against syria meanwhile the government is attempting
8:11 pm
a balancing act chancellor merkel has said germany stands ready to support its allies at the same time she's ruled out any military involvement. now let's catch up on some of the stories making headlines today medical sources in gaza say is really troops have shot and killed at least one person during a large protest on the border with israel many more were injured it's the third consecutive product of large scale protests against the blockade of gaza clashes with israeli forces have claimed dozens of palestinian lives. and u.s. president on trump has lashed out at james komi after the former f.b.i. director launched a new book the memoir compares the president to a mafia boss who demands loyalty and twists facts to serve his purpose and characteristically blunt tweet lambasted comey as an untruthful slimeball.
8:12 pm
now the united nations has held a conference of donors to raise funds to alleviate suffering in the democratic republic of congo and says the situation there has reached a breaking point violence is spiraling out of control and those fleeing the fighting need food and shelter by the end of the conference today only five hundred thirty million dollars had been pledged which is just about a third of the one point seven billion that the u.n. says it needs but congo's government says reports of a humanitarian crisis are exaggerated well aid agencies and congo's government are disputing just how many people have fled to safer areas of congo the government says only two hundred thirty thousand have been displaced while the u.n. says four point five million are on the move. well joe say keela who is the country's acting prime minister told french radio ahead of the meeting today that this conference is being helpful a wing lies made by certain humanitarian organizations who are poisoning national
8:13 pm
and international opinion the congo government has boycotted the aid donors conference. our correspondent has been to the democratic republic of congo to assess the situation he sent us this report. that is divided between two countries those crossing here aflame violence and war on the congolese signs hoping for a refuge a neighbor in need and congo is awash with militias and attacks on ethnic groups a tragically common. people were killed with machetes people are suffering so much so many are hiding in the bush. the situation is dire around seven point seven million people are at risk of starvation congo is rich in natural resources but civil war corruption and mismanagement have reduced it to one of the poorest countries in the world observe it suspect the government of fuelling the conflicts in order to prevent elections president kabila has refused to relinquish power
8:14 pm
since two thousand and sixteen. at the zoo fish left it in everything has gotten so bad in the last one to two years there are so many more people affected by war having to flee rape and hunger that the situation is really dramatic to have given a lot it is un organizations in geneva helping to raise around one point four billion dollars in aid money to alleviate at least some of the misery the congolese government boycotted the donor conference saying it was bad for the country's image but without a solution to the crisis most here have no choice but to flee. for more now let's bring in. mark out she works for the agency care international and she's the team leader for the emergency response at the chunk wallie refugee settlement in western uganda thanks so much for talking with us you're on the ground there how do you feel about the outcome of today's donor's conference in geneva.
8:15 pm
good evening i mean i think that one consider that the current state of the funding for the r.c. response is that five percent that this conference of the president the s.s. and the right direction however. dematerialised just not this is definitely not enough to need all of almost thirty million people who needs you might say enough distance to survive now you provide assistance to refugees arriving in uganda from the democratic republic of congo tell us exactly what they are coping with what do they tell you well since the beginning of the year uganda has received seventy thousand refugees from cargo this is actually ten thousand small because you have less to receive throughout the. whole two thousand
8:16 pm
and eighteen so we're really really stretched for months here and people are telling how horrendous stories. these are stories of horror of conflict of of violence and people here on the ground need shelter any tools they need food that they need access to health services and care and other humanitarian agencies working in uganda which working. around the r.c. and science. i'm trying to build a bat around the the aid that's operating off people however we are all struggling with the lack of funding you know the donor conference has raised five hundred thirty million dollars all that money be enough to make a difference. well definitely as i mentioned it's
8:17 pm
a step in the right direction however we need still we need to consider the crisis and you are seen. as a huge one and there are far too many. make important changed america. be contributing and we need to do all we need to fundraising and asking for that for the money that's new no so out dress needs on the ground and also needs in d.c. and this surrounding countries because as i mentioned people from india are seeing are also fleeing to. rwanda who won't be and other countries in the region and these countries also are in need of finance yes there are all financial support. it was a thank you so much for talking with us i was a mugger's a market there with care international she's helping refugees coming into uganda from the democratic republic of congo thank you. you're watching d.w.
8:18 pm
news still to come by and music have announced their next coach or by and player nico kobayashi as agreed to leave on top five for and take over in july. now hubby is here with the business news and donald trump won't be happy with the latest trade figures have him that's right it's bad news for the president china's trade surplus those are the figures they're watching with the united states keeps growing it surged almost twenty percent in the first quarter of the year compared to the same period last year now ironically new terrorists imposed by the u.s. on chinese products may have increased the trade deficit as exporters are rushing to deliver the goods before a possible trade war unfolds despite reporting slightly weaker exports in march the chinese economy is still believed to be in solid shape. and neil while the world is wondering does donald trump like multilateral trade agreements or not
8:19 pm
first he pulled the u.s. out of the transpacific partnership then he threatened to pull out of the north american free trade agreement then he started we negotiating nafta and now he might rejoin t.p. pete u.s. senators have revealed that trump has assigned economic advisors to quote take another look at a possible re-entry and here's the catch he'll only rejoin if so-called substantially better deal is offered than to his predecessor barack obama that's what he said of course on twitter the japanese finance minister at least humbly welcome to re entry if trump recognizes the significance of the pact. now amid the rising trade tensions between china and the us nobody knows which products will be hit in the end and when chinese trade farmers and farmers are preparing for possible tariffs on soybeans coming from the us china is the largest buyer but knows the business inside out. soybeans the latest casualty of
8:20 pm
proposed tariffs between china and the u.s. but chinese farmers at this shanghai trade exhibition remain on consent for them a chinese tax on u.s. soil and poets is the business opportunity they've been waiting for the government here for you know. when i first started out a hay long she and province had a large share of china's so even markets here then american soybeans came like the wolf american soybeans were a big assault on the chinese market like a water bottle of a whole lot better only that i will not go to india. it's a stop contrast to the mood among farmers in the u.s. but china accounts for sixty percent of soy exports and the terrorists could cost them up to seventy percent of that chinese exports call you in the can and large chunks of future business and study we can sell more soybeans and in these other older more mature markets but it's not going to make up for the fact that we're
8:21 pm
being cut out of the fastest growing market in the world if the tariffs are not said it's likely china's consumers will still face some feasted food prices due to the use of american soil in cooking oil and animal feed but the nation is already looking for alternative soil sources in countries such as brazil canada and russia . speaking of the latter those who are concerned with privacy on messaging platforms love the independent messaging app telegraph it offers full encryption for messages and even a timer to delete them automatically after a given period of time well the russian government doesn't like that it has won a long running dispute with telegram so a court in moscow has now ordered the blocking of the app until the company hands over the keys to its encryption system the ruling is unprecedented representing the first time a widespread messaging service has been banned in russia. voice calls instant
8:22 pm
messages and so-called secret chats all possible long telegram an app which after only five years in business already claims two hundred million monthly users in russia the middle east and the rest of the world russia's communications regulator says telegram is also used by terrorists to plan attacks but telegram refuses to cooperate with russian secret service which wants free access to encrypted messages . telegram testified that this is technically impossible and privacy groups say even if it was it will put millions of users at risk of privacy invasion graham said the short trial in moscow was politically motivated and that it would not back down. so some users are rethinking their ideas about privacy. not so much that i'm not i don't know on the one hand maybe it's the right decision to have control terrorists shut in these messengers drugs are being sold so i think it might be
8:23 pm
right on the one hand to. still others see telegram campaigning in their best interests you might get. i support telegram for not giving away our personal data to the authorities. i'd be against seeing it banned and. it's now one clear what will happen next but telegram appears to have exhausted its legal options last month russia supreme court threw out the companies that peel. football in the champions league semifinals draw has taken place to talk us through it all as kress harrington from our sports desk a cress so liverpool going to face roma by munich are going to face defending champions real madrid how how do you see all this playing out well let me make this to stay where to start terry any team in the final four is an elite team and could arguably win the champions league but the first tell you mention liverpool is roma
8:24 pm
liverpool is on fire they knocked out manchester city to get to the semifinal you're going cliff and company look very good behind their striker mahomet's a lot and the woeful really want to talk about by munich in riyadh madrid now we have a jury has the upper hand against byron munich in this particular tie but the last time by munich succeeded they had their old coach high kiss on the sidelines but unfortunately the most recent affair between the two teams crescendo when naldo was just a superstar unbelievable five goals in a six three aggregate result so let's see if biron munich can change you know that fate this time around stay with my meaning for a minute the club has announced a new coach coming in frankfurt. snick coba will take over on july first i understand what can you tell us about well it's clear what munich is the message they're sending out no more big names no more pep guardiola carlo at a lot see they're going with a player familiar with me aside mia nico cochin we have this report that will tell
8:25 pm
you more about media sun media buyer kept their promise and announced their future coach this month and it's a face familiar to munich enter. during his stint at frankfurt started in two thousand and sixteen mid season he turned the club from a relegation candidate to being on europe's doorstep this season making the announcement with five games left and frankfurt still chasing a european berth could hurt his current club moving forward however coaching in bahrain is irresistible. but we. have had a good two years here and that's coming to an end soon it'll be a difficult time for me of course but it's the case that where one door closes another door opens somewhere else. to be honest not many coaches are offered the opportunity to get
8:26 pm
a position in munich. you hike you said he thought byron made a good decision making his successor stating he's diligent and has innovative qualities not all coaches possess. special qualities maybe chris what do you think about your good fit for the reigning champions by yeah i mean it's really fits the mold only one is pretty much put out as the gold is the next coach someone who speaks german someone who is more of a homegrown person who's familiar with the mentality of munich and their sporting director is a former teammate of nico kovacs they played together meyer back in the early two thousand and so when you factor all of those ingredients together it does make sense especially given the fact that the they had failed experiments with big names in the past so you know all steam ahead for nico bats and his brother and we're hearing that not everyone is really happy with the way this announcement was
8:27 pm
handled was behind the well i think time mean i'm a person that was dissatisfied with the timing of it because you know what does the team have to gain making the announcement now frankfurt currently they have five matches left and their own europe's doorstep if they fail to perform well has show good form that they do they miss out on europe and i do still understand why frankfurt you know and their sporting director pretty much echoed that sentiment he thought the timing was horrible and as potentially demotivating it could hurt frankfurt's attempt to return to europe as we all know by munich have already won the title so they have nothing to play for domestically so i don't like the timing and time will tell how frankfurt responds on the pitch chris harrington from did obvious sports thinks ok. you are watching the news still to come protests in india as a brutal child rape and murder stir the conscience of the nation but many fear politics is getting in the way of justice we'll find out more. and the glittering

and the united nations attempts to raise almost two billion dollars for the war torn democratic republic of congo the attempt has fallen well short of its target. boycotted the conference of mayors. in india the gang rape and murder of an eight year old girl has led to fresh protests in the capital delhi the opposition congress party held a midnight vigil demanding justice for the girl eight men including two police officers have been arrested over the attack. was kidnapped in january then drugged and repeatedly raped over the course of five days before being strangled police and neighbors reportedly did nothing she belong to a nomadic muslim community in kashmir in the country's north some reports suggest the attack was an attempt to force local muslims into leaving the area. local right wing hindu groups have turned the case into
8:32 pm
a sectarian issue because the girl was muslim and all the accused are hindu the incident has again put the spotlight on the high incidence of rape in india and the lack of adequate action to punish perpetrators. protesters on the streets of the capital daily on thursday. hundreds of people gathered to denounce the killing and protest the lack of action by the authorities. i don't know what kind of mind and what kind of country we are. i can't explain what i'm feeling because i am angry but they don't want to explain the feelings. that is an attempt to use politics and use. to protect those who have committed such crimes and of course that is infuriating and what i feel now is that there is an attempt what makes me angry now is that there's an attempt. after local members of indians governing.

8:34 pm
really just try to bring attention to a c. first case and you can see some of those celebrities here they're posting pictures of themselves like these and they're saying i am hindustan i am ashamed and they include actresses like. and they're also using the hashtag justice or a c for many of these celebrities have millions of followers online so this campaign has a really big reach and there also are just other celebrities that are simply speaking out with their own voices to to really just talk about how outraged they feel one of them is a very famous actor a actress priyanka chopra and she asks hear how many more children will have to suffer unimaginable crimes before we wake up i'm disgusted it's time for swift action we owe it to us and to humanity skeptics of course they can ask a dozen online campaign really achieve anything what can hashtags and tweets what can they do while there's an indian writer producer his name is nickel and ten asia
8:35 pm
he provides some thoughts on that i think that he makes a really good point here on twitter and here's what he says he says look a critical mass of people are coming together for one cause which creates noise which creates pressure which can lead to action which can hopefully lead to justice you know as we saw those the also those massive protests in the streets so clearly not just online but it's a case that is really disturbed so many people in india that they just feel they have to do something even if it's just going on to twitter and speaking out speaking. from a social media does thank you so much. it's been nearly ten years since the government of zimbabwe sent in soldiers to take control of diamond fields in the east of the country and put in an illegal mining of their human rights groups say the army offensive in the more runge diamond field led to the killing of hundreds of people have been constant reports since the army took control continuing torture forced labor and other human rights abuses. in the diamond fields have also been
8:36 pm
out of bounds to the foreign media team from the german broadcaster a.r.d. has now been to the area this is their report. times are a status symbol the epitome of glamour but we uncovered a very different stark reality torture and poverty in the very place with a glittering diamonds are dug out of the ground. security guards tied me up and sat me on the ground then their dogs mauled my leg. we travel to the fields in zimbabwe one of the largest diamond deposits in the world for years the field served as a power base for the country's rulers for decades that was dictator robert mugabe but in november the military rose up against him forcing him from power.
8:37 pm
the new president emerson mancow has promised to bring change. what is happening in matter and he is going to huge. change. the entire meaning fichter is that likely to continue in this speech. which doesn't been if would be complete and we. for years these fields have been hermetically sealed off completely off limits to film crews we want. to see what's happened here since the change of power we send off all necessary letters before hand and receive some positive responses but when we get there or sent on a wild goose chase from one public authority to another and the end we failed to get permission was the trip all for nothing some representatives from the local moran gay people after which the diamond fields are named take us close to the
8:38 pm
forbidden zone. there we meet the leader of iran day we receive a traditional greeting. not bad we know we're living on huge diamond deposits but we haven't gotten anything from it nothing the money always disappears. the chief's son and another leader show us the living conditions in direct proximity to the diamond deposits the diamond mining companies and the government are actually obliged to give nearby local communities a share of the proceeds but the locals assure us the money appears to have trickled away apparently right up to robert mugabe. living here in abject poverty crumbling we barely have enough to eat despite being
8:39 pm
surrounded by diamonds we haven't benefited from it's safe ah to be honest i'm not perfect to move away from the diamond fields if i could. the leaders of them are young gay are pinning their hopes on the new government they have applied for their own mining license in order to profit finally from the diamond business they say it would benefit their communities. only a few kilometers away lies the four habited zone we want to know what it's like inside. so. we get a tip hidden road takes us into the restricted zone where there's hardly any security that's how we manage to get deep into the so-called red zone but beyond this point it gets too risky directly behind it security guards are on patrol. to villagers agree to push on further and film the scene. these are exclusive images they show
8:40 pm
the environmental damage disused mines are simply abandoned and they show the impoverished residents searching for diamonds in the hope of a bit of income. we found out what they've gone through when the villagers returned from filming they brought with them several of the prospectors. that's where by the water but last night we were caught by the security guards and we had to sit down tied up and then they set their dogs on us after they'd been us we had to pull them off our legs ourselves my dogs bit my testicles they bit one off and this was what they thought was that we was going to come. closer and. when said the fields. it was going to death it was there's no why there's no fence we skinned say it once and he said so what did he does he said that we were told my brother and they ask me my idea why they have acted by the time they let me down
8:41 pm
they take their dogs and then if you don't know my name on my side the bet may be up to that and. it's. for i'm a google and his human rights organization have been documenting torture cases like this for years he himself was arrested for speaking to victims in the diamond fields we have good pictorial if you didn't see people we have been viciously mouthed by dogs in the dogs are now very much used to to sucking human blood you know and the did the stories that we are told are horrible and some of them my succumbing to the injuries some of them i purchased to death by the roots they disagree to god so it's been a systematic and it's ongoing. security forces torturing villagers and those seeking diamonds for the black market. what does the cabinet minister responsible
8:42 pm
for the region have to say about these allegations. she played a significant role in the fall of robert mugabe and she's now trying to attract international investors to zimbabwe including its time in industry. as it was the. wisdom or stuff definitely we can do with everyone this is a good defense forces everyone the police to make sure that that was to. zimbabwe's forbidden diamond fields a testing ground for whether or not the country's new government can keep its promises. how it is back with more business news on a milestone in volkswagens corporate history and least that's what they want to do terry that's what they want to achieve the shake up at fox and what a week has been ended with a press conference announcing the biggest restructuring in the company's history new positions new management new divisions but critics say little is going to
8:43 pm
change and how far does business as old power structures are still in place that doesn't seem to bother new c.e.o. how about d.s. here are some of his points. the w.'s new c.e.o. hebert d.c. is wasting no time in his bid to make the famously unwieldy company lighter on its feet. on the deal is this influx into our aim to make volkswagen a front runner of the auto industry when it comes to economic and innovative strength and sustainability. so. the idea behind this is our conviction that a more efficient company should be steering strong brands have a decent joined volkswagen three years ago he's been a success as head of it's important to be w. brand so he's off to a good start among staff members their focus is highly focused and also has an eye on the future developments. but i am an employee here at volkswagen.
8:44 pm
i've witnessed him at various events. and i can say that he's performed really well since he came here for taller. absorb year and this is only the beginning for hebat d.c. he's planning a major overhaul of the company which includes a stronger focus on the automakers business in china and then there's the question of efficiency how best to run such a huge company with so many different brands desist aleutian organizing them in groups which he hopes will inject some dynamism into the car maker the plan looks like this the company's mass market brands will form one group in it the core brands v.w. skoda c at then there's the premium segment featuring audi the super premium with the company's four luxury brands and truck and bus which says v.w. is being prepared to go public. and what about electric cars many observers say
8:45 pm
v.w. is coming too late to alternative drive trains but that too is something habit d.c. seems driven to change now as you may know by now folks buying is based in the german city of zork which was pretty much built around the company if you will so what does the shakeup mean for thousands of workers living there our reporter went to work to find out you can read all about it and find more coverage on the v.w. story at our website at v.w. dot com slash business. and if you don't want to sit around the computer today is flex friday a popular hash tag used by fist fitness enthusiasts who show off their muscles for the weekend they don't only take selfies but buy protein shakes gym subscriptions and all kinds of apparel it's a twenty six billion euro industry in europe alone and it's set to grow there are even trade fairs to keep up with the latest trends we send one of our reporters to
