t.w. is a new multimedia series from. d.w. dot com africa on the move. you're watching the w. news live from berlin after airstrikes the u.s. threatens to further action against syria's leadership i spoke to the president this morning and he said if the syrian regime uses this poisonous gas again the united states is locked and loaded us ambassador nikki haley with

a clear message to the united nations that's as the security council rejects a russian resolution to condemn the western missile attack on alleged chemical weapon facilities in syria also coming up. india in shock after another child is brutally raped and murdered this after days of protests demanding justice for victims of sexual crimes. and in formula one red bull's daniel ricardo who almost didn't even make it to qualifying has emerged victorious in shanghai. i have a cough and welcome to the program the u.s. and its allies have said they have no further plans for missile strikes on syria but the white house has warned the united states is locked and loaded to act again if damascus carries out more gas attacks syria's president assad has said the
6:02 pm
western air strikes or based on a campaign of lies in the u.n. security council a big there by russia his regimes main backer to condemn the strikes has failed. today's u.s. led strikes on syria it was a war of words between russia and the united states in the united nations. a sign of cynical to stay in a group of western countries decided to take military action without waiting for the results of the investigation russia condemns in the strongest possible terms of attack against syria through its actions united states makes an already catastrophic humanitarian situation in syria even worse i spoke to the president this morning and he said if the syrian regime uses this poisonous gas again the united states is a lot and loaded. when our president draws
6:03 pm
a red line our president and forces the red line. but the bickering isn't just about whether the strikes were just to find the u.s. france and the u.k. maintain that they bombed only chemical weapons facilities yet russia says the missiles targeted several fields as well and they say syrian defenses destroyed seventy one of the one hundred missiles fired that's a claim the pentagon disputes and i want to say that to the best of our ability to determine at this time no syrian weapon had any effect on anything that we did the pentagon showed off satellite images of the destruction saying the strikes completely destroyed two targets and seriously damaged in about one in damascus was reduced to rubble but there's still no independent confirmation of what the scientists were actually used for the faceoff five syria continues. story i'm joined by international security analyst marcus marcus the major fear prior to
6:04 pm
these airstrikes what was that this would put the u.s. and russia in direct confrontation is there still fear of that not really both sides have pursued a policy of confrontation in syria for the last couple of yes i mean both sides will for the off. sighing in syria or in the skies over syria and have carefully avoided any direct contact and for cooperated in determining certain routes and certain flights times and last night the night before when the u.s. attack syria was again a very carefully calibrated strike to avoid any casualties among the russian soldiers and among the running soldiers as well as talk about specifically about the targets will first have a listen to what the u.s. state department had to say on that. we have a responsibility as a war old to attack and stop what syria is doing and so the united states with her allies went after three sites these are pinprick targets three targeted sites that
6:05 pm
we know were housing and testing chemical weapons. and she's talking about three specific targets what we know about these targets they're well known to the international community all to the o.p.c. viz for a couple of years now and we have to take into consideration that the u.s. president announced the this kind of strikes i mean for five days so does in case there have been satan certain chemicals they have been withdrawn and put in another place. and but just to be clear we also want to talk about the fact that what kind of evidence is there that assad specifically in these targets perhaps is housing and storing and researching chemical weapons it's difficult to assess from the outside if there's really a smoking gun i mean we all know it's. a problem of probability it's highly likely the chemical weapons have been used dozens of times over the last year and when we take into consideration the council witnesses the words as i call ins that the when
6:06 pm
they talk about and compare to the bombs being dropped from airplanes it's direct to the responsibility of the regime of the assad regime but it's not a smoking gun ok the white house says it has three main priorities they want to contain iran's influence in the region they also want to ensure that there is no more use of chemical weapons and defeat the so-called islamic state with these airstrikes they've completed with the help of friends and britain are they any closer to achieving any of these goals i think these kind of history's had nothing to do with the goals you just mentioned i mean the islamic states has already been defeated more or less in military terms so it actually we didn't need the additional strikes chemical weapons have been used after their tryst. the let's hear in april of two of twenty seventeen for dozens of times by the syrian regime so both simply repeating this kind of symbolic strikes i think. we cannot
6:07 pm
expect that chemical weapons are not be used and the third goal to contain iran is more a political goal than and all the goal which can be accomplished by political means only and not going to turn a means what would the u.s. france and britain need to do be it politically or military intervention wise to elicit some kind of change in syria because we don't think that these airstrikes have done that absolutely i mean i'm afraid the case is the last think. what can be what we can speculate about it would be a mere extended military campaign for a couple of days or even weeks to bomb the west back to the negotiating table so that the europe and the united states would put this debate in any peace agreement or peace negotiations but i think there's no major appetite in pursuing peace or implementing this kind of extended military campaign middle east analyst marcus thank you for your insights thank you. to india now where another child rape case
6:08 pm
has shocked the nation police say they've discovered the body of an eleven year old girl in the western city of so rot they believe she was abducted raped and then strangled to death this comes amid days of protests in many parts of the country over the gang rape and killing of eight year old. a muslim girl's body was discovered in a hindu dominated area earlier this year demonstrators have been demanding justice for her and other victims of sexual crimes in india. your correspondent joins us now from delhi as you were at a rally earlier where people gathered to call for this justice for this young girl what did they have to say when you spoke to them. you know what there was really a mixture of feelings there on the ground at the protest there was anger sadness helplessness in some ways because of the fact that you know these kinds of protests have been happening we had a huge one five years ago for a week two weeks at
6:09 pm
a time over brutal gang rape here in delhi and five years down the line you know people are still seeing these kinds of things happening so helplessness in that sense but there's also a sense of really wanting to take action and you know make sure that it's not just a protest that does nothing you know as we were walking into the protest i took a photo of a woman who was shot said leave our girls alone and when i took the photo she said don't just take photos let's make sure that that you know we protect our girls you know we go into homes and speak to two young boys about their roles in society and how they treat women so i think that i thought that sort of little interaction kind of showed you know that people it's both angry but also wanting to channel that anger into to doing something productive or a mix of emotions there can you tell us more about this case specific lee and the religious implications because this child was from the muslim community and all of
6:10 pm
the accused men are hindu how has religion played a role in the aftermath of the murder. well you know this is the case which i'm mentioning in the state of jammu and kashmir and as you said you know a village and has sort of played a role in all of this you know on the one hand it is at its face you know another brutal gang rape of a child but where religion comes in here as is the fact that you know this was a muslim girl from a particular nomadic muslim community in that state which has had some tension with local people from the hindu community who are not wanting this nomadic community necessarily to be in there they're part of the of the country and what's emerged with the charge sheet from the police investigation is that this was allegedly a pool. very sort of planned out thing to try and drive away this community they sort of identified this young girl she was out grazing the family's horses and they
6:11 pm
identified her as someone that they could sort of kidnap a docked drug rape as the charge sheet says and use that as a way to try and intimidate this community and on the flipside the way religion has also played a role is that you've had a lot of sort of hardline hindus actually reacting to this case not to express outrage about what happened but to express outrage in their view of of hindu men being accused of this and so you had this sort of reaction that you might not expect of people actually coming out vociferously in defense of the accused in addition to the outrage that we've already seen towards the accused d w correspondent thank you very much. absolutely other stories making news around the world hundreds of thousands have turned out in barcelona to protest the jailing of nine catalan separatist leaders on rebellion charges the march comes ten

a good harvest during monsoon season for. formula one our red bull driver daniel ricardo has won the chinese grand prix not bad for someone who almost didn't make it to qualifying after he blew his engine on saturday but his team got him a new one just in time and the australian then drove it to the head of the pack. ferrari sebastian fettle came into the race as the favorite he won pole position and had won all of the races so far this season he did indeed roar to the front here too but it would be short lived. when a collision brought the safety car on to the track it proved to be a turning point for the drivers from red bull daniel ricardo and mach's fish stop and who took the opportunity to get fresh soft tires in the pit that gave them a boost meanwhile fettle had lost the lead after a pit stop and a minor collision after that he never really got back on track. ricardo made some

daring moves to overtake and soon he captured the lead with twenty laps to go the australian took the checkered flag with an almost astronomical nine second advantage a head of second placed voluntary put us of mercedes. i don't seem to win boring races they're all pretty fun so that was unexpected you know what i'll still twenty four hours ago i thought we might be starting at the back of the grid so. just sleeping through the boys just i thank them off the call applying a bit today is the real reward but that would it's ricardo's sixth career win and his first in shanghai medal still leads the standings but ricardo springs into fourth. the final whistle has blown in the bundesliga rua derby was shall cut claiming victory over rivals dortmund for the first time since two thousand and fourteen shaka took the lead shortly after halftime but it wasn't until defender naldo hammered home the second in the eighty second minute of the
