are not the only ones defiant the pentagon showed off satellite images of the destruction saying the strikes completely destroyed two targets and seriously damaged another one and damascus was reduced to rubble. we have a responsibility as a world to attack and stop what syria is doing and so the united states with her allies one after three sites these are pinprick targets three targeted sites that we know were housing and testing chemical weapons it's these people that were affected by the poison gas attack but triggered the u.s. led strikes thousands of refugees from eastern guta live in the scum near aleppo many a disillusioned. i feel nothing because the us britain and the rest of the world have taken away our emotions they told us with the friends of the syrian

people but on the contrary they're our greatest enemies. and we know that they tell us do whatever you want to kill if you like. should back in damascus syria's deputy foreign minister greeted a team from the international chemical weapons watchdog despite western allies already having launched retire yewtree strikes inspectors will now determine whether poison gas was used in duma but they will not assign blame. we're being joined now by allister hay an expert in chemical warfare and he's been involved in the analysis of chemical weapons in iraq joining us now from leeds in the u.k. professor thank you so much for being here let's start with the question of whether there's there were any evidence that any of the sites attacked were used actually for the manufacture of storage of chemical weapons as the u.s. is claiming what we certainly know about the laboratory outside of damascus that
12:05 am
was clearly one that was testing chemical weapons and inspectors had collected evidence from this some time ago from one of the few coppers in the bar a tree so that was unequivocally tested substances the syrians refuse to acknowledge that the evidence was there now syria denies that it's behind the duma tack to spite this evidence but is there any doubt that the syrian government has used chemical weapons in the past there is no doubt whatsoever there was a mission setup by the security council in two thousand and fifteen the joint investigations mission between the o.p.c. job mean not just nations and given the specific remit of identifying the perpetrator and into their reports they say quite convincingly the evidence is unequivocal syria had used chlorine on at least three occasions and it did use no gas last year in an attack that killed one hundred people and injured another two
12:06 am
hundred now you've been involved in six different investigations into chemical weapons attacks including two in iraq and now based on your experience with these and what you know of the facts so far from syria this last time how difficult do you think it will be for inspectors from the organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons to establish what happened in duma. well it's a given inhibited access then it should be relatively easy to get the evidence the inspectors have done this sort of thing many times now and syria as long as nothing has been moved they will see victims interview victims interview treating doctors they will talk to other witnesses they will take blood samples and urine samples where they can collect evidence from the environment if you get near where an explosion has occurred different chemicals i blasted into concrete traumatic you find it on foot where they go for dead animal dead animals dead birds as well so
12:07 am
there will be plenty of evidence there it's more difficult with chlorine but they'll find the evidence it's only a week after the incident now the west is saying that it took this action because of the use of chemical weapons can you think a picture for us as to why these weapons are considered so much worse than conventional ones well there is an international treaty that outlaws these weapons of course it was the horror of the first world war where there were one and a half million casualties of chemical weapons that really started the whole ball rolling but it took until nine hundred ninety seven but the chemical weapons convention to come become international law there one hundred ninety two states that signed that convention now and basically they're saying this should be no chemical weapons used anywhere and while the three countries attacking syria i suppose are doing is saying syria is not obeying the requirements of the convention
12:08 am
despite having signed it and they object to that and they are attacking syria telling it to you know don't use chemical weapons present alistair hay in the u.k. for us thank you very much for your expertise it welcome good night. now to some of the other stories making news around the world protests have been taking place across india over the gang rape and killing of eight year old aussies have been known the muslim girl's body was discovered in a hindu dominated area earlier this year demonstrators have been demanding justice for her and other victims of sexual crimes in is in india. montenegro is governing democratic party of socialists says its leader mellowed you kind of it has won the country's presidential election the six time former prime minister spearheaded the former yugoslav republic joining nato in two thousand and seventeen and it's now crafting its entry into the european union. revellers celebrating nepal's new
