director james comey lashes out ahead of the publication of his new poll. and in the book his league is shot and squared up in germany's biggest darby it turned out to be and bawling much and we got the goal. hello i'm terry marchin good to have you with us. western leaders are set to start a new diplomatic push today to try to end the crisis in syria that comes two days after a u.s. led coalition carried out military strikes on sites in syria the u.n. security council is set to talk about a new resolution for a cease fire across the country e.u. foreign ministers are also meeting one aim is to persuade moscow to return to the negotiating table. business as usual that appears to be the message of the syrian

state t.v. images an upbeat president a sad welcomed russian politicians to damascus signaling that the u.s. led strikes did not pose a threat to his hold on power russia says it's firmly behind its ally. relations between the russian and syrian army's are excellent so relations between politicians the army will now fulfill its. russia and the assad government are not the only ones defiant the pentagon showed off satellite images of the destruction saying the strikes completely destroyed two targets and seriously damaged another one in damascus was reduced to rubble. we have a responsibility as a world to attack and stop what syria is doing and so the united states with her allies one after three sites these are pinprick targets three targeted sites that

we know were housing and testing chemical weapons these people fled. the site of the alleged chemical attack many refugees in the area are now in syria's rebel held north the feeling here is of disappointment that the airstrikes will do little to stop the war. thought i feel nothing because the us britain and the rest of the world have taken away our emotions they told us with the friends of the syrian people but on the contrary they're our greatest enemies. we know that they tell us do whatever you want kill as you like. should back in damascus syria's deputy foreign minister greeting to team from the international chemical weapons watchdog despite western allies already having launched retaliatory strikes inspectors will now determine whether poisonous gas was used. but they will not assign blame. for more on the join here in the studio by do w.

political correspondent thomas sparrow and with us in luxembourg is the w.'s dog martin let's start with you foreign ministers are meeting there today were you or was talking about syria understand what can we expect. i expect you know european foreign ministers here to formalize their support for these airstrikes conducted by two a members of the european union and the u. s. also we expect them to condemn the use of chemical weapons and what they will emphasize what they're expected to emphasize in their council conclusions here really is that the sole purpose of these strikes was to deter the regime from the future use of these chemical weapons so nother no other objective in mind and then of course today all eyes on germany and france in particular they're expected to kick off a new political initiative to resolve this conflict in the future now berlin has
9:05 am
already voiced support for the air strike in syria. over the weekend but its focus thomas is definitely on diplomacy at this point germany's foreign minister heiko must now says a window for dialogue has opened with syria's main backer russia here's what he had to say on sunday. we've always said we want to continue a dialogue with russia. but it's really time to say that we want a constructive input from the russians in syria as well instead of just protecting our sides he wasn't in my defunct type thing. germany's foreign minister there. told us does the german government think that russia will and other warring parties in syria for that matter will actually now be more inclined to come to the negotiating table and maybe come up with a political solution to the conflict certainly what the german government hopes they have said all along that this conflict in syria cannot be resolved without
9:06 am
russia and that there is therefore a need to sit down at the table with russia and try to find. solutions at the same time however in that interview also stressed that it was not only about sitting at the same table and talking that it was about demanding concrete proposals from russia so that's also part of that initiative that i mentioned that germany and france will be trying to kick start the russia obviously is a key part key player in this calling flick the french president hollande has accused russia of being complicit in the syrian government's use of chemical weapons let's listen part of what he had to say. of course that complicity. i said so when i spoke to vladimir putin they didn't use calling themselves but they have met all the clique built of the incapacity of the international community to use diplomatic means to prevent the use of chemical weapons. georg their luxembourg individual european powers are openly accusing russia of
9:07 am
involvement in chemical weapons attacks does that not complicate the use push for diplomacy. that is of course the danger area and it is an argument to be made on the other hand that is the same argue argument you could make about the about the airstrikes that they only help to escalate the crisis and not lead to a deescalation off the crisis and that is really the point that that my call is trying and the key part of that strategy is to bring russia as thomas pointed out correctly here to the negotiating table to make them part of a new initiative and that is for instance also why the french president also made clear that the b. he believes he has convinced donald trump to stay over the long term militarily involved speaking a language potentially that flooded me putin will understand sometimes we sometimes hear mixed messages coming from the russian government from or from the german
9:08 am
government i should say individual members of the german government about how to deal with russia russia being a key player as we said already in this conflict in syria is germany playing a special role here in keeping diplomatic channels with russia open in a certain way yes and that also has to do with the fact that the two leaders of germany down the russian need to know each other very well they worked for many many years together although there are clear differences between germany and russia but germany certainly believes that it can play an important role when it comes to finding those diplomatic channels again germany's position on all this was they supported the airstrikes but they clearly said they would not take part in any military action and on the other hand they were trying to focus on finding political solutions that doesn't go to a german government that's the only way this crisis can be resolved thomas thank you so much to tell us barrow here in the studio with us and in luxembourg. to sue we usually have in brussels but is now with the e.u.

. billie's has yet to fix a day. three former f.b.i. director james comey has said u.s. president all trump is quote morally unfit for the office of the president it's the latest chapter in the bitter feud between the two men let's quickly recap the key events in march last year koni confirmed that the f.b.i. was investigating russian links to the trump campaign but he informed trump that he was not personally under investigation well just weeks later in may trump fired komi raising many questions about the timing the president has been inconsistent in his reasons for firing the f.b.i. director then in june comey testified at a senate intelligence committee hearing accusing trump of lying defaming the f.b.i. and trying to derail an investigation. firing triggered robert. as special

investigation into possible collusion between russia and trump selection campaign so far has indicted several of the president's campaign staffers well will also help justice officials launch a fraud inquiry into the president's closest his associate that's his personal lawyer michael cohen now komi is releasing a book and ahead of it he's given his first interview since his firing here's why he told us network a.b.c. that trump is unsuitable for the office of president but i don't buy the stuff about him being mentally incompetent or early stages of dementia strikes me as a person of above average intelligence who's tracking conversations and knows what's going on i don't think he's medically unfit to be president i think is morally unfit to be president who talks about and treats women like they're pieces of meat who lies constantly about matters big and small and insists the american

people believe that person is not fit to be president the united states on moral grounds. former f.b.i. director james comey there will joining us now is us political analyst tyson barker from the aspen institute here in berlin good morning tyson morning what do you make of coney's latest statements about the president well clearly there is no love lost between the two men i mean the interview that he gave yesterday and a.b.c. was dripping with personal distain that i mean and he did bring what he's known for this kind of boy scout persona to that interview saying that he is morally unfit to be president that said he did say that the decision to remove from from office should not be made by any process or technical vote or even even by impeachment up to this point so there's no evidence but rather by the voters themselves that's the democratic process in the democratic process should be allowed to work itself out. donald trump present all tropi procedure this interview with a tweet storm classic style against komi let's take
9:13 am
a look at one of the more recent tweets he wrote slippery james komi a man who always ends up badly and out of what he is not smart will go down as the worst f.b.i. director in history by far. tyson who will american voters trust in all of those who are they going to be more inclined inclined to believe trump are coming what do you think the polls show and there was a poll taken last week by politico show that americans trust komi two to one forty eight percent to thirty two percent but that thirty two percent is really important because that's the hard trump base the kind of always trump or as they don't really leave the president they don't defect from the president no matter what happens and the question is is the support for comi and the most investigation as determined as those that thirty two percent that's really sticking with trump and white house reporters are saying that they've never seen trump as angry as he is right now just ahead of the book's release the book to be released tomorrow by comey what is it
9:14 am
about all this that angers trump the east well i think that. he's directed most of his iyer over the past year with this russian investigation and his attorney general and deputy attorney general he really sees the spark that started this fire as being the decision by jeff sessions to recuse himself from the investigation thereby starting a chain of events that led to this miller investigation the raid at the f.b.i. the f.b.i. raid of his personal lawyer last week mr cohen has also sparked a lot of nervousness in the white house and particularly for the president himself he is asking to know what evidence was gathered in those raids of course the implication is they want to prepare themselves for whatever might be coming down the pipeline so you've got a president becoming increasingly nervous and agitated i suppose you could say let's listen to what komi himself had to say when asked if the russians had any
9:15 am
compromising information on donald trump. i mean these are more words i never thought i utter about a president's things but it's possible and i wish i wasn't saying it but it's just it's the truth it always struck me and still strikes me as unlikely and i would have been able to say with high confidence about any other president i'd go with but i can't it's possible. former f.b.i. director casting doubt on trump suggesting that the russians might have some incriminating. evidence what do you make of that how significant is this statement it's very significant the other question that he came up in this interview was you know the george stephanopoulos asked several times for him to render judgment on a number of issues what is your what's your take and he really tried to stay within a certain box because he knows that he is a witness he's not just you know a former f.b.i. director but a witness in a live investigation and he doesn't want to do anything that will affect his credibility as a witness in the miller investigation itself we've seen many developments so far
9:16 am
during trump's brief presidency all moving towards an old white house increasingly in disarray and being on the back foot as it were in turmoil how significant is this development now what is happening with coneys book how much is this adding to the fire well they've clearly coming it's clearly set up a p.r. kind of campaign that's going to keep this in the news cycle for a week he's got a number of interviews coming out he's going to do a book tour they've commissioned i think nine hundred thousand books that's about four hundred five hundred thousand books more than the fire and fury book that came out a couple of months ago but the truth is that the news keeps layering over itself so this is one episode in a long narrative that's been going on since this presidency began but it's certainly not the last episode. i'm sure we'll have much more to talk about as things continue tyson barr from the aspen institute here in berlin thanks so much.

in turkey the currency is in a tailspin has more thank you very much terry. well the data seems paradoxical turkey's economy seems to be ticking along nicely it grew by more than seven percent last year stronger and china's but some economic indicators seem to contradict that turkish currency for example the lira has been on a continuous downward spiral so what's going on. turkey is cheaper than ever for foreign tourists the turkish lira continues to hit new lows against major currencies. it's lost nearly half its value against the euro for example since twenty fifteen. but although that might be great for foreign visitors it's a huge problem for the country because it has to import commodities like oil and

gas the country's central bank could apply the brakes by raising interest rates but president wretched tired out of want has hamstrung that idea he's betting on a looser monetary policy that wants to retain low interest rates to help drive economic growth and he accuses those who aren't of the same opinion of being tools of western powers that are want to tributes the fall of the leader to turkey's enemies. he claims that they are playing games with our economy and i say to all those who attack our economy that you will not succeed you fail before and will feel like again. turkish companies are suffering the country's largest manufacturer of food products isn't debt to the tune of billions in hard currencies but in its home market sales are in default langley iraq has already warned that it will soon be unable to meet its obligations all told turkish

companies oh creditors around three hundred billion dollars some economists now believe turkey could be the flashpoint that sets off a new financial crisis. well that surely is a lot of money and how dangerous is this situation both for and for the rest of the world economy let's bring in professor. he's with the university of applied sciences in constance would you agree with that we both can talk is economy trigger another economic crisis in your view to the huge debts that response in the companies have accumulated. i would be not so pessimistic and i it's true that in particular countries like spain and italy provided to credit for this huge consumption driven growth in turkey but at the same time be hot this risk test of the european central bank i would go so far and say turkey's collapse financial collapse would trigger problems in the european union but it would be not

a large scale crisis as we have to sort of for example in two thousand and eight two thousand and nine. mr advani says that foreign powers are hard at work to do rail the turkish currency in one's low interest rates does he have a point. i mean of politicians tend to have a different view on this issue the fact is that the turkish lira is on the pressure because there is a mounting imbalance in qif indicating figures we have on the one hand is strong domestic growth in turkey but at the same time inflation is a double digit and the central bank does not intervene so what we see is that the capital markets actually take the road which the central bank should take and namely prohibiting an overheating of a domestic growth which seems to be not provided by a growth in output. the growth figures seven percent instead believable is the turkish government being creative with. publishing their figures. i mean
9:21 am
this is a difficult question and to be fair in our assessment it's like turkey is going through a difficult situation on the one hand the country strong tried to stimulate growth by massive public spending and of course this had a positive effect on on on turkey's growth rate but on the other hand there is this massive intervention political intervention that the central bank should not increase interest and so forth you said it and the good news is that the system the economic system works capital markets why have the exchange rate basically counterbalancing a potential overheating in turkey so i don't see a kind of negative evil capital market actors acting against turkey in the contrary capital markets try to prohibit an overheating a purely consumption based growth in turkey. from constance university of
