to just be given for the war to see you how old turbot it is. as a junior to need to go through the green streets i'm not jewish. a young man tells d.w. that he and his friends were beaten up for wearing that kick butt in berlin and they weren't even jewish and french president emmanuel mccall is in berlin with some ideas for big changes to the european union among them a european monetary fund to help bellow member states in trouble but will germany be on board. welcome to the program thanks for joining us. israel is celebrating seventy years since its founding according to the hebrew calendar that anniversary began at sundown on wednesday to honor the moments that the founding father david ben-gurion

announced the state of israel into existence the following year saw the jewish state at bitter all odds with its arab neighbors a prime minister benjamin netanyahu told crowds in jerusalem that real seeds of peace were beginning to sprout in the region. in a blaze of fire the menorah the symbol of the state of israel comes to life. with a colorful ceremony the country marked its independence day. seventy years since the jewish state was founded in the middle east israelis celebrated the country's economic and cultural accomplishments. the event also marked israel's memorial day a fleet of drones in the night sky formed the star of david over jerusalem to honor those who died for the country. prime minister benjamin netanyahu that an

honorary torch to remember those killed in his speech he issued a warning to the world that israel would defend itself against any would be aggressors. today we are not deterred from the struggle against those who strive to annihilate us because we know how to defend ourselves with our own forces which is the essence of independence we are as determined as ever we are as strong as ever. just weeks ago saudi arabia signaled a something of its bully anti israel stance netanyahu also emphasizes israel's hand is quote outstretched in peace to all our neighbors who wants peace. let's get more now i'm joined from jerusalem by the israeli historian and
12:04 pm
journalist tom said he is a member of a group of israeli academics known as the new historians a group that challenges many of the nation's traditional narratives welcome to you and thank you so much for joining us i like to first begin by asking you because for the seventieth anniversary of israel's founding you actually just completed a biography of the states founder it's called david ben-gurion a state at all costs tell us what's behind the title. behind the title is the forts of david b. gori them to establish a jewish state the willingness and awareness that the price will be very high as early as nine hundred nineteen mingora and actually stated that the conflict between israelis and palestinians cannot be solved it can only be managed and so at all costs means among other things that life in the jewish state would be life
12:05 pm
without peace so that's quite a high price to take. and in fact he articulated that as long as there is no peace the state of israel has yet to be created what would you say is left of his dream is there any hope there. oh if being would appear here today he would. be amazed that it's going to find israel is in fact one of the most dramatic success stories of the twentieth century if you compare international statistics you see that israel has always among the top fifteen countries which means that most israelis lead better lives than most other people in the world but of course the future is quite bleak and our major problem we treat is the problem of or future relations with the palestinians or remains unsolved absolutely and i want to ask you
12:06 pm
a little bit more about you know potential solution there because today of course the lasting peace that seems more distant than ever many peace plans failed in the past the major stumbling block usually the goal of this this two state solution which has been proposed do you see peace between israel and the palestinians still is possible will we ever see a two state solution implemented. well i must warn you that i'm always wrong about my predictions if you were to ask me about forty years ago i would probably tell you that by now we will have peace at the present time i am quite pessimistic and as far as i can see most israelis and most palestinians don't believe in peace but i think that the situation can be managed in a much better way than it is particularly in the direction that. people particularly palestinians will lead because lives than they do to day. to day most
12:07 pm
palestinians are under israeli occupation and their. civil rights are human rights are systematically violated and i think that's something that can be changed for a first step and from the palestinian perspective i mean they might also argue that they have been provoked recently after u.s. president donald trump. you know came up with this formal recognition of diverse a lot as the capital of israel saying that he's going to move the embassy there where does that leave israel and the prospects for peace. i think that that's like many things president trump do does not really very significant and that's not something that changes the everyday life over whether students or israelis it's really a symbolic gesture. i don't think that it has very big significance before we go i would just like to circle back around now and talk about the subject
12:08 pm
of your bout of course israel's founder how it's been glory and seen by israelis and palestinians today would you say. being gorean is. very very popular today there's not a day without some mentioning awful of him in the in the israeli media and i think the reason why he is so popular is that there are many israelis will long for statesmanship with integrity which they obviously don't try and with mr nixon you know for the palestinians when gorean is of course the originator of the national tragedy rightfully so do you see him that way. we want to thank you so much tom israeli historian and journalists we thank you so much for sharing your insights on this anniversary seventy years since the founding of israel we appreciate. thank you thank you. only in time in other news here in germany an attack on tuesday
12:09 pm
evening has raised concerns for the safety of jews in the capital city borough land two young men say that they were beaten up for wearing a traditional head covering for jewish men in a twist it turns out that the pair they weren't even jewish german chancellor angela merkel has condemned the alleged incident and promised to take action. the victim recorded the incident with his smartphone that didn't stop his attacker. the attacker repeatedly shouted. which means do his victims a twenty one year old israeli and his twenty four year old german moroccan friend. and. companion for the attacks. the two victims spoke with d.w. and explained that they are not even jewish that the yarmulke was a bit of a game an experiment to find out how dangerous it would be to walk around berlin as a jew the result of. i could not sleep last night.
12:10 pm
my body in various places. and i must say i just feel less safe. the incident took place a trendy middle class prince lower back district not a high crime neighborhood it's an area where residents rarely encounter violent all to cations. monday. always think it takes place in the city's outskirts of the districts you think are violent anyway but this year i don't get to hear this. come on you. have to do something about this from the very standard schools training centers and have more reports from people who experience this kind of thing. jewish community has been growing in recent years many have been moving here from russia but also many young israelis see berlin s affordable livable and less
12:11 pm
as the place for the whole course originated but it seems to have become risky. in public. we had recently experienced increasing anti-semitic incidents seen here they include physical threats and injuries so we have to say that the security situation for people who were clearly identifiable as jews has worsened. with the german government appointed its first commissioner to combat anti-semitism just a few days ago. we have to prepare the schools equip the teachers with learning materials and maybe also with additional training in order to respond to these things and to make people aware of what's happening and. adam has sustained some minor injuries but nothing is known about his attacker that police
12:12 pm
are investigating. and for more let's bring in our political correspondent thomas sparrow who is following developments from berlin said thomas have we learned anything new about the alleged perpetrators here we just saw in that video what are you hearing from police. still investigating the issue regarding the perpetrator or the perpetrator because according to one of the statements. they were attacked by three people so they're actually looking for for three people something particularly important is that the investigation is being carried out by department when the german criminal police would actually deals with politically motivated crimes which is from the right wing seen from the left wing scene or also involving foreigners so that is one issue that has to be taken into consideration because there are questions that obviously regarding this case and only about the perpetrators but also the complete authenticity of the video on the events that
12:13 pm
surrounded that video have not been independently verified and as we wait for that verification though we have to mention that it is an important conversation to have because this is not an isolated alleged incident here there are in fact more than a thousand i understand anti-semitic crimes reported last year alone in germany thomas's anti semitism growing in the country well what do you say is correct this is not an isolated case there are concerns that i'm the semitism is growing in in the country and that's obviously one of the reasons why for example the german government and now one study would have its first commissioner against the semitism which we saw in our report there if you will look at where all these cases have been happening who is behind the authorities do say that most of those cases come from the right scene although there are also cases regarding the far left scene and there's also concerns about cases within the muslim community so there is certainly
12:14 pm
a wide range of concerns regarding onto semitism in germany and terms what is being done in an attempt to counter the trend. well first and foremost this commissioner as we've just mentioned but they're also calls here in germany for a bigger database for example when it comes to two crimes two anti semitic crimes there's also calls for more support regarding groups that deal with these kind of of issues so those are certainly elements that authorities are probably tackling as well as we just mentioned trying to understand where these anti-semitic crimes are where these anti-semitic tendencies come from whether it is from the far right scene or the far left scene or whether it is also present among muslim communities thomas sparrow in berlin thank you. let's get a quick check now some other stories that have been making news around the world u.s. president donald trump says that he is preparing to walk out of planned talks with
12:15 pm
the north korean leader kim jong un and if they are not quote fruitful after discussing the planned sit down with the japanese prime minister president trump said that maximum pressure must be maintained on north korea until the nation denuclearizing is. turkish president recha type area one has announced plans to hold early elections on june twenty fourth the early polls will hasten turkey switch from a parliamentary system to a presidential one that will strengthen the airline's power the announcement came just before turkey's parliament voted to extend the country's state of emergency which grants the government sweeping powers. they're watching d.w. news still to come on the program it's something that hasn't been seen in saudi arabia for nearly forty years we will tell you why this audience had the hottest ticket in the country last night. but first we're talking about german carmaker opel with first who is here with us now and we're talking about oprah because some
12:16 pm
worrying signals are coming from the german car maker that was last year only taken over by the french p.s. a group of german chancellor angela merkel says the german government may need to come to the aid of opel but she also expects parent company p.s.a. to stick to the commitments had made when it took over the company the future of one of the german factories is at risk of the shop stewards in the eastern town of eyes enough rejected wage concessions p.s.a. had demanded the minister change her commitment to invest in a production line for a new model that is so far p.s.a. has been on able to reverse shrinking sales at opel but the comic a c.e.o. says its restructuring is showing first signs of success. but let's bring in our financial correspondent standing by at the frankfurt stock exchange daniel can opel really deliver what p.s.a. wants it to do. well that's the thing at the beginning there were optimistic now
12:17 pm
many never knew that the task the whole work could be a little bit too big and as a result they could maybe lose their job that's going to be the main topic a different opel employees meeting around the country just yesterday it was announced that vauxhall and opel are slimming at their dealer network the nameplates will cancel their contracts off their entire out one thousand six hundred european dealers of which four hundred are here in germany and about three hundred and twenty in the u.k. p.s.a. has been very clear from day one after years of losses opal needs to come back into the winning zone under the ownership of general motors this was not the case since one thousand nine hundred ninety nine so the whole work was clear until twenty twenty the company needs to be profitable again the financial situation has improved a bit but again problems now during the first quarter when opel sold twenty five thousand less cars less than they expected which is of course not good for business and also not good for further talks and negotiations with p.s.a.
12:18 pm
then you know there was a lot of hope amongst the old workers when p.s.a. took over from g.m. from the americans have those hopes been dashed now. yeah lots of hope and lots of frustration at the moment we have to keep in mind that the upper levels in germany only have a job guarantee until the very end of this year already at this moment many employees of the company are on mandatory reviews working hours we are hearing that up to one thousand employees at opel the smallest production facility in aizen are could be losing their jobs the mood has changed at the beginning they were really optimistic about the new ownership stating that p.s.a. really knows what you are peon customers want now many are worried that they could be losing their jobs don't have hope in france or thank you. the middle necron dreams of giving the euro zone its own budget and finance minister from berlin all his nine nine they don't want they that is the germans don't want to
12:19 pm
foot the bill for other countries debts and voters here have repeatedly made that very very clear and i'm unlikely to be wooed by her friend i'm on a micro to open a purse. a red carpet for your up french president and manuel mccomb is pushing for big changes soon he thinks there is strength and more unity and wants more competencies and defense of law and asylum now the phone didn't drift form is a third indispensable front before the end of this term of office we need to define a roadmap for progress on the banking union and the establishment of a budgetary capacity promoting stability and convergence in the euro zone business but i don't know. if you see. the vision more money and responsibility for europe manuel mcconnell says it's the only way to make the e.u. stronger as well as more efficient and united. not everyone is applauding though
12:20 pm
germany in particular is skeptical conservatives there say the plan sound like they carry a hefty price tag there is concern germany will be given a big bill but have little influence on where the cash is spent but time is running out european elections are sent for next year by then member states should have a road map for the union's future. today to me because he really needs allies if you can show support from the likes of on the level of home he'd have a much easier job in pushing through key economic reforms which continue to draw fire from the french unions there were more war calls on wednesday by rail workers only one in three high speed trains was running bringing misery for thousands of travelers more strikes are planned for today in what is adding up to be the biggest test of macross presidency today.
12:21 pm
who owns the railways they ask we do comes the answer french rail unions are well organized and workers like train drivers. are ready for battle when it comes to defending their privileges. since service don't go and rail workers are more than ready to fight it out we're not interested in sitting around and talking about it during our coffee break i'm proud of being a train worker so what. rail workers enjoy considerable perks like retirement as early as fifty two and free rail travel but the railways are heavily in debt president macross says reform is essential yes. passengers are suffering because of the strike their working days are longer and some companies could even go bust because of it we need to sort this out i want to make it quite clear we will push through the reforms because we have to have change
12:22 pm
. and say experts pushing through may be easier than it looks. good. when strikers find themselves in the minority that can make the more radical work public opinion quickly turns against them. then they can't maintain the strike and have to give up because that could give mark on the opportunity to push through his reforms without unions agreeing. to of your specific whatever from. your and his colleagues won't give up without a fight this after all is about where their futures are headed. he. moves all we will business from now we're off to cuba no absolutely we're going to talk about cuban leader raul castro because he has moved one step closer to retirement after ten years in office the country's parliament has proposed vice president. as his successor he was born after the nine hundred fifty nine revolution in which fidel
12:23 pm
castro ousted us back dictator gentil back tista now after years climbing the ranks of the communist party lawmakers consider him to be a safe bet to inherit the ideological mantle of castro is an engineer by trade when grace is technology and is seen as being socially liberal so let's have a look at what people in cuba are expecting. a regime change it is not the era of fidel and raul castro may be coming to an end but the cuba they built remains largely unchanged cubans expect the new president to continue his predecessor's legacy of slowly modernizing the communist country. that i mean most of all honestly it's all the same to me as long as things keep improving all is well. thought out the. nominee miguel diaz can now would be the first leader of communist cuba who was not a member of the revolutionary generation he is likely to carry on reforms
12:24 pm
introduced by current president raul castro such as allowing citizens to run small businesses and reducing restrictions on foreign travel cuba's new generation is optimistic. oh i would like to travel i'd like to travel and see the world. while many cubans dream of change the social programs of the castros communist party remain popular d.s. can now a party loyalist is a conscious choice for a cautious country. in cuba the revolution will not be jeopardized. some sports news for you now and in the semifinals of the german cup on wednesday night frankfurt be chalco one nail and with a spy in munich in the final in the seventy fifth minute a corner from jonathan de guzman and luca joe that won the battle in the pot to hold the only goal of the match it looks like frankel de santo at equalised shouted

hollywood blockbuster the black panther for many it's an historic moment. i think a lot a lot of things are changing a lot versus how they were opening up. where catching up with everything that's happening in the world it will cinemas were banned in the one nine hundred eighty s. following a campaign by religious hardliners. crown prince mohammed bin solomon has reversed that decision as part of a push to modernize the country but it's also about making money and creating new jobs as the kingdom tries to diversify its economy away from dependency on oil. our markets is by far the largest in the region. a sizable market is who's very lucrative a lot of. the stores are so excited to be part of this industry just for all the excitement some things look set to stay the same for now at least women
