i mean. player. plays . the bank . this as if we knew his life for berlin a changing of the guard in have that on cuba swears in its new president speak well of the us kind of no thing hand-picked successor to row construct the us canal house to continue the country's revolution more than sixty years on from the communist upraising also coming up israel turns seventy as the nation celebrates
8:01 pm
its founding the prime minister calls on its release to make sacrifices to ensure the country's future sixty plus the suspect in an alleged anti semitic attack plans himself into grilling police authorities say easy teenage asylum seekers who arrived in germany from syria back in twenty fifteen. and also coming up on the program a church offensive for change french president everyone mccullough comes to berlin in search of e.u. were formed by chance on the miracle gives his crazy proposals a lukewarm reception and a let them eat popcorn and a saudi arabia's water grants are subject to another limited reform this time as the return of the cinema for the first time in almost four decades. the but. only iraq thanks very much for a company everyone. cuba has
8:02 pm
a new president and his name isn't castro for the first time since the communist revolution more than a half century ago the country's leader does not heal from the castro family the girl the has been sworn in as the country's new president replacing it would cost row over ninety nine percent of lawmakers bank d.s. canel for the post for which he was the only candidate he could rule for a maximum of two five year terms the s. canel climbed through the ranks of the communist party for decades he's now said his mandate is to give continuity to the cuban revolution. all that is that as a role castro will remain the leader of the communist party until at least twenty twenty one but cubans say their country continues on the path towards prosperity. a region change it is not the era of fiedel and ral castro may be coming to an end
8:03 pm
but the cuba they built remains launch of the unchanged cubans expect the new president to continue his predecessor's legacy of slowly modernizing the communist country. that will mean more of its all the same for me honestly as long as things keep improving and all is well thought out here. miguel diaz can now will now be the first leader of communist cuba who was not a member of the revolutionary generation he is expected to carry on reforms introduced by now ex president raul castro such as allowing citizens to run small businesses and reducing restrictions on foreign travel cuba's new generation is optimistic that would like to travel i'd like to travel and see the world. while many cubans dream of change the social programs of the castros communist party remain popular dance canal a party loyalist is a cautious choice for
8:04 pm
a cautious country in cuba the revolution will not be jeopardized. are either with us now is cuban human rights activists an advocate johnson ours who joins us from miami florida a very good day sir is the as kelly all someone who is open to change are we witnessing a transition of power. we're not witnessing a transition to power we're not even witnessing a succession as of yet. is a place holder in a particular position which is the presidency and this is not the first time between one nine hundred fifty not in one nine hundred seventy six goals was president of cuba and that didn't mean much the country was run by fidel and raul castro then and raul castro will remain now as head of the communist party and he will continue to run cuba. mr de is going to tell if he has other ideas and plans on acting on them will no longer be president we've seen that in previous years
8:05 pm
with other young dental fide reformers such as phillipa but is it ok carlos law. that when they were done to fight as having dissenting ideas they were quickly pushed aside by human rights situation the country remains sorry mrs starr is why i say slaked a facelift all right so why take a face lift. to have a younger looking figure in the in the presidency to be able to give this impression of change without changing and frankly i think it has to do with a dynastic succession of the castro family role castro is getting on in years he'll probably die in the next couple of years as his brother already has and he has his son alejandro castro a colonel in the cuban intelligence service who was the point man in the negotiations between the united states and cuba and the normalization of relations not mr de is going to. row castro ties his daughter my d.l.
8:06 pm
acosta who is also in the national assembly and has important positions in the government and his son in law general by the name of rodriguez is the man who runs the economy in cuba so you can already see the the structure there of a dynastic succession of then truly you referenced the economy there and i want to pick up on that because this new president does have a very difficult balancing act to a carry out the economy desperately needs to be resuscitated in cuba and this is happening just as the u.s. is completely stepping away and taking on a more isolated isolationist position do you think he's the man to do it. as i said this is it's an apparatus it's not an individual i think the main crisis economically for cuba has been the implosion of venezuela i think that they're looking with hope to the victory of men well up as well but i thought in mexico and
8:07 pm
having an ally there who would provide subsidies from mexico to cuba as venezuela did over the previous decade and a half and they obviously also have been reaching out to russia china and other countries to provide them with subsidies and support over the last few years and this is ours in terms of human rights how impatient are cubans sedate with the pace of change. well the human rights situation remains horrible women are beaten regularly sunday when they tried to march peacefully the ladies in white eduardo cut their concepts on the head of the christian liberation movement that had the largest mobilizations of cubans in the past for change in the burrell a project where over thirty thousand cubans have signed calling for human rights reforms risking their jobs and their own safety in doing so has been imprisoned since november thirtieth to two thousand and sixteen was stabbed repeatedly at the end of december of two thousand and seventeen and ten thousand cubans just
8:08 pm
a few weeks ago signed a petition requesting his release when the christian liberation movement tried to deliver it. woman by name but also maria rodriguez she and her colleague were detained and held for twenty four hours in the ten thousand signatures seized but the fact that ten thousand cubans would sign that petition demanding the release of the prisoner of conscience cubans inside of cuba indicates that there is a desire for change there is a desire for change when human rights activist john swire is joining us from miami florida thank you very much. thank you. well our president to be good the u.s. kind o. was also a leading voice in the internet push so as cuba ushers in a new political era many residents will be looking to see if changes could be on the way to the country's shoddy internet infrastructure the u.s. think tank freedom house calls cuba one of the world's least connected and most repressive countries regarding internet access but that's not stopping people from surfing chatting and connecting online with some clever workarounds and thankfully
8:09 pm
we've got that karl has been here to tell us more about that so if you're a cuban in cuba what do you do to get online it's not easy it's really not easy though i mean there's a lack of funding the u.s. economic embargo affects this as well as of course government restrictions cuban citizens look they don't really have home internet access very few people have mobile data plans on their phone so if you want to log on and you're in cuba you basically have to go outside to a government run why fi hotspot for access you buy a prepaid card from it takes ah that's the government run telecommunications agency there these cards they have an access code and a password and they're linked to your government id so you're probably being tracked when you're online as well i was actually in cuba last year these are very familiar scenes for me you see cubans and tourists gathering together at hundreds of these wife i hotspots they're all across the country you just see people with devices they're chatting they're logging on they're checking their e-mails you know
8:10 pm
but even with these new hotspots those are set up in a brown twenty fifteen the internet honestly is still a luxury for many cubans and this is what we're talking about here it's just expensive take a look at the average cuban salary it's only around thirty u.s. dollars a month one hour of access of these hotspots cost one u.s. dollar you can do the math that's expensive that means nearly half of cubans just don't log on to the internet at all and as we mentioned you know very few business workers or anyone has a home or work access to the into. now that's really pretty much limited to these hot spots there where you can be followed if the government wants to so many restrictions that not making it easy but still they found some creative solutions to work around here that cubans are creative we know that i mean you have to make do with what you have in cuba and they found a unique way to really connect and even distribute digital content amongst themselves and that's called at the seminar which means the weekly package this is in a legal package of digital content it's distributed physically all over the country
8:11 pm
and it's using kind of the semi underground network of digital dealers and this is what this package looks like so it's literally a u.s.b. stick with about a terabyte of data it includes the latest t.v. shows music you've got sporting events video games phone apps even advertisements a little bit of everything that we're used to accessing on the internet every day right but it doesn't have everything and this is one reason why authorities seem to tolerate this package even subscribe to it many of them do it's because what it doesn't include and here's some of the things that you will not find on this u.s.b. stick that's things like pornography religious content anything that's outwardly political really anything that could run afoul of the country's communist regime or government censors that's not on their own we don't know exactly where they get the stuff but it seems like it's likely downloaded somewhere in the us and then physically shipped in the cube and from there it's just distributed awesome
8:12 pm
sounds like a lot of content is coming from outside cuba and there's that wave right you see u.s.b. stick what about things produced by cubans themselves and what cuba does have some kind of homegrown a video of loggers there and they became famous over this u.s.b. network the package but now actually it's starting to open up a little bit more and we're seeing some cubans making it big on you tube and this is one of those you tubers his name is frank comma yetis and he specializes in showing people around cuba showing off various parts of the island in his videos you see an episode here. he's actually showing you what one dollar can buy you in terms of what you can eat on the streets of havana looks actually pretty yummy to me i just think that you have to upload his videos those through his very slow internet those hot spots so as he said in an interview recently it's just it's still not easy to become a big you tube or that last video at around two hundred thousand views over out of pretty good and we'll see what happens with this new regime of the internet continues to open up a little bit more into the art karl nasa thank you so much greatly appreciate it.
8:13 pm
and i'm going to hand you over to helena now for the latest business news. r. and i thank you very much now china's communist ministry says the country's well prepared to handle any negative effects from its trade dispute with the united states is terrifying on u.s. imports will not have a big impact overall on its domestic industries this week the u.s. commerce department said it had banned american companies from selling parts to chinese telecom equipment maker is that the seven is. the power struggle between the u.s. and china is reaching new business sectors. trans administration is now taking aim at c.t.e. a chinese smartphone producer and network supplier the reason given is that c.t.e. exports telecoms equipment to iran and north korea countries which are on u.s. sanctions lists that of washington has long been worried about the company's close
8:14 pm
ties to the chinese government. c.t.e. was the world's fourth largest mobile infrastructure company in twenty seventeen after fellow chinese company who are y. and european players ericsson. but now its market share is in serious danger. it could cause immense damage to c.t.e. if you ask companies were barred from doing business with it because they supply thirty percent of its equipment. china's ministry of commerce says it will protect the interests of chinese companies. we hope we won't see an escalation of china u.s. trade friction. but as we've said china is prepared for all possibilities. should the us side keep moving in the wrong way we will fight back resolutely and
8:15 pm
fight to the end. we. the conflicts next week could come as early as next week when the u.s. will publish a broader list of tariffs on one hundred billion dollars worth of chinese goods. drought has been a serious problem for years in south africa so much so that in recent months cape town to create a state of emergency there activities like watering the lawn washing cars filling swimming pools for example that all banned and they can lead to hefty fines but it's not only the cities that are suffering as a result of the lack of water agriculture is also very hard hit. martin use cholesky soros rise as he drives troops to transplantation it hasn't seen proper rain for quite some time all twenty seven thousand five hundred trees on his fields need water otherwise they're dry off. if that happens cholesky will go

bankrupt that's why he's invested in new ideas to save water. we throw chip chills below the trees so it. keeps the soil moisture you can see the in my fingers going in. it's nice in the way. but when i do it yet stewart the line with these very good underneath the chip sauce and then you save a lot of water you don't have to take much but that's not enough to spot more than two hundred kilometers of drip irrigation tubes so that all of those trees can get at least some water a large citrus tree needs up to one hundred liters per day what you're going to lose is soirées because there's not enough water so the. citrus will be smaller and if if they smaller your volume the smaller and then your loses on profit so it makes a big difference. the western cape region is especially affected by the drought

flood this season experts estimate losses of almost five hundred million dollars in the agricultural sector the vegetable harvest almost half to more than fifty thousand farm workers have lost their jobs many fields are lying fallow martin use cholesky vegetable harvest almost completely fell true now it's a matter of. song it burns it when it gets too out and doesn't have enough water to sunburns it and then you can use it to night shift over and over the way we give it to the peaks the dam is up in the valley it supplies the whole region with water. it's only at the eleven percent mark now if it doesn't rain soon there won't be enough water for crops that would be a catastrophe mark ten years poleski carries on as well as he can for now he has not let go of any office farm where it is yet because those who work for him other

sundown is today with a lavish in jerusalem. but even as the nation that unites to mark this milestone there are sharp divisions within israeli society disagreement is perhaps deepest over the issue of settlements in the occupied west bank the w.'s tanya kramer travel to the west bank to the settlement of escrow there to take a closer look at life there for the israeli raid such outposts are among the country's major achievements for the left they are a blight on israel's international reputation as squatters lies deep in the occupied west bank sixty families live in this illegal israeli outpost near the settlement of she to our own codes have moved to codas thousand years ago with his family it's situated in the middle of an area where palestinians want to establish their state seventy years ago there's nothing here that's not it was empty it's

a real symbol israel. these great friends right here that you know show the leaf shows that we're back where we're coming home we're our home or work come home every year for growing cutoffs conviction made him come here because this land today and some area as it was known in the bible and claims it is jewish land according to international law though the settlements here in the occupied territories are illegal they're said to be one of the main obstacles to a two state solution. in the center of tel aviv to one that is taking part in a demonstration against the israeli government's occupation policy. leftist organizations called for the protest. they're also protesting the use of snipers and recent demonstrations at the gaza border at the beginning of april there is a lot of fear. not an ingrained are hearing from. from their lives enough to

say they think that if the now harm is are at work and. believe it. they think they're down on the other side of the street a few members of the ultra right movement try to disturb the protest in the past few years israel has seen a significant move to the political right the one cause has a left leaning activist and says it's not cool to be on the left anymore she'd like to keep the public debate alive on issues regarding peace with the palestinians and a two state solution the message we stand on these demonstrations is that we must have peace we need to fight for this peace this situation that does not serve us. don posted activities on social media and internet platforms in the hope it will have some influence on other israelis. young is very it is like alan cuts off i'm not interested in

a two state solution he's convinced that the settlements the security of its foreign. military school you learn that if you sitting on the mountain you're protecting the valley this whole area as you did samir is the mountain the whole area of tel aviv is the valley anybody knows if you sit here you're protecting the cities in the valley if you don't sit here you're not protecting a new settlement is being built not far from here officially sanctioned by the government for settlers who were forced to leave their outpost to different realities two points a few seventy years after the founding of the state of israel and the visions for the future could hardly be more different. joining me now for my tel aviv is chairman of the israel council on foreign relations and former israeli ambassador to germany pre more mr palmer thank you very much for coming on and spending time with this the seventy years since the foundation of israel is this
8:23 pm
reason to celebrate or to contemplate. it depends who you ask i mean most people celebrate most people celebrate because this is their tradition because it's independence day because the government does everything to make it as happy as possible to make it as. obvious as possible but of course of many people who are also very critical about what's happening in israel they're not the majority but let's say they are an important part of the population and particularly of the intelligentsia. mr people president rivlin and prime minister netanyahu have repeated that israel's independence was its ability to defend itself a certainly a very important trait to have on or if country that is has to deal with so many of security issues but what can your country offer the palestinians that would help
8:24 pm
you become more secure. you mean what we can a what we are doing or what the government is aiming at because what we've got is very simple we can separate from the palestinians allow them to have an independent palestinian state as it was meant to be seventy years ago. and of course the local for. everything necessary for the security of israel what we will do what the government does and what the government wants to do is to develop these settlements in the occupied territories so all this will lead to with that we will not be able to operate on the palestinians and this will lead eventually to the arc to the sation of all of the palestinian territories nobody says that openly but this is what's happening in reality fred slowly slowly but this is what we're going to so are we also headed to a one state solution is kind of
8:25 pm
a two state solution. yes but if it will be a one state solution what does mean it means two nations and one state i mean you can and next the territories without the next in the population and when you annex a population the question remains do you when next the west bank or rolls of the gaza strip because the gaza strip is still part of palestine no matter how you look at it than the population sees a dog or a field the dial boy so the question is what do you do with all the population do you grant them the israeli citizenship war law i mean like we do already with these radio arabs so-called israeli arabs the out one million of them war or do you would force apartheid but that won't work in the twenty first century you can't impose apartheid anymore aren't i want to go over to a bilateral relations recently or germany israeli relations appear to have cooled
8:26 pm
down a bit and that's just not down to the chemistry between mr netanyahu and the chancellor merkel but also issues like the status of jerusalem the two state issue and so on and so forth would you agree with some of some of that analysis. look i think this is a divergence of point of view between germany and israel totally officially totally and if you look at the polls in germany and polled in israel it's extremely interesting to compare in nineteen sixty five when we established of robotic relations eighty percent of the germans would probably israeli and only twenty percent of the israelis wanted to have any contact with germany today it's the other way round eighty percent of the germans are not that the israeli but they're reserved because of the policy of israel in the occupied territories and about the palestinian problems and eighty percent of these radios are very pro german and
8:27 pm
totally in the same numbers but reversed so i think slowly and slowly the german government will have to align itself to the policies of the european union so far the german government still feels that it has a special operation towards the jews and towards the state of israel and it holds its opposition bloc but that cannot hold. avi pre more chairman of the israel council on foreign relations a former israeli ambassador to germany sir thank you for spending time with us. you're watching the dover news we still have a lot more to tell you about including the state archives of controversial german filmmaker elaine we finished all i've been officially canada over to a girl in foundation well they shed new light on the filmmakers notorious cooperations with the nazi. and the one hope of reforming the euro zone friends of

suspects in an alleged anti semitic attack in berlin has turned himself into police the entire incident was recorded by one of the victims he and his friend were wearing jewish style skullcaps when they were attacked by a man with a belt. they later told every news they were wearing the kickoff for the first time to show an israeli friend it was safe to do so in the german capital. all right we can get you a more now and. joins me now from a problem entry studios oliver the police have confirmed that one man has been taken into custody what do we know about him and what is he being accused of as fact he handled himself in today as you mentioned very quickly after the police was able to find out his identity there were there were many eyewitness reports following this incident so we headed himself in today what we do know about him
8:32 pm
right now is that he's a nineteen year old refugee who came to syria from syria to germany back in two thousand and fifteen at the height of the refugee crisis and the that he's now accused of criminal assault by the way the investigations right now there carried out by the german criminal police and that's a unit that's usually in charge for politically motivated crime such as from the right wing scene for instance they're now investigating this case as well and the simply shows how seriously the this case of and assume it is in all cases of anisim it is of a general are taken in germany also there are many questions that are not answered yet many delts race to deal thin to city of this video we don't know what anything about the events basically that led to this attack we also don't know if the video is real or staged but we will certainly get more answers soon as the perpetrator just handed himself into the absolutely and you'll be on the story for us this
8:33 pm
isn't the first incident that raises the specter of anti-semitism in germany contextualize this for us if you will oliver is this threat of anti semitism increasing in this country. well of course there are concerns especially on a day like this after such an attack that took place by the way in berlin only in the capital of the world there was a rise of sixty percent and a semitic incidents just last year according to a statistic that accounts only full of the city of berlin though and these events like yesterday they led to a massive public outcry even the german chancellor felt the strong urge to publicly condemn this attack very quickly afterwards that's also one of the reasons why a germany has a commissioner is going to be put in charge very quickly from now and reporting directly to the german government and investigating of all reasons and backgrounds
8:34 pm
all of and isn't it isn't on the rise here in germany another debate this on on the role of the muslim community here but this is certainly also a homegrown problem we just had the video circulating all the german citizen insulting the owner of a jewish restaurant just a little while ago so it all shows whole sensitive this issue really is in germany that is always looked at from the historical perspective. reporting thank you french president and the german chancellor merkel have put on a united front today at talks here in berlin but the pair disagree about how to reform the european union meconis pushing for deeper ties but he's facing stiff resistance from a cautious america they're hoping to reach a compromise ahead of an e.u. summit in june but for now their plans are work in progress. it's a conversation the french president's been waiting months to begin. but as he arrived
8:35 pm
it was chancellor merkel's turn to white. her choice of venue for today's talks was berlin's home bold for him a cultural center of national importance that still under construction. with the european union also in need of reconstruction the symbolism was clear in a world full of new challenges metal in my core a keen to build a more robust bloc joining hands to kick start the legendary franker german engine is a first step in that direction. but their success will depend on reaching common positions ahead of a key european summit in june they have a long list of issues to agree upon. it's good not to like because we have different points of departure germany and france have differing opinions on some issues so what we need now is open debate and the ability to find compromise on this potty did it mean we want to find common responses to the challenges we're
8:36 pm
facing today and to the challenges of tomorrow as we prepare our future that's what we've committed ourselves to do and what we shall accomplish for the e.u. summit in june we know that means a great deal of work for us have a new civil war to toddle in to join in addition to the french journalist reminded merkel about a german writer she'd quoted when michael first visited last year helen has surround his famous sentence in every beginning lies a certain magic he asked her whether the magic was still alive it's the first time i think it when i quoted that sentence i wasn't fully aware of how long it can take to form a government so we decided to conserve that magic we put it away for a few months but now it's coming back because of a it's going to be done. with the franco german conversation on europe's future resuming in water appears to be a friendly atmosphere all eyes are now on a joint meeting of the two countries cabinets in june. and helena is here now because do expect my current to ask america for

a hand when it comes to opel and the german government may come to the rescue although the or to manufacture is of course in french hands chancellor merkel urging the p.s.a. group to keep its promises before buying european arm of general motors last year valid to up hold job guarantees at opel but shop staff have rejected wage concessions demanded by p.s.a. there in exchange for a commitment to invest in a production line for a new model opals factory in eyes enough now the com a continues to lose money recently management pressed unions to forgo a four point three percent pay rise to allow for further investments in germany our correspondent daniel corp has more. lots of uncertainty germany's carmaker opel the company is having a really hard time to complete the homework off their new owner appears a their goal is very simple opal who has been reporting losses since one thousand

nine hundred nine mostly under the ownership of general motors needs to be profitable again and that by twenty twenty p.s.a. has promised in the past their jobs will be cut but the opel learners only have a job guarantee until the very end of this year if p.s.a. runs out of patients opel might have to fire up to one thousand people most likely in their smallest production location in the city of eisenhower german chancellor angela merkel has reminded peers in many times not to forget what they promise to thousands of opel employees before taking over the company. financial correspondent daniel cope there now many parents grandparents or relatives of small children will likely not be surprised to learn that the toy industry is big business in fact globally it brings in ninety billion dollars in sales every year and get this companies end up making more if the toys they sell a targeted goals or boys i'm sure you know the troops fashion dolls for example for
8:39 pm
gold fost cars on the other hand for the boys. now i'm sure rather often you've heard encouragement for boys to push a trade around their railways set some of the fast cars there or for example go might be told to play nicely with the dolls needless to say if you are the parents of boys and girls you might end up heading to the tail not once but twice that's certainly good news for the toy industry but money is not the only issue here there's also the argument that giving children toys which other people have decided all befitting of their gender limits their dreams and their potential so let's talk more about this now with dr petit she joins us in the studio she's a professor at the center of into place an interdisciplinary women's and gender studies at the technical university. and great to have you with us this evening thank you very much now you were part of a jury which gave
8:40 pm
a so-called negative prize for toys which the jury considered reinforced gender stereotypes we have some of them here on the table so i want to take a look at them right now first we've got the barbie dream house science kit which you can just see here here's the barbie and her lab coat she's accompanied by a test tube filled with what looks to be coat hangers so why did you decide that using barbie was is not a good way of getting girls into science this talk it was well intended by the company i think from their own point of view by the limits the activities that girls are drawn into a very much to clichés as we know them for example they design a washing machine or clothing or something that just turns around and you don't know exactly what it might be also in this last week you might recognize from chemistry you can just color

a flower bud who can't do anything really experimental and the microscope that comes with this target is very small like this one so you can't even. use it as a microscope there is hardly you know revolutionary stuff it's not exactly lifting the atom this is another one which you've actually got is out i'll just show that to all of you is this is a a cuddly toy drill and on it it says close up and me me what's the problem with this it's a power drill it's a cuddly toy how is this problematic we think that this is problematic because it's aiming at the father's papa and the son's to me and it's portrayed in the spot in the commercial very much in the way that this is the wave prop to draw fathers or a tract fathers to do care work in the family and we believe that cuddly toys can be used any cuddly toy can of course be used also by fathers and it's also not addressed to what mothers mothers can also you know use additional kind yeah and
8:42 pm
it's not exactly representative of all types of families these days either but is there research to back this up that children who play with gendered toys end up having a very limited view of what's available to them in terms of career choice future possibilities their own potential i actually i wish there would be a big amount of research to back this up i don't know of it yet but what we know of is that stereotype threat research has been done so if you confront a social group or individuals that belong to a social group with a stereotype that does addressing this social group then this group for example. does not so good in testing like and abilities like math so exam for example if you girls take a math test and are confronted before they take this test with a stereotype they perform lower than they would if they are not being confronted like that is the toy industry changing any time soon do you think they profit from

these gendered toys because that's the real concern here isn't it well obviously they profit because gender marketing is new. phenomenon that started to more after two thousand actually so it's increased yes it increased and if it wouldn't work we wouldn't have the possible to buy these products of course you're right thank you very much for your insights talk to petra looked professor at the center for into disciplinary women's and gender studies at the technical university here great to have your insights here on data thank you for interviewing me. now doing the lights and pop the popcorn because it's movie time in saudi arabia the kingdom has opened its first movie theater in nearly four decades it's part of a drive toward social reform by crown prince mohammed bin psalm on the cinema in the capital riyadh how the screening of the hollywood blockbuster black panther while the audience was right invitation only but tickets for the general public go

markets is by far the largest in the region. a sizable market is very lucrative a lot of the best sellers are excited to be part of this just three just for all the excitement some things look set to stay the same for now at least women will only be allowed to go to the cinema with a male guardian. the government will also sense the content but nonetheless saudi arabia seems to be changing its tune. it has been another big week for balls a new video assistant referee system marketers from the force joins me now crazy couple of days yet it really has been a monday we had in the minds game the v.o.r.
8:46 pm
being decided after the half time whistle freiburg got to come back from the changing room there are no a controversy last night in the german cup semifinal but today we've actually had some referees talking about it's the world cup referees telling us what they think about the system so let's take a look. the video assistant referee system is the biggest change in football in decades but it's fair to say it's had its thieving problems. minds were given a penalty after the half time whistle in monday's bombing is that your clash with a furious freiburg when the referee was alerted to act and won't the decision was correct but features refereeing chief says technology cannot put a stop to all controversies. many to petition so something could be clear for in a way could be not one another and this is not what the we answer to i repeat for those a mistake which in the past. created
8:47 pm
a big problem so certainly it would be a. favor has been running a training camp this week the referees to get more used to v.a. are ahead of its use in the world cup in june and july video decisions will be shown in the stadium big screens in russia meaning fans will finally understand what is going on. i feel very comfortable working with those people in a similar as for us it doesn't bring in. order and if each of the peach so we are very very comfortable we also started in africa we are also using a. few ok so it's not all undisputed on donovan's so i am very comfortable. the referees seem happy but many fans are still to be convinced it could be one of the most talked about well copes in history. right and the reason for that
8:48 pm
mark is of course this technology will be used for the first time at the world cup how prepared are the referees are they ready for this well obviously they say that they're very ready because they've got to say what people want them to say but there's still a long way to go in there is there are problems there and. football isn't like all the sports like tennis that uses video review because it's you know it's out in tennis balls not like that it's of a game you know five ten referees might say it's a penalty of a five say it's not a penalty and that's what hasn't really been factored into this debate so we'll see how it works in the world cup but as we've seen this week there's all sorts of things that can crop up that no one really felt about exactly there are a lot of armchair referee since we're all over the world well just this week let's talk about that there was really controversial the players were almost in their locker room they were they were asked to come back what has been the reaction to all of that the whole freiburg a few areas i mean freiburg conceded appealing the result of the game they were so
8:49 pm
angry about it but they kind of looked at it and said no we're not going to appeal . it seems well the right decision was made it was a clear one ball book the fact that they were basically off the field when the referee called them back is obviously something that isn't president overseas you can't if you have another will go up then last night in the german cup semifinal we had a similar issue involving shouted they were one goal down front for winning and in the last minute frankly santo forty scored but the referee blew and said it was handball but we can just see here i'm not so sure it was humble and the mistake the referee made was he blew his whistle at that moment so blowing the whistle then means the game stops and you go over the car was a goal after you've blown the whistle if you'd waited a little bit and then not to be are you might have four hundred on let's check and if it was not humble you could have awarded the goal the have a difficulty as i said earlier i've looked at that replay many many times first of all yet clear humble and i look to no wrangle i thought hang on i'm not sure it is humble so soon i don't. feel one of the big criticisms for fans is being kept in
8:50 pm
the dark is that issue being addressed yes because they going to decide but they have decided that at the world cup in russia we're going to have the video reviews on the big screen in a statement so fans will get more of an idea what's happening. but it will only go on the big screen once the decision is made to those still be a bit of delay so the phones won't be totally happy margret us thank you so very much greatly appreciate it. and we're going to bring you some tennis now and rafael nadal has eased through to the quarterfinals of the monte carlo masters of it but he won't have to face long time rival novak djokovic in the last eight that's after djokovic a lost a grueling three set match to austria's dominique a team of the former world number one who was outclassed for much of the encounter team wrapped up these six seven six two six three victory on his second match point .

many critics agree there was hardly an artist in the last century as controversial as lenny riefenstahl the german filmmaker who died in two thousand and three at the age of one hundred one was famous for her beautifully shot documentaries that helped define and glorify the nazi static leaving a stain on her reputation for the rest of her life on our estate archives have been officially handed over to him and karen hopes that from our culture desk is here to tell us more this is quite a big deal absolutely it's a big deal for a couple of reasons first of all because it actually was born here in berlin not very far from where we are right now in fact and this is something that she said a number of years ago that she wanted the city to have it's a coming home of sorts and also because now that we finally have all of this incredible material it can be critically and properly sorted and evaluated and

possibly there could be a reevaluation of the role of this incredibly controversial woman but let's have a look first at what all this state and company. the estates of german filmmaker than he refused talk insists of seven hundred boxes crammed with photos film stock manuscripts that says in files refinish dog was a meticulous collector she threw away almost nothing so far only a small part of it has been evaluated. this is not really because of course it's the perspective of lenny refinished there was certainly be a lot of interesting new material but it's too early to say whether. it will be reassessed as a result of it on his arm. that he riefenstahl wrote film history triumph of the will most notorious work from nine hundred thirty four is a grandiose staging of the nazi party rally in europe.

the estate includes first drafts context sheets and photos of her important work a limpia two part film about the olympic games of nine hundred thirty six was high old as an aesthetic masterpiece. but let me read from star never shook off the stigma of being an artist who collaborated with the no seas the estate could provide new evidence so far no personal correspondence with the nazi leader has been found. try to reinvent herself after the war in the one nine hundred sixty s. pictures of the new troy in sudan were internationally acclaimed. seventy's she learned to dive and captured impressive pictures of the underwater. one surprising document has already surfaced handwritten letter from photographer.

to the ninety eight year old complimenting her on her legs and referencing the legendary animosity between detroit and lenny riefenstahl. how will. always have an eye for the ladies. so this is a real treasure trove for researchers let's focus a little bit on on her movies her films because she makes a monumental feel so that's a very good word because that's probably the best way to describe her style and style was that was incredibly innovative in terms of her visual language and we can see that really best in these two films that were mentioned her documentary of the one nine hundred thirty six olympics in berlin pioneered a lot of techniques that we still see used today in film sports coverage or in advertising even things like for instance using multiple cameras tracking rails

cranes for many of these shots. and and rhythmic montage to music all of that made for incredible dramatic effect and you can see here her obsession with this greek ideal of athletic bodies now far more controversial was this one her documentary of the nine hundred thirty four nazi rally in nuremberg triumph of the will and although she claimed here that she was completely disassociated from their politics i mean it's very clear from these images that they're crafted to mythologize the event there's undeniable glorification of nazi pageantry the data for commission of hitler and see there was specially in the opening sequences of the film and needless to say the budgets were also absolutely enormous practically limitless because of course no money was no object for the nazis when they were trying to get their image right and of course because of those films she was really a pariah after the war and i've got thirty seconds left. this is jury so out on my original today i would say they are i mean we we know from documents that she

definitely adulated hitler at the beginning and if she did distance herself from him it was at a very late stage but hopefully the meticulous research that will come out of these archives is going to answer a number of the questions that still remain about her and they might not because i have my national weather it's all there so i have got a lot to work where they do it i will struggle to talk about this again thank you so much karen greatly appreciated and thank you all for spending this part of your day with us on what our rocket program brand golf is up next go.
