fatalities or expose the extent of the injuries also she's also saying they've arrested the van strife and following reports in local media that she fled the scene on foot. we're also getting the eyewitness reports from the scene one man describing the moment he saw the van slam into pedestrians busy intersection i seen him go ahead i thought he had a heart attack or something so i was trying to chase it out of the way almost trying to catch up see what happened although i seen this guy is crumble i mean he's going seventy eighty clicks he's just hitting people one by one going down. and it was like a nightmare where i seen i was going in for us and i seen a lady with her leg and there is a distance it is really bad i couldn't believe what i see in my nose. everybody hell these people on the streets getting hit one by one post office box getting crumbled up on people and one person god dragged on and there blood is all over

young empress is really bad. i'm so shaky i'm still dying from this i can't believe this is happening this is unbelievable this is on. ok joining me on the line from toronto reporter jeff harrington who works for canada's public service brokaw's the c.b.c. jeff thanks for being with us what's the latest what can you tell us especially these reports unconfirmed reports of multiple fatalities. ok so right off the back christopher if we can give you an update i heard in your introduction there that we thought two lives lost but the update that we're getting now at this point there have been five casualties related to this incident as you described up young street in toronto toward the north of this city what we're hearing from witnesses and such a dramatic clip that we heard there was what you suz are saying that man driving if that curb and driving down the sidewalk fifty sixty seventy
10:04 pm
kilometers per hour just on everything in his way it was a scene at carnage and it has certainly christopher shaken people to the core here in toronto today as we stole from that eyewitness report and jeff do we have confirmation that this was a deliberate attack and suddenly looks as though it was a deliberate attack. to so at this point christopher no confirmation from authorities that this was a deliberate attack but certainly we have heard from multiple out witnesses they are describing that seemingly quite intentionally again talk that curb and started driving down the sidewalk and in their words this was no accident you don't hop at the curb and then start to accelerate at those speeds fifty sixty seventy kilometers per hour going down this sidewalk a video is also a merging of the address the suspected driver with police we have seen video where
10:05 pm
this suspect is holding what appears to be great at police defusing the situation moments after and i would suspect it's now been taken into custody that certainly pursuit for this is going to take some time to get to the bottom of in terms of a motive what prompted this individual at this point to curio something and just have the police said anything about the identity of the suspect. no at this point we have no word on this suspect we're just all starting to string this together it happened a few hours ago and as you can imagine for support the scene has been one of chaos i'm coming to you from downtown toronto right now in the big city but this actually happened further north down the city not too far away street is a major street here so the investigators are p.c. together everything is point we can confirm that to rock to police service they are
10:06 pm
the main investigators in this situation because one of the things that is coming to top up by incident is like this is could it be terrorism related it will try to police will certainly be looking into that at this point and if we do if the toronto police do find. that he wrongdoing there or if it's a national security threat that file will then be turned over to the r.c.m.p. ok jeff many thanks for that jeff herrington in toronto. and they canadian prime minister justin trudeau being speaking this is what he said . obviously we're just learning about the situation through our arts grow to anyone affected we're going to obviously have more to learn and more to say coming out of coming hours the world out of iraq. and we will keep you up to date with that story

10:15 pm
the latest from daniel protectionism i believe is the talk of the child in the city yes both for and against christopher u.s. president ronald trump's threats of tariffs on sparking cooperation among his rivals mexico and the european union taking a stand for free trade abolishing almost all tariffs between them in a new deal today while touring the world's biggest industrial fair in hanover today mexican president enrique pena nieto said he's also optimistic about the renewal of the north american free trade agreement which trump has threatened to tear up. for german engineering companies like bolsheviks wat mexico is a very enticing prospect on the one hand as a market for production robots and other engineering equipment but also the production location something german car makers in particular have capitalized on mexico's geographic location makes it a perfect platform for exports to the u.s. those factors have attracted over ten billion dollars of german investment. germany
10:16 pm
is now the country's third largest trade partner after the u.s. and china and that's with the most. over the last five years mexico has launched important structural reforms as a basis for future development. or york to make it a center of opportunity. and above all to show investors that we are a trustworthy country. being built. on their joint tour of the one of a mess of trade fair german chancellor angela merkel told mexico's president to trade ties between the two countries are also set to expand under the new e.u. mexico free trade agreement but security still poses a major problem along with corruption mexico is also in the midst of tough nafta free trade negotiations with the u.s. and the country elects a new president in july but those uncertainties are unlikely to scare off german investors. german companies find the strings and opportunities in mexico outweigh
10:17 pm
the risks continuing to expand their mexican operations especially in the automobile industry and in the future of mechanical engineering and if the trade to you between the e.u. and mexico goes through the partnership with even stronger. they don't use alexa my hand in that report there now we asked the chief economist of the world trade organization robert koopman if donald trump has a point when he says that we should take another look at free trade if the average joe in single countries like the us don't feel the benefits of globalization. what's interesting is i think that ordinary people feel most of the benefits it's just that it's it's in their lower prices and the greater variety of goods that they get to buy every day it's very diffuse it's very spread out across many many people the people who complain more about it of the firms the feel like they're on
10:18 pm
able to compete with foreign imports and their workers and that's a much more concentrated group of people and they tend to be more vocal they organize because they're more concentrated there of their will organize and complain about the effects of trade our research has shown that the big much bigger effects on employment in competitiveness come about from technological change automation robot ties ation we face a i fish the intelligence going forward so i think there are a lot of challenges but most of those are domestically generated not necessarily generated across borders a new report by human rights watch shows chinese employers continue to discriminate against women and paints the chinese government as one of the worst offenders almost a fifth of over three thousand postings for civil service jobs in the past couple of years showed a preference or outright requirement for male applicants the report also found that
10:19 pm
many jobs which were open to women was sexist pandering to stereotypes demanding the candidate to be beautiful all married with children to ensure she doesn't get pregnant while on the child companies named in the report like ali baba and ten cent claimed they examples were isolated incidents another body due highlighted there almost fifty percent gender balance in see the a management i spoke to china director of human rights watch sophie richardson asking if the report cherry picks the bad examples ignoring the progress made. i think even one is to manage and it's probably safe to say that it was not hard for us to be multiple versions of these ads from each of those companies over the span of about five years but equally problematic our government's own civil service job listings and we noted that in twenty seventeen about thirteen percent of those and stipulate no preference or requirement for men only and in twenty eight thousand
10:20 pm
that actually went up to nineteen percent so almost one in every five government job that said it was for men only use both body do for example one of the companies that you cite says that almost home and senior mid-level managers are women so the progress although those ads that were mentioned terrible the progress also needs to be emphasized yet amazing how many of these companies have offered that up as some sort of credible explanation or justification for even going to another just growing that's already behavior which makes no sense right i mean it's it's good that they're employing people it's women that it's good that they've got limit on their boards but it's still illegal what is your problem it happens to stipulate a preference for one gender over the other and really frankly if they're interested in gender equality they ought to be talking broadly about the skills and qualifications that any applicant should have not at all about what gender they
10:21 pm
should be and just being bad you mention in your poll that china is getting worse when it comes to women's representation why this negative trend. well i think there are a couple of different factors that play into this one is that if you know it's not an accountable government it's not democratically elected. obviously the government itself is violating its own laws so it's not that terribly aggressive in the uk all that making companies and here and those laws it doesn't have a free media and the president she's government has worked hard to crack down on independent activists including women's rights activists who push hard precisely on issues like these and i think all of those are contributing to these problems getting worse rather than better ok so as you mentioned all of the anti gender discrimination laws in place seoul most of them at least but they're not being enforced how can you encourage the state to take a strong stand so what can be done to ensure that these laws are enforced right
10:22 pm
well the very first thing that the government needs to do is unfold its own laws and to leave its gender discriminatory job and i think there is a certain amount of public question back about these kinds of ads you know there has been something of a debate inside china about to look for example and greater gender equality i think of that if the companies really take down and don't reposed these kinds of ads it sets a little bit of competition between the government and those private companies you know there's also a lot of scope for making more precise and was what constitutes discrimination that's very vague and last but not least chinese courts could easily accept a lot of the cases related to discrimination that come before them but that they reject i think having real precedent and rejecting these kinds of ads would be helpful so if richardson china director of human rights watch thank you very much for talking to us on that. funny business but now it's back to christopher and an instant a celebrity is born. that's right
10:23 pm
britain's duchess of cambridge gave birth to a baby boy this morning kate's third child with her husband prince william earlier this evening mauna kea friends then go up the tree they think waiting for kate william ellen a new baby appearing outside so. long to bring six great grandchild is fifth in line to the throne also prince charles his father and his siblings george and show all that his name hasn't been released yet. the w.c. like forrest whiting with me in the studio for more and first of all the alex you know the name is not out yet so tell us about the speculation what names are in the running as it were well the bookies favorite is author and that is the middle name of prince charles and prince william and also the queen's own father so that's certainly top of the running but there are also other names including al but close as the queen victoria linked with al but there's frederic there's james and there's
10:24 pm
also possibly philip unfortunately we're going to have to wait a bit longer to find out what the actual name is but it's fun to sing some very strong candidates now everybody's asking how is mom doing while we still have there looking radiant amazing that she just given birth and that she was a pairing before the cameras for the public with baby in arms next to her husband prince william and after they had been on the steps of the hospital they were whisked off to kensington palace back home which is is good news for her but you have to remember that she's had three very difficult pregnancy she's had acute morning sickness with every single one of her children which i think is cool to a lot of discomfort and been quite a worry for all those doctors involved so i think the fact that she's back home is a very good sign and so that is putting on a very strong performance shall we say for the public what about the death of prince william the word is he is a very dedicated dad. appears to be the words that he said on the steps when he was
10:25 pm
out this afternoon with that baby was thrice the worry now because of that he's now got three children and i think he's very different from his predecessors certainly his grandfather and probably his father more perhaps like his mother diana princess of wales who obviously died in one thousand nine hundred seven and so he's trying to bring i think a different line to the royal family we know that he gave up his job as a helicopter pilot last year to spend more time on royal judy's which he's obviously taking very seriously as he will be the next in line after his father but also i think to spend more time with his family to show that he is a more than father ok what about the public mood in britain which of course has been a little bit overshadowed. by the the prospect of bragg's it is this going to allow people to to be a bit brighter people have been camping outside the hospital for days waiting for
10:26 pm
this baby to be born huge excitement in the u.k. you know this is what they needed let's face it they have had a tough time a tory time and it certainly will be some good news out there and that's what they've got so we've got that we've got next month this fairytale wedding where a prince harry is going to marry this american actress meghan mochel and honestly the excitement tell you that is culpable in the u.k. so i think it's just what they needed and of course this baby comes of arrived on a better day because today is george's day saint george being the painter in saint of england so i think if you want a really nice present for the u.k. was that if in england you go to it today very symbolic alex ford for us watching thank you very much for bringing us up to date on that. a quick reminder of our top stories now. has run over pedestrians in toronto canada with reports of several people. killed in the incident police have arrested the driver who is believed to
