a belgian called sentences the only surviving suspect in the twenty fifteen paris terror attacks just gets twenty years for his role in the police shootout that led to his arrest in brussels. hello and welcome my name's christopher spring eight thanks for joining us we begin with the latest from toronto canada where police are now saying that at least nine people are dead after a rental van plowed into a crowd sixteen people were injured the incident took place near one of toronto's major intersections young street and avenue in the northern part of the city police have arrested the van's driver and are all skin witnesses to come forward there were reports in local media that she fled the scene on foot.

while only eyewitness reports from the scene are coming in here's what a couple of people who saw the incident had to say. i just got our scan i saw here snow white just go to the. sidewalk and not so many people just shout stop the car but he didn't just keep moving and he did something home and that's three people who live down there and you know and all oh yes i was just leaving my building here at fifty four sixty young street i had just stepped out and lit a cigarette when i did that i turned up my head and i saw the van hit a man walking through the intersection it was a green light and he actually rolled into the road so at that point i ran into know the road i stopped all the cars and then just pandemonium broke loose just everyone was going crazy and i was pretty much all that i saw. i've been speaking to jeff harrington who is a reporter with canada's public broadcaster c.b.c. he gave us this update on the latest developments. what we're hearing from

witnesses and such a dramatic clip that we heard there was what you suz are saying that the man driving it that the curb and it's driving down the sidewalk fifty sixty seventy kilometers per hour just. everything in his way it was a scene at carnage and it has certainly christopher shaken people to their core here in toronto today as we still from the eyewitness reports and just do we have confirmation that this was a deliberate attack it suddenly looks as though it was a deliberate attack. so at this point christopher no confirmation from authorities that this was a deliberate attack but certainly we have heard from multiple eyewitnesses they are describing that seemingly quite intentionally again talk that curve and started driving down the sidewalk in their words this was no accident you know pop at the

curb and then start to accelerate at those speeds fifty sixty seventy kilometers per hour going down this sidewalk a video is also a merging of the address the suspected driver with police we have seen video where this suspect is holding what appears to be a gun right at police least defusing the situation moments after and i would suspect it's now being taken into custody but certainly christopher at this is going to take some time to get to the bottom of in terms of a motive what prompted this individual at this point to curio something and just have the police said anything about the identity of the suspect. no at this point we have no word on the suspects we're just all starting to string this together it happened a few hours ago and as you can imagine for support the scene has been one of chaos i'm coming to you from downtown toronto right now in the big city but this actually

elections have not been a hallmark very often after elections there have been protests and rallies on the streets and generally believe it leaders in those countries are from a lack of legitimacy this is one of the reasons why there is so much indignation it is the kurdish authorities ok not eg many thanks for that not exhibit he on in yet yvonne media. of course in belgium has sentenced a key suspect up to slum to twenty years in prison the twenty eight year old is the last surviving suspect from the twenty fifteen paris attacks which left one hundred thirty people dead he is currently being held in a french prison awaiting trial in connection with those attacks the ruling in belgium was for his part in the dramatic shootout with police that led to his arrest in brussels. at belgium's palace of justice up to slum received the maximum

twenty year jail sentence for his role in the police shootout just before his arrest in brussels two years ago and accomplice was handed the same sentence but neither of them were present for the verdict the lawyer representing the police praised the judge's decision. to as all of our demands have been met i think we can be satisfied that he is satisfied. but after slums lawyer said he still had some doubts. i'm not convinced of anything in this verdict but i review it with my client it's a verdict so i respect it but i think there are things that need to be said it remains to be seen if disallowing wishes to appeal and if you appeals them will decide the next steps. for today's verdict was just the first step in what could be years of proceedings against up to the twenty eight year old french citizen is believed to be the only surviving suspect in the paris terror attacks that left one hundred thirty people dead in

november twenty fifth dean after four months on the run up to slum was arrested in brussels in march twenty sixth seen following the shootout with belgian police for which he's been sentenced today i his role in planning and executing the paris attacks is not yet clear it's only at the much bigger trial set to take place in france at a later date that prosecutors will judge whether abt islam was one of the masterminds or just a low level follower. my colleague gary schultz has been following this case from its first day she sent us this update from outside the courthouse in brussels. this conviction and twenty year prison sentence for attempted terrorist murder won't have much of an impact on the song's life in the near term if ever because of course he's facing much more serious charges related to the paris attacks of november twenty fifth teen where one hundred twenty nine people were killed but what this trial has done is given us more insight into who is and what he believes

because he had an outburst here on the first day of the trial it was he said that he believes muslims are always discriminated against that he doesn't even recognize the mandate of the court and he said he put it he puts his faith in all his hands not the judges and so while the defense was trying to portray him as too stupid to have taken part in a complicated terror plots like the ones in paris and brussels he proved himself to be both articulate and angry so we'll see if that plays any role in his defense's strategy heading into the paris trial. is teri schultz there reporting from brussels now. cambridge gave birth to a baby boy this morning kate's third child with her husband prince william and earlier the seething fans caught the treat they so eagerly waiting for kate william and appearing outside some mary's hospital in central london the queen's sixth great grandchild is fifth in line to the throne that's off to prince charles
