this is news live from berlin a powerful dust storm kills more than ninety people in india extreme winds it smash walls and tear up trains across the country's north our correspondent is live with the latest from delhi also coming up on the world's press freedom day d.w. asks journalists what makes honest an accurate reporting so crucial we take the pulse of the media around the globe and example at the mexican border as a caravan of asylum seekers tried to enter the united states we'll learn why

transgender people in particular fear for their lives in central america. welcome to the program we begin in india where a powerful dust storm has left more than ninety people dead extreme winds and rains brought down trees and destroyed temporary structures throughout the northwest causing many of the deaths officials confirm that more than one hundred other people have been injured and warn that the death toll could rise. as the storm rolled in the dust and winds were only a portent of the violence to come. it wasn't until nightfall that the storm or viewed its full fury. battering residents with rain hail in
5:02 pm
unusually fast winds. the storm caught many by surprise as india's end will monsoon season is still weeks away. as the winds begin to subside victims were rushed to the hospitals in the states of rogers town and pradesh which bore the brunt of the storm's power. many were injured by falling debris as the winds uprooted trees and toppled buildings. in our district we have information of five deaths due to a high intensity thunderstorm at least twenty two people are critically injured and are being given treatment at a trauma center of the district hospital. it was only as daylight came that the extent of the damage began to become clear dozens have already been confirmed killed and authorities say the number of dead and injured is likely to rise as they continue their search in the region's more remote villages. and. following the story for us from delhi he has the very latest now so what more do we
5:03 pm
know about that relief effort that we just heard about and about the current situation. well the governments of both with their predation and raw just on those two states which got the brunt of the storm have both very been very quick to announce compensation that they're going to give to the families of the injured and the families of those who have lost their loved ones. so that was a very quick sort of reaction will remains to be seen sort of how how that will actually be given to those people. and then in terms of the current situation you know on the ground local authorities are definitely doing you know what they can you know to try and restore electricity to people's homes hundreds of electricity poles were felled in the storm so that's something they're working on but all of this could get complicated in the next twenty four to forty eight hours because india's media logical department is actually forecasting that we're going to get
5:04 pm
more weather like this more of this extreme weather dust storms and rain and so that could really complicate things quite a bit and why has this weather been so extreme because i mean dust storms in the past they're not all that regular why has this one in particular been so deadly and why are authorities so worried about the wants to come. yes certainly you know dust storms are not that foreign to this part of india you know there is just frankly a lot of dust in north india so when the winds pick up it's quite common that you know have this kind of intense weather but it's not usually as intense as this one was and some. some scientists some meteorologists are actually sort of referring this to as almost like a freak accident in a way because it's not usually this intense another sort of factor in why the death toll has been so high this time around is that a lot of a lot of this happened overnight so people were sleeping in their homes and not
5:05 pm
able to react as trees or electricity poles they have come down on their homes and so that's that's been also a big factor in why the death toll has been so much higher this time around ok and that's of course a question that will be asked after this whether the notification systems were in fact adequate to to get the people that know to understand where you are in delhi and has also been affected tell us a little bit more about that yes certainly last evening you know i was out i was in a in an auto rickshaw which is an open vehicle and i was sort of out in the middle of the storm you know a lot of dust flying around in my face and the skies were extremely gray that was soon followed by a lot of rain a lot of lightning and thunder for quite a few hours but you know it certainly wasn't anywhere as devastating here in delhi as it was in those states of with their prayers and rob just on that's where you've sort of seen the kind of destruction that has occurred and all of the deaths of
5:06 pm
taken place there. with the latest from delhi where we can confirm at this hour authorities rather are confirming at least ninety people dead that death toll expected to rise after this just. thanks for your reporting. let's get a quick check now some other stories that have been making news around the world and our many of the opposition leader nicole has called for a halt to the massive protests that have rocked the country for days in response the governing republican party says that it is willing to back him to become prime minister if the streets remain calm. one of us president donald trump's legal aides rudy giuliani says that the president has repaid one hundred thirty thousand dollars spent by his lawyer to buy a pornstar silence over an alleged affair with trump trump had previously insisted that he was unaware of the payment to stormy daniels but he has now confirmed what

he calls a reimbursement. and officials in the u.s. say that at least nine people were killed when a military cargo plane crashed near an airport in the southern state of georgia the c. one thirty aircraft was on a training mission carrying national guard members from puerto rico it's not yet known what caused the crash. reporters without borders say that hostility toward the press is growing worldwide often encouraged by political leaders even in democratic countries on this world press freedom day d w is taking a closer look in its latest report reporters without borders classify the situation in seventy out of one hundred eighty countries around the world as either very bad or bad these are the colored regions of our map you can see that there are quite a lot of them around the world china and iran remain among the world's worst countries for journalists and in china all media are subject to strict censorship
5:08 pm
and foreign journalists can be closely monitored it is estimated that at least fifteen journalists at around forty bloggers are currently in custody meantime let's go to iran as we mentioned media there are also strictly controlled by the state journalists can face harsh even violent reprisals if they step out of line of one hundred eighty countries around ranks one hundred sixty fourth on the press freedom list and then there is turkey while the state there doesn't completely control all media there are very few remaining independent outlets some thirty five journalists are reported jailed in turkey more than almost anywhere else in the world so given this situation we asked a handful of journalists from around the world globe to briefly explain what press freedom means to them. freedom of the press may seem like an abstract concept something very vague but doesn't really mean it means that you have the information to make up your mind and to speak out first we don't protect journalists like me
5:09 pm
that is true actually so much more than that because. if your freedom let me tell you why freedom of expression is one of your fundamental human rights written down in the united nations universal declaration of human rights it says everyone has the rights to freedom of opinion on this pressure this right includes freedom to all opinions without interference and to seek receive and impart information and ideas through any media undercard that's the frontiers. and let me tell you about my country in poland we have a limitation of press freedom that governments to control over states media and shout broadcast pure propaganda and to private media and political economical pressure by discover much in two thousand eighty within a month six hundred forty eight people reject tamed over social media posts
5:10 pm
criticizing government's policy and military operations in syria and they were not only journalists the constant harassment of nigeria is for green. is a means to civil society and it limits the ability of society to order government to account here in the united states the freedom of the press means that if you work for taxpayers chances are your work emails are public records. and that has enabled plenty of journalists to uncover areas of corruption in conflicts of interest that never would have otherwise been discovered here in kenya press freedom allows the citizens to make informed decisions especially during elections this march three indian journalists covering sound mining. were run over by a recall there were murdered and there were murdered because they were exposing their. illegal extraction of sand from which many people

profited and those people did not want the public to know that the public's money was being stolen i didn't want all of the most dangerous countries to work as journalist around the world. and i have witnessed how self-censorship and the lack of justice in our institutions have cost many grads and many of my colleagues three x. . one now we are heading to the united states where around a hundred central american migrants are camped at the u.s. border with mexico waiting to be allowed into the country to claim asylum few will be successful as the criteria for receiving permission to stay in the u.s. is strict but people from the transgender community may be in with a greater chance our correspondent claire richardson reports. for the hundreds got a mullins and salvadorians waiting at the u.s. border the odds don't look good the vast majority of us asylum claims from central
5:12 pm
americans are denied for the transgender people taking part in the caravan the future could be somewhat brighter but after a grueling journey this twenty seven year old is still not sure what it holds in store. i'm a little bit tired from the trip. it was a very long and we've been here waiting to see what happens to us. you think she's one of several transgender individuals spending time at this makeshift camp of mostly women and children. some twenty transgender people traveled with the caravan coming by foot by bus and by train all the way from near mexico's southern border they say they face violence and discrimination in their home countries and now they're waiting to ask for asylum in the united states they come from countries with some of the highest murder rates in the world where people are often killed or threatened by powerful gangs but it still wasn't an easy choice
5:13 pm
to leave home. what we need is to forget what they've done to us in one place and go somewhere else when i left my country it was very painful. by law the migrants are allowed to request asylum but to stay in the us they must show that they have suffered persecution because of characteristics like race religion or sexual orientation or that they have a credible fear. if they are not granting asylum for fleeing violence that's not enough of a reason but a well founded fear based on belonging to a particular group and in this case the community offers more possibilities of receiving asylum. that could give transgender people a leg up. but even the migrants who pass initial screenings face more hardship. their futures will unfold largely behind closed doors and often in long term detention centers as their cases are decided. let's get a quick check now some other stories that have been making news around the world
