investigation plus a powerful dust storm kills more than eight hundred people in india extreme winds smashed walls and tear up for you across the northwest. i'm sorry kelly welcome to the program thanks for joining us. today marks world's press freedom day and d.-w. is taking a closer look at the state of freedom around the world the international press watchdog reporters without borders says that hostility toward the press is on the rise worldwide often encouraged by political leaders even in democratic countries it classified the situation in seventy of the one hundred eighty countries around the world as either bad or very bad there are the colored regions of our map as you can see here china and iran remain among the world's worst countries for
6:02 pm
journalists in china in particular all media are subject to strict censorship there you can see the country in red and foreign journalists can closely be monitored it's estimated that at least fifteen journalists and around forty bloggers are currently in custody meantime iranian media are also strictly controlled by the state journalists can face harsh and even violent reprisals if they step out of line one hundred eighty countries are run out of those one hundred eighty countries around ranks one hundred and sixty fourth on the press freedom less and then there is turkey while the state there doesn't completely control all media there are very few remaining independent outlets some thirty five journalists are reported jailed in turkey more than almost anywhere else in the worlds we asked may handful of journalists from around the globe to explain what press freedom means to them and here's what they said. freedom of the press may seem like an abstract concept
6:03 pm
something very vague what this is really mean it means that you have the information to make up your mind and to speak out press freedom protect journalists like me. actually so much more than that because. if your freedom let me tell you why freedom of expression is one of your fundamental human rights written down in the united nations the universal declaration of human rights is since everyone has a right to freedom of opinion on this pressure this right includes freedom to all opinions without interference and to seek receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers. and let me tell you about my country in poland we have a limitation of press freedom governments to control over state media and shout broadcast pure propaganda and the private media and political mathematical pressure
6:04 pm
by discover them and in two thousand eight hundred within a month six hundred forty eight people ready tamed over social media posts criticizing governments policy and military operations in syria and they were not only journalists the constant harassment of nigerians analysis for doing their job is a means to civil society and it limits the ability of society to order government to account here in the united states the freedom of the press means that if you work for taxpayers chances are your work emails are public records. and that has enabled plenty of journalists to uncover areas of corruption in conflicts of interest that never would have otherwise been discovered here in kenya press freedom allows the citizens to make informed decisions especially during elections this march three indian journalists covering sound mining. were run over by

a recruit they were murdered and they were murdered because they were exposing the activity of illegal extraction of sand from which many people profited and those people did not want the public to know that the public's money was being stolen i mean one of the most dangerous countries to work as a journalist around the world. and i have witnessed how self-censorship and the lack of justice in our institutions have cost many grads and many of my colleagues. so a challenging environment for many journalists as we see there today g.w. is recognizing a man who has chosen to speak out and challenge those in power risking his freedom to do so so they got feedback a lot is the winner of this year's g w freedom of speech award he criticized the iranian government over protests there last year. at the
6:06 pm
end of december twenty seventeen iran's though its biggest anti-government demonstrations in almost a decade the protests quickly spread to dozens of cities and towns across the country. just days after the unrest a rep did so dexie back alam gave an interview to d.w. far as the he characterized the demonstrators as young people disappointed with the entire political system. and said more than two thirds of people are dissatisfied with the islamic republic those views didn't go down well with the arraign ian or thorazine they accuse the back alarm of spreading false information and propaganda against the islamic republic. he was sentenced to eighteen months in prison and barred from social media for two years she is appealing the decision.
6:07 pm
what should be punished someone has expressed an opinion what she's not contactable which is starting line which is not in all of the answers because it got well meant open ian chillag quanties should i go eighteen months into prison. it's not the first time the academic has received a jail sentence for speaking his mind. he's become a well known figure in iran for challenging the government narrative on many sensitive issues from the country's nuclear program to foreign policy and he has a large audience online on telegram which was banned by the iranian authorities this week he has almost one hundred pals and followers. on instagram almost seven hundred pages and. see back alam has vowed to keep on expressing his opinions despite the official threats against him. i hope for iran is
6:08 pm
genuine i really i sincerely. am not a daydream it is just thinking because i believe that they want to see what will eventually prevail in iran. well now let's get a quick check of some other stories that have been making news around the world the international red cross has called for the immediate release of a german nurse abducted by armed men from its compound in somalia the group says that it was in contact with various engine seas in the somali capital mogadishu to try and secure the woman's freedom i think china's top diplomat has met his counterpart in north korea on the first trip to pyongyang by a chinese foreign minister and more than ten years it comes as diplomatic efforts to bring lasting peace to the korean peninsula gather pace he also met with the north korean leader kim jong un who said that he was committed to eliminating his country's nuclear arsenal. and officials in the u.s.
6:09 pm
say that at least nine people were killed when a military cargo plane crashed near an airport in the southern state of georgia the c. one thirty aircraft was on a training mission carrying national guard members from puerto rico it's not yet known what caused the crash. a pornstar of president and his new lawyer the have been more twists in the stormy daniels scandal surrounding the u.s. president before we bring you the latest let's take a look at what we know so far porn actress stephanie clifford stage name stormy daniels alleges that she had sex with donald trump back in two thousand and six a year after he married his wife millennium in twenty sixteen daniels was paid one hundred thirty thousand dollars by trump's lawyer mark colon cohen she says it was hush money to keep her quiet about the alleged sexual encounter the payment was made just days before the twenty sixteen presidential election and it raised questions of campaign financing violations trump has denied ever having sex with
6:10 pm
daniels he also previously denied knowledge of the payment to her. but trump's new lawyer woody giuliani said that the us president did it repay his personal attorney the one hundred thirty thousand dollars that the lawyer used to silence stormy daniels something the president has now confirmed in fact via twitter this directly contradicts trump's earlier statements about the allegations concerning a payment during a appearance on fox news channel's hannity the former new york city mayor said that the money paid to daniels had been funneled through trump's personal attorney is law firm and that it did not come from election campaign funds homeless having something to do with paying some stormy daniels woman hundred thirty thousand i mean which is going to turn out to be perfectly legal. that money was not campaign money sorry i'm giving you a fact now that you don't know it's not campaign money no campaign finance
6:11 pm
violation so they funneled through a law firm from move through over the president repeated so let's get more on this trying to help us make sense of it we have carson fundament standing by with the very latest from washington so carsten i mean just as this is just the latest twist here what are we to believe because donald trump has now tweeted his response and it's different from what he was saying before walk us through it. yeah absolutely donald trump the president this morning treated its quite a long statement over three tweets and in this he did acknowledged in a very formal language looks like his usual tweets or probably his lawyers looked at that but he tweeted and acknowledged that he in fact did repay his personal lawyer his longtime personal lawyer michael cohen for dealing where the storm of
6:12 pm
the affair that. would be giuliani as we've just seen came all it's to present this new version of the story so this seems to be a concerted efforts by trump and his new york to clean up this mess because really no one here in washington ever believed that michael cohen just made these payments to silence stormy daniels and her allegations about an affair just out of the kindness of his heart without expecting to be reimbursed by the president and let's not forget the offices and the private. apartments of mr cohen had been raided by the f.b.i. so maybe mr giuliani and mr trump expected this to come out anyway so they wanted to get their version of the story out first mr trump also once again in those tweets. actually geishas by.
6:13 pm
actress were not true so but of course remains why was the money paid and they said well this was of course because of the complaint going on but it was not campaign money so let's drill down then a little bit deeper into this newest version that we're hearing because you know as you mentioned trump saying that the payment was made to a retainer not from the campaign however he initially denied all knowledge of the payment now giuliani says that he did know about it what are we to make of it karsten. well bottom line is the president clearly didn't say the truth when i asked about this just a few weeks ago while traveling on air force one a spy reports of whether he knew anything about the payments the president said flat out no and even though giuliani is known trying to say well the president didn't know all the details and was no direct reimbursement but this was done
6:14 pm
through a month through the retainer it's not what the president said. given that what are the moral implications here because i mean this must be very confusing for the american public i know it's confusing for a lot of our international viewers do americans even care that truck might have lived here. some do but not everyone yes. he did list newspaper here took the efforts to document all untrue folds statements of the president since he took office and according to the account donald trump says things that are not true or misleading on average five times a day that's quite a lot even when you expect a politician to be a bit economical with the truth every now and then but the bottom line is that many of his supporters don't care his approval ratings are quite stable they're even
6:15 pm
better than the a few months ago so of course and then what what are we to make of it because i mean given those contradictory messages coming from trump and his legal team is this just a strategy of chaos or could it be a sign that his legal team either doesn't have it all together or that they might be panicking because there is of course this special counsel investigation going on . i don't think they have panicking but definitely we see a change of strategy here at least of tactics because a few of trump's top lawyers two of his trial lawyers have left or are in the process of leaving new lawyers are coming on like rudy giuliani and clearly they have decided that they want to go more aggressively against those scandals surrounding the white house including the alleged affair where the story down the other alleged sexual encounters the president supposedly had before he became
6:16 pm
president and also with regard to the investigation of the special counsel into a possible collusion with russia and obstruction of justice if this new strategy will do them any good especially when they do it that way going on t.v. shows and saying things that of course are immediately decided by the media again robot mode of will be looking at that really looking at contradictions i'm not quite sure if in the end that will really be helpful but that seems to be their strategy no go out and fight those allegations go on the offense carsten phenomenon with the latest from washington thanks so much. well now a powerful dust storm has left more than one hundred people dead in india extreme winds and rains brought down trees and destroyed temporary structures throughout the northwest causing many of those deaths officials confirm that more than one hundred other people have been injured and warn that the death toll could rise
6:17 pm
as the storm rolled in the dust and winds were only important of the violence to come. it wasn't until nightfall that the storm revealed its full fury. battering residents with rain hail and unusually fast winds the storm caught many by surprise as indies and will months one season is still weeks away. as the winds begin to subside victims were rushed to the hospitals in the states of rogers town and without pradesh which bore the brunt of the storm's power. many were injured by falling debris as the winds uprooted trees and toppled buildings. in our district we have information of five deaths due to a high intensity thunderstorm at least twenty two people are critically injured and are being given treatment at
6:18 pm
a trauma center of the district hospital. it was only as daylight came that the extent of the damage began to become clear dozens have already been confirmed killed and authorities say the number of dead and injured is likely to rise as they continue their search in the region's more remote villages. thousand now changing a gear at volkswagen after the emissions scandal by villain has the story the new v.w. boss have a disused his first general assembly to call for a more honest open truthful and ethical company culture insiders more often use the words fear and respect to describe the work at ford's under hierarchies the german comic is still trying to convince the world that it's changing after the emissions cheating scandal. greenpeace activists protest outside v.w. the annual general meeting they're calling for climate friendly vehicles clean up reach this banner and they need the corporate culture as well inside as ever high

huge influence of the workers' council he's up of against quite some opposition and instigated a new whistleblower program or put some more force behind it integration for and taken integrity and the question is he will at some point have to produce results to show people that he really has some bite whether he can really do that in that environment they question mark it's a really tough job exactly it's amazing though that a company has to instate a whistle blowing program now before i let you go willy i want to ask you about this next conference call the back big time while electric cars make a tesla continues to burn through more cash than it's earning c.e.o. we don't musk has done little to ease investors fears instead during the cold with shareholders hebrew fused to answer analysts questions calling them so dry and so not cool test the share price plunged the company losing over two billion dollars

kind of behavior is symptomatic of someone who is losing touch with reality and who did a very unprofessional job because in that second he wants to not only go to the movie was to go to mom's doesn't end. well that's another story. we won't go there i did not go there ali. thank you very much to leave us there for as of right finally compensation for thousands of south africa miners who contract that lung disease the settlement is the result of years of campaigning as worth around four hundred million dollars it covers workers from several big mining companies employ between one thousand nine hundred sixty five and today many go to bucket loads of stuff to an ailing silica dust while drilling the families of those who died will be compensated as part of the deal. and back to zero with a prickly immigration case here in germany and it's here in germany as you

mentioned police in fact in the south of the country have raided an asylum seekers hostile to detain a man for deportation authorities want to return him to italy the first european country that he entered and the one in which he should have applied for asylum fellow refugees meantime prevented a previous attempt to detain the man so the police came back and force the operation as highlighted germany's struggles with the high numbers of recent arrivals. the town of elbowing in at dawn never before have there been scenes like these at a refugee center in germany hundreds of police national forces were on hand to arrest a twenty three year old man from togo and attempt to pick him up on monday was met with violent resistance infuriating the german interior minister. what happened there was a slap in the face of law abiding people started before it's
6:25 pm
a slap in the face of law abiding people because our hospitality must not be abused . and monday's attempt to arrest the man failed due to massive resistance by asylum seekers the officer in charge described how the situation escalated. your colleague and four officers in two patrol cars were supposed to take a twenty three year old togolese back to italy in the early hours of the morning or europe or they were supposed to pick him up here. but they were severely impeded violently prevented from doing so by about one hundred fifty to two hundred african refugees who live here in l.v. and in the valley borne often the total is men has now been arrested and other refugees have been led away in handcuffs a few asylum seekers were injured after jumping out of a window charges have been made against twelve people for trespassing drug offenses
6:26 pm
and then after. the authorities say they'll take a tougher approach in the future. developing up she women for it will carry out deportations and do what is necessary to achieve this we will not allow illegal vacuums to arise as has emerged here we will work against this sort of behavior in the strongest way we can all biden or with. a firm approach like that has the support of most german politicians. the new era of diplomacy between north and south korea has been on show at the world table tennis championships in sweden the north and south korean women's teams were just about to face off in the quarter final when they informed officials that they did not want to compete against each other instead they decided to form a united korea team so that the players from both sides would advance to the semifinals pretty good idea if you ask me well now quick reminder of the top story
6:27 pm
