a statement out from the folks saying that they will continue to cooperate with us regulators right now against them thinking of me for sounding a little bit cynical but was this really any kind of surprise. in one respect yes and to the other no in my twenty year career on wall street i do not really recall that such a high ranking former or current c.e.o. of a company of this size of folks bargain has been charged with any similar charges in that respect it is a surprise on the other side that's what u.s. prosecutors usually do they start with the lowering margin winter call is already the ninth executive. to be charged two executives have been sentenced to prison terms just end of last year and probably they have helped to build the case

diesel to martinique and that's a view most small investors seem to share the newly appointed v.w. boss starts his job with a boast of confidence. now we all know conference calls can sometimes be a little bit awkward but what about when they go disastrously wrong currently electric car maker tesla is continuing to burn three more cash than its earning and c.e.o. . don't musk has done little to ease investors fees instead during the call with shareholders he refused to answer questions courting them so dry and so not cool tesla's share price while it plunged the company losing over two billion dollars in market capitalization it just one phone call if so shouldn't put a dent in sales too much that all over four hundred fifty thousand people on waiting lists for a tesla. added us is sticking to an advertising deal with county west despite pressure to cut ties the american rapper sparked outrage of this week describing

slavery as a choice thousands signed an online petition for the german sports web brand to end its three year old partnership with him but chief executive kasper host that says waddy death doesn't support west's comments it remains very committed to the collaboration the affair helps and shares south by almost seven percent despite profits bounded forward in the first quarter. now justice for miners in south africa at long last thousands of south african mine is being compensated for lung disease the settlement is the result of years of campaigning and is worth around four hundred million dollars six covers workers from several big mining companies employ between nine hundred sixty five and today many of them contract to tuberculosis after inhaling silica dust while drilling for gold and other metals the families of those who died will receive compensation as part of

the settlement. and with me now in the studio is stephan murray who is normally in johannesburg he's going to be back there very shortly thank you for stopping off to come and speak to us here in berlin now we're talking about the largest class action settlement in south africa historic day sadly some of the claimants are no longer alive tell us about the conditions that they were working in. i think you know especially in the south african case you have to realize that silicosis is not just a normal epidemic it's a racist demick because it used to be the case of black mineworkers were intentionally more exposed to the dust that basically causes you know the epidemic of civic causes where as why to mine workers would be rather put into a oversee function and this happened over the kates and obviously. you have to acknowledge that if you speak about the conditions the mine workers you know used to use to work and absolutely shocking case of racial discrimination that as well

could we end up seeing more class action suits now thousands of people currently being compensated but of course we're talking about a big industry. you know in fact i talked today with some of the community leaders of the mine communities who are basically also involved in lawsuits against the big business and they told me you know it is a big victory for us it is a big victory for the communities and it's a big victory for the mine workers but you know now we have to see you know what is going to happen with widows what's going to happen with the families of what's going to happen really with the mine workers so and as i understand it is not yet completely clear so the future will show this and i believe that this is going to be you know the stepping stone of further actions to happen and that's a very important point that you make because we've had intense you know media spotlight on this case for the past couple of years the campaigning has been going
7:11 am
on as i understand for the past six years has anything ready started to change within the industry or people still working in what all paris conditions. what you also have to see is that the mining industry in south africa is in a big crisis at the moment hundreds of thousands of jobs on the line and many were already fired and this obviously has a big impact on the communities you know surrounding the mines basically living from the mines and living from the salaries the mine workers bring home the conditions in these. communities did not improve the conditions are still dire and really really harsh there may have been improvements you know in terms of. you know safety regulations health regulations but the general conditions of the people living there i don't really think it improved we will keep an eye on what happens of course
