10:00 pm
this. from berlin a campaign promise kept a move that europe trying to prevent as president pulls the united states out of the iran nuclear deal in just a short period of time the world's leading state sponsor of terror will be on the cusp of acquiring the world's most dangerous weapon. therefore i am announcing today that the united states will withdraw from the iran nuclear deal also reinstated economic sanctions against iran with
10:01 pm
a veiled warning that there will be consequences for countries doing business with tehran meanwhile european countries say that they are committed to keeping the deal going despite the u.s. withdrawal israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu has welcomed trump's move he calls it a bold decision we'll have reaction and analysis of this historic withdrawal and what it means for the world starts right now. it's good to have you with us tonight a game changer in the middle east and perhaps beyond us president has pulled the u.s. out of the iran's nuclear deal trump signed a presidential memorandum reinstating sanctions against iran after calling the agreement quote a horror. one sign
10:02 pm
a deal that didn't bring peace and never will in an address before signing that document trump called iran the leading state sponsor of terror trump had previously resisted lobbying from the seven other signatories to the deal insisting that it had to be changed to keep the u.s. on board let's listen in to part of what the u.s. president had to say just a few hours ago at the heart of the iran deal was a giant fiction that a murder's regime desired only a peaceful nuclear energy program today we have definitive proof that this arabian promise was a lie all right we have team coverage of this story tonight we want to go first suit claire richardson she is in washington but richard is in brussels force good evening to both of you claire i'll ask you what was the biggest takeaway from this announcement today. hi brant there's a lot to unpack in what was
10:03 pm
a truly perhaps the most monumental foreign policy decision that we've seen in general drums presidency to date he repeated a lot of his critiques of the iran nuclear agreement which he has always maintained was a very bad one sided deal he thinks it was poorly negotiated which of course took place in two thousand and fifteen under the obama administration and he points to says some specific issues that he had been seeking to try and address and had threatened to remove the united states from the a court if they were not things that like essentially he thinks that the agreement overall is too weak he was concerned in particular about things like sunset clauses that would allow iran to resume some of its nuclear activities after a certain amount of time worrying that it did not sufficiently address iran's role in stoking sectarian violence in the region in countries like syria and yemen and did not seriously address iran's ballistic missile program so we've heard all this before he reiterated these today he said look i keep my promise as i've withdrawn
10:04 pm
the united states from this terrible deal that does not address these issues however this is a devastating blow for the united states european allies who really believe that the iran nuclear deal is the best way to stop iran from getting a nuclear bomb. and it was also in many ways expected we've got a new secretary of state mike pompei oh and also a new national security advisor john bolton who have always been iran hawks and the fact that we have these hardliners whispering into president donald trump's year now suggested to many that this was something that was going to take place sooner rather than later or at least have a listen to more of what the u.s. president said today. the iran deal is defective at its core if we do nothing we know exactly what will happen in just a short period of time the world's leading state sponsor of terror will be on the cusp of acquiring the world's most dangerous weapons therefore
10:05 pm
i am announcing today that the united states will withdraw from the iran nuclear deal so clear what happens next are we looking at old and new sanctions to be introduced well it's of course quite a complicated process what we've seen announced now is that the treasury is going to start implementing a ninety and a one hundred eighty day window of the essentially wind down periods as part of reinstating these sanctions and this is expected that this could be a possibility of the way things that go that they would not be implemented immediately but rather have this period in which trump perhaps hopes that iran may have a change of heart and actually come to the negotiating table however it is it of course has said many times that it will not renegotiate the deal and it burned record let's talk about the european position on all of this but we know that
10:06 pm
europe says it wants to stick with the deal and now we've had reaction from the iranian president mr rouhani and i just want to read part of a quote from him that cish something that he said after trying to males but he said if we achieve the deal's goals in cooperation with other members of the deal it will remain in place by exiting the deal america has officially undermined its commitment to an international treaty now that is a turnaround in the position of iran surprising words but do we know how would a deal work with european partners in it but without the u.s. . if the commitment by the iran stands as it was issued tonight then it would be iran and the e.u. against the u.s. the assessment of the nature of the deal is completely different on this side of the atlantic the europeans say this deal is essential for security in the region
10:07 pm
for europe and the rest of the world and they also say this is working it is preventing iran from acquiring atomic or nuclear weapons and therefore it must be kept. is it possible to do it without the. united states it's very difficult to say because if the actions are plays the pressure on iran would be very large and the e.u. would have find to to circumvent somehow these sanctions for its own companies because trump is also threatening european companies to have them this secondary sanctions so the e.u. . high representative motoring he said today we will prevent our own interest and we will protect our companies so it's also here the e.u. against the u.s. you know the e.u. against the u.s. we also know that the new u.s. ambassador to germany each we did just moments after the trump announcement that
10:08 pm
german companies that are doing business in iran should begin winding down their activities they are so clear if indeed iran does stay in the deal and we have this maybe us pitted against europe it's going to mean that trump is more isolated then ever has the u.s. tonight as a result of all of this a weaker hand when it comes to north korea. sure well certainly it would strengthen iran's hand in terms of asking for further concessions if it decides to stay in the deal with the european powers and china and russia that had signed on to the accord you mention north korea and this is also very much a salient point looking forward we heard surprisingly in a speech him say that might pompei of his secretary of state was on his way to pyongyang to negotiate some of the terms of what could be an history and historic upcoming meeting between trump and to the north korean leader kim jong un he said
10:09 pm
he's going there to hash out some of the details of when this historic summit could take place and be the first time a sitting u.s. president has a net with a north korean leader but now of course the main reason that trump is says that he is going to speak with the north korean leader is about the process of achieving denuclearization for north korea and the rest of the world is looking very closely at how the trump administration treated this iran nuclear deal and to see whether it in some ways it was a faithful actor to the agreement that it signed back in two thousand and fifteen it will be interesting to see how this is going to affect those negotiations whether north korea will look to today's announcement as evidence that the united states is not good for its word when it signs international accords that's a good point because we remember the clinton administration there was a deal signed with the north koreans the bush administration gone the north koreans
10:10 pm
of course have not forgotten. we're getting reaction from the european union to this announcement from truong let's take a listen now to further rica marie. in the union will remain committed to the continuance and effective implementation of the new york bureau. we fully trust the work the competence and the autonomy of the international atomic energy agency that has published reports certify that iran has fully complied with its commitments the lifting of nuclear related sanctions is an essential part of the agreement the european union has repeatedly stressed that the lifting of nuclear related sanctions has a positive impact trades and economic relations with iran but also mainly crucial benefits for the iranian people the european union is fully committed to ensuring that this continuous to be delivered on and we know that the u.s.
10:11 pm
president does not agree with that he says that the money that was freed up through this deal did not go to the good of the iranian people and he says that businesses in europe in particular that are doing business with iran are helping aid terror now he has said that he wants all businesses out of iran and there was this veiled threat today made by the u.s. president that there will be consequences for countries that do not stop doing business and a lot of commentators say that that was addressed to europe are we looking at a situation tonight with the u.s. threatening some type of sanctions against its european allies over iran. well some european diplomats in brussels say this is the only way you can read it because these sanctions imposed unilaterally without the european union involved in this is different to the situation we had before that you're around you when the
10:12 pm
europeans and the us together at these sanctions and plays and now these sanctions also directed when they are imposed in one hundred eighty days against european companies doing business these are the so-called secondary effects of these sanctions and this is a real threat to the economic interests of these companies and as i said today we can mobile really has vowed that she will protect this interest and there are some some ways you can circumvent that too you can build some work arounds to these sanctions and maybe protect the interests but of course that this will harm your anian interests as well because many german companies and banks for example would not be reluctant to go into iran and do business there and so this is a real conflict of interests here but still paris london and berlin have to clear tonight that they will stick to the deal and continue the work with iran because
10:13 pm
nobody knows what donald trump is up to how he will have the leverage to force iran to go back to the negotiation table table into to prevent them better than that now not to build nuclear weapons or at a correspondent parent record in brussels and player richardson in washington to both of you thank you. israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu we know is an outspoken opponent of the iran nuclear deal he has been one he was one of the first world leaders to react to trump's announcement tonight let's listen in to what he had to say israel fully supports president trump's bold decision today to reject the disastrous nuclear deal with the terrorist regime in tehran. israel is opposed the nuclear deal from the start because we said that rather than blocking iran's path to a bomb the deal actually paves the ron's path to an entire arsenal of nuclear bombs
10:14 pm
and this within a few years time the removal of sanctions under the deal has already produced disastrous results the deal didn't push war further away it actually brought it closer to the deal didn't reduce iran's aggression it dramatically increased it are there was benjamin netanyahu there it increased the aggression that seems to be what israelis are preparing for tonight we want to go now to our correspondent in jerusalem tanya kramer she's on the story for us good evening to you tanya you know we've got reports now that israel is on high alert the military saying that forces have ordered bomb shelters to be opened in the golan heights after spotting irregular activity what they say here of iranian forces in syria what more do we know. well this statement from the army just came shortly before this speech by mr trump understand that the israeli army has given instructions to open public bomb shelters in the israeli controlled part of the golan heights and according to
10:15 pm
that statement they have identified as you said and usually the movement by iranian forces in syria they say additional defense systems have been deployed and also we understand now that some limited numbers of the boats reserve have been called up now this comes after or within the past couple of days the media was speculating and there where some a lot of concern here that an attack might be in the end in the coming days the israeli army is on high alert already for the past couple of weeks actually because it believes that iran wants to retaliate for and that israeli strike in april on and syrian air base where which killed several reigning military advisors and iran has blamed israel for that and let me just ask you your
10:16 pm
they are do you cover this powder keg every day is there the feeling of israel tonight that this move by donald trump that has brought israel closer to a military conflict with iran. well certainly the tensions have been steadily growing house been also there have been more what has been called some military confrontations even the beginning of the year. some months ago the house been alleged rein in joan that and israeli air space then retaliate it was shot down so from then on you see more and more alleged israeli air strikes is whenever confirms what it does syrian soil. also understand tonight to have been reports actually just coming in from explosions near damascus they are all unconfirmed we don't know yet what's behind
10:17 pm
it though there is a sense that you know the tensions are growing it's just not clear you know what it will tell you could actually look like our correspondent tanya kramer on the story for us in jerusalem tonight tania thank you card hell it is here now we're talking about the economic impact of this decision or one of things happening in the last couple of hours the new u.s. ambassador to germany tweeting that german businesses should wind down their activities in iran there's also this veiled threat to you that the u.s. could maybe threaten sanctions against europe if you continue to do business with iran absolutely it was a veiled threat that not just sanctions against iran but anybody that helps to iran with building nuclear weapon and that veiled threat being for example anybody still party to that agreement which is the european union so many concerns over the future stability of the iranian economy now naturally following president trump
10:18 pm
announcement about with touring the u.s. from the need a deal and to impose the highest level of a u.s. sanctions against the iranian capital and the government that. and adding that those sanctions sanctions as we just mentioned will extend to any country that helps iran with what he calls iran's ambition to produce nuclear weapons well ahead of trump's announcement the european union said it was concerned that tougher sanctions could well push roams a clone of me to the brink of collapse. the streets of tehran are in a sorry state the government only repairs the very worst sections of road and to do that they need machinery from abroad including cranes excavators and bulldozers when sanctions against iran were eased in twenty fifteen many western companies seize the opportunity to do business including many german companies back in the nineteen seventies iran was germany's second most important export market outside
10:19 pm
europe after the usa. last year iranian firms delivered goods worth four hundred million euros to germany above all oil according to the german chamber of industry and commerce germany for its part exported three billion euros worth of goods to iran. the easing of sanctions brought more than just machinery to iran they were also food products and other goods that created jobs to a total of six hundred thousand per year since two thousand and fifteen. but there isn't anywhere near enough a total of half of all females under thirty with high school diplomas and a third of all males in the same demographic are unemployed a return to economic sanctions against iran will only make the situation worse european countries don't want to risk contravening u.s. sanctions when they resumed in the coming months but the european union which
10:20 pm
supports the iran nuclear deal has already made it clear it would take measures to protect its companies doing business when the sanctions are re-imposed. let's bring in our financial correspondent. now jens good to see you bring us up to date with the reaction on wall street to this announcement. yeah investors really haven't made up their mind yet what to make out of the announcement that we've gotten actually even after us president donald trump a spoke there were even if you would cheers here on the floor of the new york stock exchange as some investors believe or share donald trump's opinion that the deal has not necessarily been in favor of the u.s. so that was just a few traders but just to give you an idea how are the your reaction was here in new york and then the big question is will the whole situation escalate that could very well happen but it could also not have been and then interpretation the market
10:21 pm
at some point was down by a good one hundred fifty points and then towards the end the dow jones industrial average even closed a tiny bit higher and what about your interpretations and how could this affect u.s. companies. well certainly it could effect the defense stocks the defense companies here in the united states and we saw stock prices for example from companies like northrop grumman from lockheed martin trading higher it could affect a company like boeing they have a pending contract for about one hundred ten airplanes in a total value of a good four billion dollars so that deal certainly could be in jeopardy and then also we have to see what happens on the energy market oil prices fell here in the tuesday session but i guess that was because most people actually anticipated that donald trump board pull out and we saw already saw oil prices gaining quite a bit in the past couple of days so my feeling is that we have probably need to
10:22 pm
sleep one night over those events and then also wait for the global reactions and then we might have a better idea in the wednesday session while we can see want to and then of course european investors will be waking up as well and is that the feeling that european companies could be more effective potentially and merican ones yes there is this feeling besides of boarding they're not really that many big u.s. players are doing an awful lot of business with iran they're also no imports oil imports from iran to the u.s. if you look at some infrastructure companies energy companies even financial institutions in europe they have closer ties to iran than the u.s. has saw there is a certain feeling here that a european companies could be affected much more than u.s. businesses. for us on a wall street's monitoring that full out thank you very much indeed. and it's back
10:23 pm
