assurances that it can't be saved. until gallo welcome to the program north korea has released a three american prisoners in the run up to the historic summit with the united states the prisoners left the country immediately accompanied by u.s. secretary of state mike pompei one landed in japan a short time later on their way home the trio includes a missionary and two men who were arrested while teaching at a foreign funded film young university of science and technology all three were accused of taking part in the state's activities us president donald trump described the news as very exciting. to washington that i am d.w. our correspondent claridge's welcome claire how is news of these free detainees been received. i feel this is definitely being seen as a positive development and it's also

a sign any kind of sign of warming relationship is but a warming relationship excuse me between north korea and the united states is going to be seen as something of a victory for u.s. president donald trump and he credits his strong pressure tactics for having brought north korea to the negotiating table breaking decades of stalemate where positive ministrations have failed and this is really a remarkable turn if you look at where we were just a few months ago where trump was exchanging insults and threats with the north korean leader kim jong un over twitter but that said this hostage release situation is not in itself something new we've seen it in past administrations and generally north korea let's american hostages go once a high ranking official from the united states visits in person to bail them out and so what else do we know about these three. well we know that they seem to be in reasonable health of that they were able to walk unassisted to get onto the plane at that they are all korean americans who have spent between one and two

years arrested for and state activities now they've also spent time in brutal labor camps and are currently on their way back to the united states with the new secretary of state mike pompei oh. what other reason the pump. well it's interesting this was a surprise visit by pompeo that we found out about yesterday as donald trump was announcing his decision to pull the united states out of the two thousand and fifteen iranian nuclear deal is not the first time we've seen a pump aoe in north korea he was in fact there even when he was the cia director in early april also in negotiating with with officials there ahead of a possible historic summit between president trump and the north korean leader kim jong un now he says he was there to set up a date and time for this meeting that could potentially take place between the two leaders it would be the first time that a sitting u.s. president has met with a north korean leader and we have found trump has just announced that details have

been decided in terms of the location at least and that they will be announced in the next three days we don't know for sure where that will be other than that they said it will not be in the demilitarized zone. so the region between trump and kim jong will be about some sort of nuclear deal with wonders whether america's a part of. withdrawing from the iran nuclear deal might cast any sort of shadow over these tools. well that's certainly a concern is whether the united states can be seen as a fair and legitimate negotiator after we saw a trump announce that the united states would pull out of a multilateral agreement that by all accounts everybody else seemed to be holding up their end of the deal on so that could send the wrong message to north korea who was certainly watching this announcement on the iran nuclear deal but trump would say the opposite he would say this is a show of strength that he's not going to walk away from any negotiations without

getting a deal that he feels is comprehensive plan which is so they washington thank you. european countries meanwhile reasserting their commitment to the iran nuclear deal following the decision to withdraw the united states short time ago president trump defended the move but added that he still open to negotiating a new do he also that not to restart its nuclear weapons program. decision has sparked anger and concern amongst iran's leaders and its people. outrage in tehran and parliament iranian politicians wasted no time condemning the u.s. for violating a deal signed only three years ago. on the streets iranians read the news that their economy is once again to face u.s. sanctions. and. this means more pressure will be exerted on the

people of iran and the country will go back to the days of resorting to smuggling goods into the country and bypassing sanctions. as an iranian citizen i expect our president to withdraw from the nuclear deal just like the american president who pulled out of it. on tuesday u.s. president donald trump signed a memorandum to reinstate harsh economic sanctions on iran most notably in the oil and energy sectors. all efforts by european allies to dissuade him had been in vain the european union's foreign policy chief federica mugger rini couldn't hide her regret as she urged unity. the european union will remain committed to the continued full and effective implementation of the nuclear. we fully trust the war the competence and the autonomy of the international atomic energy agency that has

published reports certify that iran has fully complied with its commitments. even if europe remains firm many fear that trump's move will prompt a backlash in iran president hassan rouhani said his country might resume nuclear activities if a deal without the u.s. will not guarantee its interests. tonight we've witnessed an important historical experience. do you have what we've been saying and repeating for the past forty years has now happened once more iran is a country that is low to its commitments and the united states is a country that has never stuck to its commitments. without u.s. backing the e.u. russia and china must prove that the deal is still worth while for iran much will depend on the next few weeks as european leaders urge iran to remain optimistic.

straight to iran's capital to find correspondent erica randolph welcome erick what does iran need to hear from the other signatories to convince say that this deal is worth sticking with. well that's going to need some sort of guarantees that the trade investment that has come into the country is going to be protected in some way some sort of mechanism that can allow that to be shielded from from u.s. sanctions but frankly it's very hard to see how that could happen european trade in particular has already been squeezed down to a bad trickle in recent months just by the threats of sanctions from america when they're actually in place it's hard to see how businesses will take the risk of us massive u.s. penalties just for the limited business that. night what we heard from iran's president in the report let's hear from the supreme leader ayatollah ali khamenei.
7:09 pm
should he do as you heard last night that the president of american made some silly and superficial comments that they included maybe more than ten lies. he spoke about withdrawing from the nuclear deal and threatened the people of iran and the regime saying i'll do this and then let you know that is mr trump i tell you on behalf of the iranian people you have made a mistake. mileti you're on. every ground off despite the rhetoric iran at this stage does still seem committed to talking. yeah absolutely i think president rouhani in particular has staked so much of his political legacy on this deal and the idea of opening the country up to a free market near the group foreign investment system he definitely wants to pull something back from this to work with the europeans and the russians and the chinese to try and start over something promenade who actually at the beginning

despite mistrust for america didn't support the deal didn't say could even be the basis of the negotiations as long ago given up any hope. of maryland's could be could be someone they could work with so if obviously the president from one side iran to come back to the table for a new deal it looks on the face of it like best best zero chance of that. yeah it doesn't hurt me in the short term that that's almost impossible rowhani was in a very difficult political position already he put so much effort into convincing the conservative faction to be in negotiations with the west and with america in particular was something worthwhile. conservatives who always told him should trust the americans feel very vindicated today and that's really that's really hit hard his chances of pushing that line and it will be

a long time before they trust the americans again so how would new american sanctions affect iranian daily life. well i'll give you an example i had a friend of mine crying this morning she runs a small factory that makes a mobility equipment for hospitals and disabled people she'd managed to secure. an investor from sweden it's a small outfit a small business but an important one she's now has no idea what the future holds for business until there are plenty of other stories like that a lot of iranians were talking to on the streets some worried about the consequences that they're saying they may need to leave iran we've already seen billions of dollars fleeing iran and the currency in a downward spiral in recent weeks so it doesn't look good on the economic front a lot of other iranians very defiant saying we don't travel trump does we've been through these problems before and we will resist every ground elf in tehran thank
