you're watching d.w. news live from bali and france says the u.s. decision to pull out of fear i mean clear deal is a mistake french president. made the comments during an exclusive interview with the w. news he also the european signatures commitments to the twenty fifteen agreed. meanwhile. i'm really surprised that tribes that decision the country's leaders now question the deals future despite european assurances also on the program north korea releases three u.s. detainees on their way home accompanied by the u.s.
8:01 pm
secretary of state washington has been pressing for their release as a show of well ahead of a planned summit this week the u.s. and north korean leaders. also coming up on russia shows off its military strength . every year moscow stages a parade to commemorate the red army speak chair of a nazi germany in world war two we look at what is behind this and it will display a russian national pride. on the global twitter campaign to oust its turkish president. we'll hear about the political tussle being played out on social media. i'm phil gramm welcome to the program. french president emanuel macro says u.s. president donald trump's to say. to quit the iran nuclear deal is
8:02 pm
a mistake they made the comments while in germany to receive the prestigious charlemagne prize it's given every year to an individual who's made a special contribution to unity in europe ahead of thursday's ceremony the french president sat down with the w. news and german public broadcaster daily for an exclusive interview. but with your . boss a president madam. thank you for taking the time with the basic idea mr president. speak to you because you're going to be awarded the shot of my new price on thursday but we cannot limit ourselves to speaking about europe alone because we have a very important topic that's right you try it to a save the air india and nuclear deal when you were in washington why did you fail . i think the most important thing is to maintain stability and peace and middle east i'm in washington and i have said this by the way i had
8:03 pm
understood that president trump wanted to. leave agreement from two thousand and fifteen and during our joint press conference i had suggested that we work on a broader framework and i am very sorry about his decision i think it is a mistake and this is why we europeans have decided like we reiterated yesterday to remain within the agreement from two thousand and fifteen as i reminded president of wanny we negotiated and signed this agreement and it allows us to control the nuclear defense activity in iran until two thousand and twenty five but this agreement needs to be completed on nuclear activities under two thousand twenty five bill is activities in the region and regional activities of iran in iraq or
8:04 pm
yemen and syria when i was in washington i said to president trump don't tear everything up but if something were you let strengthen this framework and he decided to create tension i think this was meant. to go. beyond to something broader this is what we have to do among european countries with the e.u. and with the united kingdom's germany and france we have to reaffirm that we are attached to the agreement from two thousand and fifteen because the iranian regime cannot take with its activities again. what you have heard that they are stalling there is what they said in their declaration of yesterday there is no escalation and the european decision allows us to stop the activities for now and to limit escalation and this is why we have to work together
8:05 pm
with our partners in order to limit and that's going to action of tension in the region and this is what we have been trying for months now and this is also why we have to broaden already the topics in order to bring all the parties back to a larger security and stability framework for the region because you are saying that the europeans are going to try to remain in in the agreement and adopt it but what does it really mean without the united states what is it rusts without them is . a proposal that sufficient for iran. but this is going to be our topic in the coming weeks and months and it's the mandate that we gave our foreign ministers in the e.u. and iran. because. what are you going to be able to propose while it's the agreement that we signed balls. is everything over no because one of the
8:06 pm
signatories draws out but the others are reaffirming that they're committed but i think in any event. it is a pity because we had anticipated and now we can regret his decision but it's important that we all remain obsessed by stability and peace. in the region. but the situation is very difficult very dangerous and our transatlantic relations damaged well there are some elements of tension but there are also elements of very strong anchor anchoring between us and iran and i think we can go beyond this through a larger negotiation that i proposed already in last september during the u.n. assembly with and get america and to resent maybe want to work in this direction and we have also plans on the commercial level and i think this has to be
8:07 pm
respected we are very strong trade power are the united states are an ally partner but do we have rules to abide with the w t o rules and we have to respect them and have others respect them as well it is very important that we europeans maintained a multilateral framework we have a true convergence in our views and we work together and fight against terrorism together with the united states in syria we are working together in the international coalition in africa we work together in the sire and cetera zone against islamist terrorism so you see we have some disagreements but nevertheless and most importantly we have a common interest that will to work for our common security in the same
8:08 pm
direction we are no at a historical point and we have to maintain doesn't matter that or order which we created at the end of the second world war and that is sometimes in jeopardy when we have to create a strong moderate literalism as i said in washington. france germany and great britain and negotiated to gether with iran now in europe you have reform ideas that we don't endorse are you disappointed with and get america. not at all i am you know waiting for her reply this is not our only topic that we talk about. germany waited for a long time for france to complete its reforms and i am not here to give good grades bad grades or to say i am disappointed we work together we are partners friends had a lot of work to accomplish and i think with the two day of prayer our german friends i'm talking to your viewers the german citizens because i am here
8:09 pm
and in germany and. and i think german citizens are aware that france has been transforming in the last year and many of you had been waiting for that we have reformed our labor laws we had a lot to catch up and we have created a stronger wage agreements in a system that is closer to the german system we reform our tax law. taxes for companies in order to be more competitive to have better results we are deeply reforming activity sectors that were deemed unreformable. yes i think. i mean to say i'm waiting for a reply but i already want everybody to be totally know where that the grounds of today is not the same as a year ago and i am following germany very attentively and i think you are not.
8:10 pm
entirely aware of how much we have changed we are now able to make proposals and i made proposals for europe last september and we have also had some negotiations following the election. no until june or germany will have to formulate a reply and i'm waiting for that and i have a lot of hope when i think that the chancellor and her government is going to join us in this historic moment and work together for a stronger europe and more united and more sovereign and more democratic europe that's our challenge. yes but for those who follow the events i think you will see that the german government is not working as quickly as you had expected because we have a different method and we also have to front view was if you are speaking about
8:11 pm
e.u. finance minister but germany is not endorsing that. everything that you envision is not going to be a person possible are you aware of that of course well i never said that everything that i propose as do you have to take it or leave it all i have an ambition i make proposals but i am convinced that it was my duty to do so the current status quo in europe is bad for everybody our sovereignty is being tested by everything that is happening the iranian crisis trade crisis the challenges of the digital world of internet and energy transition migration and are a capacity to protect ourselves we have to make progress and we have to be a more integrated european avant garde i would like an economic government
8:12 pm
a minister but call it whatever you want actually the end is what counts more than the names i just want a europe that is more democratic and less bureaucratic i want this in europe to be more united concerning the essential points eight. able to protect itself against the big risks and that's what i want a political in territory t. in the eurozone responsible and solidary policy see one of the other in the last years europe was of or indeed was divided several times division between the north and the south because of the financial crisis and economic crisis and then it is vision between the east and the west because of the migration crisis do you think we can go on like that forever no we have to create more solidarity in front of all those dangerous and that's the reform that i have
8:13 pm
proposed i am waiting now for the german reply together with the chancellor we have the target off replying after getting a reply in june i am following the german political live elections a new government and i think it would be a mistake to formulate a reply that lacks an ambition. germans always have the impression that they pay the bill for europe but that's just wrong that's not true. france has just as much but you are speaking to a french citizen to the germans it is not french citizens so what are you telling them what are you telling the german viewers you have the opportunity to talk to them directly to their full well i am saying this is completely wrong since the financial crisis it has been wrong everybody has contributed according to its quota germany and france as much as germany we have not helped our banks system our
8:14 pm
financial system more than other kind of countries we have and committing also helped other countries that's why i say we have to go further to create a e.u. budget that allows a real conversations of economic policy and inside the eurozone we need. more integrated economic policy to have a budget that allows us to invest we are a net contributors just like germany but i don't want this policy in order for france to benefit from it no i want to help also the other countries that want to follow us and go in the same direction and france has been carrying out reforms and the last year so i want more europe but not for the benefit of france i want more europe for the benefit of every body because in the situation where we have been in the last ten years has been beneficial for germany because germany was smart enough to carry out their reforms before the crisis and they also benefit because there
8:15 pm
are some imbalances outside of the euro zone and germany has a trade balance surplus with most countries this cannot last it's going to go on like that and if we don't go beyond our present and future then the euro zone is going to be dismantled and the europe also. does your ration where we are now collectively cannot last so the french proposal is not a proposal for france it's a proposal for europe i am going to continue carrying out reforms in my country and i can tell you that france it's a net contributor just as germany and if we don't reform you europe no we are not going to be maintained the eurozone and the euro we have to go beyond our selfish ness and our to booze and our fears we have
8:16 pm
a sum to booze and i am telling this frankly to your viewers what i want is not for me it's not for friends it's sort of all of europe that we have to go beyond our to booze germany has that said we're financial transfers about a euro zone without financial transfers cannot last france has a taboo of changing the treaty but we will have to treat it otherwise we can't go on. really mr president i have a delicious question for you i mean i see you wink. in germany and you have often been called jupiter or c s r one year into the presidency are you still a super hero worship of them well i have never presented myself as such and so i leave the responsibility for this comparison to you they are not always true i think from the first day i have been working hard i was elected president of the
8:17 pm
french republic by the french people who made a choice between extreme right wing candidate and what i had to propose and many thought that it would be impossible to be elected on the strength of european. program i know that my project is very hard to carry out and i have been working without respect from day one we have made a lot of progress but we still have a locked to do so i am working hard like in the beginning but i know i have to. push france two words more transformation but i also have to work on the european project because france has not transformed to fast enough to the last years of the last decades not with enough vision and. with ambition we have managed to to
8:18 pm
master a crisis sometimes just by applying a bandaid but we have not been as bold as our founding fathers. if you cannot manage for instance to amend the treaty if germany does not have a solution and this is to conclude if we don't find a solution does. you still have a future i'm a fighter and i never do well on bad things i'm going to put all my energy into convincing and convincing some more of the field of. i think the best way to convince is to do the job at home that's what i said from the beginning and this is why i waited until september to give my proposals for reform and then you have to explain to be humble to be constant i have no lessons to give i just say what i am suggestion and then i have to go on working and watch some war and until
8:19 pm
things are reality i am not going to choose that option that scenario because i think that would be dramatic for me of all of us and bad for germany as well germany had the courage and the strength of character to carry out very deep economic reform already ten years ago and benefited a lot from the eurozone but the situation where we know it's not going to be able to continue like that so even germany should not remain in this situation during the migration crisis germany was confronted to selfishness from all the other countries. and. has made this experience now we for the possible need more transparency more responsibility from the states but we need and most solidary europe on economic financial migration topics we need
8:20 pm
a more severin europe that is able to protect itself against the terrorists and that's more united and we need to take this step and i want you of us to understand . that it's good for them. thank you very much. for them if it was. well you so much offered. and not interfere with the french president emanuel a macro much joins us now from the german city of aachen by the president is due to receive the charlemagne prize welcome max we heard about home across saying that leaving their own nuclear deal was a mistake what is likely to happen now. well he mentioned that he wanted to have more negotiations about a more comprehensive deal that wouldn't only include what we had so far the nuclear disarmament of iran but also ballistic missiles and the role of the rand in the region how exactly that is supposed to happen though is unclear because everything
8:21 pm
depends on the position of the united states so what role is a manual mccraw likely to play and any future negotiations well we've seen him always as the man who has the well or at least the best access to the u.s. president donald trump he you remember his visit to donald trump a couple of days ago when there was a lot of bad packing and shaking even kissing and so everybody assumed that they do like each other but if you look at what michael tried to achieve in the u.s. preventing the u.s. president from getting out of the iran deal preventing the u.s. president from slapping some steel tariffs on the european union he was not very successful so even if the two men seem to like each other it's unclear if you really has any sway over donald trump but one thing's for sure even at least in public and if you look at the pictures those two leaders seem to be the leaders
8:22 pm
that get along the best if you look at all the different european leaders compared for example to i'm going to machall who doesn't have this report with donald trump so he's probably going to be the u.s. gateway to the european union but if this is going to work in any way is unclear. emmanuel mccall says i suppose at least one characteristic with donald trump as much as he's a political insurgent. it's not every day that we get to sit down with a national leader what did you make of him. well i thought that what he said was very urgent plea to fellow europeans maybe even to the germans that the european union cannot stay with the structures in the state it is in at the moment there was a very strong pledge from him for the reform of the euro zone that there would have to be a budget for the eurozone to be able to invest in the different countries and he went as far and you heard it in the interview at the end saying that if we don't do
8:23 pm
that then that probably will spell the end of the european union so very urgently here he also tried to speak to the germans directly in this sense and you can really tell this is due to his heart and although he didn't say it he did apologize for the germans in a way saying ok we understand that they're taking their time at the same time through the things he said it became clear that he expects a needs an answer rather quickly. so his is message him so he had a message to the germans i bowed to europe what about a message to germans about germany you know that's a question my colleague for mayor d.s.o. what he's telling all those germans who always think that they're having to pay for everything you can see there was a sort of heat exhaustion change when called the french president went in right away and said no that's not true that's not true the french pay as well and so we had to intervene a little bit to really for really him to understand what was what was expected of
8:24 pm
him and his message here was to the germans listen we need to do these reforms not for france not only for germany but for the whole of the european union so the this was his clear message for the european part we need to do this it's not just for one country it's for everybody. thank you so much. well as you heard from emanuel. the european countries are reassessing their commitment to the iran nuclear deal following that decision from america to withdraw and reimposed sanctions president trump has since defended the move but added that he's still open to negotiating a new deal he also warned not to restart its nuclear weapons program in response to america's withdrawal the u.s. move her sparked anger and concern amongst iran's leaders and its people. outrage in tehran iranians took to the streets to voice their anger at u.s. president donald trump they blame him for pulling out of
8:25 pm
a deal made just three years ago. and they also condemned him for signing a memorandum which reinstates harsh economic sanctions on iran. but president trump is convinced that this will bring iran back to the negotiating table. so we're going to make either a really good deal for the world or we're not going to make a deal or all. red will come back so we don't want to negotiate and of course they're going to say that if i were their position i'd say that's true for the first couple of months we're not going to negotiate but they'll negotiate. or something will happen. on the other side of the atlantic european leaders responded to trump's decision with disappointment they've down to fight to keep the deal or live. with regret but also with concern the u.s. withdrawal which of course is of great import for such an agreement. we will remain
8:26 pm
committed to this agreement and will do everything in our power to ensure that iran fulfills its commitments in future. britain has no intention of walking away instead we will cooperate with the other parties to ensure that while iran continues to restrict its nuclear program then its people will benefit from sanctions relief in accordance with the central bargain of the deal don't for us all the deal isn't dead. mr de france wishes to preserve a diplomatic and peaceful approach and this is why we are refusing to let ourselves be drawn down a path that would lead to war. yes yes but in iran those just didn't impress the country supreme leader. now it's being said that we can continue the nuclear deal with these three european countries i don't trust these three countries. of the i
8:27 pm
pressure is mounting on president hassan rouhani the deal he championed is on the line and now he faces the tough task of convincing domestic hardliners to stick to it. surely we live in interesting times let's talk about those times that passed in her mid seventy's from behind rick berg foundation a think tank affiliated with germany's green party is executive director of the north america office lies in transatlantic relations and joins us from washington welcome can europe rescue this deal without the united states. well it's hard to tell if a deal can be salvaged in the long term without the united states being a part of it but i think the important thing right now as we've seen in the previous videos is that the e.u. partners remain united on this front that they stick to the agreement which includes continuing economic relations with iran that they push back strongly
8:28 pm
against the u.s. approach to potentially introduce secondary sanctions which would really be a direct attack on the e.u. and then at the same time they remain in a dialogue with regions with with nations in the middle east as well as with the united states on how to curb iran's destructive behavior in the region beyond the question of nuclear weapons but if u.s. sanctions do bite how do you lead to sell this deal to people because the people are worse off and the west can't be trusted. well that is exactly one of one of the two biggest problems president trumps decision is that this is clearly strengthening the hardliners in tehran it is everything but conducive to a more moderate direction of the country to the hopes that many iranians have put into this agreement to be a first step in
8:29 pm
a kind of opening to the west and secondly it creates another huge rift between the united states and the european union and that is something that is neither in the interest of the e.u. nor the interest of the u.s. in my view or of global stability is there any upside in this situation for you or . i don't see any upsides but i do think some lessons could be drawn from this is the third major agreement that president trump has withdrawn from the trans-pacific partnership on trade was the first one the paris climate agreement of course and now the iran nuclear deal and in the case of the first two i do think europe did step up and initiate trade initiatives all around the world to say we are the e.u. want to be the creator of standards for trade and investment worldwide when it comes to the paris agreement they remained in close contact with the regional and local actors in the united states who committed to staying in paris and i think the
8:30 pm
lesson should be the same in this case that the e.u. needs to think about its own middle eastern policy and take a more proactive approach that's not an upside but at least it could be an important lesson to be drawn ok but the united states clearly the world's only remaining superpower any chance of it being perhaps sidelined in the international stage i say that because today of course we have the three party talks we have the south korea japan and china getting together for talks after years of discord i wonder how that's viewed from the united states as its two allies in the region. south korea and japan cozy up to china. i mean i think that there is dialogue between south korea japan and china in itself is not a bad thing i think we can you know we should all support that in general but as
8:31 pm
you rightly point out this is of course also a result of pacific allies of the united states just as much as european allies wondering if you can still rely on the united states as a partner or an ally in the long term or if you need to look at other options and countries such as china but also russia see themselves as the big winners in this game to to create rifts between the. those alliances and that's what happens if you would like donald trump not only take a step charter international agreements but in the end put into question the very nature of the global alliances that in my view have made the u.s. leading country around the world and have been by and large good for stability in the world as well said mr trump seems to be having some successes today so north korea released three american detainees are we seeing a sort of strum strategy playing out your is you just been lucky.
8:32 pm
i think it's obviously a very positive development that there are certain openings between north and south korea and that should not be downplayed but at the same time to assume that donald trump has a grand strategy when it comes to the region or even just the north korean nuclear program. woods in my view be a mistake i think what we've seen over the last year is that everything he does including international politics is playing to his domestic audience and really playing day to day tactics more so than strategy and the release of the american detainees is of course good news but it is largely a tactical shorter win for president trying that's going to play very well with domestic audiences over here i do not see how that is at this point a step towards a larger agreement that they could find although of course i would hope they they would very interesting very clear thank you so much for joining us but in her recent from be heinrich both foundation in washington. business now concerns
8:33 pm
today for the future of the european companies if they keep doing business with iran full from humphrey absolutely of course remember phil in twenty fifteen when a sanctions against iran were lifted many companies went to set up shop and do you more business in iran but of course yesterday u.s. president donald trump announcing in that one fell swoop that not only was he. putting out of the iran nuclear deal but also that he plans to reinstate those sanctions against iran as well as those he said still party to the deal and working with the country now so far germany france and the u.k. say they will remain committed to the full text revenues of one hundred thirty million euros last year of the contract with iran's surge soon after sanctions have been lifted now siemens will only say that existing projects will be completed quote as far as legally possible trumps decision is a direct hit on european plane maker airbus a contract for one hundred airliners for iran now hangs in the balance. german
8:34 pm
finance minister olaf scholtz promises to do everything possible to protect european commercial interests i'm struggling that we cannot predict at this point what we can do as the european union has come up like you know news sure you that we are in continuing talks and that i personally will have a couple of telephone conversations with the u.s. colleagues today in order to progress on that issue you don't find it was a. faux wagner had also been banking on business with iran europe's largest carmaker began exporting cars there in twenty seventeen. and a lot of german engineering companies also resumed business with the country as sanctions were lifted and the nuclear deal came into force. there were dreams. and the reality words definitely of lean not according to this dreams so now we have to see a realistic approach doing business with iran we will continue doing business with iran we will stay with our treaties to the running companies and every company must

8:43 pm
a credible challenge the show from d w social media welcome this how are people reacting. well phil president there don has challenged the turkish people to let him know when they have had enough of him and that is exactly what they are doing right now so they are flooding twitter with the word tamam which means enough in turkish and some of them are getting really it creative about it let me show you some examples here so we have somebody decorating the word to mom with the flowers we have others who are spelling out the word tot mom with food as you see here that is not just regular citizens who are taking part in this campaign against the one we even have a rare moment of unity among the opposition leaders they are also embracing of this campaign for example here the presidential candidate from the c.h.b. up of the party also saying time's up enough this has really taken off on twitter
8:44 pm
about two million people have tweeted the word over the last twenty four hours of course lots of them or most of them are in turkey as you see there but there are also others who are treating a mom from other parts of the world as you know there are a lot of turkish people who live in europe for example and they might also be a taking part in the upcoming election so how is the proactive on complimenting. well the spokesperson has a shred of the whole thing off he says that he believes that it is mainly bots who are driving of this campaign and not really human beings that we're seeing supporters they have also launched their own campaign to show that they stand behind the president so they are treating of the word divine which means go on or continue and you're also seeing some high ranking politicians and governmental officials who are also saying that they support president ed on here for example you have the foreign minister of turkey he says that everyone has big dreams
8:45 pm
a great passion we will continue to create a stronger and more prosperous turkey so although there is this this play off support for the president who won this must be something that is making him nervous of this negative campaign because everyone knows how powerful a twitter is in organizing the opposition he knows that more and more people are turning to social media as their primary source of news ever since twenty sixteen when we saw that attempted military coup and then after that there was a crackdown on a free press so what effect this campaign the time mom campaign will have on the elections we will have to wait and see on june the twenty fourth but thank you for that lucia thank you. also with the german plan widely considered to be the best a goalkeeper in the world is looking less and less likely to play next month's world cup finals manuel neuer spoke frankly about the injury that's kept him

a female silversmith in the eighteenth century all the way to a spectacular seven porcelain dessert service that was owned by napoleon himself and commissioned specially by him so you can see here the marley roof pattern it's called with detailed butterflies and insects and david rockefeller inherited his mother's love fine porcelain and tableware but he also apparently had a real passion for bugs so there are an awful lot of really interesting stories behind many of these pieces fill and included in the prices of course this this wonderful whiff of association with with the previous owners obviously a couple that were the absolute pinnacle of new york high society synonymous with with wealth and taste and and of course the many historic figures further back in history another sale started last night with that first live auction of nineteenth and twentieth century but it continues for the next three days and they're hoping to get sales of over a billion by the weekend certainly made

could possibly afford this collection so he got together a syndicate of really deep pocketed collectors and they managed to buy up the entire collection and stipulated that they would they were donated all that they would get choose one painting and so they drew strolls on a sunday morning and he got the longest one and so he got to take first pick and he chose this painting by picasso from the rose period when because it was only twenty four really an astounding work so who was the pockets deep enough to buy this stuff ah that's a very interesting question we're not really sure about that some of these works have gone it's been said they've gone to some institutions so with those it'll probably be announced at some point in the near. future the picasso in the middle east that we saw apparently went to asian buyers most of whom are still anonymous you see everybody sort of talking into the telephone is there but it's been interesting that this sort of glut of modernist works all of a sudden generated generates such incredible demand it really is out there there
