police in france say the man responsible for saturday night stabbing attack in paris was in his early twenty's and was born in chechnya he was shot dead at the scene by police after he killed one person and wounded several others authorities say the attacker had been listed in a police database of suspected extremists the so-called islamic state has described him as one of its soldiers. it's become an increasingly familiar sight on the streets of the french capital the aftermath of a terrorist attack it took place in one of parses most central districts on a busy saturday night and one person was killed. right. in front if i was working in the restaurant and suddenly i heard a woman screaming she tried to seek shelter but unfortunately she couldn't he came and attacked her that's when the panic started everyone started screaming and
3:07 pm
trying to reach our restaurant. because we had chanting and people and incredible people were shouting under the table height on the ground that's how it started because. france's anti-terrorism unit has taken over the investigation after the so-called islamic state group says it carried out the attack. at this stage due in part to witness accounts that the attacker shouted allah akbar as he attacked people with a knife. on that they're going to the paris antiterrorism judges are handling the case says. you know what authorities say the attacker was born in chechnya in one nine hundred ninety seven his parents have been detained for questioning. france's interior minister visited the injured.

left once again tonight france has been hit. by twenty nine year old man has lost his life. sure i would first like to honor his memory once again i'm in moore it is the youth of france is what it has been hit tonight else france has been ohio there since a spate of large scale terror attacks the right twenty fifteen which have been claimed or inspired by the islamic state group and have so far killed more than two hundred forty people well for more we're joined now by d.w. correspondent lisa lewis who is in paris so he said the suspect was apparently known to authorities as a security risk so while were police unable to prevent this attack while he was known to police for being on a watch list for possibly radicalized people on that watch list you've got more
3:09 pm
than twenty five thousand people and the people on that is unknown to police because they could be radicalized in this case we understand that he was on the list because he knew a man whose wife had gone to syria now obviously that's not really a crime for him you can't fault for it she could can put someone in into prison on the other hand you can say that the police intervened really quickly last night there's actually something that has changed too that more is up around to the way of operating the first unit the unit that is actually the closest to the terrorist site will intervene right away and that's what happened yesterday that is nine minutes after the emergency call had been made that police had already killed the attacker so you can argue that they reacted really quickly but it was really complicated to prevent that attack indeed and the attack of course plays on

saturday night it's a busy night and it took place in the heart of the city people are out and about so what does this tell us about the attackers intended victims who is he after. well as you said it took place in the center of paris and mariel we've got lots of bars the cinema is obviously the attack it was aiming for normal people say to say people are just going about their normal way of life having fun having a drink and that's what he wanted to target he wanted to show the french you know you can't just have a normal life and evil because an attack can happen wherever rather actually you know at any place at any time so you just don't do that however the president of france in my call has said we will not cede one inch to the enemies of freedom and many people here are determined to continue to go about their normal way of life all right so defiance from khon and people saying as they're going to go on with
3:11 pm
their daily life but nevertheless this is one of many attacks that france has suffered how are people feeling in paris today while many people in france are afraid of renewed attacks they know they can come it's likely that there will be other attacks in the future however on the one hand they are trying to don't think about that about too too often and to stoop go about their normal way of life on the other hand according to recent poll six out of ten french are in favor of the government strengthening further strengthening its anti terror legislation you must know that france has one of the toughest anti terror legislations already in the world and it's very difficult to see how the government could do that all right lisa lu is reporting for us from paris thank you. preparations are under way in israel for monday's opening of the u.s.
