officers and on innocent children including the parents were traitors and their children who acted as suicide bombers. these bombings were the worst to target churches and entities yes since a series of attacks on christmas eve in eighteen years ago which killed fifteen people and injured almost one hundred and to the christians many of whom are from the ethnic chinese minority make up about nine percent of the country's two hundred sixty million people a community now in mourning which will try to rebuild. tensions are running high as israel marks jerusalem day which commemorates israel taking control of jerusalem's old city in the one nine hundred sixty seven war scuffles broke out after israeli police allowed jewish visitors to access the temple mount officers attempted to separate jewish and muslim men in jerusalem's old city temple mount.

in arabic is one of the holiest sites in both judaism and islam. the scuffles come just a day before the united states prepares to move its embassy to jerusalem the controversial decision has drawn criticism from both palestinians and america's international partners. well our correspondent my schwager is in jerusalem and she joins us now for more so my and we do know that jerusalem day is usually a day of tension in the city and this year especially so as it's coming just a day before the opening of the u.s. embassy we understand you've seen number of protests today what more can you tell us you know as you said tensions are high in jerusalem and this is a city that's very used to high tensions we've seen at least one incident where police were scuffling on the temple mount with some israeli and some palestinian protesters there was a video of one man unfortunately being punched in the head i myself today followed
7:05 pm
some left wing israeli peace activists as they were going through the old city handing out flowers and holding signs in the shape of hearts that said we love you in various languages and the palestinian reaction to that was rather mixed some people were very accepting of it and some people were tearing up the flowers and throwing them on the ground and we have to remember this is a rather big week as you said we have the embassy opening to margery islam day is today the day after the embassy opens its knockabout day the day of catastrophe marked by the palestinians end of the week is the beginning of ramadan the muslim holy month and we have to remember last night israel won the your vision song contest so there's a lot of intersecting threads of a story coming together here are my let's talk about the opening of the u.s. embassy in jerusalem now it is a very controversial move why is that. it's hard to understand exactly why it's controversial without understanding the entire
7:06 pm
history of the city of jerusalem of basically israel has always claimed that the entire city of jerusalem is their capital which is not something that is internationally recognized and in fact jerusalem day marks the time after the nine hundred sixty seven war when israel annexed east jerusalem which is what the palestinians claim as their capital now most country is keep their embassies in tel aviv in order to avoid any sort of controversy or clash with the palestinians in order to in part facilitate the peace process but the u.s. is now moving their embassy to jerusalem which is actually a promise that the u.s. has been making sense really president clinton in the one nine hundred ninety s. president clinton president george w. bush both promised they would move the u.s. embassy to jerusalem and then backed away from that promise when they were informed that it would inflame tensions and probably scuttle the peace process but now we see that president trump is keeping this promise and is likely to further hinder the peace process. reporting for us from jerusalem thank you.

well ahead of the opening of the u.s. embassy on monday our reporter tanya kramer asked jerusalem residents how they feel about their new neighbors. the street signs for the new u.s. embassy have already gone up this usually quiet residential neighborhood in south to slim has become the focus of attention. the building behind me which currently houses the consular services off the us will become the new american embassy moving the embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem it's highly controversial the international consensus remains that the status of the city should be agreed upon through negotiations for now only the us ambassador and a limited number of stuff offices will move to to slim from tel aviv the complete bilocation will take many years the majority of israelis supports the u.s. move like here in downtown west jerusalem journalism is after all the capital of
7:08 pm
israel i believe it and of course there will be i believe there should be some the palestinian state and if they want part of jews them someday find an agreement but i think it's ok the u.s. does move the embassy over here because this is after all capital in israel ask every kid what's their capital it's just was a limb and you said that chai think the american embassy should be in jerusalem tightly on the shoreline kind of percent i think all the embassies including the u.s. embassy of course should be into islam because jerusalem is the capital of israel actually fly and observers say that the defacto recognition by the u.s. would have long term consequences jerusalem today is more divided more by national less sustainable and more contested than ever before and nothing has changed about this move is a hollow gesture on the other hand it indicates a collapse of united states stewardship over political processes and tells the
