the god of abraham isaac and jacob thanking you for bringing us to this momentous occasion in the last you're just joining us you're watching images here of the inauguration of the new u.s. embassy in jerusalem relocated from tel aviv that was david friedman the u.s. ambassador to israel speaking there this was a campaign promise from donald trump but that he followed through on and we did see his daughter ivanka trump trump and her husband question on hand as well as the deputy secretary of state and the secretary of the treasury all joining israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu had of the ceremony netanyahu saying this move will bring peace to the region critics say it will do the opposite of only inflame tensions. and now we have our correspondents covering this story for us to remind you of china was honest with us here in our studios and. outside the embassy tanya kramer and let's bring you back in here what did you make of freeman's comments.
3:16 pm
yeah friedman was very much toeing the line in praising president trump there and banging really hard on this u.s. promise that has been made over and over and over again to move the u.s. embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem and we should remind ourselves that the u.s. congress did actually pass a law in one thousand nine hundred ninety five saying that they would move the embassy and the u.s. president says that his signing these waiver saying they would keep it in tel aviv in order to avoid the very controversy that we're seeing here today with what we're seeing and gaza and even here at this site where the u.s. embassy is protests happening and it was really trump who decided that he was going to make good on this promise in order to please a big part of his base there the conservative evangelical christians and the conservative pro israel jews who are big supporters of president truck from the beginning and this is very much a red meat for those two demographics you know they were david freedman starting
3:17 pm
off with thanking donald trump for making this movie why is it them that we saw the white house and his daughter ivanka trump a jury question or not donald trump and jury trial. was probably absolutely this is the big question here today and i will actually say the four senators who friedman thanks for being there they had a press conference early in the day in this exact question was asked of them why isn't trump here why isn't even vice president mike pence of the secretary of state here to commemorate what is being touted as a huge historic moment for israeli u.s. relations and they really just didn't answer the question they said we're going to let them speak for themselves and it is sort of a big mystery why they themselves are here and why they're sending sort of the first jewish couple of america which is a volga and jared instead of alconbury are very highly regarded in certain parts of the american jewish community but that reputation has really been tarnished throughout the past months of the trial presidency a scandal after scandal has been hitting the administration all right tanya i want to come to you know your history saloon. as my own mentioned there have been major

protests today in violence as well israeli soldiers shooting dead more than twenty palestinians tell us more about what's been happening it's all just refer to worry about what we see in those protests leading up to this stage today over the past six or seven weeks and mainly young people but you know today that people from all over gaza are coming to the border regions back called for by all the factions to come and to come and protest so we've seen that they're saying to people i took their they're saying that you know they're coming to protest to close of calls it has been closed for the last ten years it's also beating up to knock but day because what many palestinian also angered is that the sea was moved on the day that historically israel is celebrating its foundation of the state of israel seventy years ago but it's just also before constance referred to as nakba day and then they lost their land in ninety eight so we've seen very very.
3:19 pm
protests in gaza with the test told by the hour rising a lot of in the hundreds not people injured mainly by loss of the nation but also by tear gas people saying that you go to area tell you what about the easter reform itself our police they're bracing for violence. i mean there have been some words about smaller protests we haven't seen much here there are protests in the occupied west bank mainly you know the checkpoints one for example between. here in east jerusalem occupied is true is missing a high presence of course of israeli security forces so far it has been rather quiet but of course as the day goes on and very closely following what is happening also in gaza very very somber. and shiny coming to you our middle east analyst what
3:20 pm
do you think this move means for the peace process well it's hard you know the peace process has been dying for so long it's hard to know what will be the last blow that will kill it i mean the palestinians right after speculation that he's going to move the embassy said for us that means that as a mediator that the u.s. as a mediator to these talks this is no longer this can no longer be they have clearly clearly showed himself as having clear bias for these really and we see him. relevant for the process anymore however we do you know we were trying to figure out why is that the jason. there today and this is i think is a sign this is a hint of the americans are trying to say we've not given up on the peace process because these two are the ones in charge for trump on the peace process and on giving you know offering and presenting a piece the new push in peace initiative yesterday the first meeting they had was with prime minister netanyahu and his ambassador to the u.s.
3:21 pm
ron dermer discussing exactly that how can the peace initiative be presented to the palestinians right and again if you're just joining us we're watching the inauguration of the new u.s. embassy we have been seeing the rabbi zalman while awake delivering his blessings and this is the u.s. ambassador david friedman speaking let's listen in again to him. deputy secretary sullivan served last month as our acting secretary of state leading the transition of leadership to secretary of state mike peo he then returned to the number two position in the state department i am honored to introduce deputy secretary john j. saul thank you. thank you and besser friedman for those kind remarks on behalf of secretary pompei oh thank you for your dedicated efforts to establish this diplomatic mission and to

3:23 pm
he regrets that he's unable to be here with us today in person the secretary asked me to convey a on his behalf the great pride that he feels a pride that i share and this is storage day for our two countries as president trump said in december moving the u.s. embassy embassy to jerusalem is first a recognition of reality a reality many many years in the making to rouge limb is indisputable the capital of israel a capital chosen by a sovereign nation as the seat of its government but moving the u.s. embassy on a broader scale is also a step towards advancing peace in this city in the broader region and throughout the world. the streets of jerusalem with its many temples mosques and churches point to its place in history but in jerusalem we can also see
3:24 pm
a glimmer of the future filled with hope the hope for a greater understanding and peace today i'm confident that the u.s. embassy in jerusalem will be in the words of president trump a magnificent tribute to peace that is what we are celebrating here today as we officially open the newest diplomatic mission of the united states of america as we do we also recognize the deep and historic friendship that brought this mission into being on this day as several have noted the united states recognize the state of israel it is fitting that today we mark a new milestone and a new day of great hope and promise for the united states and israel the state department is proud to continue our close cooperation with the israeli government and people from our new wemba see here in jerusalem we're grateful to president

3:26 pm
a television event a we've been talking about this here in our studio with shiny was honest and our source spondon says in east jerusalem is tanya kramer and my actuators outside the embassy shop in china just want to start with you very quickly because we heard solomon there say this is a day of pride and also a milestone for peace is this going to bring stability to the region well doesn't seem like it i mean what the trumpet is really station is finding pride in is the fact that the saudis have been very quiet about this move sort of giving their quiet consent definitely not being against america and they see it as a as another proof of the possibility for an alliance between the moderate forces in the sunni world in the arab world against of course iran this is also something that needs to be put in the context will it bring peace i doubt that the palestinians a very strong in their position to trump right now tony just briefly if you can is this the beginning of the end of the palestinian dream of statehood. well i mean you hear
3:27 pm
a lot about this saying you know this is conducive to peace. this is a move to peace i don't think palestinians see that as a move towards peace for them nor historical ties to the city they say you know the u.s. is only looking is ready writes the city and of course on a day when the embassy is moving what is happening right now in gaza this doesn't look like peace for many palestinians here and decided all right maya just very briefly how significant is this for the u.s. . all this definitely significant for the u.s. israeli relationship and for a lot of people who have ever doubted the u.s. his commitment to the israeli side of things this definitely so what if the idea that the u.s. is on equivocally on israel side all right our correspondents maya schwager they're out side of the new embassy tanya kramer in east jerusalem and of course she resigned as our middle east analyst with us here in studio thank you all very much for your insights. thank you for watching debbie we'll have much more for you at
