whom was just eight years old. a year on how are people coping. well this is undoubtedly a city that's been changed irrepairable by the attack that took place here one year ago today that people have been very clear that they don't want to be defined by their grief they want to be defined by their response to this that was out on display just how proud and the spirits of manchester really was on display on the night of the attack and in the days following as well you had people lining up to give blood you had numerous people everywhere you went i mean i was here a year ago and spoke to so many people were just trying to raise money for the victims funds that something that you're still seeing a year on today people everybody just trying to do their bit there was actually there was a minute's silence here not so long ago that was held across the country and it was incredibly moving watching people's response here people some people of course

crying you had policemen who have been removed their helmets this really is a day for respect for those who lost their lives now this happened and i ran aground i called such and she has been in touch. she has indeed she's tweeted out she let me just read to you what she said she writes thinking if you'll sending all the lights and warmth i have to offer on this very challenging day of course it was an ariana grande day concert that this attack took place on you might remember phil as well that just under two weeks after the attack took place she returned and how the streaming meeting concert for the people of manchester alongside a number of other big names is there is a way of showing strength of solidarity in the aftermath of this attack and wanting to prove that manchester will not be broken but it isn't just area on the ground day he's responded today we've also had a statement from to reason may she said that this was attack and attack of cowardice and she praised manchester for its response so far saying it's proven

that it will not be broken. and not just a thank you. facebook chief executive mark zuckerberg is to face a grilling from you. no makers in brussels today they want to know how data for millions of facebook users was leaked to a political consultancy employed by donald trump i also want to know why facebook failed to reveal the leak despite being aware of his existence as early as twenty fifteen the meeting comes three days before you were a major new data privacy law. if his two day appearance before the u.s. congress last month was any indication members of the european parliament can expect a suited respectful guest. well congressman congressman congressman congressman congresswoman building at the grilling in congress politicians were at times blunt your user agreement shocks there were also replies
5:06 pm
certain to get like from facebook lawyers as someone who uses facebook i believe that you should have complete control over your data don't. visit to brussels comes just days before a massive reform of european privacy rules is rolled out the ultra bureaucratic sounding general data protection regulation the g.d.p. are will cause headaches for social media platforms with european customers as a greatly strengthens the rights of users it forces companies that exploit user data to seek explicit consent and it adds teeth to regulations so that enforcement is easier with tougher penalties for companies that don't comply can expect plenty of questions related to facebook's compliance with the g.d.p. are plenty more related to the alleged misuse of facebook data by cambridge and a little the now defunct british consultancy that worked on getting us president donald trump elected. zuckerberg will have little privacy himself during his time
5:07 pm
before parliament all of the action will be live streamed from brussels. and the day w. correspondent matter is the welcome what should we expect well first of all expect an apology that has already been in fact released. once again apologizes for the data misuse that has taken place and makes a couple of promises he says he will invest more into efforts to avoid such a thing in the future and he also emphasized in that statement that has already been released that he for him keeping people safe keeping data safe is more important than making profit well whether that statement is true or not we'll see then when it comes to the grilling and that is where about fifteen people will have forty five minutes time from the european parliament to ask him pointed questions it is less time and it is less people than we saw on capitol hill about a month ago but the questions might be more pointed because they have of course the

advantage that they could listen to this first hearing and it's only three days until the e.u. puts a new sweeping data protection law so a lot of pressing questions on the part of e.u. lawmakers. in brussels thank you well to appear in front of lawmakers in the next ninety minutes or so and when that happens we'll bring it to you live here on d w let's move now to some of the other stories making news around the world sixteen people have been killed and dozens injured in a car bombing in afghanistan a minivan packed with explosives detonated while security services try to diffuse it although the area around the van had been cleared to when it exploded the death toll is expected to rise as rescue workers search the rubble no group has claimed responsibility. a court in germany has rejected a move by prosecutors to rearrest the catalan separatist leader carlos proved more german prosecutors argue that new evidence from spain show catalan leader was

provoking violence butanol has been in germany since he was arrested on an international arrest warrant two months ago. the palestinian foreign minister has referred israel to the international criminal court following recent bloodshed on the gaza border palestinians are calling for an immediate investigation into alleged israeli crimes more than one hundred people have been killed in recent weeks israel says it is defending its borders against terrorists. now a group of foreign journalists as arrived in north korea at the invitation of supreme leader kim jong un they've been granted access in order to what witness the planned dismantling of the put engineering nuclear test site in the north west of the country the promise to destroy the facility is viewed as a goodwill gesture i had a very historic summit with u.s. president donald trump next month. bad bad guy is a senior fellow for asia from the german council on foreign relations here in the

boat and welcome to d w. will journalists witness a functioning nuclear test site being dismantled well that's the official test site of where all the tests happened there were of course rumors that the test site has called ups during their previous nuclear test that there were such chinese reports that this has happened but there were also reports now that on the summit between kim and moon that there were two new functioning tunnels which provided access to this site and these tunnels are supposed to because now during this symbolic gesture if the so if this if this happens what effect will it have on north korea's ability to test nuclear weapons or first of all or first of all i think north korea wants to demonstrate that it has full capabilities and doesn't need any testing at the moment just to further dominate the narrative but in case
5:11 pm
that one needs tests in the future it would be very easy to reopen these tunnels and use these facilities again so it's it would be a matter of a couple months to to get these fun side functioning again but the big part of this is we don't need to test any more because we know they work exactly for the signal is we don't need we have a capability. everyone's looking forward to that there's some hidden in june between kim jong un and us president donald trump is that still on. well this depends what is happening next i mean at the moment there has been a lot of talk and debate in washington but doesn't doesn't really indicate there's a strategy there the different actors from pedro and bolton very different approaches and i think there might be some infighting in washington as well so if there's any backsliding into the old fire and fury rhetorical or if there's more talk about to levy a solution north korea might well say it's not the right time for talks yet because north korea has been has been grumbling recently about comments coming out of the

white house well up your sleeve i mean if you're in the situation that you try to resolve a conflict and set up a process that will lead to eventually lead to a peace process it's not the right time to escalate it and so at the moment is the time to negotiate and bring the diplomats to the table so perhaps at the end of the day it's not even a good idea to have a big summit it's a time of the diplomats at that moment south korea's president and he's in washington today what's he looking for from the president from well i think he tries to brief donald trump about what is happening so far what the two koreas agreed on and what the right way would be forward so it is very important to to give the message to to washington that this is the beginning of a process that the process has to be set up the terms of the pros have to be agreed on and there won't be any deal at this stage so there needs to be some kind of
5:13 pm
understanding that any summit that will happen will be symbolic but will not bear any results so i'm interested in this notion that this is the start of a process because there seems to be a difference in interpretation on the two sides between what. the meeting of. complete denuclearization if you could briefly just some of what's going on there where the differently diverging expectations on the one hand there's north korea which expects a long term deal where its own sick. the security interests are guaranteed which involves. the whole korean peninsula which appropriately even involves the nuclear umbrella which the us is providing on their us side there's a clear understanding that the condition that you nuclearization is a condition for any process of these misunderstanding or just diverging expectations cannot be mediated than there will be no way forward we will.
