this is news coming to you live from berlin germany and china defined the u.s. signaling support for the red nuclear deal german chancellor angela merkel says both nations stand behind the twenty fifteen agreement despite the u.s. pulling out earlier this month is in china for talks with top government leaders we look at michael's high stakes diplomacy also coming up italy's president gives decepticon take his approval to become prime minister political know all those charged with leading a government of extremes is this the beginning of europe's next crisis to bring you
7:01 am
the latest from. hello i'm terry martin welcome to the program in beijing german chancellor angela merkel says both china and germany are committed to standing by the arrest and nuclear deal had a joint news conference merkel and else continued support for the deal it was recently abandoned by washington despite being signed by several nations in two thousand and fifteen michael was welcomed by the chinese premier league and will meet with president xi jinping during her two day trip before landing in beijing merkel said she will also focus on human rights and discussing international trade to speakers. well here to talk through the chancellor's visit to china we're joined by our cheap. it'll ever make it
7:02 am
a quick and hot from our business desk of course because let's start with you because visit to china comes at a very sensitive moment with the u.s. pulling out of the iran nuclear deal and transatlantic time weakening how important are sino german relations in light of these developments. well they've always been important and at this crucial time a lot of the issues that are very important to germany and to europe and really are closely pegged to the chinese economic but also political minds business is always an issue china is the second largest economy it's a key market many but when we talk about the iran nuclear deal basically keeping it alive also means giving iran economic options and making this viable now there's no control certainly in germany over what companies will do once this this withdrawal from the united states really kicks in and if they are faced with the choice to still do business with the united states the biggest economy in the world
7:03 am
or iran is going to be a very clear choice so we saw a hint of that in this press conference that companies will probably leave that china could potentially move in and simply do that it can easily compensate for that but the question is does it want to do that it will not contribute to a kind of so down with the united states in economic terms because of course china has key economic interests in the u.s. as well so it's a very complex situation but one thing is clear if the e.u. has to stand alone in keeping this alive it's simply cannot do it and that's why these two leaders certainly see eye to eye and that's where these close relations that have been built up this is the eleventh visit a beginning to really pay off that they can talk to each other in these difficult times more on the iran nuclear you're looking at that specifically because germany and china are both signatories to the deal russia of course through along with the u.s. but the u.s.
7:04 am
has now pulled out as you say do germany and china have the same interests in solving in this deal and really how much leverage do they hurt. well that will be the big question in the end how this plays out they certainly have had interest here there's a lot of talk about this rule based international order well certainly time is not sticking to the. rules look at the south china sea it is playing a different political game at the same time as pledging its support for free markets and of all based international order now the iran nuclear deal was is key for the e.u. because it really gives an option diplomatic option to solving conflicts also in the future when you look at the korean peninsula this could have been a potential roadmap out of this standoff over north korea's nuclear program and by pretty much throwing out the iran nuclear deal the united states is killing the belief in any kind of future cygnets of a u.s. president on anything potentially similar in the future and china does not want
7:05 am
that conflict on its doorstep get hot trade another big focus of this visit or trade connections between germany and china becoming more important in light of u.s. protectionism because both china and germany have been hit by trump's new trade policies well trade between germany and china always was one of the key issues the major issues the broader picture is this international trade is like a board game of finely balanced board game where if it's level everything is good everybody is trading with everyone but then there's one player now trump who is really. his fist on the board and all the everything has come into the into disarray and it's not only that was merkel is discussing with her chinese counterpart how to deal with trump for example which of course will be part of it but also they're vying for positions because they're competitors to in this in the
7:06 am
in the international marketplace so everybody is trying to gauge what can i gain here as well and if you look at. the china u.s. dispute germany has profited from it china's lower tariffs across the board of car to car imports from twenty five to. fifteen percent who profits german coffee makers their shares yesterday went up one point five and two point zero point five percent. b.m.w. and mercedes and on the other hand also china shows how malta the lateral is ms down. of course this is a time of tariffs of course many people are reeling right now in the business community about the u.s. possibly levying twenty five percent tariffs on car imports now because they consider it a strategic sector but. of course chancellor merkel has a business delegation with her on this trip as she has on her previous visits and this is about she's been there about
7:07 am
a dozen times as chancellor this is their first visit now and are in this new legislative period what do german companies who are with my call sitting on that plane and talking to their counterparts in china what do german companies want in china and from china is very simple they want easier market access they warned the restrictions lifted that are currently in place on if you want to access the chinese market you have to do it via joint ventures in china otherwise you pay the high tariffs and they want more assurance as we've got in property theft because at the moment for example if you're a startup in germany you want to bring your product into china you have to open for example that you'll source codes to them so it's very easy for the chinese that are these parts to just grab the source code and do do their own sayings and those are two key issues internet intellectual property a big big issue of course this afternoon chancellor merkel is going to meet with the president xi jinping in china what can we expect. well there will be
7:08 am
a big state dinner and we're not expecting any kind of big announcements we already saw in that press conference that was held this morning that she when rights was also mentioned that individual cases were discussed and that is more than a hint that they might have talked about the would a of the nobel laureate job oh who's been and the house arrest for eight years so and that is certainly something one must bear in mind we're talking about business all the time but these are very different systems and it is a closed society that is something the german songs of raises every single time but she will tread carefully as she always does and we're just going to see them reaffirming those relations that are becoming so crucial in these times of top political editor me. business anchor and editor thank you so both so much. german foreign minister. has said europe is a long way from a compromise with the u.s. on a new iran nuclear deal moss who is on a visit to washington was speaking after back to back meetings with the u.s.
7:09 am
secretary of state mike pompei o. and national security advisor john bolton u.s. pulled out of the twenty fifteen accord as we mentioned a move which germany has called a threat to international security. in my opinion we are far away from a compromise. we are taking two completely different approaches the approach that germany has decided to take along with france and the u.k. that is the one we will continue to pursue in europe. german foreign minister there on his first visit in that position to the u.s. our washington bureau chief alexander phenomena has been following the german foreign minister's u.s. visit she sent us this report. a frank but constructive discussion with trans national security advisor both. a firm handshake with u.s. secretary of state but no joint statement no breakthrough german foreign minister

came to washington to make clear that europe is united in supporting the existing nuclear deal with iran and that it wants to work together with the u.s. however at the end of his visit he had to acknowledge that the transatlantic partners remain deeply divided and are far away from a compromise and iran is only one issue trades climate change the middle east policy agreed to disagree seems to be the new normal transatlantic relations. it appears. there in washington well as president has approved just as that country's next prime minister was put forward for the post by italy's two main populist parties the far right league and the establishment five star movement the appointment of a lawyer political novice is designed to weeks of political deadlock in his except in speech he vowed to form
7:11 am
a government of change but said he was aware that he needed to honor european and international of course he also promised to protect italians at home and brought. the president has given me the mandate to form a government which i have accepted with reservation if i manage to form this government i will present to the palm and chambers a program that he's banked on the interests of the majority political parties. i'm preparing now to defend the interests of all italians in all places in europe and internationally in dialogue with the european institutions and with representatives of other countries. i will be the defense lawyer of the italian people. with putting together a cabinet in the new government will then need to be approved in parliament
7:12 am
a vote is expected next week italy has been without a government since elections in early march left no party with a clear majority now appointment has left some in italy concerns the parties who put him in who put him forward the five star movement and the leak fiercely immigration election campaign foreigners in italy are starting to worry about their prospects under the new government for. its learning italian through games like this one originally from mali he comes to this school in eastern rome four times a week along with other migrants and refugees but that might change if the new italian government has its way. definitely aware that something has changed here people are starting to give them strange looks are they getting a first hand experience of the shift in italian politics. the

a populist coalition government. that we've had very little substantial progress in politics over the last few years i hope this alliance if you can call it that will make a positive difference. also must ensure that i feeling nervous about this. we're taking a big risk. i think good italians have had enough of traditional politics and we haven't got much to show for. europe and we don't yet. but many refugees in italy like to come out to and from mali have reason to feel uneasy now. i think it's crazy that they actually want to send us back i can't believe i've been hearing about this since i got here it's just insane. shit full. that's why people in classrooms like this one on the edge of rome hope
