waiter welcome to the program it's a historic moment for ireland the nation is set to legalize abortion in a land slide vote exit polls estimate nearly seventy percent of people voted in favor of repealing the eighth amendment to the constitution which currently outlaws abortion in all cases except when the mother's life is in danger and marks another huge societal shift in a country where the catholic church has traditionally played a big role. post predictions all of this to change cool on one of his most divisive social issues i was ecstatic because it was such a it could have been such a close call but i think a lot of us were expecting a no so just see thought it was bad seemed to me like a pretty enthusiastic yes that was amazing yeah i just want to be a. pretty great movie really. going to change
1:02 pm
a lot of things. and may not have official results yet but two major exit polls suggest the emerald iowa will repeal its constitutional ban on abortions currently abortion is only allowed when a woman's life is at risk but not in cases of rape incest or fetal abnormality the referendum's divided the nation provoking strong emotions from science. i don't believe we have the right to kill a baby in do with and i would call a baby. may not call a baby and. if the exit polls too much the result the irish government has said it would legislate by the end of the year to allow for abortion up to twelve weeks with medical consent. for more we're joined from a vote counting center in dublin by joan collins she's a member of the irish parliament with the independents for change party representing south central dublin john welcome thank you so much for being with us
1:03 pm
now the predictions right now is that ireland will repeal the constitutional ban on abortions this is really a historic choice what are your thoughts. that it's a very significant day for our nation it's a very some pretty third nation and we've hasn't debates that's been at times divisive but i think what has happened today is that the people of our own to have shaken the shackles of the conservative catholic church off their backs and i think for that reason is very significant but i also think as i said some for it because people have to struggle with their own. experiences and family experiences and i think at the end with this photos we've come a long long way. this was a very emotional decision for many voters what would you say to those who actually
1:04 pm
voted against changing the amendment. i would say that this is a democratic votes and by voting no you expressed your opinion and we all respect their opinion and we did that in the very beginning of this campaign over the years and what i would say to them is that there's no need to fear anything no one's going to be forced to have an abortion it's all a better choice it's all about health care for women in this country and now we are expecting the yes vote to be confirmed today that's what the exit polls are showing which means that ireland's government is going to have to start providing for abortions in a medical system that previously had been it had been legal to what challenges lie ahead in that sense. it's very big challenges because. our health service is out in no time low literally at this stage and without having to provide the services but i think it's really been put up to the health service napsylate
1:05 pm
for the house to be resources put into the health service and it has to be supported put into the health service and that's going to quite significant and will be quite and a mountain to climb but i think this vote will actually. force a had system as a department to actually deliver on the service they need to provide for women in this country. now this is the latest of what seems to be a wave of liberalization that sweeping ireland just a few years after same sex marriage was legalized one message do you think this sends to the rest of the world about ireland in twenty eighteen. i think what it senses award is that our and has moved we're not the backwater little island that people would have assumed we were over fifty years ago forty years ago even thirty years ago and i think we've moved quite away from our own experiences and from family experiences and from empathy and understanding and i think
1:06 pm
generally the nation and has expressed that today in their votes and i think countries like argentina and the philippines would be looking to our land for hope and that they could change their apportion those tears well and i hope our message today the overwhelming message that this country and has voted to repeal were the most stringent and piece of legislation in europe i think that should send out a positive message to the nations and other women and other men to the countries that it can be doing and things can change joan collins in dublin at a vote counting center where they are expected to be repealing ireland's abortion laws is a member of the irish parliament thank you so much for joining us. and thank you to your audience now to some of the other stories making news around the world saudi crown prince mohammed bin solomon has reportedly imposed

1:09 pm
a winning machine on the european stage but one man stands tall amongst them christiane right now that was netted fifteen times in the champions league this propofol rails goals in the competition. when you have christiane zero in the tame to the best and he proves it every year but five times champion liverpool have this competition in their blood they used to dominate but their last title was two thousand and five now they have german coach you're going club excelling abroad his top man is not common sila back home in egypt he's a megastar on the final could be his crowning glory he has played this season which is outstanding but he's young and has now potential to improve so that's really good news. again political we could be in for a coffee in kiev i'm all right we've got these two giants meeting on the field tonight who is your pick for the masonite you know i have to go with reality dritte
1:10 pm
because simply they've been there and done that more than any other team in this particular competition and they're led by just a master on the pitch a goal machine in christianity and although you know he scored more goals than any other player in champions league history and he could potentially become the first player to score in consecutive champions the finals real madrid to play for a three peat we're talking about the michael jordan of this fort in crescendo rinaldo and then his team is full of stars they have arguably the best midfield in all of football you have marcello sergio ramos i mean the team is stacked i think it will be experience versus inexperience that the experience will prevail at the end of the day all right the liverpool does have a long record of success in this and they're german klopp. does love himself a challenge doesn't he yeah it definitely does now in terms of liverpool they've won it five times they've been at this final stage in the champions league a record eight times in the premier league but in terms of european club you can cope has only been to the champions league final one time which he lost he has lost
1:11 pm
actually five of six major finals the only file he's won has been the german cup but you can call his magical in special he does something to motivate his side so much so in opposing the midfielder toni kroos had something positive to say about germany's you're can quote. my my experience with him so there's always tough to play. for us but by a time years ago was always very difficult to play dog because his teams always had more or less the same style of playing football and that's why i'm sure it's going to be very difficult for us on on saturday because i know how he how he's able to motivate his team and speaking of liverpool i believe there are some liverpool fans who are not going to be able to get to kiev for the match why is that all the disgruntled these thousand fans reportedly will miss out on the action in kiev because four flights were cancelled due to no place to land which still as you have
1:12 pm
been trafficked is actually trying to come to the ukraine you know right now but most livable a liverpool player actually credited the fans it and field of being like an extra player on the pitch subtract that one thousand fans it's got to sting a bit for liverpool because that means a lot to the working class club but we have to see how they'll fare without that additional support of. ten from the r.t.w. sports desk thank you so much for previewing the game for us ok. rock star david bowie once asked is there life on mars scientists are now hoping to find out two years ago the joint european russian program exo mars launched a probe to the red planet after a long journey has now descended into low orbit where it will sniff the surface for methane a possible indicator that life once existed on mars or perhaps even still does. the first high resolution images from the exo mars probe on its new orbit they

showed part of a crater in the northern hemisphere and perhaps evidence of me thing gas on the surface of the red planet we know that the lifetime when we thing is very short just a few hundred years it will be broken down by the sunlight by the u.v. component of the sunlight so if it is there no we know that it has to be refilled all the time and where does it come from that's the big question. and a question that photos alone khandaan so the european space agency and its russian counterpart ross cosmos plan to send a remote lending vehicle to mars within the next two years the exo mars rover will be fitted with a drill that can take samples as deep as two meters below the planet's surface scientists are hoping to determine whether the methane is a result of geological or biological activity of the team is excited about the possibilities. of course he's very special thing is that that there's actually

a place that you can imagine yourself walking on eventually with a not too far in the time in the future surely people will be walking on was that makes is very exciting and then to think about this idea that they might be in some kind of life or even exist today on the ground that makes it a very special place. despite differences on european and russian cooperation in space could help unlock the mysteries of the red planet. and a reminder of our top story we're following here exit polls in ireland show more than two thirds of voters support ending the country's near total ban on abortions official results are expected later on today. that's it from d.w. news live from berlin for this hour don't forget you can always check out our web site t w dot com for all the latest breaking news thanks for tuning in.
