has called the attack serious. there is indeed a major incident that is taking place in leisure at the moment with us working we are monitoring the situation with the minister of the interior and the minister of justice and the crisis center. i want to give support on behalf of the government for the family of the victims we will have an opportunity to give more information later today. so that was the best talking this is a short while ago joining me now from brussels is our correspondent kyung a modest guild lesia is not very far from brussels value of what is known about the near shooting at the circumstances in which it took place well we have just learned here in rita that a security perimeter has been erected around the place of the shoot out and police still or just people to stay away from that site there's also media reports on the

background of that attack or if you want to call in this way who apparently has been released only recently from jail but this apparently only minor offenses so far no official link to terrorism at least that is what we know so far and killed the authorities have not ruled out terrorism as a motive what indications are there that this may have been a terrorist attack. moore there are two key indications one is of course that just an hour ago the terror police and the terror prosecutors in belgium have taken over the case so that is a clear indication and then there is of course the link to the via shootout which took place in generally two thousand and fifteen when police took heavy fire from a terror cell in their view which is just outside of li age and they could make
1:04 pm
connections to the terror attacks in the november two thousand and fifteen in paris so this terror cell back then was planning an attack on police and so in this case we have two police officers who have been shot so you could establish a link but nothing has been officially confirmed in that direction as yet it's still too soon in brussels thank you very much for being us up to date on that breaking news story. and of course go we'll be keeping an eye on that story and we'll bring you more details as soon as they become available here in germany the country is remembering the most deadly anti foreigner attack in its post-war history twenty five years ago four young men set fire to the home of a family in the western german city of building five people died and fourteen were injured today chancellor angela merkel will host one of the survivors at a memorial event. has this report. on this day the ganj family lost nearly everything two young women and three girls

a sixteen year old near nazi lived across the street from the victims all together four young men were sentenced to lengthy prison terms to motor racism. i feel no hatred towards the people of germany we are all brothers and sisters the german state and turkish governments have given me assistance. but i will never forgive these four perpetrators. the arson attack and zoning in was the culmination of a wave of races attacks on immigrants and refugees in the one nine hundred ninety s. installing in greven discuss transforms into indignation there were three triads for days. back then there was a huge pedestrian zone here we walked through it and were shocked when we heard about the attack. the day after the attack it was like a war zone here. that they were burning tires on the streets it was

a catastrophe. since them have again she has called on her compatriots for reconciliation and peace the arson and bursaries are particularly difficult for a seventy five year old and her husband but it's important for her to remind people what happened that day her granddad her helps. give me my wish is that we look towards the future. part that we treat each other with respect and are an example for the next generation. so many of my compadre it's live in germany i wish that we could all live respectfully and amicably together. in one hundred ninety six method again she was awarded the federal cross of merit for commitment against racism and revenge she's lived in germany for forty eight years living zoning out of the question for her. today a memorial commemorates the crime it symbolizes it is torts was to come of it again
1:08 pm
just pleased that turkish and german state representatives are coming to the memorial this year she's only concerned that a day of mourning is being instrumental ised politically and ideologically. joining me now is the deadliest chief political correspondent from our parliamentary studios linda a large commemoration is planned today but twenty five years ago the then german chancellor helmut accord distance himself from the memorial service for victims what has changed in germany in the last twenty five years. well certainly at the political level a great deal of the chancellor at that time helmut kohl announced that he wouldn't be going he refused to go when the speaker said it was because the chancellor didn't want to take part in condolence tourism that's simply unthinkable today we will see the chancellor attending a memorial services today in dusseldorf and we will also we have heard a large number of german political leaders government leaders speaking out for
1:09 pm
example the foreign minister saying an attack on any immigrant here in this country is an attack on all of us and this memorial is a time to remember that we must speak out we must not turn away we must not remain silent so a very clear political message there and yet there are still vestiges of the kind of attitude that helmut kohl reflected at that time if you remember the asylum laws had just been tightened in germany twenty five years ago and in fact there were debates within the christian democratic party ruled by helmut kohl and also the party of the current chancellor about whether germany was even an immigration country at all the fact is today very few people would debate that yet we do hear the head of the chancellor sister bavarian sister party saying that islam doesn't belong to germany so there are still vestiges of that old attitude even at the top political leadership now most gyms do see themselves as having

a very open and welcoming approach to foreign has asked the public level has to disclose change with the camera recognition off racism and how to combat it. absolutely it has and of course this is the country that in twenty fifteen admitted nearly a million migrants there are thousands and thousands of germans working with migrants every day to help them try to integrate and when we have seen a rise for example recently in anti-semitic attacks there has been a very clear and strong reaction a reaction that we also saw this weekend when the far right party in germany the a.f.d. party marched here in berlin and nearly five times as many people marched against it but we do hear leaders from that party also shaping public discourse the far right party saying for example that headscarf girls and knife wielding men are relying on government support and people are tolerating that so the discourse goes

on but the fact is on the ground i think there is a much clearer sense that racism cannot and will not be tolerated melinda crane did obvious chief political correspondent thank you very much. i just want the once greatest aviation tragedies and mysteries and now four years after it went missing malaysian authorities are calling off the search for lost malaysian airlines flight m h three seventy in march two thousand and fourteen the boeing aircraft disappeared over the south indian ocean it was on route from kuala lumpur to beijing with two hundred and thirty nine people on board most of them chinese nationals the solution for the missing jets turned into the largest and most expensive evasion hunt in history australia and china jointed scarring and area of one hundred and twenty thousand square kilometers all that was retrieved what a few pieces of debris that washed up on the coast of africa the risk that the

know state of the acknowledged has still going up and he has raised a lot of questions i believe that there is that guy you need to go back to the growing boarding greek graduate and reinvest all the information that we have on any seventy two days anything has been may still look to now and how hopeful are you that it is read reopen this investigation i hope it will you have to remain hopeful and we continue to do all that we can expand remember right airing of grievances in the press and reminding the flying public that. it's not found we cannot prevent this from happening again millions of people who think that this guy. means just vanishing into thin air and grace is something of a difficult time for you how are relative of other passengers in law said how do you feel about how malaysian authorities dealt with this tragedy. it has been
1:14 pm
mishandled it has not been dealt with sanity in my opinion for the last four years we hoped for advance treatment of their relatives read the new government and military into the now but we ought to be the more i mean we were getting with it he will be more open to speaking to us and giving us this part of the investigation and search for the missing airlines sort of incident on. the on this elicit a federal speculation as to what happened to the plane how important is it for you and other family members to know exactly what happened so that you get a you can get some sense of closure we believe that the plane is not a problem that there will. ever broaching the subject of closure know everybody even eighteen years but as the years have rolled on we believe that more than our closure this is important for that for aviation d.q. we believe that we need to prevent this from happening again because we don't think
