6:02 pm
climate change gender equality and the ongoing dispute over u.s. tariffs on steel and aluminum imports not of them may be another topic up for discussion could see donald trump before leaving for canada he called for russia to be readmitted to the g. seven after it was expelled of the annexation of crimea. right here should be in this meeting why are we having a meeting without russia being in the meeting i would recommend and it's up to them but russia should be in the me to get to be a part of it you know whether you like it or not and it may not be politically correct but we have a world to run at the g seven which used to be the g eight they threw russia out they should let russia come back in because we should have russia at the negotiating. deluca correspondent naaman is at the summit in quebec city welcome alexander what startled trump are trying to achieve.
6:03 pm
doesn't trump is expected and there contentions summits here he is facing a lot of criticism and he doesn't like the prospect of being cornered by our leaders who will be trying to convince him to change his positions on many issues particularly on trade so he does what he normally does in such situations he's trying to distract the attention from these disputed issues and to add another controversial topic to the conversation and by doing so he is also showing that he doesn't think of backing down he would like to double down at the same time by talking about russia about his upcoming summit in singapore the meeting with the north korean regime leader kim jong un he's also trying to send a signal to the u.s. allies here saying that this meeting here in canada is not as important as they may

think and he can always turn to our partners such as russia or china so what reaction has there been to his comeuppance. interestingly it was still new prime minister of the anti-establishment populist governments of italy concert who was the ones who backed donald trump he tweeted that it is a good idea that it will be in the interest of everyone to have russia rejoin the group and by doing so he is breaking with he's a european union partners and apparently he tweeted this statement between meetings with european commission president and european council president which is quite usual those men told us during a press conference that this is of course not the official european union stance on russia because nothing has changed on the ground because russia is still in
6:05 pm
violation of the international law after the it's an exaggeration of crimea and stay with us alexander we will speak more in just a moment i think it's worth remembering that tensions as i was on to was saying were already high and the war of words going on on twitter before the summit even started. this time around canada's prime minister justin trudeau angered president trump ever since trump walked into the g seven schoolyard he's been upsetting the other kids trudeau said he wasn't going to be pushed around on toast the idea that we are somehow a national security threat to the united states is quite frankly a thoughtful and acceptable trump retaliated on twitter he doesn't bring up the fact of the charges up to three hundred percent on dairy hurting our farmers killing our agriculture he said seeing his friends trudeau taking the punches france's president mark wrong delivered a lecture on the importance of continuity in international relationships would you
6:06 pm
say today that president trump doesn't care at all maybe but nobody amongst us is forever and so are countries the commitments we've taken are bigger than us. then it's right to make it clear that trump was the most unpopular kid in school the american president may not mind being isolated but neither do we mind signing a six country agreement if need be not to be outdone trump shot back against what he called the e. using canada's massive trade tariffs a non-monetary trade barriers not long after this brawl the white house announced the trump meeting japanese prime minister shinzo abbay would be leaving the g. seven summit early possibly to avoid a shadow will debate on climate change and the environment reports suggest he already considered staying away from the summit altogether let's go back to his hunter for nominee in quebec so alexandra it's early days in this summit but we're looking at a six one that communique at the end of this or is there something that g seven

leaders can unite around. and try to get out of. it is that at issue seven leaders likely to find any common ground. now it does look like we have lost lions to canada but more at the top of the next hour it was a time for fun at the g. seven summit in quebec to new york now the united nations general assembly that has voted for germany and for other nations to become nonpermanent members of the security council given the world's fourth largest economy a voice that diplomacy is top table. getting a first in the door of the u.n. security council for another two years will give germany the chance to get more
6:08 pm
serious about a promise it keeps making to take on more responsibility in the world. in the security council we will have to take a clear starts all big conflicts in the world are discussed there as a member we will have to have a position. in the current climate of growing political uncertainty this is likely to require putting more resources where germany says it's parties are. that actually means we need to commit troops to peacekeeping and that we need to have a coherent strategy when faced with difficult challenges such as syria so now both strategy and resolve appear to be lacking in berlin germany didn't take part in the airstrikes its allies france britain and the us nor want in response to the last chemical weapons attack in syria once again it was seen as sitting on the fence on
6:09 pm
a key strategic issue welcoming the very military action chancellor merkel had refused to take part in. these kind of instances of incoherence that will we will be put on the spot once when the security council ferland rejoins the un in a circle as a testing time the fight of donald trump against multilateralism and into tuition multilateral institutions. from a turning point of view. this estrus germany sees more europe as an antidote to this attack on multilateralism much german chancellor angela merkel proposes giving up nonpermanent national seats among each hour lies in favor of european seats in the security council with e.u. nations still refusing to agree amongst themselves that they are all in the same boat when it comes to foreign policy macko has a lot to prove in new york the question now is whether germany will be able to
6:10 pm
translate its considerable soft power into more than just words at the u.n. security council expectations are high if germany fails to deliver it may end up weakening the very multilateral institution it set out to strengthen let's talk more with james ryan all the journalist based in new york who covers the you and welcome to day to have you start with the basics what do nonpermanent members do. well germany has won with one hundred eighty four votes the chance to be a nonpermanent member on the u.n. security council again countries love getting one of these seats it's considered a prestigious position it's really a chance to sit at the top table in global diplomacy but of course when they get to that top table sometimes it can be a slightly disappointing experience of the countries involved because of course the real power in the u.n. security council has been carved in stone these past seven decades so the five
6:11 pm
permanent members the u.s. britain france china and russia have a lot more power than the other ten countries who sit in the same chamber as them for two years they've got this thing called veto and countries that are joining the council like all these other nonpermanent members germany south africa the dominican republican in the media who take their seats on january the twenty nineteen they don't have the veto they do have a little bit of clout of course they get to cost their votes on these big international issues from syria and yemen the wars there the global effort to combat terrorism and of course the un's big peacekeeping missions in places like south sudan mali and the democratic republic of congo so what can germany bring to that table given that the security council has been fast and united in place. well the german foreign minister is over in new york and he's been talking about
6:12 pm
exactly this issue heiko months of course. the key issue that he says the reason for voting for germany why one so many votes he says the council has become increasingly deadlocked and he says it's the job of the elected members like germany is now to build bridges between these great palace and. deadlock is this key word that comes up time and time again at the u.n. security council because when it comes to the crunch the top body in world affairs has been unable to act on global crises and this always boils down to the core interests of these veto wielding big permanent members typically the u.s. russia and china and when it comes to one of their core interests it might be israel for example for the united states the u.s. always seems to be willing to call states veto and stop any action against them and likewise russia extends the same courtesy to its allies for example president bashar al assad of syria and so the role that germany sees itself as playing the
6:13 pm
role of the nonpermanent member is that perhaps trying to get in between these great powers and see if there's any way a bargain can be struck and so perhaps vetoes don't need to be carved and that the u.n. security council is able to become a more effective global mechanism i'm talking to james rival in new york thank you . but take a look at some of the other stories making news around the world officials in the gaza strip say at least three palestinians have been killed and hundreds wounded in renewed protests on israel's border israeli army fired tear gas and live bullets in an attempt to dispel the crowds israel accuses hamas of using the process to try to breach the border a process to say they want to draw attention to that diet humanitarian situation. with r.c. say about six hundred homes have been swallowed by lava flows on hawaii's big island since a killer whale a volcano began erupting last month makes this its most destructive eruption in

hear from our sports correspondent. first germany's struggling deutsche bank is thinking about a merger as hostile as phil the chairman of the bank. has reportedly been taking shareholders temperatures about with comparison bank according to bloomberg talks have not reached a formal stage yet the two biggest german banks was said to have broken off merger negotiations two years ago speculation has grown about a possible marriage of the two since private equity company service capital took a share in both banks. and let's bring in early bonsai financial correspondent from frankfurt. and come out two of germany's financial heavyweights the two biggest lenders getting together is that a good idea early. i think it is least according to most of the people i've talked to because one of their number one problems is cost and they're way
6:18 pm
above what comparable banks in europe or in the international realm are having and if they merge then of course they could reduce costs drastically much more than they can by themselves they're already restructuring slashing thousands of jobs but together this process would be accelerated accentuated and it would help them but probably yield more profit the downside is there are would be jobs getting lost and integrating a merger is always difficult not guaranteed to be successful in the end because of the people involved it's the further evening here in europe just wrap up the week for us how was it. it was a lively week besides deutsche bank and come out funk there was a merger talk with the unit credit and societe generale two big european banks they

a few problems having the last at last week's friendly in austria injuries are also a worry. it's not the news jimmy fans wanted to hear midfielder medhat isil has been ruled out of the saudi arabia game but the team hope he will be back soon. the problem can you don't just say it's just a bruise on the name but you don't want to take any unnecessary risks he's been doing some sprints so i assume it won't be an issue for the world cup. goalkeeper manual noya looks in good shape after making his comeback from nine months out following a broken foot in last week's friendly defeat to australia jerome bowen singh's five problem is also improving the world champions are back home in germany after their italian training camp. we've laid the queues in the venue for the saudi arabia game before both sides fire off to russia. the saudis are gearing up for their fifth

world cup they've been picked as jimmy's final warm up opponents because their style can be compared to mexico and south korea we face the germans later this month in the world cup group stage. but. it's an excellent opportunity for us to take home one of the best footballing nations in the world. and one of the favorites to win the world cup. i doubt it and will be. both teams hope the weather in later queues and behaves for kick off well a kick off in just over an hour all of a moody is outside the stadium. what should germany fans be looking out for. well i think the fans arriving here at the bahrain or in leverkusen will be i will have a lot of questions but we'll be looking at two players in particular we heard about
6:25 pm
manuel neuer in the report there he is a player who as we had missed out a lot of this season through injury back just at the right time but still he's he's missed so much football every game for him at the moment is a test both of his fitness and of his form and the same goes for marco royce you know he also missed a lot of this season through injury and he's like no he's back at just the right time but his direct replacement or most direct replacement lyrics when i was left out of the squad so it's really important for germany that he hits for now that he's back to germany against the saudi arabia who will also be at the world cup what can we expect from the well yeah and it's a really important game for saudi arabia because they of course open the world cup against the hosts russia next thursday so they need to take something positive from this game going into the start of the tournament they are one of the lowest ranked teams at the tournament and they've not been on
6:26 pm
a good run of form recently it has to be said so i think win for them tonight is probably out the question but they need to take something positive and possibly the man to give them that would be mohamed al salami he was the joint top goal scorer in world cup qualifying with sixteen level with bae and front man robert leaven dusky so he is perhaps the man to cause germany a few problems tonight for the germany did lose to austria last week so how important is it for them to win tonight. very important because it's not just the austria game which was of course disappointing but germany haven't won in the last five games now they have played some of the favorites for the world cup some very good teams in that time the likes of spain and france and brazil but still it's disappointing for germany to be on this win this streak i think they need to bring back that feel good factor they need to have this kind of positive experience going into the world cup no title defender wants to go into the next tournament on a winless streak so it is really important to give them back some of that feel good
6:27 pm
