this is d.w. news live from berlin u.s. president donald trump clashes with his allies over trade at the g. seven summit he condemns unfair trade practices and then proposes removing all tariffs and barriers to trade security seven members on. my us waiter welcome to the program following a two day summit of g seven nations canadian prime minister just entered says all

seven countries have signed a final communique that's despite trade tensions with the u.s. he also said a trade war would harm workers in the u.s. and canada. i know you'll know that we had some strong firm conversations on trade and specifically american tariffs i reiterated to president trump that these tariffs threaten to harm industry and workers on both sides of our border i stand ready to work closely with the president to resolve this dispute swiftly but as i have consistently said i will always protect canadian workers and canadian interests. and joining me now is our correspondent claire richardson in quebec city following the g. seven summit so claire we did in fact see a signed statement after this you seven summit despite the tensions on the ground where have these leaders found common ground. i think they found common ground in wanting to save face and project
11:02 pm
a united message that this was not just a summit that drove a wedge more deeply between the u.s. and its partners now we heard we just heard there at them saying that they had come to that he had raised the issue of tariffs with donald trump referring of course it to the steel and aluminum tariffs that went into effect at the end of last month and this has been something that has been a real sore point throughout the summit the fact that u.s. allies see it as unfair trading practices canada went as far as to call these tariffs illegal and they have of course said that they are going to impose retaliatory it tariffs in order to try and maintain some semblance of fair trading practices so in some ways we're really seeing them kick the can down the road a little bit that these are going to be talks that are going to need to be hashed out in much more detail in the future and instead we're just seeing after this summit a kind of a blanket statement of unity to suggest that it wasn't such a disaster. player as you said the big issue on the table was of course trade in

these tariffs that the group of seven did agree to a rules based international trading system but we did hear that president trump camp objected to that wording what's the real issue here. it's interesting that in the past of his kind of language has been absolutely standard nothing controversial about it at all but it fits into the problem that donald trump views the entire existing international rules based order as problematic he sees the u.s. as having got a bad deal in many trade agreements in anything that involves international partners that was negotiated by his predecessors and so he's really coming out this you know he's really good at picking apart these agreements and objecting to the kind of language that we have seen as a foundation of the international system for the past several decades now we saw that justin trudeau was very positive throughout the final press conference despite

as we've been talking about these trade tensions with the u.s. really hanging over the summit let's take a listen to what he had to say on that at the time which is the fund. uncertainty. our world has to deal with meetings like this will take ever greater importance they give us the opportunity to join forces and sometimes to settle their disputes facing the great challenges we have today countries which have great economic success need to show a common front and promote the values that are at the very root of our success i will leave the summit inspired by the discussions in which i participated as convinced as ever of the need to work together to meet our common challenges. so president trump left the summit early he said to prepare for another summit in singapore this time with kim jong un but did his early departure seem to make

a difference in the outcome of the g seven meeting. and that's right he left early skipping half of the day on saturday today which in many ways was seen as a snub but to the leaders here to some of the united states' closest allies and indicated that he was more interested in meeting with the north korean dictator than he was with smoothing over tensions i mean that quote we just heard did seem like a bit of a dig at donald trump saying that there are enormous issues in the world today that require a united international approach and that the united states increasingly isolated stance is not helpful he didn't refer to them specifically but of course over the past few months we've seen the united states withdraw from the iran nuclear deal we saw donald trump say that the united states would leave the paris climate accord and to really test the waters with a lot of relationships diplomatic relationships that had been taken as
11:06 pm
a given that the united states would stand behind its allies and be good for its word when it signed on to international agreements are very clear richardson for us in quebec city where he's been following the g. seven thank you very much for your reporting. and as we said divisions have been running high at the g. seven summit in canada which just wrapped up as we heard u.s. president donald trump first repeated his railings against unfair trade practices just to propose only then just a proposed removing all tariffs and barriers to trade shortly before then leaving the meeting early he missed the group discussion on climate change as he departed for singapore for next week's summit with north korea's kim jong on. the battle lines were drawn early in québec. six leaders together for breakfast while the seventh turned up late a sure sign of the esteem in which he holds the summit. the advancement of

women more protection for the oceans and climate many of the topics that canadian prime minister justin trudeau wanted to address seemed to hold little interest for donald trump instead he used the meeting to complain once more about the opponent unfair trade practices the u.s. faces and to threaten the other leaders. because you see we have a tremendous trade imbalance so when we try and bring our piece up a little bit so that it's not so bad and then they go up right the difference is they do so much more business with us than we do with them that we can't lose that you understand we can't listen to the talks that are actually going well he did before leaving the building. five hours before the summit sufficiently and. in his absence the remaining leaders worked on a joint declaration to commit to

a reduction of targets and subsidies and to reform the world trade organization. very openly the devil is in the details which is why many of the current trade talks including those with the u.s. will continue despite this joint declaration and that's why this very open discussion was necessary. but may not be very convincing for the nearby g. seven protesters they accuse the leaders of the world's seven largest economies of an auction taking a company trip to canada instead of taking care of the world's many problems. and now to some of the other stories making news around the world as the g seven leaders wrap up their meeting in canada chinese president xi jinping opened a two day regional summit of the shanghai cooperation organization or as c.e.o. in qingdao attendees included russia and iran the opening ceremony featured
