this is deja vu dude live from berlin donald trump arrives in singapore the us president steps off air force one on what he calls a mission of peace he's there for tuesday's historic talks with north korean leader kim jong un who arrived in singapore earlier today. so coming up is this is the defining image of the g. seven sometimes german chancellor angela merkel chastising trump or maybe it's this photograph from the u.s. president cool and collected during photos capture an acrimonious split as leaders

meet to canada. welcome to the program i met her meant u.s. president donald trump has arrived in singapore for tuesday's highly anticipated summit with north korean leader kim jong un trumps plane landed at a military base after traveling from the g. seven summit into beck jim arrived earlier today the summit will be the first time that a north korean leader has met with a sitting u.s. president it's expected that they'll discuss junks nuclear arsenal as well as potential efforts to formally end the korean war but the north korean leader almost never travels outside his home country which is one of the reasons that since the moment here arrived in singapore he's been the focus of intense interest. flashing lights motorcades all the usual hallmarks that accompany

a visiting head of state except this couldn't be more unusual north korea's leader kim jong il has arrived in singapore ahead of talks with u.s. president donald trump it's the first summit of its kind between a north korean leader and a sitting u.s. president singapore's foreign minister he met came out his plane says both sides are showing quote a desire a willingness to escape the constraints that have applied for the last seven decades that is since the has still ities of the korean war ended the meeting is costing singapore around twenty million dollars a price the prime minister says the country is willing to pay hopes are high that the trump kids meeting will be a game changer for the region. security is tight the teams are preparing all eyes will be on the two men to see what they will be able to achieve in their talks the u.s. president has called this a one time shot at peace. i know our correspondent bus you know how it is on the

ground in singapore he joins us now. this meeting isn't going to happen until tuesday what happens between now and then what we know that president trump is scheduled to meet the prime minister of singapore here tomorrow something that can draw on has already done today that of course is part of the protocol here of singapore being the host to this summit now other than that we don't really know what's on the schedule of both leaders until they meet here on tuesday morning that. the expectations are very high for these talks i'm sure a lot of preparations will go into them how likely is it that the two sides are going to reach a concrete agreement this week. that's really hard to say president trump tried to downplay the expectations in the run up
5:04 pm
to the summit saying that he thought this was more or he thought of this more as a as a meet and greed sort of occasion an opportunity for himself and kim jong un to get to know each other and he also said that he would know president trump would know within the first minute of sitting down with kim if kim was serious about making a deal or not and then of course he also said that if so then this would be the he considers this to be the first step in a long process a process of course in which the u.s. requires north korea to give up their nuclear weapons and north korea in turn once the u.s. to lift the economic sanctions on north korea and to guarantee the security of the kim regime now that's all those are all things that require
5:05 pm
a lot of trust on both sides so that's not something that can be done overnight and it's not presumably it's not something that can be achieved. well it looks like we have lost our correspondent bastian heartache in singapore it was great to get what insights we could from him well expectations of the singapore summit have overshadowed the conclusion of the g seven meeting in canada but there was an unusually acrimonious and to the annual event that brings together leaders of seven leading duster all democracies after two days of intense talks all seven leaders indorsed final communique seemingly finding common ground on the need for rules based trade but then president trump withdrew his indorsement with nothing less than a tweet it's the first time a g seven gathering has ended without a jointly agreed statement but despite the very visible signs of just for the u.s.
5:06 pm
president did proclaim the gathering a success i will say it was not contentious what was strong was the language that this cannot go on but the relationships are very good whether it be president mccrone or or with justin we have just endured a really good job i think the relationships were outstanding. all right i have joined now by our political correspondent thomas sparrow here in the studio as well as our u.s. correspondent in washington costs and phenomena joining us from their costs and i will start with you it has been a real zigzag course from trump why did he lash out at trader after he had already agree with the other leaders there and how is this change of heart coming across in the u.s. . well first of all the chief economic advisor of the dawn
5:07 pm
trump larry kudlow today trump reacted like this because just introduce of the canadian prime minister and host of the g. seven summit had the traits don't buy it basically standing his ground and announcing that canada would retaliate with tariffs of its own against the u.s. because on the trunks steel and aluminum tariffs and apparently the white house sees this as an expression of bad faith on the behalf of the canadian prime minister and clearly also kudlow said this could weaken donald trump's position in the upcoming talks with kim jong singapore so that shows clearly where the priorities for this white house they focus on the summit in singapore and the g. seven summit for them was basically a nuisance and a distraction right well thomas the other six nations in the g seven felt this was an important event they decided to stick with this final joint communique how are
5:08 pm
europeans reacting to the surprise move from trump to sort of you know withdraw his support well essentially saying that they'll try and stick to get the six countries particularly the european countries there but also with other countries that share their interests and values they have been plenty of reactions to donald trump's decision one for example coming from german foreign minister. he reacted also or not on twitter saying that you can destroy an incredible amount of trust very quickly with a tweet and then adding again that it's more important that europe stands together and defends its interests even more offensively and we've also heard for example from the french presidency also a very strong statement there saying that international cooperation cannot be dictated by what they described as fits of anger and throwaway remarks so what we're seeing is very strong remarks both in the united states and also from some of the other countries and that such and the. is a big problem when we're talking about trying to solve international problems or
5:09 pm
international conflicts are strong statements coming from all sides but you know pictures can sometimes tell a thousand words we do have a revealing photo which was put out by the german government shows chancellor angela merkel in a surprisingly imposing position leaning into war trump as photo went viral on social media here it is it was actually one of the most popular posts ever on the chancellor's instagram feed it garnered something over forty thousand likes and counting the picture was a big hit on twitter as well some users say that there would be no better illustration of the current global situation and this right here but there were also some other pictures which were doing the rounds put up by other members of the g seven summits one by kong's team putting him in the middle of the picture another by trump's team putting him in the middle of the pictures all smiles going around. unfortunately didn't have those pictures on the screen just a moment you know what i mean these kinds of stories that you find out from
5:10 pm
a picture are they telling an honest story well they are telling at least a story by the ten different stories you have different versions of a same event as we if we specifically look at the picture that we were able to show that's a picture that was published by the german government and it's important to stress that it was published by the german government is it tries of these to portray donald trump on one side and the european leaders on the other side i think it's particularly important to mention that this was not to be published by a photo agency it was a specific message that the german government wanted to present by publishing this photo just as some of the other governments also tried to present their own views on this by publishing their own images i mean carson i want to put this over to you as well this six on one everybody ganging up on trump sort of image which i guess was being projected by this event how did that play in the united states perhaps
5:11 pm
that plays well. that depends on whom you talk to those people who are still very much interested in the rules based world although who stood think that the u.s. should have a better relationship with traditional allies than with their adversaries they are of course worried by this by the symbolism of this of the us being isolated apparently to some extent if we take this picture at face value of course but there are others also who think that this is a great picture because the look at donald trump's face is not easy to to decipher is he angry is he just amused is he boortz so for them it shows donald trump doesn't care about everybody on speed rating him he's sticking to his guns and it makes him look strong that is the other interpretation that is there what has been said from all sides left and right is that this was a pretty bold powell move by anglo-american social media team yeah and this sort of
5:12 pm
donald trump heading out on a limb was also illustrated by his request saying that russia should be allowed allowed back into the g seven fold without any kind of prior consultation with his allies let's listen to a clip from justin trudeau reacting to that request from true. i said very simply that it is not something we even remotely interested in looking at at this time to have russia return to the g. seven. right we are back karsten. why is it that trump is so keen on having russia back at the table you know trump and russia are often mentioned in close proximity with each other. that is true and looks a bit suspicious but i think this is simply an expression of donald trump's a worldview he doesn't see the g seven as a previous u.s.
5:13 pm
presidents have seen it the g. seven was always a meeting of the seven biggest industrialized and democratic nations russia was a pod of the g eight well that was kind of an expression of the hope or expectation that russia also would become democratic and a more or less normal country from the western point of view but russia on the putin has decided it doesn't want to be just a normal country wants to be an empire with its own sphere of influence and it has become an authoritarian state almost a semi dictatorship so donald trump doesn't care about that for him all the nations are the same to additional allies or foes and he's just interested in what he gets out of his transactional foreign policy america first and he doesn't care about things like human rights and democracy and so on and this is the expression of this so for him if you talk to the big guys then russia and china should be at the table right we will leave it right there carson on naaman in washington as well as thomas ferro here in the studio thanks so much for joining us.
