a north korean leader trump has been building expectations calling the meeting a one time shot for peace and he says he'll know within the first minute of meeting him if a deal with north korea is possible. from. two friends the road to the historic summit in singapore has been more than a little rocky. an exchange of insults followed after north korea repeatedly tested long range missiles infuriating the u.s. president their rocket man little rocket man rocket man is a sick puppy. when pyongyang in the instant august last year it was close to developing a missile capable of reaching the u.s. trump responded with a threat of biblical proportions. they will be met with fire and fury. like the world has never seen. kim jong un

oncet by calling the u.s. president and mentor need to range don't charge. and the war of words culminated in a contest over who had the biggest nuclear button. but then in february a change of cheering on the ice between north and south korea thought at the winter olympics n.p.r. news extended an invitation to donald trump i'll be meeting with kim jong un in the coming weeks at the end of april the leaders of north and south korea met for the first time kim jong un crossed into the south. and when jay in crossed into the north they agreed to have continued clear eyes in the korean peninsula. and they pyongyang extended another all of branch and released three american prisoners i think he did this because i really think he wants to do stop thing
10:04 am
again two weeks later kim jong un appeared to make good on a promise detonating parts of his only no nuclear testing site. then washington threw a curve ball citing hostility and recent north korean comments. decided to terminate the planned summit in singapore in june twelfth first just one day later and now the turnaround the meeting might be back on trump's explanation. everybody you know that. after a flurry of diplomatic activity including a visit by a top north korean envoy to the white house plans for the historic summit. now the world is waiting to see who they're in the first face to face meeting the two leaders can move on from that for time rich rick and produce meaningful results . following the trump camp summit for us in singapore is own boss dan hard to bust
10:05 am
and we're just hours away now from the start of this much anticipated summit both sides are coming to the table with expectations what are they exactly well i don't know trump obviously walking into the summit demanding complete verifiable and irreversible denuclearization on the side of north korea and north korea has agreed to talk about the nuclearization which made the summit even possible but it's not sure that both sides are actually talking about the same thing when they when they say denuclearization now the u.s. of course wants north korea to scrap its entire nuclear program and north korea on the other hand is talking about a complete denuclearization of the korean peninsula and that would imply that the united states also would have to give up their capabilities in south korea to deliver nuclear weapons so that's probably going to be one of the contentious issues at the summit tomorrow now apart from that north korea is also demanding
10:06 am
security guarantees for the kim jong un regime and also an easing of economic sanctions by by the united states and the world community on north korea so they can develop their economy so a lot to talk about at that summit tomorrow various expectations from both of these leaders but there is expectations too on the korean peninsula what would some kind of denuclearize asian deal mean for both north and south koreans. well any kind of denuclearization or peace deal that might eventually happen would have very different effects depending on which part of career you're looking at if you're looking at north korea for example it's an isolated impoverished country and many people there facing food insecurity facing malnourishment so living conditions there very very dire for many people so if if sanctions were to be were to be
10:07 am
lifted economic sanctions and more trade would be happening with north korea then that would improve the economy and eventually that will trickle down to regular north koreans and improve their lives at least that's the hope now for south korea it's a different situation of course being economically very very far developed but they've been living with the threat it was with this with this threat from north korea for for for so many years more than sixty years and if you take seoul for example a metropolitan area of more than twenty million people just fifty kilometers or so from the north korean border so well in range of conventional north korean artillery you can imagine the kind of situation the kind of threat scenario that people in south korea have been living with and younger south koreans don't know any other any other lives any other situation so that could that could that could be relieved in taken away from them that would be of course a burden off their shoulders now also in south korea there are many families that
10:08 am
were separated by the division of korea and when i was in seoul i spoke to a man who has family in north korea whom he has never met have a look at this report. on the fuel the photographs in a couple of letters that's the only proved sign has that he has relatives somewhere in north korea and it would put them in danger to show their faces on television. rather. his older brother to unsign tells me fought for south korea in the korean war almost seven decades ago chunks of bach was taken prisoner by the north the family was told he had been killed then sixty years after seeing his brother for the last time chang sign received a letter from north korea from his brother delivered through a contact in china that was ten years ago it made sense and happy and sad at the same time. when i saw the photo i couldn't
10:09 am
tell the world my brother but you can see how depressed he looks rather than actually i remember him as such a cheerful person. you know. his brother passed away shortly after chang signed got the letter with but he left behind a family of his own. hopes that with thaw in relations between north and south and the upcoming summit he might finally get the chance to meet his relatives. with as i get older my desire to meet them is growing stronger i want to get to know that side of my family now with the summer no seems more likely we'll have a chance to meet which i'm still not sure if i should trust the politicians but i just can't help but hope it will finally have. could be there's a. chance time isn't the only one in south korea getting his hopes up.
10:10 am
many here believe that the summit will produce a positive outcome maybe even paving the way for a peace treaty to finally end the korean war sixty five years after the last shot was fired and more and more south koreans are even changing their mind about north korea's dictator kim jong un and so isn't the t.v. . always seem to. get what he said and what he was going to some in the past probably smarter than i thought i got the impression he's actually leading the country should sort of turn to the right and was. told. the inner korean summit changed many people's opinions about him. but that doesn't change the fact that it oppressive communist regime.
10:11 am
is the biggest issue during the meeting as a career i have the impression that he only has the will to give up the weapon to say i hope of the u.s. or what's going on summit two or three. good agreements just. kidding smallest. all i expect somebody was really wasn't based on the inner screen somebody a few weeks ago i would like to hear something great such as a declaration to end the korean war. so my boss was because. sometimes john sign and his wife come to the national cemetery in seoul to find his brother's name on the wall of missing soldiers. even though chance a book is no longer missing they don't want his name deleted solo was his home they say they hope that maybe one day his children in north korea can come here to.
10:12 am
hopes for family reunification ahead of the summit thank you boston for that report we'll keep in touch with you throughout the day of course from singapore ahead of the upcoming meeting between trump and kim jong thank you that was in the other stories making news around the world around three thousand people have rallied in the romanian capital bucharest to protest moves by the government to dismiss the country's chief anti corruption prosecutor the rally came a day after supporters of the center left government marched against alleged abuses by the anti corruption agency. three gulf states have pledged two and a half billion u.s. dollars in aid to jordan in a bid to help the kingdom overcome a fiscal crisis the government may introduce a new austerity plan after its recent savings measure prompted a widespread public protest. a fire has ripped through
10:13 am
a warehouse in iraq where ballot papers were being stored ahead of a recount authorities were preparing to retaliate some ten million votes following allegations of electoral fraud prime minister hyderabadi claimed the blaze was part of a deliberate plot to harm iraq's democracy. now so the fall out from the weekend's g. seven summit in canada that meeting of the world's leading industrial nations unraveling after president trump withdrew his support for the group's joint communiqué german chancellor angela merkel has now given her take on events in a rare one on one t.v. interview she describes trump's move as quote sobering and a bit depressing and commentating on trump's threat of trade tariffs she says germany won't be taken for a ride it was the image from the g seven summits in canada that tent everyone talking what have the german chancellor been saying to the u.s. president what was she thinking and what was he thinking that photo was taken
10:14 am
before donald trump withdrew his support for the g seven is joined statement on international trade and it seems that decision has changed everything. in an unusual move chancellor merkel used to german political talk show to vent her frustration at the way things turned out. i worked hard for a compromise we struggled with it for a long time and then afterwards there was drawn so to speak by a tweet is of course sobering and a bit depressing. and all. despite trump's threats of reprisals the chancellor didn't hold back on why germany and the e.u. should apply retaliatory tariffs. some of we have prepared our
10:15 am
countermeasures against the tariffs that the us president placed on aluminum and steel which we consider unlawful under the terms of the w.t. oh. we're not going to let ourselves be taken for a ride we're also going to act. and while defending the g seven the german leader also took the opportunity to call for a more united europe we have to ask ourselves where we can act on line that of course means new responsibilities for europe and it especially means that we in europe need to be loyal to ourselves angular merkel has never had the easiest of relations with donald trump. his decision to disrupt the g. seven will only have made things would. discuss this further we have political correspondent thomas farrow joining us from our parliamentary studio here and berlin thomas the chancellor giving a one on one t.v.
10:16 am
interview that's not a common event why did she get in front of the cameras after this g seven meeting your right to be it is not a common event in fact is a very rare event that i'm going to hold decides to participate in one of these talk shows she only tends to do these kinds of talk shows when she feels the need to explain the german public some big political developments she did that for example at the height of the refugee crisis she did that for example when she explained why she wanted to run again. he's doing it again obviously not a spot of this big political development which is the g. seven summit on the fact that the u.s. seems to be going in a very different direction compared to the u.s. it's traditional allies and that was why i'm going to mccall decided to go to this . talk show to give her impressions not only on the g. seven summit but also on developments here in germany like all the recent scandals on migration that we've also been covering here and you know but the news now as
10:17 am
after merkel gave this interview u.s. president trump went on a bit of a twitter tear he had this to say germany pays one per cent g.d.p. towards nato while we pay four percent of a much larger g.d.p. has anybody believe that makes sense we protect europe great financial loss and then get unfairly clobbered on trade changes coming thomas a new tweet but the same message from trump about european allies doing more does he have a point here. well it's not a new message as you yourself say in fact the u.s. ambassador to germany richard grenell say in one of his very first interviews that that would be his number one issue here in germany to convince the german government to speed up support for for nato that's a priority also for donald trump and in fact i'm going to michael yesterday during that interview said that in a way trump was right when he talks about these differences in nato spending germany has already committed itself to increasing its own expenditure regarding
10:18 am
nato but again there's a difference in the way they want to do it the u.s. would like germany to do it in a much faster way than germany is actually prepared to do d w political correspondent thomas ferro thank you very much hard here now with a look at the economic fallout of the g. seven that's right and as we just saw tensions over trade really at the heart of the meeting of g seven leaders at the weekend with donald trump accusing his counterparts of exploiting the united states rising in the new york times times advisor on trade now said that even german contact trees in the u.s. would just simply plants designed to avoid tariffs while the real value was still created by comic is in germany here's what he said on fox news sunday on the issue . germany has tariffs on autos four times higher than our tariffs on the twenty one german imports here and they sell us three times as many cars as
10:19 am
we sell lamb so on the issue alone we have allies strategically but when it comes to these trade disputes these allies basically are robbing us blind the president is not going to put up with that. so the white house is saying the car industry is one area of us is clearly being taken advantage of but doesn't the trump ministration really have a point let's have a look it's true us duty on car imports from the e.u. is two point five percent while the e.u. leave ten percent. on imports from the u.s. so that's quite a big difference there but and there's always a but isn't there those figures only tell half the story when it comes to s.u.v.s and pick up cars for example the u.s. car industry industries main source of income e.u. cars coming into the u.s. are subject to twenty five percent tariffs the u.s. car industry profits here are from a much lower ten percent that the euro believe is on ford or cadillacs coming into
10:20 am
the e.u. and that twenty five percent tariff dates back all the way to nine hundred sixty three it was known as the chicken tax because it came in response to tires that france and west germany at the time imposed on imports of u.s. chicken just to show you that trades attention can have quite a long history and can actually be quite weird when you look at them closely at it a little earlier i spoke to york tammy's chief economist spungen frankfurt and i asked him whether the e.u. should now respond in kind to u.s. trade tariffs. i'm not so sure whether such a retaliation policy is the right approach because we voted for the u.s. administration a minute ago they fear they are treated unfairly and this is their perception and when it comes to when it comes to defense expenditure they have a point the western allies in europe they have been promising for years to
10:21 am
raise their defense spending to two percent of g.d.p. and germany last year only spent one point two percent and now germany started to move but not to raises two to two percent but only to one point five percent. i think if the better strategy would be a strategy of corporation raising defense expenditure quickly to two percent of g.d.p. which is would be in our best interest because we should be interest of being able to defense or serve and secondly not to raise but to cut about to cut tariffs for example current terrors of the european union why do they why does the europe would not cut them from the content per cent to the mere two and a half percent which is yes the money is the money and i think such a strategy of cooperation could bring more because then president trump of the united states can go to the voters and say well. this was a good deal for the united states their claim of their chief economist come out
10:22 am
strong speaking to me earlier. well let's check in on the markets with jenelle dimon out of the final so he's change general market reaction has been pretty mild is from teaching markets to take it on the chin well mostly i think he's taught them to be unsurprised when he reiterate signals that he's already made now markets have been following this trade saga since the beginning of the year when he first impose tariffs on solar panels and washing machines then that was followed by the steel the louvin tariffs and he's indicated that he was going to go after european car makers so that's where we still are that's also worth noting that markets are looking towards a market moving week anyway following the g. seven summit they're looking towards north korea summit today and tomorrow on wednesday they're expecting a rate decision from the u.s. fed and on thursday a monetary policy update from the e.c.b. now those could do more to affect market sentiment but it's an exciting week ahead
10:23 am
for the the markets but these markets go up and down day but trumps agenda could fundamentally change global trade as we know it especially when looking at cars that were actually the world's most traded products what are you appealing comicon saying. well mostly uncertainty about what trump really wants is dominating the discussion now if the aim is to force foreign carmakers to produce more domestically in the u.s. and thus secure more jobs in exchange for allowing the other car makers more access into an important market well that's what's already happening you have the likes of b.m.w. and v.w. and together they employ thirty thousand people more than thirty thousand people in the u.s. with another eighty thousand jobs linked to the manufacturing operations in the u.s. so it's not clear what whether this strategy will work out for donald trump in the end you know the law in frankfurt force thank you. that's

madrid open just last month the win as the dolls' seventeenth grand slam title after the match the spaniard said winning this latest one was beyond his wildest dreams. if you tell me seven eight years ago that they will be here with with do is all having this little fair with me again i will tell you that some think almost impossible but here we are now returning to our top story tomorrow's historic sit down between donald trump and kim jong un the two leaders have been circling each other from a far and it makes you wonder what their chemistry will be like when they get in a room together while if they're to look alikes or anything to go by there's absolutely nothing to worry about. bromance in singapore in the run up to the historic meeting between trump and kim these two men are getting along great. and i think. a lot of good things will come from ishtar
10:26 am
and it's going to be better for everybody better for business have good vibes about this meeting then it's going to come out good for the rest of the world and this trump is already practicing getting to the meat of the issue. after the g seven disaster in canada the mood here is good too good to be true these imitators are the spitting image is of the leaders meeting in singapore and they have some creative solutions to the problems facing the u.s. and north korea so i'm going to take some of this thread back to go through with me . i think we can we can solve the foreign and probably north korea with you greg what do you think yeah many in the crowd are fooled failing to notice teams australian accent and they don't believe that he knows they still here especially the us president for not putting the soviet here so impressed that you know with no security to you. however the summit in singapore turns out and the meeting of these
