lunch with singapore's prime minister and kim jong un takes a strong to see the sides. also coming up spain comes to the rescue of migrants on a boat in limbo in the mediterranean italy's new right wing interior minister delivering on a campaign promise had blocked the boat from entering a talian corridor and a bad day at the office for the boss of mercedes the government the german government orders him to recall almost a quarter of a million diesel engine conked their cheating software corrected. i'm sorry kelly welcome to the program the historic summit between u.s. president donald trump and north korea's leader kim jong un is about to get started in the latest twist in the drama filled lead up to tuesday's talks trump has said that he will be leaving singapore early because new. getting rid of north korea's

nuclear weapons have moved quote more quickly than expected the abrupt change in trump's schedule came shortly after the secretary of state my pompei o had seemed to lower expectations for the meeting and in the meantime the two leaders have been taking in the sights of singapore time for a selfie kim jong un hadn't been seen leaving his hotel since shortly after his arrival on sunday but he decided to go for a night time to or if singapore just hours before his historic summit with donald trump. singapore has designated certain parts of the city as special event areas barricades and high security checkpoints keep the public out at locations like the hotels where the two leaders are staying. and of course at sentosa island the site of cup hotel where the historic meeting is scheduled to take place north korean and american security personnel conferred outside the compound as officials

from both sides met inside on monday president trump also ventured out on monday afternoon going to singapore's presidential palace for a lunch with prime minister lisi and long. as first serious statements about u.s. expectations for the summit those were left to trump's top diplomat who is with him in singapore in light of how many flimsy agreements the united states has made in previous years this president will sure ensure that no potential agreement will fail to adequately address the north korean threat. the ultimate objective we seek from diplomacy with north korea has not changed the complete verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the korean peninsula is the only outcome the united states will accept. when singapore wakes up on tuesday morning the whole world will be watching to see what comes out of the first face to face meeting
11:04 pm
between two of its most unpredictable leaders let's get the view now from washington correspondent claire richardson is following the build up to this summit and claire president trump we heard has already announced that he will be leaving the meeting earlier than planned is he lowering expectations there hi sara yes the u.s. is suggesting that things are going so well so quickly that the u.s. president doesn't need to stick stick around as long as expected but look so far we haven't seen any evidence of a concrete preliminary agreement that would achieve what we just heard secretary of state might say is the point of this meeting he says ultimately the united states wants complete and verifiable and irreversible denuclearized ation and one of the big problems here is that it's not clear that north korea and the united states even share a common definition of what that exactly means north korea has suggested that they include the entire of the united states of belittle to strike north korea from all of its overseas bases in that definition the u.s.
11:05 pm
of course wants to see nuclear weapons programs off the korean peninsula and there's so much hype around this meeting and simultaneously such low expectations that i think if trump and cam are able to hammer out any kind of agreement no matter what the substance says just anything that says that they are working together and kicking the can down the road to have future negotiations it's going to be widely lauded as a success and it's been reported that they will actually be in the room relatively alone together save you know a couple of translators who will be there president tom for his part boasting that he will know immediately whether a deal can be reached with kim are these leaders winning eclair. well north korea certainly is not winning it they will have been looking at the u.s. president's weaknesses going into this remember they've got decades of experience in manipulating american negotiators when it comes to trying to find a solution but this is part of donald trump's trademark style he's proud of the fact that he is an unconventional leader he says that it was his strong arm
11:06 pm
approach that actually brought kim jong un to the negotiating table in the first place and he says that he's going to be able to tell from his gut reaction whether kim is serious about making a deal and now he didn't win the u.s. elections from listening to experts who would certainly cast doubt on this narrative and say certainly there is so much mistrust between the u.s. and north korea that donald trump is not going to be able to smell it out right away however if he says his supporters they think that this is a show of strength and they are happy they will be watching closely to see what kind of agreement comes out of this summit and let's talk a little bit more about those supporters because we know that for example trump basically winning the presidency on the ticket of isolationism so why does he want to deal with north korea so badly what does he want out of this really. i think he really wants to show that he is able to accomplish something especially if it's something that former president barack obama was unable to accomplish we
11:07 pm
know that when obama was leaving office in the transition he told trump that north korea was one of the thorniest u.s. foreign policy problems and from what ravel in being able to to do something that obama was unable to do to have a historic face to face meeting between a sitting u.s. president and a north korean leader even if it's not something that obama would have taken up himself and he wants to see the positive press that comes out of that and we've even heard his supporters saying that he deserves a nobel prize if he's successful claire richardson with the latest on this summit thank you so much for following developments. we just want to interrupt for a moment for some breaking news that has just come in some reports from the u.s. justice department spokesperson saying that staff are quote sheltering in place amid reports of an active shooter in the building no more information at the moment we're going to continue to monitor this and get some details again that spokesperson saying that they cannot verify those reports at this hour but there are indeed reports of people sheltering in place amid reports of an active shooter

. well in the meantime now to europe where spain has offered to take in more than six hundred migrants many of them unaccompanied children stranded on a rescue ship in the mediterranean after italy in malta refused to let it dock but the ship is three days sail away from spain and supplies are now running low malta has sent food and water but the charity operating the chips ship says that it would last for only one day. after surviving the deadly mediterranean waters six hundred thirty people onboard this rescue ship caught up in a diplomatic row among them unaccompanied minors and pregnant women the aquarius drifted between israeli and multi after both countries closed their ports to the vessel and refused to take in the migrants on board on monday there was some hope for the refugees spain said it would accept the ships italy's new anti immigrant
11:09 pm
government claim the offer as a victory. interior minister and leader of the far right league party. has long demanded that the e.u. help italy more on immigration. first important sign that italy can't continue to bear this huge burden on its own. i mean it's clear the european union can't go on this way. we hope today is a new beginning. but the charity running the rescue ship has warned of the challenges in reaching the spanish port of the length it would take at least two days putting vulnerable people at risk that's why the un is continuing to put pressure on italy and malta which are much closer to let the ship dock its creation is getting more dramatic by the minute and that's why we are asking this me authorize these invocation and to leave if. the

political issues on how to manage. flows of. refugees for. cost addressed in an unwelcoming political climate the fate of the migrants aboard the aquarius is still unclear. and joining me here in the studio is florian vest fall from doctors without borders which runs a medical clinic on the stranded ship and we thank you so much for joining us this evening to talk about the situation what are you hearing from your colleagues on the aquarius what is the situation like on board the feedback we're getting from the ship is extremely concerning we have six hundred sixty people on board and number of them have been rescued from sea about forty needy drowned on saturday night when the ship capsized that some had to be resuscitate it so they remain in relative critical condition there pregnant women that people have been burned by
11:11 pm
sits in it being in a mixture of salt water and petrol which is quite a common complaint these people have and we are obviously concerned that even though these people remain stable for now we don't know what's going to happen to them or stuff on top of that the thirty people on board are also in nearing exhaustion because they've been looking after these six hundred plus people around the clock since saturday night and italy of course fused to let this vessel dock within the country what do you make of that decision. it's extremely concerning and to be honest it's hard to understand every single rescue operation that we carry out is coordinated by the italian authorities by the italian sea rescue coordination center also the fact that we picked up four hundred passengers from other ships who rescued them including a number of italian coast guard vessels we were then ordered to go towards sicily until about twenty four hours ago we were told to stop and basically are now in
11:12 pm
limbo between malta and sicily what's happening here is that politics is being conducted on the back of these people many of whom have barely escaped with their lives many of whom have gone through horrendous experiences in libyan detention camps because that's where these people are held and we really think that politics should not come into the question of helping these people so now. we understand that spain for example has offered to take the ship and so now that the ship is heading to spain well we haven't actually been officially notified by either the italian or the spanish authorities as to how we are to proceed. the spanish harbor that's been mentioned in the media is roughly one thousand three hundred kilometers away that would mean three days at sea on a ship that is not equipped to transport people over this long distances and that is beyond its full capacity so even if extra food and water can be provided this would place in intolerable burden on these six hundred people who are involved you are coping now with a nationalist government in italy
11:13 pm
a government which has refused to let this ship go to ports organizations such as your iran doctors without borders if you could just tell us about the challenges that you're facing now in this environment and how you might be able to adjust to those i think the challenge that is faced by the people on borders the key issue here and what we're seeing is really the outcome of european union policies over the past two years that have basically played into the hands of the people smugglers who put the refugees on to these see one see worthy of being used leave them to their fate this into a fact that europe has not managed and not wanted to create a safe and legal way of seeking sanctuary or seeking safety and seeking protection on european szell was the cause of this crisis and this is unfortunately but another episode in this really unspeakable european policy making and we know that this crisis has been going on for years as you've highlighted there there
11:14 pm
have been no solutions so far executed we thank you so much floor and best of all from doctors without borders joining us to tell us a little bit more about the story with regard to the ship and the overall situation thank you. the german car maker dialer has promised maximum speed and cooperate cooperative transparency over its dirty diesels following some stern words from the transport minister the c.e.o. . has ordered the recall of seven hundred seventy four thousand vehicles across europe they were fitted with defeat devices software that turns off emissions controls under certain conditions in order to get around strict environmental standards. are not the top stories that we've been following for you here at the w. and just to remind you we have some breaking news coming in earlier and here is some more on that's. actually would like to tell you that as
11:15 pm
we mentioned there with our breaking news the local media reports in the united states they're floating a u.s. justice department spokesperson there saying that staff have taken shelter amid reports of an active shooter in the building but local police are saying there is no sign of any one shooting there is no more information at the moment but we will be bringing you details as soon as we can about what that you are up to date now on to the good news i'm sorry kelly in berlin and so much. going to be. going. on in the. great yourself. interior design channel on june.
