10:00 am
here in south korea i think no one expected there to be a breakthrough in this summit today but i think for many people people that i've spoken with see this as the start of a process that would not only lead to the denuclearization of the peninsula but also perhaps the end of the korean war or replacing that decade's old environment this agreement with a permanent peace treaty. jason south korean president moon jay and said that he hardly slept the night before the summit in singapore do you think that his expectations for what was to unfold today have been matched or he really hinges entire international reputation on this summit he has acted as the facilitator from the very start he had said not only to the south korean people but to the world that he could make the impossible happen that he could make the u.s. leader and the north korean leader sit down across from one another and i'm sure any agreements made i think anything short of the talks completely breaking down is
10:01 am
good news for the south korean president now trump has reportedly given security assurances to north korea will fall be concerned that those assurances those guarantees may have gone further than it wants. i mean we have to remember there are parallel negotiations going on here south korea and north korea are also engaged in various discussions and talks and even later this week military official calls from north and south korea are set to hold a round of discussions so i don't think president trump would overstep what would be the comfort line for the south korean leader after all president also wants to lessen tensions here on the peninsula and and work together with north korea's military to build trust. now micron peo is apparently reportedly set to bounce get on a plane and head to seoul to deep brief moon j.
10:02 am
and on the summit what more have you heard about this. well i mean this is a pretty for this is a pretty standard seeing after president moon had met with kim jong il and he sent his national security adviser to washington i mean this is a way i think for the allies just to make sure that they are on the same page but i think what's coming out of singapore today has been so far good news to the south korean president and the south korean public jason what else can we expect moving forward or one of the south koreans expecting to happen after this summit surely not a lot has been discussed perhaps in terms of concrete policy but that's coming in the days weeks and years ahead but what are the what is so looking at right now. why i think the south korean people all want to just hoping that the dialogue continues that there is not a breakdown i remember there have been remains like this made many times in the past between the two koreas so but they often fallen apart after some time so i
10:03 am
think for many south koreans they just want to see the dialogue continuing and not returning to a time like last year where there was fears that it a third world war was going to erupt between the u.s. and north korea jason strother reporting live from seoul thank you very much thank you. now d.w. correspondent alexandra phenomenas following a story this historic summit for us from singapore alexandra tromp and kim have signed this document do we know exactly to what they've agreed to do. walter are copies of this document circulating here at this press conference or both they have to say that the white house the white house press office has not yet distributive officially and that i was even told that we have to wait until the

press conference is conducted to learn more about as bad as i said there are. reports about what this document is saying. seems that donald trump would provide specific picture of cigar auntie's to king in exchange for the north korean leader wavering commitment to complete standing clara's a nation of the north korea of the korean peninsula and there are four bullet points and then the command and in which they laid out goals for future rounds of negotiation however we have to say that there are no specific and disick indication what steps each side would take immediately so both sides. apparently agreed to establish new relations between the countries and also

committed to build a lasting and stable peace. process in the region iran driver speaking to you we are watching live images of a press conference that hasn't started yet there are dozens and dozens of members of the international press in this room waiting for donald trump the u.s. president to make a statement and potentially take questions and give some answers we have just seen u.s. secretary of state might pompei to enter the room and take a seat alexander can you talk to us a little bit more about mr pond pales role in all of this meeting up to the summit . sure i mean. you as secretary of state to compare of course a key figure in the senate goshi nations she traveled to north korea to speak directly with kim jong un at this time she wasn't. confirmed as you asked secretary of state but the first talks

and pyongyang were apparently crucial for the tours coming up she changed and she was the one who. briefed the president on you know specific issues. concerning north korea and she was the one. president. wanted to learn more not only about specific holding. but all called. him joe. alexandra can nominate reporting to us from singapore for d w covering this story thank you so much for your insight alexandra joining me in studio we have younger talent transatlantic fellow in asia program at
10:07 am
the german marshall fund of the united states young how we're watching this screen here. dozens of members of the international press have come to singapore to watch this event we're watching to what our expectations have those expectations that we've all had going into this been matched by what's happened i mean it's not over yet there could be potentially something happens now that blows all out of the water but as of this juncture what are we looking at i think we're looking at meeting expectations i think this is what has been expected and those that have been following this closely it was there was there were two options on the table if this goes terribly wrong from the start or this goes ok no one really expected it to be fantastic as an outcome now trump will sell this as a fantastic outcome and in this in a set way this is fine this is his policy this is how he does things and he wants to present himself as that the only or that's why he's going to be by himself on stage giving that press conference this is part of the show but if this leads to an actual process on peace on the peninsula that's fine if this is what it takes and
10:08 am
if this is what it needs now what we should be a little worried about is that if the substance is so limited on what has been agreed. how long will that process take and how long will trump feel ownership of that process how long will his patience last with this process and that's something that i just am worried about that he might want more immediate or more speedy results than actually could be delivered in a diplomatic process like this because at the outset the americans had said that they wanted not only complete verifiable irreversible the asian but they wanted it to happen quickly and the fact that the north koreans hadn't even agreed to doing it at all was something that a lot of observers were looking at what did you make of all of this well that's that's the problem i think expectations between the two sides were at least rhetorically very different but if you look and this is also because the process has been very unconventional if you talk to people in the state department or any of the ministries that are involved in the united states this process has been extraordinary so some of the expectations could have been right if you had involved
10:09 am
all of the people that are normally involved in these kind of process. as now there were other people in the in the negotiation teams that had experience with the six party talks and it's not only an experienced people but a bigger role for the state department will probably be a good thing in the follow up through this summit the fact that expectations are so different and varying not only in the states and on the korean peninsula but around the world as it is for us has actually helped these two leaders because in some ways if we're all expecting different kinds of things they can both walk out and say this was a success without having actually done anything concrete and that was a little bit of what going into this this was a little bit of the expectation that both sides will sell this as a success of this just happening and that the real work will start later and what we should say this is not a bad start it's an ok start for a conversation to take place now we certainly don't want to downplay anything that's happening today this is a significant moment the fact that
10:10 am
a north korean leader has met with a sitting american president why we shouldn't be too enthusiastic either so it's somewhere in the middle we're trying to we're trying to dump not downplay too much but we also want to show that i mean this is a significant moment north korean leader has ever met within a sitting american president and a lot of people especially supporters of trump will now hail this that he is the deal maker that he always said that he was whether he comes out of something today or in the weeks or months to calm he was able to meet with kim jong un but we also have to remember this is something that kim jong un has always wanted yes and that his father wanted in his grandfather one that this kind of the genesee is great so we will see the proof of all of this and the sincerity of this in the domestic politics of kim jong un to see whether he is willing and able to agree to some sort of reform opening up process even if it's very limited to address human rights violations that are as far as we know not in the agreed in the communique that they have signed so i think there is a lot to do left and especially with regard to the human rights situation the u.s.
10:11 am
has to be very careful not to be seen complicit with the tele tearing dealership up with coffee at the moment. have they said anything about human rights as far as we know from now they haven't but as we both have not been in the room i don't know there will be lots of news stories about this probably in the next couple of days weeks and months maybe some secret communiques also coming out what exactly has been said but i would be surprised if it would have been addressed in the bilateral meeting that maybe in the larger group and perhaps in this press conference that we're waiting for where u.s. president doll trump is set to speak some reporters will be shouting those questions whether he answers them or not we don't know but we are waiting for him to speak and potentially take questions from the international press that is waiting for them right now it appears that on the screens in that room they're showing some kind of video with the leaders in there appeared to be black and white images we will of course take you live to that press conference as soon as it begins younger we've been talking about legitimacy let's talk about trust now in
10:12 am
terms of negotiations donald trump as we mentioned has been saying that he is the deal maker he's the one that gets things done but without trust potentially how could this all go wrong well trump has a trust issue with a lot of leaders out there think justin trudeau could speak a lot to that at the moment so i think it's not that important at the moment that can really trust trump but that he gets what he wants out of this and this is the good in the sea this is the p.r. but this is also concrete relief on the economic front to be able to deliver some to his peers people so this is more important than the trust issue in general now for donald trump that's important because this is how he does politics so if he can say he trusts in general and that's a good thing for him the problem is if he if that trust is betrayed and that could happen that if easy easily by some sort of action that the north koreans are taking over the next couple of weeks months whatever he is going to be peston only again
10:13 am
involved in this process and this makes the whole dynamic a lot more complicated just mentioned the word betrayal these two men these two leaders have very interesting personalities i should say trump has been known to go back on his word changes mind with a tweet or with a phone call. could this what could happen now if something goes wrong today potentially someone looks at the other person the wrong way and that sets one of them off these are fears that not only observers but people part of the delegation have also had yeah this could all go wrong still and this is something that we should be concerned about so we have to be very careful about the steps that are taken that's what i'm saying that's why i'm saying i was quite happy to see that that the state department will run the process from now on because in the national security council you have john bolton was very different views on the korean peninsula so maybe this is a good side of wanting to just really get into into the nitty gritty details of
10:14 am
a diplomatic process a trunk and sort of also stay out of it for a moment and not have to be personally involved as much but he has invited kim jong un to the white house so we'll see what happens yeah visit could potentially take place we don't know when or when that could potentially happen but you're right he did mention that stick around we're going to go now and have a look back before the summit of course it all started with insults and threats that an agreement to meet which they have now done but that was followed by a cancellation and a restart let's have a look back at the unexpected series of events that led to this historic meeting. two unpredictable leaders two nations with a hostile past the world watch as north korea's kim jong un and u.s. president donald trump shook hands in singapore a first for them and for any u.s. president and north korean leader it almost didn't happen trump called it off before saying it was back on now the adversaries who have threatened nuclear exchange are it's changing pleasantries is going to. be the way to
10:15 am
get. people in the mood. practices and prejudices worked against us but we overcame all of them and we're here today in. the face to face between the two men moved on to a team meeting and a working lunch the u.s. wants north korea's denuclearization north korea wants u.s. security guarantees commitments that have been promised and reneged on before. the for closing the summit the leaders signed what trump called a comprehensive document a document that historians may look back on one day as a watershed in north korea u.s. relations something. we've got live images as you're seeing on the screen here comes u.s. president donald trump he's opening up all there is expected to our last minute is
10:16 am
three months actually because this has been going on for quite a while and that was a tape that we gave to chairman kim and his people his representatives and captures a lot captures what could be done and that's a great a great place has a potential to be an incredible place between south korea if you think about it and china that's got tremendous potential and i think he understands that he wants to do what's right and it's my honor today to address the people of the world following this very historic summit with chairman kim jong il of north korea spent very intensive hours together. and i think most of you have gotten the signed document or you will very shortly it's very comprehensive it's going to happen i stand before you as an emissary of the american people to deliver a message of hope and vision and a message of peace let me begin by thanking our incredible host in singapore
10:17 am
especially prime minister lee friend of mine this is a country of profound grace and beauty and we send our warmest wishes to every citizen of singapore's to really made this visit so important and so pleasant spite all of the work at all of the long hours i also want to thank president moon of south korea he's working hard in fact i'll be speaking to him right after were finished prime minister abi of japan friend of mine just left our country and he wants what's right for japan and for the world good man. and a very special person president xi of china who has really closed up that border maybe a little bit less so over the last couple of months but that's ok but he really has
10:18 am
and he's a terrific person and a friend of mine and. really a great leader of his people i want to thank them for their efforts to help us get through this very a stork day most importantly i want to thank chairman kim for taking the first bold step toward a bright new future for his people are unprecedented meeting the first between an american president and a leader of north korea proves that real change is indeed possible. my meeting with chairman kim was honest direct and productive we got to know each other well in a very confined period of time under very strong strong circumstance we're prepared to start a new history and we're ready to write a new chapter between our nations nearly seventy years ago think of that seventy
10:19 am
years ago. an extremely bloody conflict ravaged the korean peninsula countless people died in the conflict including tens of thousands of brave americans yet while the armistice was agreed to the war never ended to this day never ended but now we can all have hope that it will soon end and it will it will soon and the past does not have to define the future yesterday's conflict is not have to be tomorrow's war and as history has proven over and over again adversaries kennedy become friends we can honor the sacrifice of our forefathers by replacing the horrors of battle with the blessings of peace and that's what we're doing and that's what we have done there is no limit to what north korea can achieve when it gives up its nuclear weapons and embraces commerce
10:20 am
and then gauge mint with the rest of the world that really wants to engage chairman kim has before him an opportunity like no other to be remembered as the leader who ushered in a glorious new era of security and prosperity for his people chairman kim and i just signed a joint statement in which he reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the korean peninsula. we also agreed to vigorous negotiations to implement the agreement as soon as possible and he wants to do that this is in the past this isn't another administration that never got it started and therefore never got it done chairman kim has told me that north korea is already destroying
10:21 am
a major missile engine testing site that's not in your signed document we agreed to that after the agreement was signed as a big thing for the missiles that they were testing the site is going to be destroyed very soon today is the beginning of an arduous process our eyes are wide open but peace is always worth the effort especially in this case this should have been done years ago they should have been resolved a long time ago but we are resolving it now chairman kim has the chance to seize an incredible future for his people anyone can make war but only the most courageous can make peace the current state of affairs cannot endure forever the people of korea north and south of profoundly talented industrious and gifted these are truly gifted people they share the same heritage language customs
10:22 am
culture and destiny but to realize their amazing destiny to reunite their national family the menace of nuclear weapons will now be removed in the meantime the sanctions will remain in effect we dream of a future where all koreans can live together in harmony where families are reunited and hopes are reborn and where the light of peace chases away the darkness of war. this bright future is winner within and this is what's happening it is right there it's within our reach it's going to be there it's going to happen people thought this could never take place it is now taking place it's a very great day it's a very great moment in the history of the world and chairman kim is on his way back to north korea and i know for
10:23 am
a fact as soon as he arrives he's going to start a process that's going to make a lot of people very happy and very safe so it's an honor to be with everybody today the media it's a big gathering of media i will say makes me feel very uncomfortable. but it is what it is people understand that this is something very important to all of us including yourselves and your family so thank you very much for being here will take some questions while a lot of questions go ahead sure go ahead and be said president two questions for you if you don't mind first the man you met today kim as you know has killed family members has starved his own people is responsible for the death of. why are you so comfortable calling him very talented well he's very talented anybody that takes over a situation like he did at twenty six years of age and is able to run it and
10:24 am
run it tough i don't say it was nice or i don't say anything about it he ran it very few people at that age you can take one out of ten thousand probably couldn't . ato warm beer is a very special person and he will be for a long time in my life his parents are good friends of mine i think without auto this would not have happened something happened from that day it was a terrible thing it was brutal but a lot of people started to focus on what was going on imploding. north korea i really think that otto is someone who did not die in vain i told this to his parents especially young men and and i have to say special parents' special people did not die in vain he had a lot to do with speaking out today thank you very much that question for you sir was on the security second question. sir and since you talked about in your
10:25 am
statement can you be specific about what assurances you are willing to give to kim jong un does that include reducing military capabilities and just a follow up on your answer no we're not reducing anything we're not reduce at some point i have to be honest that i've used to say this during my campaign as you know probably better than most. i want to get our soldiers out i want to bring our soldiers back on we have right now thirty two thousand soldiers in south korea and i'd like to be able to bring them back home but that's not part of the equation right now at some point i hope it will be but not right now we will be stopping the war games which will save us a tremendous amount of money on lassen until we see that the future negotiation is not going along like it should but we'll be saving a tremendous amount of money plus i think it's very provocative. yes john
10:26 am
as. well go ahead i'm sorry for you john roberts or look at you look there's a much better writer equally. mr president. mr president this joint statement does not talk about verifiable or irreversible denuclearization that a concession on the part of the night no not at all because if you look at it i mean it said we are going to. let's say here it will be gone a week i don't think you can be any more plain than what we're what we're asking issues related the establishment of the new us d p k our relations the building. we talk about the guarantees and we talk about unwavering commitment to the complete denuclearization of the korean peninsula this is the document that we just discussed with chairman kim methods to verify it with the united states or international organizations that very process that yes we do yes we do it and we'll
10:27 am
be verifying yeah we'll be verifying it'll be verified as well that's going to be achieved by having a lot of people there and as we develop a certain trust and we think we have done that secretary pump a has been really doing a fantastic job his staff everybody as we do that we could have a lot of people there and we're going to be working with them won a lot of other things but this is complete he nuclearization of north korea and it will be verified it will be americans or international a combinations about combinations of and we have talked about it yes you have to have in a nice. respectful respectful sir what did kim jong un say to you to give you the confidence that for once in the history of north korea they are not cheating the system and gaming the world and gaming of the people who will have to go in and make sure that they are actually giving up their
10:28 am
nuclear arsenal i mean very fair question is we he actually mentioned the fact that they proceeded down a path in the past and ultimately as you know nothing got done in one case they took billions of dollars during the clinton regime took billions of dollars and nothing happened that was a terrible thing and he actually brought it up to me and he said we have never gone this far i don't think they've ever had the confidence frankly in a president that they have right now for getting things done and having the ability to get things done and he was very firm in the fact that he wants to do this i think he might want to do this as much or even more than me because they see a very bright future for north korea so you never know right we never know but i think we send a very comprehensive documents a day and i think most of you have been given that commit but we signed a very very comprehensive document and i believe is going to live up to that akron
10:29 am
in fact when he lands which is going to be shortly i think that he will start that process right away i do i do i can only say that i know him for really well it's been very rhetorical as you know i think without the rhetoric it wouldn't have happened i think without other things going along i think the establishment of a new team was very important if a great team but i do i think he wants to get it done i really feel that very strongly. this john i think you know you two guys look alike when the light is right on that the hair is very similar let me see who has better hair he's got pretty good hair it's the it's the angelic glow of the backlighting mr president that mixes like some similar. of course the didn't equalization nuclear weapons and biological weapons and what not is one problem in north korea another huge problem is the the horrible record that they have on human rights was that discussed at all
10:30 am
is that something that you will tackle and yes it was discussed it will be discussed more in the future human rights. and what was also discussed in great detail john was the fact that you know we have and i must have had i just countless calls and letters and. weitz anything you can do they want the remains of their sons back they want the remains of their fathers and mothers a day all of the people that got caught in that really brutal war which took place to a large extent in north korea and. i asked for today and we got it that was a very last minute the remains will be coming back they're going to start that process immediately but so many people even during the campaign did say is there any way you can work with north korea to get the remains of my son back when my father back so many people.
