the state of the news life from donald trump alles the outcome of a summit with kim jong. il does not have to define the future yesterday's conflict is not out to be tomorrow's war. and as history has proven over and over again adversaries care indeed become friends u.s. president was speaking after signing a joint declaration with north korean leader to denuclearize the korean patient.
12:01 pm
welcome to the program a first bold step to a bright new future u.s. president donald trump has praised north korea's leader kim jong un after he be affirmed a commitment to denuclearizing the new at the korean peninsula president trump made the declaration at the press conference following their historic summit he went on to say that the north is already destroying a missile testing site and explained that this wasn't in the joint declaration as a great afterwards they want to he went on to announce that the u.s. would cease military exercises on the korean peninsula but that sanctions would remain. the president has gone on to price the north korean leader for signing the agreement. all right roeser the person is wearing an american person and the leader of north korea.
12:02 pm
really changes in the last. minute with your interview was ours. and preserved we got to know each other well very confined. so let's go through some of the main points in the joint statement the united states and the democratic people's republic of korea the d.p. r. k. commits to establish a new u.s. d p r k relations in accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two countries for peace and prosperity the document goes on the united states and to the d.p. r. k. who join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the korean peninsula and also goes on to reaffirm the april twenty seventh twenty eight hundred pound declaration of the d.p. r. k.
12:03 pm
commits to work towards complete they need clear isolation of the korean peninsula mr trump has declared that today's summit is a turning point in relations with north korea many experts however are criticizing the declaration the head of the nobel prize winning the nuclear disarmament group i can bat feen as weighed in on twitter she said it lacks agreement on nuclear disarmament issues she's written that this all looked more like a big welcome party to the nuclear armed club robert kelly is a korea analyst and based in south korea he also expressed disappointment he tweeted wow if this is it this is depressing this is even thinner than most skeptics anticipated singapore then rejoined correspondent bastin hearted welcome basta see if you could possible flesh on what the president and chairman have agreed to. yeah
12:04 pm
that's exactly that's you know the good. flesh on the on the bones of this agreement that's what everyone's looking for and that's why everyone's so disappointed because it's all all only vague terms and nothing that wasn't really that wasn't really there before it was is all you know north korea said that they'd be willing to you know they'd be working towards complete denuclearization but it's not clear what that what that really means the united states said they would give security guarantees now donald trump went into that a little a little more during his press conference but all those points that you just read out that are in this declaration they're all really vague and you know it could be anything and nothing and i think that's why all these experts and these observers are so disappointed with this because they're like they're saying this doesn't mean anything in these it doesn't mean anything until further actions back this up and
12:05 pm
president trump said in his in his press conference that he was convinced that you know that kim jong un of north korea was willing to follow up on these commitments and to denuclearize but it's all just sort of seems to be based on his gut feeling really feel that he had a good impression of kim jong un and he he thinks that he's he's the real deal he's serious you know and that's what he bases this on and that in and says. he's convinced that that this is that this is why he's not convinced it's going to work but at least that that kids are going to series and that some things things are going to start happening soon feel that's what he said in his press conference so we'll have to wait and see if that really happens while concrete declaration seems to be that u.s. military maneuvers only only korea will cease what did the usa get in return.
12:06 pm
yes that's what donald trump said during his press conference and that was interesting because yesterday secretary of state pompei oh in his press briefing said there would be security guarantees that were in place before now that seems to be it the united states agrees to hold these military drills that president trump calls war games at least for the time being at least he said unless he sees that there is no there is no progress in what they discussed about denuclearization mainly of course so until then he wants to for the time being he wants to halt these these these nuclear drills and these military drills in south korea and of course for north korea that sort of important because that's something that really antagonizes them every time it happens happens once a year these major military drills just finished several weeks ago for this year
12:07 pm
and every time that happens north korea really rattles there's saber and you know that this is the time when in the past they they did missile tests in nuclear tests to sort of show that they're not happy about this so this is something that donald trump gave them and he and he said. you know you thought it was necessary for the time being but he also said that you know it's not irreversible if if he doesn't see any progress in what's going to be coming in the next weeks and months then that decision might be might change again phil so the big target of course was military military decisions was there anything agreed about human rights. well president trump again in his press conference said that the issue was also discussed he said it was discussed at length even though not to the degree that you
12:08 pm
know what they talked about denuclearization because that's what they came here to do but they also talked about human rights but there was nothing nothing again nothing concrete that they agreed on but he said again he thinks that things are going to start improving soon he even went as far as to say that those presume one hundred twenty thousand people in north korean labor camps were the big winners of this of this summit because he thinks that that that you know their lives will improve their situation will improve at least he seems to be convinced of that but again no conk nothing concrete in that declaration about any improvement of the human rights situation which is dire in north korea feel so there was a meeting a handshake a signature and then a press conference which went on for some time at which only one of the parties was present when it was chairman kim. well
12:09 pm
presumably he was already on his way back to north korea now of course you know. kim jong un is not the type of guy to get out in front of the international media and so questions if you look at the north korean media one of the most heavily censored media is in the world and. the government controls one hundred percent of what north koreans are allowed to know and what they're not allowed to know so it's no surprise that you know that can draw on wouldn't get out and face critical questions that no doubt at the international press corps would have put to him so that's not really a surprise there donald trump on the other hand seem quite relaxed after this after the summit and as you said that press conference went on and. yes so and he said he thinks things are going to improve from here but we're going to have to wait and see if that really happens phil fashion heartache in singapore thank you
12:10 pm
it's good movement and i'm going to stand so who's an expert on security and in the east and south asia is from the european council on foreign relations welcome to d.w. but you know it's a good not surprise that chairman kim wasn't there. your legs at your thinking as well that yes this is not something he does it's not something he would do together with the u.s. president i believe but i do expect him to have been on t.v. screen and follow every single want. let's talk about the military aspects of this mentioned with with bastion that it looks like north korea gets security in exchange for denuclearization. but it doesn't look like either side has yet outlined what the denuclearization will look like and the verifiable steps towards that now i also don't believe this has been the
12:11 pm
primary goal of that meeting in fact this was a meeting for the sake of having a meeting and for a handshake that will be protocol in the history books and was not the priority to come up with a detailed roadmap for de nuclearization this will come up fully at a later stage so this is the stars of the process is what everyone hopes. yes distend be seen as a start if there are talks that follow on. peace on denuclearization on the future of the korean peninsula then this meeting with trump can be seen as the start of this process as if either side can trust the other day they started off as as as foes trading insults and then this meeting came out of nowhere and now we get the photo op and the handshake let's hear president trump talking about trust and kim jong. il he might want to do this as much or even more than me because they
12:12 pm
see a very bright future for north korea but we signed a very very comprehensive document and i believe is going to live up to the fact when he lands which is going to be shortly i think that he will start that process right away. i mean president clearly very confident our coverage a year. our i mean fast of all i think we all experience a trump says a lot of things it does mean and i believe i don't believe that he tossed scheme young him as he states but i think his mistrust is mutual rightly so i also don't think that can on really trusts from the trust will come out a later much later stage if it comes so given that and so what are we the now waiting for so the have the photo of. both sides have gone to their corners and what happens next some next would be on hopefully the working level it took at the exit of talks starting i think we will see that you think we will see diplomats
12:13 pm
going from both sides or will just happen in the background that are fast happened in the background and once they have achieved something then they will also do it publicly i believe but i do think that this would be the next step for the diplomats walking level to try to or walk on the actual substance that goes beyond the announcement the symbolic announcements that have been made so far ok so the big change that i see from today is the declaration to cease the military maneuvers although president trump say that did say that those thirty two thousand u.s. soldiers would remain. while he said they would remain on the same time he said he wants to send them home at a later stage. again there are some statements by president charmed that have been made and we will now see you watch of these statements will be implemented in fact in reality because we didn't hear any timescales we did so not so now we now just
12:14 pm
wait for someone to lead us something while we now wait for exactly for the watching level to walk out the details to see if they are actually any details and hope that one thousand take anything back while he's on the way home to have planes are going to record from the that you can see in the council on foreign relations thank you substantially indeed. i asked the news conference president trump also said that he had briefly discussed the issue of human rights in north korea and here's what he said you president drop expect him john to do about the human rights record regarding the north korean people right it was discussed it was discussed relatively briefly compared to the nuclearization obviously that's where we started and where we ended but they will be doing things and i think he wants to do things i was
12:15 pm
a north korea specialist with human rights group amnesty international and so i asked him what he'd heard of the two leaders discussions what he made of the two leaders discussions on human rights. well if any human rights have been covered in the conversation it has not been reflected in any of the documents and definitely not in the declaration which was rather sparse in terms of substance well president trump mentioned in his press conference after the. release in the declaration that he did discuss human rights with kim jong il and unfortunately he failed to mention what exactly he has covered so we wish that he had covered the main issues that we have raised with him namely the detention facilities prison camps and also the fact that north koreans have been like cut off from the outside world
12:16 pm
in terms of the freedom of movement and freedom of information so i hope that he would elaborate more on what he has talked to john about in some documents of possible and is it your thought that these are just this is just not a high enough priority for either or both of these governments well that was disappointing but in some sense it was predictable and understandable i think like from the very start the main objective of the. some of what's at the nuclear isolation so like something like human rights watch if you like some like humans rights could have the potential to make an ad antagonized if not handled the right way but that said i think certain issues could be dealt with more easily and some harder issues can be left later so i hope at
12:17 pm
least he could deal with for example the right to health and food of the citizens because even though the fruits the crisis years have passed it's still very difficult for humanitarian organizations to operate in north korea they're not given access to freely distribute their materials and also are not allowed to have free and monitoring accept so i think that would be something to start with early and also some other issues such as freedom of communications i think am north korea is developing very quickly in terms of telecommunications but most of its people are not able to access the internet or to make phone calls to the outside world and that shouldn't be the case so i think those are things that can injure at that time could have raised in germany. and singapore thank you. so it's been brought to my attention that i misidentified our last guest who was and i do wish denzel rather than i go back now the world of business and finance
12:18 pm
has of course been following the proceedings in singapore clean the house elf as has more in the us dollars over a mere three week highs and asian shares have been gaining as investors show relief over the summit result north korea hopes for a big economic boost but it has faster go to catch up with its cousin in the south let's see just how far the spread of koreans had to states after world war two was meant as a temporary solution that became a permanent division at the time the north had the economic advantage with the lion's share of korea's industry actually located there it is states are actually similar in size at least twice as many people living in south korea than in the north at least we think so because exact numbers are hard to come by and the two nations economies are vastly different two in twenty sixteen south korea's g.d.p. was just under one point five trillion us dollars that's trillion with a t.
12:19 pm
well north korea's looks like a rounding error at twenty six billion twenty seven billion that it's a similar situation when it comes to trade south korea is one of the world's biggest exporters of the huge trade surplus and in the imports and it does a trillion dollars worth of total trade with other countries around the world every year in contrast north korea's external trade is minuscule almost all of it comes from china that is with china which has been keeping a close eye on the summit. this is the view into north korea from the chinese border city of dandong here interest in the events that led to the extraordinary meeting of the north korean leader and the u.s. president has been huge for many locals it was about business as much as politics.
12:20 pm
if the missing between trump and kim is successful it will be great for us people in dandong because we do a lot of cross border trade. by cross border trade that's what my husband does he had investments in north korea so we really hope that the country opens up soon. for a country as isolated as north korea maintaining ties with china has proven to be an economic lifeline look at the numbers and you'll see why in twenty fifteen north korea imported goods worth almost three and a half billion dollars eighty five percent of them came from china indian and russian imports together accounted for a further five and a half percent with countries including mexico and the philippines making up the rest. turning to north korean exports now they were worth two point eight billion dollars eighty three percent of them went to you guessed it china for their three and a half percent went to india north korea's top exports include minerals textiles and
12:21 pm
fish. but amid the flurry of excitement about bridging differences it's easy to overlook the source of north korea's decades of political and economic isolation reports of human rights abuses including slave labor prison camps and torture are among the reasons the country's been shot of international diplomacy. with south korea. well that's interesting because trump said that the way he got kim into a room was to present him with a vision of the future where and set of he was instead of testing weapons he would
12:22 pm
have the best hotels in north korea and he encouraged them to think about it from a real estate perspective which of course is the perspective that trump would have as a real estate mogul and in fact the whole summit had a very hard of the deal feel to it in any case the increased economic integration within the region is something about south korean chamber of commerce has said it welcomes its just released a statement saying the south korean industrial sector is preparing for an age of increased economic cooperation with north korea it has to be said however that they have faith that the sanctions on north korea would stay in place so obviously any declarations of an economic golden age impending for north korea would be premature . schools but the deep geo political race has seems to have decreased for the time being and that's good for invested over there really isn't it science. actually you know it really we've seen quite
12:23 pm
a muted reaction from investors but to be fair that comes with a lot of expectation management they were prepared to see the absence of disaster as a favorable outcome say in the form of a backward slide of hostilities between trump and kim instead what we have now are two leaders who seem to really like each other a broad agreement but flight on detail but for now that's enough for investors to retain their calm and keep from reacting to this in a market fashion. in front of their thank you. boss if there is to be a peace agreement the two koreas will have to overcome decades ok thank you so the two koreas go mr. that way since the armistice that ended korean hostages in one thousand nine hundred fifty three japanese photographer hugh soco shada has taken a series of portraits of people on both sides of the demarcation line same number

as talks on north korea's nuclear program or collapse. last year south korea elected a liberal president who has brought new momentum to relations between north and south korea. many see this as a turning point. so they must have gone a bit confused by all the momentous changes underway here and sort of to model them with me and was able to do this project because the two countries are so different . if they grow closer my idea wouldn't work as well. to be honest i'm glad i managed to do it when i did my. mind yet to you know the whole of the. of the unification between north and south korea it's still hard to imagine he she does audience already has
