what's in a name everything apparently after more than twenty five years of wrangling with the prime minister of the former yugoslav republic of macedonia and ounces a snappier new name for the country stay with us here when it ends and flaring tensions in french president some annual pop song denounces italy over a rescue ship left to drift in the mediterranean the more than six hundred stranded migrants now heading to spain after it stepped in and offered to help. kelly welcome to the program they came they shook hands they made history and melba hard part against donald trump and kim jong un rocked up their own president and summit in singapore with a joint declaration pledging to denuclearize. the korean peninsula but the document
9:02 pm
does not specify a timeline or a deadline for p.r. to get rid of its nuclear weapons north korea's human rights record also didn't feature in the final statement with the impact of the summit still to be determined both leaders seem to keen to put the past behind them. it's the moment many doubted would happen u.s. president donald trump and north korean leader kim jong un signed a joint declaration which commits p.r. nyang to the complete denuclearization of the korean peninsula the highly anticipated summit in singapore hailed a success by the leaders thank you for being here. today we had a historic meeting and decided to leave the past behind us were about to sign a historic document the world will see a major change in the idea that. we have developed

a very special bond so. people are going to be very impressed people are going to be very happy and we're going to take care of a very big and very dangerous problem for the world that problem nuclear weapons in the agreement north korea has pledged to dismantle its nuclear arsenal but critics say the declaration fails to provide concrete steps as to how that will be achieved and verified he has reneged on such promises in the past. trump is confident that this time will be different he spoke of his special bond with kim and as with all friendships compromise must come from both sides directly after the summit trump announced washington would cease its joint military drills with south korea. we will be stopping the war games which will save us a tremendous amount of money or unless and until we see that the future negotiation
9:04 pm
is not going along like it should. it's a move that's seen as a major concession by some but president trump headed back to washington proud of his achievements his team plans to begin working on the details of the declaration next week. more let's bring in now erik gomes a defense and foreign policy analyst who joins us from washington welcome to you eric so we have this joint statement now with not much flesh on the bone do you see it as a first step toward peace or did donald trump get taken for a ride here by the north koreans. i think could be a potential first step towards peace like you mentioned the hard work is still ahead of us there's still a lot to iron now and a lot to get accomplished between now and some future denuclearization of north korea but i think that the joint statement that was released it builds on some of
9:05 pm
the progress that we've seen on the inner korean summit and i think that i think they could be different this time ok i mean so let's break this down now let's get into the details because one thing that is certainly different this time president trump making a major concession at the very outset promising to cease those military exercises with south korea a huge move here critics say that he got nothing tangible in return is that a fair assessment. i think we need to wait to see what the north koreans do have in his q. and a remarks trump did mention that they would make some sort of concessions including the dismantlement of a potential. rocket engine test site but one thing that's important to remember about this concession is that. counseling military drills is a relatively easy thing to reverse and try. you know if the negotiations are not going satisfactory he can reverse the decision and resume the exercises so i think
9:06 pm
in the short to medium term canceling them doesn't really. it doesn't really reduce u.s. readiness too much and it doesn't reduce our turn posture in the region but it is a step that i think was my pompei have said that the administration was prepared to make assurances or to make offers to the north that other administrations have been willing to make in the past so i think that this is an example of that and we'll see how the north koreans react and i think china has sort of baked in the flexibility to reverse this concession if he needs to one way that we know the united states wants the north koreans to react for example on this to improve their human rights record to improve their record on torture assassinations things of that regard i mean this was basically not even in the statement it doesn't even seem as if it's discussed extensively at these talks what do you think that that tells us. well i think the dozen very touchy issue for
9:07 pm
the north koreans making it the surprise very purpose of the negotiation at the outset might of done more harm than good for the future of the negotiation it is clearly something that needs to be addressed and something that i hope the administration will address in the future rounds of negotiation with the north. and the i think the joint declaration is trying to establish that is trying to establish a pattern of high level dialogue that can take place so while i agree with you that you know it was a really mentioned i don't think that that is too much of a black mark against the summit itself what matters next is what matters is what comes next and how can the administration use this summit as a source of momentum to keep negotiations and to keep diplomatic engagement going in a positive and a positive way and i'm cautiously hopeful that that will be the case although i

understand you know given the past history of north korea it's certainly not a certainty that that will develop and that's a message that we're hearing from many experts at this hour that there is a healthy doeth so some skepticism that that that is an umbrella over that hope and eric gomez we thank you so much for joining us this evening to give us your assessment as we mentioned you're a defense and foreign policy analyst we appreciate it. but. over reaction to this summit around the world has generally been favorable as we mentioned if sometimes cautious many leaders are hedging their bets until something more concrete emerges from further talks between trump the trump administration and north korea. there was a handshake as they met another during the negotiations and another after they signed the joint statement just watched that declaration is worth in the long term is the question being discussed around the world japan's prime minister sounded an optimistic note did actually go i believe this will be the first step in solving

the problems with north korea. only with. the european union also welcome to meeting as a sign of progress. today's summit between the two groups that's diplomacy and dialogue the only way forward but others urged caution us democrats warned that the deal lacked concrete details and the message from german politicians was wait and see. does not take international agreements and contracts seriously he shows a wild disregard for global political norms but. still the opportunities seem to i weigh the risks in many eyes above all inside korea a country still formally at war with the north. sea it's wonderful amazing i'm so happy about this agreement that seventy years of war is nothing next to the
