is not going along like it should. it's a move that's seen as a major concession by some but president trump headed back to washington proud of his achievements his team plans to begin working on the details of the declaration next week. more let's bring in now erik gomes a defense and foreign policy analyst who joins us from washington welcome to you eric so we have this joint statement now with not much flesh on the bone do you see it as a first step toward peace or did donald trump get taken for a ride here by the north koreans. i think could be a potential first step towards peace like you mentioned the hard work is still ahead of us there's still a lot to iron now and a lot to get accomplished between now and some future denuclearization of north korea but i think that the joint statement that was released it builds on some of

the progress that we've seen on the inner korean summit and i think that i think they could be different this time ok i mean so let's break this down now let's get into the details because one thing that is certainly different this time president trump making a major concession at the very outset promising to cease those military exercises with south korea a huge move here critics say that he got nothing tangible in return is that a fair assessment. i think we need to wait to see what the north koreans do have in his q. and a remarks trump did mention that they would make some sort of concessions including the dismantlement of a potential. rocket engine test site but one thing that's important to remember about this concession is that. counseling military drills is a relatively easy thing to reverse and try. you know if the negotiations are not going satisfactory he can reverse the decision and resume the exercises so i think

in the short to medium term canceling them doesn't really. it doesn't really reduce u.s. readiness too much and it doesn't reduce our turn posture in the region but it is a step that i think was my pompei have said that the administration was prepared to make assurances or to make offers to the north that other administrations have been willing to make in the past so i think that this is an example of that and we'll see how the north koreans react and i think china has sort of baked in the flexibility to reverse this concession if he needs to one way that we know the united states wants the north koreans to react for example on this to improve their human rights record to improve their record on torture assassinations things of that regard i mean this was basically not even in the statement it doesn't even seem as if it's discussed extensively at these talks what do you think that that tells us. well i think the dozen very touchy issue for

the north koreans making it the surprise very purpose of the negotiation at the outset might of done more harm than good for the future of the negotiation it is clearly something that needs to be addressed and something that i hope the administration will address in the future rounds of negotiation with the north. and the i think the joint declaration is trying to establish that is trying to establish a pattern of high level dialogue that can take place so while i agree with you that you know it was a really mentioned i don't think that that is too much of a black mark against the summit itself what matters next is what matters is what comes next and how can the administration use this summit as a source of momentum to keep negotiations and to keep diplomatic engagement going in a positive and a positive way and i'm cautiously hopeful that that will be the case although i
