hands they made history and now the hard part begins donald trump and kim jong un wrapped up their unprecedented summit in singapore with a joint declaration pledging to denuclearize the korean peninsula but the document does not specify a timeline or a deadline for p.r. to get rid of its nuclear weapons north korea's human rights record also did not feature in the final statement with the impact of the summit still to be determined both leaders seem to keen to put the past behind them. it's the moment many doubted would happen u.s. president donald trump and north korean leader kim jong un signed a joint declaration which commits p.r. nyang to the complete denuclearization of the korean peninsula the highly anticipated summit in singapore hailed a success by the leaders. to speak. i

. think. today we had a historic meeting and decided to leave the past behind us were about to sign a historic document the world will see a major change in the view that. we have developed a very special bond so. people are going to be very impressed people are going to be very happy and we're going to take care of a very big and very dangerous problem for the world that problem nuclear weapons in the agreement north korea has pledged to dismantle its nuclear arsenal but critics say the declaration fails to provide concrete steps as to how that will be achieved and verified p.r. nyang has reneged on such promises in the past. trump is confident that this time will be different he spoke of his special bond with kim and as with all friendships compromise must come from both sides directly after the summit trump announced

washington would cease its joint military drills with south korea. we will be stopping the war games which will save us a tremendous amount of money for unless and until we see the the future negotiation is not going away like it should. it's a move that's seen as a major concession by some but president trump headed back to washington proud of his achievements his team plans to begin working on the details of the declaration next week. and let's talk more about this now with lisa collins who is standing by in washington she is a fellow at the center for strategic and international studies and an expert on korea thank you so much for joining us this evening. thank you for having me here lisa you followed the summit closely this joint statement has been criticized as being too light on detail what do you think. so i would agree with that
10:05 pm
stayman i do believe that the four points that were mentioned in the joint statement one. of the korean peninsula one on u.s. and north korea forming a new relationship one on finding the remains of old prisoners of war in north korea and repatriating them to the united states and another talking about other significant options i think that these are things that have been mentioned before in previous declarations on previous agreements that we've had with the north koreans but it's lacking in some specificity especially when we talk about denuclearization and verification of the dismantlement of north korea's nuclear weapons program there's no mention of how that process would have been how long it would take who would be involved in those i think are very significant details that have been left out of this statement so far absolutely president basically
10:06 pm
underscoring and saying that he trusts the north korean leader to do that he also made a very major concession at the outset committing to seizing those military exercises that the u.s. conducts with critics saying he got nothing tangible return and i'd just like to ask you because you know up until now the strategy of previous leaders simply hasn't worked so why not try this approach. well i don't think there's anything wrong with trying a different approach and i think that we've seen that up into this point we've seen a rapid fire succession of. it with the north koreans and may have produced a you know a more quick timeline in terms of diplomacy but what i think is concerning particularly with regard to the announcement that unilaterally united states would be suspending u.s. korean military exercises one i don't think there was any discussion with our
10:07 pm
allies south korea and japan before the announcement was made and to the u.s. military u.s. military exercises should not necessarily be a political pawn in negotiations with north korea they are to prepare readiness and deterrence against the north korean threat and to make sure that the north koreans do not harm the allies in the region south korea and japan and so to have them put on the table as a concession by trump i think is very much undermining the security alliance system within asia. there was also no mention of north korea's record of human rights torture or assassinations what do you think about tells us. well i mean there was a very shortened timeline again for the for negotiating the summit and so that may have been one of the reasons why was a main topic but i think many people believe that human rights the issue is very important so fundamental in fact that it should be continually brought up with the
10:08 pm
north koreans in negotiations president tom said he mentioned it to kim jong un in private discussions i hope that in following up secretary of state pump aoe and the north korean officials will talk about it in follow up negotiations i think that we should continue to remind people that north korea is a state that still holds about one hundred twenty thousand people imprisoned in prison camps within the country and that's something that they have to rectify before they join the international community a lot of work to be done perhaps an understatement there lisa collins with the latest from washington as we mentioned you're a fellow at the center for strategic and international studies and an expert on korea and we thank you so much for joining us to share your expertise. thank you. well reaction to the summit around the world has been generally favorable if sometimes cautious as we just heard from lisa there many leaders are hedging their bets until something more concrete emerges from further talks between the two sides
10:09 pm
. that was a handshake as they met another during the negotiations and another after they signed the joint statement just watch that declaration is worth in the long term is the question being discussed around the world japan's prime minister sounded an optimistic note. did actually go i believe this will be the first step in solving the problems with north korea. away with. the european union also welcome to meeting as a sign of progress. today's summit between the two groups that diplomacy and dialogue the only way forward but others caution us democrats warned that the deal lacked concrete details and the message from german politicians was wait and see. the does not take international agreements and contracts seriously he shows
10:10 pm
a wild disregard for global political norms but socially it is still the opportunities seem to i weigh the risks in many eyes above all inside korea a country still formally at war with the north. sea it's wonderful amazing i'm so happy about this agreement and that seventy years of war is nothing next to the five hundred years of peace we had before reunification is coming that's for sure. the hopes are high after the excitement of the summit but they know the devil is in the details and the long negotiations ahead could still come to nothing. get a quick check of some other stories that have been making news around the world judges that the international criminal court have ordered the release of the former congolese vice president john pierre bemba the ruling comes after an appeals court overturned his convictions for war crimes committed in two thousand and two and two thousand and three he has been imprisoned since his arrest ten years ago. at least

brags it is being delivered. what is in a name a whole lot if you ask greece and macedonia these two countries have now resolved a dispute that has been blocking the former use yugoslav republic from joining nato and applying for e.u. membership this evening macedonia's prime minister and downstream that from now on his country would be known as the republic of the north to macedonia his counterpart in athens alexis tsipras that. you'll see shortly presented the deal to greece's president athens have long objected to the name macedonia because it is also the name of a greek province greece is now expected to drop its opposition to the north macedonia becoming a nato member and beginning the process of joining the e.u. . we got this reaction from one member of the european parliament who is happy to abandon the cumbersome former yugoslav republic of macedonia. so i think

it's really great that we don't have to use this this word or this name few or anymore and i'm really glad that after years of discussions the kates of discussion. was reasonable enough to find a compromise with not to know. french president emanuel lacan has denounced italy's refusal to take in more than six hundred migrants stranded aboard a rescue ship in the mediterranean president mccrone accuse the italian government of quote cynicism and said that it had an obligation under international law italy has sent ships to help transport the migrants to spain which has offered them refuge the french island of corsica has also offered to take the men. after more than two days stock at sea the six hundred twenty nine migrants on board to the rescue ship. are finally heading to a safe haven european n.g.o.s u.s.

have the exact numbers for the north and the economies will of vasili different in twenty sixteen south korea's g.d.p. was around sixteen hundred billion us dollars the north's just twenty seven billion now the south is one of the world's biggest exporters with a huge surplus at imports that it does a trillion dollars worth of trade every year the north's trade when it's miniscule and almost all of it with china. this is the view into north korea from the chinese border city of dandong here interest in the events that led to the extraordinary meeting of the north korean leader and the u.s. president has been huge for many locals it was about business as much as politics. if the missing between trump and kim is successful it will be great for us people and dong because we do

a lot of cross border trade. by cross border trade that's what my husband does he had investments in north korea so we really hope that the country opens up soon. for a country as isolated as north korea maintaining ties with china has proven to be an economic lifeline look at the numbers and you'll see why in twenty fifteen north korea imported goods worth almost three and a half billion dollars eighty five percent of them came from china indian and russian imports together accounted for a further five and a half percent with countries including mexico and the philippines making up the rest. turning to north korean exports now if they were worth two point eight billion dollars eighty three percent of them went to you guessed it china a further three and a half percent went to india north korea's top exports include minerals textiles and fish. but amid the flurry of excitement by bridging differences it's easy to

overlook the source of north korea's decades of political and economic isolation reports of human rights abuses including flavor labor prison camps and torture are among the reasons the country's been shot off international diplomacy. or u.s. stocks h.r. on tuesday with help from media stocks is a vest as look past and start us north korea summit have focused on the federal reserve policy meeting at the fed's widely expected to raise interest rates for the second time this year when it concludes its two day policy meeting on wednesday investors are especially looking at. whether it will raise rates three or four times this year. so let's go straight to yen score to you standing by for us in new york and what are you hearing there on the trading floor about that meeting. well it's certainly pretty much
10:19 pm
a done deal that we will see another interest rate increase and for certain the big question is will we see further increases this year and other one maybe two or maybe none and the problem is even the federal reserve do it does not really know at this point and lots depends on for example how the trade disputes will play out higher tariffs usually mean higher prices that could drive inflation i.r. and might cause the federal reserve to come up with more. increases we already got a new reading on consumer prices here on tuesday and we saw the biggest yearly increase in more than six years also if you look at the unemployment rate in the u.s. we're just shy of the lowest unemployment rate in about fifty years the only link missing is that wages are not really increasing in a big way at this point so well we will see another interest rate increase if there are more to follow this year remains to be seen yes thank you.

back as it is there now to something a little bit more even out of this well absolutely we're heading into outer space in fact we are going to a press conference that has made a difference german astronaut alexander gas took time off from his duties on the international space station to talk to reporters here on earth today he talked about life on the space station and the experiments that he would be conducting during his stay until december only arrived last wednesday on what is his second mission to space he will become commander of the i.s.f. in october and. bonnie was at the press conference and asked him whether he had any muscle memory from his last time in space ellison oh alex itself a kind of funny if from t w don't you fella first of all congratulations on the safe arrival of the r.s.s. thanks for taking the time to speak to us today we often speak about muscle memory the idea that out bodies respond automatically to some things we've done before and
10:23 pm
as one of your experiments mine times focuses on the muscular system we're wondering whether you have any muscle memory all of your twenty fourteen mission has been easier to attempt to microgravity and perhaps is that one of the experiments you've already started on. yeah i think she a really good point that you're bringing up i was wondering about exactly the same thing before my second flight i was like where where would i start right would i when i started like this a beginner again flying up here or would i have muscle memory and how to float in space and the answer is very clearly i still had it memorized like my feet actually memorized the position of foot holes that even didn't know the they were there but i realized when i came into the station my feet knew exactly where they are right so there is this amazing muscle memory it's like riding a bicycle i guess you don't know how you do it but your brain somehow does it and that's the same with being in space i realized that my body naturally for some
10:24 pm
reason adapts quite quite easily to different circumstances at the same thing and then start to cry had it in space and specially because of that it will be interesting to do the my tones experiment we will start that next week to see how muscles work we already did and experiment to grip experiment today and yesterday that deals with how human robotic interfaces work in space or on earth it's like when an astronauts drives a rover on the moon by remote control or a surgeon on earth like drives an operation robot somewhere in a remote area. that requires very similar processes that we still need to understand and that experiment is aimed for that so they experiment up here on the space station that increases the well that has a lot of benefits for the life on earth and increases our safety and our well being down there on earth. that was alexander speaking with us from space
