to talk more about this exciting news joining us from washington is claire richardson and with me on the set is the w.'s oliver moody claire i want to start off with you how has this news been received in the u.s. . hyla as you might imagine u.s. soccer fans are absolutely delighted by this news this is a sport that's really been growing in popularity over the past couple of decades especially since the u.s. hosted the world cup last time back in one thousand nine hundred four a lot of excitement tends to come from immigrant communities here who are rooting for their home countries teams particularly among the latino population in the united states compared to the rest of the world it should be said that the u.s. is not as a soccer crazy as some other countries it's competing with other major sports here obviously like baseball and american football and basketball and of course this year the u.s. men's team didn't qualify so you're probably not seeing the same level of excitement here as you are where you are in pearland for example but overall i do
5:04 pm
think that there's hope that this winning beda means that there is going to they're going to be able to see this sports to really take root something that was just rekindling americans interests oh right over morocco a lost out to the north american juggernaut they are soccer crazy they are participating in miss world cup but to no avail this time around they're scrappy underdog the big five times we talked last out you've really got a feel for the broken football fans of the five times it's an incredible number but in truth it never looked likely that morocco would win this bid you know feet clearly from a very early stage or at least the fifa leadership prefer the north american bid in partly because it did so well in the evaluations of the morocco certainly but also because of the money and this is the fear is that like the costs of the moroccan bridge looked much higher they needed to build nine stadiums they had this kind of sixteen billion dollars infrastructure plan where's the north american bid all the stadiums are already built and also it promises more revenues or at least we can
5:05 pm
expect more revenues from north america world cup and we could have from morocco so i think with the money a lot was already decided of a lot was decided already blue circle a bit more about well something related to money has come under a lot of pressure for not being transparent and the. bits that they for ordered for instance to qatar and russia have been more transparent this time around this is certainly a very different process to what we had the last time that a world cup it was it was approved gone are the days are set blatter and his executive committee which may get all these players and i guess stories inside many members of the executive committee who have since been convicted or at least accused of fraud now we had two hundred federations casting a vote in the world cup down the electronic way as well so we can see who voted for which bid and what not of course doesn't rule out corruption it doesn't mean that the whole thing is completely clean no one can say that it's certainly a very different story it's what happened for the bid for this world cup for
5:06 pm
example and it's encouraging step in the right direction claire want to go to you in washington president donald trump threw his weight behind this bid what the unintended consequences be that soccer ends up saving nafta. well that's right we saw him on twitter calling for other countries to vote in favor of the fifth it's interesting that this comes at a time that the united states has had such fraught relations with its neighbors in canada and mexico or mexico obviously the repeated calls to build a wall on the border of donald trump calling of mexican immigrants coming to the u.s. rapists and murderers the renegotiation of nafta as you mentioned is of major point of tension with canada we just heard him and insulting prime minister justin trudeau after and she seven summit in which donald trump managed to snub some of the united states' closest allies fire arriving late leaving early in favor of meeting with north korean leader kim jong un and refusing to sign on to a joint statement of common values at the very end so in this political climate you
5:07 pm
might think that this would be really fraught however it's important to remember that fifa is going to be the one doing a lot of the heavy lifting in terms of organizing and most importantly donald trump is not going to be in office once we get around to twenty twenty six. so the thank you so much here for now and all the i want you to stick around because we're going to talk about another breaking news story that's related to the cup because one of the favorites of this year's world cup is in disarray spain after having a sack their coach just two days before their first game. it was meant to be the biggest week in his career you look at the game was going into his first world cup at the helm of one of the favorites spain on tuesday he had been announced as the next coach of champions league when israel madrid due to take over for the tournament in russia but the timing and manner of the appointment sparked
5:08 pm
outrage among the spanish federation and found a hastily arranged press conference the day before the world cup kicked off sealed his second one with a few. his negotiations for real madrid were legal there is no issue with that. but the federation's was not informed about it we were told five minutes before the press release and we had to send a clear message to all employees of the spanish royal football federation. there is a way to proceed and we have to stick to our principles. less than a month ago look at the gay had signed a contract extension with spain keeping him in the job till twenty twenty. but the lure of succeeding zoo nadine's the down and madrid proved too much look at the last minute replacement is from mundo here to spain sporting director the druid captain. how big of a shocker is this this is this is stunning i don't think anything like this is ever
5:09 pm
happened at a world cup with one of the favorites has fired their coach on the eve of the tournament two days before the opening game in spain certainly were probably among the top four favorites this woke up so certainly and with with with a chance. i honestly don't think i can recall certainly in my lifetime an act of self-destruction quite like this we obviously play a meltdown as you think of the down with the head but back in two thousand and six we've had play revulse and what not where the atmosphere just wasn't right but i can't recall a federation or country have a deliberately making decision the homs that chances so much it's incredible suddenly so where do spain that team spain go from here well it is still a great team let's remember that as well these players are very very good live in playing together for a long time as well as we had and i don't yet know who is a spy in legend around madrid legend as well he was also already involved in the set up so he knows the players he knows how they prepared for the tournament i think he will still be able to get a lot out of this team i think certainly they'll get out great for example but
5:10 pm
certainly their chances of going down in my estimations and i would perhaps pick them to get to the quarterfinals now maybe but i wouldn't say any further. what develops. is keeping us on our toes already thank you so very much for that i would like to bring you up to speed now with some of the other stories making news around the world. the european union in the united nations have welcomed a decision by greece's northern neighbor to change its name macedonia is to become the republic of north macedonia while the country has been in a decades long dispute with greece over the name athens objected because greece has a northern province with the same name. one month after iraq's elections a shiite cleric worked out that a father and iran backed militia chief had the ally meeting and have agreed to form a political alliance while their two blocs came first and second in may's vote

which was marked by a historically low turnout and allegations of fraud. on. a saudi led coalition has launched an assault on yemen's main port city. it's been a key battle front and possible turning point in yemen's three year civil war between the country's saudi backed government in iran backed hooty rebels an estimated six hundred thousand people live in the area and aid groups are warning now that the new offensive risks causing massive civilian casualties and exacerbating the country's already severe humanitarian crisis. and earlier news spoke with the n.s.i. harry who's with the charity save the children and asked him what his teams and who are telling him about the situation on the ground. our teams and for they they are now living in our zone where they should also protect their own lives but our teams
5:12 pm
in what they do are trying to save lives there we are supplying hospitals with medicines and supplies in order to save children who are living in a bigger city and were supplying them with a three wood three month supply so that's in order to keep them alive as for three months but if the assault continues for four more than three months that's going to be disastrous will include increasing the coverage we're trying to cover more than more than one health facility at the time because the number of that we were covering in how they go was very specific was very limited but now we need to expand to further areas where we can save lives we also have given people and can cash assistance in order to be able to to live buy food buy you buy water etc we also reduced all nonessential non-essential activities in the city because

because it's very dangerous now to have to hold any other live and activities other than lifesaving activities. and that was the n.s.a. very of the charity save the children speaking earlier or to d w news or read our next story u.s. president donald trump has declared that there is no longer a nuclear threat from north korea just a day after his unprecedented summit with kim jong il and state media in north korea meanwhile are pre-trained the summit is a win for pyongyang listing american concessions including the promised end to a us south korean military exercises critics of the deal point to its vagueness and the fact that it contains no mention of washington's demand for the north's complete verifiable and irreversible denuclearization. in a train station in pyongyang north koreans huddle around newspaper stands to learn the outcome of the historic meeting between their leader and former arch donald trump. on state television glowing praise for kim jong il in with

a newsreader and answering that washington would lift sanctions against that country and suspend its joint military exercises with south korea. the exercises have angered pyongyang for decades conducted several times a year there a major part of washington security structure in east asia but now donald trump says they're provocative and a waste of money games of course of fortune you know we're spending a fortune every number of months we're doing war games with south korea. which is costing we're flying planes in from warm and we're bombing empty mountains for practice. suspending the drills is a concession that came as a surprise to many and in japan there's concern it may weaken security in the region and what does the waters do up there is my understanding that u.s. troops based in south korea and japan maintain an important role in the safety of this region she could runs into. and seoul newspapers criticized that the

teeny clear eyes ation agreement was missing three important words complete irreversible and verifiable but the south korean government called a summit a success. as did trump after landing back in the u.s. he tweeted that north korea was no longer washington's biggest and most dangerous problem and that the world can now sleep safer. thank you so much for watching the news continues at the top of the hours here. that people vote. rolls over information they provide the p.m.'s they want to express g.w. on facebook and twitter up to date and in touch follow us on.
