how and welcome i'm on the touchy not today marks the one year anniversary of the grandfather of tower fire in west london more than seventy people died in the cause of the u.k.'s deadliest day since the second was war now at known local time a nationwide minutes of sonnets is being held to remember the victims be taking you know live to the british capital to join the commemorations as you can see people have gathered that to pay homage to those who lost their lives just so a short while ago the queen is also attending and you're looking at these live pictures coming to you from the hot off the british capital.

you were just watching live pictures of a minute of silence being held for victims of the grenfell tower in london we saw pictures of the queen she was in chester it's a nationwide moment of silence or so parliamentarians that mean arctic you live to our correspondent big mass who is in london. a big it at this moment of silence was a nation wide event the whole of the country seems to be standing together to remember the victims. yes indeed a lot of attention on the tragedy a year ago and even more than a minute seventy two for the lives lost through the fire and i have to say it's very moving to be here in central london were survivors are coming but not only survivors and their families but also this is something that has really shocked the whole community because such a high rise building was burning through the night and everybody around here saw
1:03 pm
this people were hearing the screams of of those who were trapped in the building they they saw the flames they saw how quickly also it spread during the night and i remember in the morning after the fire i remember the rage of people and the people who really saw this how could this happen how could this fire spread and gulf this building and basically kill all of friends so it was something that that shook the community and there's been many stories told in the last year and and obviously everybody in britain knows about this and there is a lot of sympathy and a lot of attention in fact the number seventy two comes from the the death of a stillborn child who was born shortly after the blaze started to get from what one can see there were two tragedies one was actually the tragedy itself which and seventy two people lost their lives and then the tragedy of how authorities dealt

with the survivors some of the survivors are still looking for housing. some of the survivors also looking for housing however i think people also realize that it is a big problem immediately off the mouth of the tragedy there was a lot of anger towards the council towards local authorities and people felt there was a lack of help to resume a took a time to meet survivors and and people really felt that they had to do everything themselves there was a lot of voluntary efforts that that help people here in the community and that the officials were very slow to react however the fact that a lot of families all still in hotels is also due to the fact that there are a lot of wishes people for example don't want to live in the high rise building again they want to stay in the area but they want to live in a ground floor flat which is understandable if you have had a tragedy like this and you've been a victim of
1:05 pm
a fire like this so it's very difficult also to find suitable accommodation for a lot of the survivors for example i speak to one gentleman who escaped from the sixteenth floor and he is still and the hotel but he does know where he's going to go his flat is being built by the council but it does take its time and there also seems to be a great sense of outrage about this building which is the kitchen in a very high end off the city and yet the people living there were often people who were socially economically disadvantaged ethnic minorities and no camp was taken for how they were living. well yes a lot of people really feel that they were marginalized there was in particular one resident who had a blog who put it tension to the fire safety risk and he he he really published this and said you know this is not safe this building is not safe it could be a disaster but nobody listened to him and we have the inquiry now has just started
1:06 pm
and that is trying to get to the bottom of this from what we know what has emerged so far it seems like there's a whole catalogue of errors when it comes to fire safety particularly of course the cladding off the building which is was for insulation and people saw it in the light how it spread so quickly basically it burned like like patch then the question doubts were raised about the suitability of the windows about the ventilation that was insufficient so there were a whole range of issues that have been pointed out and that will have to be investigated and people here really do want this proper investigation it took taken a year for it to start people have become impatient however it's looks like they might have to wait even longer maybe several years longer for for the real. investigation to conclude a criminal investigation as well and people possibly be brought to court about this

big of mass on the first anniversary of the grenfell tower fire in london thank you very much here in germany chance i'm going to michael is facing a growing crisis with our coalition partners over her refugee policy interior minister haas wants some refugees to be turned away at the country's border however machall has rejected the court saying she does not want germany to go it alone it is unclear how much support matter still has within our own conservative bloc on the issue. discussions continued until the wee hours between chancellor angela merkel and interior minister horse a whole for but they failed to arrive at a solution it's a hopeful wants to turn refugees registered to other e.u. states back at the german border merkel insists on the e.u. principle of freedom of movement across their borders. but the issue has the potential to do serious damage to europe to our freedom of

movement in the shang in zone we agree that it's central to protect europe's external border in response to illegal migration at subic ignorant macro's conservative c.d.u. is at odds with its bavarian sister party the c s u two which see hope for belongs both parties interrupted regular parliamentary business on thursday to hold separate emergency meetings an extraordinary move. machall wants to strengthen protection of europe's external borders for instance by investing more in the european border agency frontex the hope is to deter people from attempting to enter europe at all see hope has paid lip service to this idea but after meeting with austria as chancellor on wednesday he called it a quote ideal scenario the implication is that since frontex isn't able to offer this ideal level of protection present national border checks should be

reintroduced. and even within the c.d.u. itself there are critics who doubt in a european solution. of course we'd like a european solution that's always better numbers but we've been waiting for two and a half years we can explain to voters why we're not doing anything at our national borders. thus as desperate migrants continue to cross the mediterranean the debate about what to do with them has become a political hot potato for conservatives in germany. so as you can see the confidence building up pressure the rift between chancellor merkel and critics led by interior minister horst is getting wider now tracking the story for us is our chief political editor michelle i know michelle how much of a showdown is this and who do you think will prevail while the sun is building up to one this is the closest that angle america has been to such a direct challenge she's had trouble with hospital for in the past who during the

beginning of the migration crisis basically accused her of acting illegally but this was the leader then the leader of the smaller sister party in bavaria and now he's her interior minister and there are signs really on the horizon that he may want to go it alone that he may just start implementing policy and this would be such a direct challenge to ungar machall leadership that she wouldn't be able to do anything but either sack the minister would which would essentially blow up her own government at this particular stage or actually head for a vote of confidence these both issues no longer seem like crazy ideas after this extraordinary move that we've seen here of course it will for the c.s.u. system party no longer willing to wait until that e.u. summit coming up is over no longer believing in michael's leadership to forge some kind of coalition that we've learnt that asked her own c.d.u. party in parliament to give her two more weeks basically pleading for two more
