this is deja vu news live from bird land on the night fans angela merkel's coalition in crisis the german chancellor faces a brit valiant over her policy on migrants within her conservative bloc her interior minister leading a revolt that could threaten america as political future. also coming up the twenty eighteen world cup has special kicked off in moscow after a glittering opening ceremony with robyn williams the first match turned out to be a big win for the host to dominate it start to finish.
11:01 pm
i'm sorry kelly welcome to the program we begin in germany where chancellor angela merkel is facing a rebellion by her interior minister over migration it's being seen as the most serious crisis to hit merkel since her new coalition government took office in march now the interior minister of the conservative bavarian c.s.u. wants the power to turn some migrants away at the border merkel has rejected the idea saying that it would undermine european solidarity but the interior minister or stay home for as reported is reported to be ready to fire her. it was a day of doubts and disruption of the german parliament as angle americal was in
11:02 pm
effect threatened with open rebellion the conservative bloc in the bundestag normally acts as one but in unprecedented scenes it held separate meetings on the same issue the varian conservatives of the c.s.u. versus the rest c.s.c. says it can wait no longer to see a change in medicals migration policy. and. once again we've made it clear what needs to be done to restore order at our borders we should take the step of turning refugees away from our borders who are already registered in another european country. or. biggest here. c.s.u. lead a horse to see hope and chancellor merkel had battled over the issue late into the night but no compromise was reached both sides agreed a european response to migration is needed it was a hole for says that it's taking too long merkel is still hoping for
11:03 pm
a deal with other reuse states at a summit in two weeks time. to me the question of how to tackle this migration issue is a litmus test for the future and cohesion of europe therefore needs to take every country's leaned into consideration the chancellor is putting the focus on beefing up the e.u. use external borders in the hope of deterring people from trying to end the year up until forced wants to follow the austrian approach where external controls don't work national border checks should be reintroduced his party says as interior minister he already has the power to implement that but that would force a confrontation with the chancellor which could threaten the government as desperate migrants continue to cross the mediterranean the debate about what to do with them has turned into a political showdown in berlin. and for more now on this dispute over immigration between the c.d.u. and the c.s.u. we have belinda crane chief political correspondent with us here in the studio how
11:04 pm
much of this melinda is about immigration indeed how much of it is about power i mean is there more to this than meets the eye it's all about power these two parties the chancellor's c.d.u. and the bavarian conservatives the c.s.u. they're always referred to as sister parties but in fact they're quite strange to sisters and one of the reasons for that is immigration policy basically the c.s.u. has been at odds with the chancellor and her open door immigration policy in ever since that large influx of migrants in twenty fifteen it has been a bone of contention since then so why is that conflict coming to a head now quite simply because of regional politics in the heartland of the c.s.u. namely in bavaria they're facing a difficult election in september looks like they could lose their dominance there that they've had for a very long time and the reason for that is the far right party the a.f.d.
11:05 pm
now that party is an anti immigration party so the c.s.u. is very eager to look tough to look tough on migration in order to ward off gains by the f.t. but the fact is this game of chicken could wind up bringing down the government and so hard to see how anybody emerges from that a winner how the c.s.u. could win either on a regional basis or what's their endgame on a national basis so it's a very strange and difficult conflict ok so that's the issue when it comes to power let's talk about the policy though that you know he's bringing to life the interior minister here i mean there has been a failure many have said of the of europe to adequately and comprehensively address the migration crisis so alternately does he have a point should germany no longer wait for the e.u. the fact is there may now be some movement within. we have a different constellation within some of the national governments we're going to see austria taking over the rotating presidency so there may be some movement at
11:06 pm
this summit in two weeks why not wait the two weeks frankly there is no urgency here we heard that that sound bite from the c.s.u. leader saying we need to restore order on the border there's no disorder on the border refugee numbers actually have been going down for quite some time but the chancellor is looking at some very fundamental principles if she were to give in to the c.s.u. demands she would be essentially taking the unilateral nationalist path that she has repeatedly condemned that it path is on the rise in a number of other european countries she does not want to set that president nor does she want to allow her interior minister to essentially reimposed border control sacrificing the essential principle of open borders with in the year of the european union so there's a lot at stake here it is a path that she has time and time again condemned and it will be very interesting to see if she is forced to compromise linda crane our chief political correspondent

a match that's. let's get more now on this spectacular win for russia we have matter in joining us from our sports desk and matt i mean this really could not have gotten better for them right five goals here incredible absolutely i mean this was you know pretty much custom made stark for this russia team which came into the tournament with a ton of question marks over its head and whether they were really ready for this level of competition you know when you're the host of world cup you don't play qualifying matches russia's ranking in the world you know fever rankings fell all the way to seventy and a lot of folks thought that even saudi arabia might be a tough test for them and that just wasn't the case at all they scored early they scored often they got two goals from dennis cherry very interesting player who might turn out to be one of their their key performers he's one of the few russian players who play in a top five european league he plays in spain and in fact grew up in spain he's just about as spanish as the u.s. russian from his footballing brain and if guys like that can step up and show the
11:12 pm
fans something special this russia team might actually put a dent in this tournament wow and that would be really amazing for the home team wouldn't everyone like to hear a story like that we did talk about saudi arabia though in the meantime because i mean perhaps this is a learning experience for them right i mean their defense at times they've really looked out of their depth so where does the team go from here well i don't think we're going to have to talk about saudi arabia for long because i think where they are going from here is out of this tournament at the earliest possible juncture that russia is probably maybe the second or maybe third best team in this group and they absolutely throttled v.s.o. now every other team that means egypt and would have why are going to be looking to stack up just as many goals against saudi arabia as russia did to get those goal difference is working in their favor and i just don't think saudi arabia are up to it i mean that second goal that they conceded where two defenders tried to slide tackle after one player both missed and the player was suddenly all alone in the
11:13 pm
box i mean. that something you just don't see at the highest level of professional football very often i want to talk about this highest level of professional football now because we have three games coming up tomorrow today there was only one we're really getting down to business so what's ahead three actually quite interesting games and as i mentioned there are two other teams in group and they will be squaring off against each other and egypt so you know a draw at the very least would be good they would not like to be on zero points along with saudi arabia then you know we also have a kind of an interesting game where it's hard to judge to be a clash of styles it's iran versus morocco a very defensive minded team against a team that loves to have the ball and show a lot of flair and then finally the big one that is portugal versus spain and that is also going to be very interesting because of what's happened with spain they fired their coach who then look after you know she took a job at real madrid after the tournament and they brought in fernando yetto who
11:14 pm
you see in the pictures here yet has only ever had one head coaching job at a second division spanish club he didn't get them promoted so he left the club and they're facing off against portugal the reigning european champions coached by fernando santos who's been their coach for four years who led them to that title this could be a tougher match for them than even expect them we expect you to tell us all about it right afterwards matter men at the very latest from our sports desk thank you so much. all there was plenty of action in the russian capital even before the opening game at the stadium that was hosting the spectacular opening ceremony fans lined the streets and filled the public viewing zones in moscow while the eighty thousand supporters inside the stadium we're treated to a guest of formants from the british pop star robbie williams. you. change your. way. and with that you are up to date now on news don't
