spain on day two of the world cup in russia the two powerhouses of group b. went head to head in a rollicking sing love fest with were naldo in a starring role and instinct classic between two all right sides. i'm sara kelly thanks for joining us we begin with what is proving to be a stress test for germany's coalition government chancellor angela merkel's authority is being publicly challenged by her interior minister horst. her position is hanging by a thread after they offer a member of her own conservative bloc and sister party the c.s.u. said that he wanted to implement a plan under which some migrants would be turned away at the german border americal
11:02 pm
has rejected that idea insisting instead on finding a joint european approach. angela merkel's governing coalition has begun to wobble over her refugee policy while her own conservative party the c.d.u. still backs are the bavarian conservatives the c.s.u. are in open rebellion despite attempts at finding a consensus c.s.u. leaders say a change in policy is needed now. the stream of illegal migrants to germany is a big problems of the before and the populace is very critical it's a political hot potato wherever we go we have to solve this problem now done medical hopes to negotiate european solutions of the migrant issue when e.u. leaders meet in brussels in two weeks' time he argues that germany shouldn't be acting on its own she offered a quote along the lines that international problems require international solutions . the world is highly integrated everything is too interconnected for any
11:03 pm
individual country to determine its destiny alone a very wise words. but the c.s.u. interior minister horse doesn't think a european solution is coming soon he wants germany to refuse entry to migrants registered in other e.u. countries and he may issue orders to that effect against miracles wishes the opposition thinks he's going too far. that's isis do not think the government is on thin ice that's obvious. this is another attempt from the right to being of the conservatives to launch a takeover. merkel's other coalition partners the social democrats are also irritated by the whole for the puzzle that he seems ready to risk bringing down the government. the argument between the c.d.u. in the c.s.u. is dramatic and is causing serious trouble i don't understand why this is happening
11:04 pm
because not long ago when we were putting together the coalition agreement we discussed this question of how to get a grip on the refugee problem if we can. time is running out for the two sides to reach a compromise if they don't wrangle america's government could be in serious trouble . and his chief political correspondent glenda crane is covering events and joins us now does this round melinda have the potential to unseat the chancellor it absolutely does if the interior minister follows through on his threat to act unilaterally on monday and essentially against the chancellor's wishes and basically move to reimpose border controls along some of germany's borders that essentially would demand that the chancellor fire him for
11:05 pm
for lack of lack of. essentially following a coalition policy because he signed up to a close coalition agreement that this would directly violate now theoretically she could simply condemn his move and issue a kind of warning to him but that seems unlikely where they essentially are going head to head on this we are told though that there is a feverish attempt to find a compromise so perhaps that will ensue over the weekend and ward off the prospect of the varying conservatives leaving the government coalition the coalition and no longer having a majority and essentially the government following which would lead to new elections absolutely so there's so much at stake for both of them if there is no compromise of as you've mentioned there and i one interesting element of this is of course that mr z. offer he is chairman of the bavarian sister party of merkel c.d.u. he should be one of the closest allies of her in the cabinet what is he in
11:06 pm
particular risking the downfall of a government just to make this point. they've had long simmering tensions over immigration policy that the varian conservatives often referred to as a sister party of america's c.d.u. they've been sisters at odds basically ever since two thousand and fifteen and that big influx of refugees because the bavarian conservatives simply didn't support the so-called open door policy but the reason for the current urgency and the reason for this absolute standoff is actually tactics of politics there's a local election coming up in the very end heartland of the conservative c.c.s. you and the c.s.u. wants to look very tough on immigration in order to ward off gains by the far right immigration party the f.t. so this is all about essentially tactics do you see any way out of the crisis
11:07 pm
melinda i think there is definitely room for some kind of face saving compromise it might take the shape of something whereby the chancellor would be given a couple of more weeks to look for a sustainable multilateral. solution in the run up to the european union summit that's to be held at the end of the month she has said there has to be a european solution that's the only solution that will business be sustainable in the long term so perhaps she would get the they would buy time but the c.s.u. simultaneously but would be told that they can move ahead at least on on rejecting any asylum seekers who do not have a correct right to asylum or and possibly on speeding up deportations because that was part of the coalition agreement but anything that looks like a unilateral german move in contravention of e.u. policy is going to be very problematic and i think there's no room for compromise
11:08 pm
