migration policy the standoff threatens to bring down germany's coalition government a mere three months after it took office. at the world cup argentina locked horns with iceland tiny iceland made it to the quarter finals of the euros two years ago could they match up to high flying argentina. i'm biased waiter and thanks for joining us people have been flooding onto the streets of the afghan capital kabul to celebrate a day after the taliban announced a surprise three day cease fire it was a rare sight as taliban fighters hugged and even took selfies with the soldiers and civilians they have been fighting afghan president musharraf's ghani said he would extend a parallel cease fire that his government announced on tuesday but did not say when it would start or for how long it would be in place.
9:02 pm
joining us now is the a journalist in kabul who have been following the story so ali after years of fighting against each other we suddenly see afghan soldiers and taliban fighters hugging a very rare scene is this all the all too good to be true what's behind this cease fire. that's exactly the question people are asking each other and i think we're all keeping very hopefully optimistic trying not to you know sort of question it too much and hoping that things continue in this way but it's actually a question people are asking themselves that's what's behind the cease fire getting there's a few things one thing is that repeatedly the government has that. the international community has said and i think the taliban is starting to realize that there is no military solution to this war we've seen that the taliban for instance today there were photos of taliban commanders meeting with a provincial governor from the western province of cut off which is a province they tried to take over only
9:03 pm
a few weeks ago they failed in doing so. and that again shows the lack of their capability at this point to take over large swaths of land the way they had wanted to or in the way that would lead them to be able to take over the country entirely as they did in one thousand nine hundred six we think it's really becoming evident to people that there has to be. a sort of a negotiated solution to this war because at this point no two militarily neither side is entirely winning so as you mentioned a negotiated solution might finally be in sight what's next after these cease fires is it maybe too soon to start talking about peace talks or is it now a real possibility. well so in the immediate future the next thing is to see what the taliban says to the president's willingness to extend his cease fire right because right now it's still back to being in till the end of tomorrow it's a two a cease fire but after tomorrow unless the taliban makes an announcement that they're going to extend their cease fire as well you know go back to being
9:04 pm
a unilateral cease fire so i think we have to go one step at a time so right now the next step is to see the taliban's reaction to what they think of the cease fire and how they were welcomed in every province of this. you know as you said they're taking pictures they're taking selfies right here in kabul only a few kilometers from the presidential palace so it's a major issue and we have to see how you know because the government has embraced this now we have seen the taliban is willing to embrace that as well now the somewhat celebrate for a mood here was overshadowed by a suicide bombing that targeted the celebrations an islamic state so-called i asked has claimed responsibility are they now the biggest threat in afghanistan so this is this is two parts of the same issue great is that right now taliban and the government during this time of cease fire even before had a common enemy in the so-called islamic state forces because the truth is that you know the taliban don't get along with these forces and if you speak to people who

are in areas that have come under i ask control so they left and come to other places the thing they say is the first thing that these quick of course is going to be die is the first thing that they do is they say you know we have to get rid of the taliban and once they get rid of the taliban and the turn against the people so there is definitely a real and miti between the taliban and irish and i think this could also be what leading them to the ceasefire possible negotiations saying that they're no longer alone and they have a real viable threat that's not only attacking them and trying to take over that their sorts of gains but also trying to attack the government. a journalist in kabul thank you so much for your insights. your german chancellor angela merkel is standing firm as a dispute over migration with one of her top ministers threatens to bring down her coalition government in a video message merkel reiterated her intention to seek a common european solution to illegal migration escalating standoff with her

interior minister horst hoffa he wants stricter border controls including turning back refugees who have already registered in other european countries or who have been turned down for asylum if no agreement is reached the german government could fall the chancellor faces an uphill battle here a brand new poll finds that fifty seven percent of germans oppose merkel's immigration policy did you ask people on the streets of berlin what they thought. i think it's very difficult i just apart i'll be very unfriend but i also must say i'm leaning more and march who are setting an upper limit we can't just keep on taking people in they're still saying that goes if a boat holds thirty people and there are fifty on board it sinks and no one benefits from that. from the i think the current crisis is that the c.s.u. is trying to implement their right wing ideology ahead of the state elections

because. this is still on talks that even have mixed kids my kids are white so you can imagine if you want you know i mean your country meaning you don't want your kids and. they didn't also know the car nurse ok but now it's got a bit too far and this is not their country once kids so we're doing well here and there are people who are worse off who come from other countries and they have the right to come here. this involved by and we're from a very a and i have to say we've always agreed with mr on most issues honestly i do not have to welcome every refugee to germany we feel linea to being surrounded by foreign us. do thirsting for the problem can only be solved through european consensus we are all partially responsible for the refugee crisis so we have to solve it together we cannot see lower country off as c.e.o. for seems to want to be just. point of the migration of

and this is the view that awaits them the port of valencia where almost a thousand volunteers are preparing for their arrival they'll be told not just welcome but welcome home. as the migrants who have high levels of stress they have lived through very traumatic experiences not only in the water but in the previous weeks and months they must be brought quickly to a safe harbor be welcomed treated with dignity and have their rights respected and . while italy and malta closed their ports but landsea is displaying its readiness to help. valencia city of refugees that's what it says. it's a humanitarian action that must be done. in the short term it's very positive. i mean it but the countries of the european union should agree. because this is not just up to a single player but the whole team. it's necessary to provide

a penalty but christian quade fired over the bar missing a golden opportunity then in the fifty ninth minute polson slotted home from a tight angle. and my people rw on the break and close and made no mistake to secure the victory. but the amount of this national with me in the studio cress harrington from your sport so this was a really big game for both teams wasn't it yes it was my you know a little bit bigger for peru given the fact they had not been in the world cup since one thousand nine hundred two this thirty six years and the country was dismissed ecstatic over the idea that their country was actually going to participate people quit their jobs there was reports of one guy one fan who gained twenty four kilos just to get an easy access ticket you know fancy food on floors and all these things you know denmark you know denmark missed out on the last world cup their last real cup was twenty ten so you had all of these emotions coming together and i did expected mark to come out on top there was one interesting thing

a background to this piece actually the story of this game the peruvian captain paolo guerrero is suppost was supposed to be serving a band did more players want an open letter to fee for asking for the players' clemency so you know it was a level playing field in that sense but you know denmark just proved too strong in the end and it was basically kind of slipped up i think about sportsmanship there and what were some of the game changing moments for you just as tony you know christian quaver christian quaver had an opportunity you know he missed a penalty i think we have a lot of that penalty if we can look it up you know there is you know being ready casper schmeichel between the posts and you see a little stutter step typically you know the striker does this to get the goalkeeper off and he does that the wrong way but i do. the ball is not supposed to go over a class is supposed to go between the posts and not well over you know something got a lucky souvenir but that's about it you know unfortunate because this had to hurt

the player and they were fighting them to the last minute of this particular match you know it looked like there was five extra minutes and the previous players were upset that the game was actually called so there was a little bit can of the confusion towards the end of that match but it was a nicely fought game from both sides as a just tough tough break for peru tough break now saturday of course also saw world cup first timers iceland take on the mighty argentina in group d. the south americans are known for their polished technique and came into this clash as the clear favorites but iceland with their scrappy physical style can never be ruled out. argentina broke the deadlock early on sergio aguero scoring the opener and then ninety minutes. but iceland came back just four minutes later with their first ever world cup go alfredsson bogus and this story. in the second half argentina put the pressure on forcing iceland in some mistakes and penalty for the favorites surely this would be the lead upset leo messi see
