this is the w. news live from berlin a glimpse of peace in afghanistan taliban fighters celebrate and take pictures with security forces and residents in the capital kabul as the government extends a ceasefire until after the holidays. also coming up. the migrant rescue ship that's become a flashpoint in europe's migration debates first italy denied it permission to dock and then malta now the aquarius nears the end of its long voyage as it prepares to dock in spain. another world cup argentina locked horns with iceland
10:01 pm
tiny iceland made it to the quarter finals of the euros two years ago could they match up to high flying argentina. i'm irish waiter thanks for joining us people have been flooding onto the streets of the afghan capital kabul to celebrate a day after the taliban announced a surprise three day cease fire it was a rare sight as taliban fighters hugs and even took selfies with the soldiers and civilians they have been fighting afghan president from gandhi said he would extend a parallel cease fire that his government announced on tuesday but did not say when it would start or for how long it would be in place. the a journalist in kabul has been following the story so ali after years of fighting against each other we suddenly see afghan soldiers and taliban fighters hugging
10:02 pm
a very rare scene is this although too good to be true what's behind this cease fire. that's exactly the question people are asking each other and i think we're all keeping very hopefully optimistic trying not to you know sort of question it too much and hoping that things continue in this way but it's certainly question people are asking themselves as for what's behind the cease fire getting there's a few things one thing is that repeatedly the government has that. international community has said and i think the taliban is starting to realize that there is no military solution to this war we've seen that the taliban for instance today there were photos taliban commanders meeting with a provincial governor from the western province of top off which is a province they tried to take over only a few weeks ago they failed in doing so. and that again shows the lack of their capability at this point to take over large swaths of land the way they had wanted to or in the way that would lead them to be able to take over the country entirely
10:03 pm
as they did in one thousand nine hundred six so i think it's really becoming evident to people that there has to be. a sort of a negotiated solution to this war because at this point no two militarily neither side is entirely winning so as you mentioned a negotiated solution might finally be in sight what's next after these cease fires is it maybe too soon to start talking about peace talks or is it now a real possibility. well so in the immediate future the next thing is to see what the taliban says to the president's willingness to extend his cease fire right because right now it still back to being in till the end of tomorrow is a two a cease fire but after tomorrow unless the taliban makes an announcement that they're going to extend their cease fire as well you know go back to being a unilateral cease fire so i think we have to go one step at a time so right now the next step is to see the taliban's reaction to what they think of this cease fire how they were welcomed in every province of this. you know
10:04 pm
i actually said they're taking pictures they're taking selfies right here in kabul only a few kilometers from the presidential palace so it's a major issue and we have to see how you know because the government has embraced this now we have seen the taliban is willing to embrace that as well now the somewhat celebrator a mood here was overshadowed by a suicide bombing that targeted the celebrations an islamic state called i asked has claimed responsibility are they now the biggest threat in afghanistan so this is this is two parts of the same issue great is that right now taleban and the government during this time of cease fire even before had a common enemy in diapers in the so-called islamic state forces because the truth is that you know the taliban don't get along with these forces and if you speak to people who are in areas that have come under i ask control so they've left and come to other places the thing they say is the first thing that these quick of course is
10:05 pm
going to be die is the first thing that they do is they say you know we have to get rid of the taliban and once they get rid of the taliban and they turn against the people so there is definitely a real and miti between the taliban and irish and i think this could also be what leading them to the cease fire and possible negotiations seeing that they're no longer alone and they have a real viable threat that's not only attacking them and trying to take over that they're sorts of gains but also trying to attack the government. journalist in kabul thank you so much for your insights now to a migrant ship that's become a flashpoint in the european debate over migration the aquarius carrying hundreds of people is there to dock in spain in the coming hours after being denied permission by first italy and then malta spanish and french authorities have announced they will work together to process the people on board as our next report shows it's just the latest step in a long ordeal. on board the aquarius hundreds of weary migrants

protests began in april. a major fire has torn through the glasgow school of art in scotland for the second time in four years firefighters worked through the night after the bridge blaze ravaged the macintosh building one of the country's most famous pieces of architecture the building had been due to reopen next year after a multi-million pound restoration. in the third world cup game on saturday denmark came away with a crucial one nothing victory over protrude just before half time denmark's use of polson it brought down addison flores in the box and the referee awarded a penalty. christian quick a fired over the bar missing a golden opportunity. then in the fifty ninth minute polson slotted home from a tight angle that mark be proof on the break and paulson made no mistake to secure the victory. with him on his nationality studio with me is chris harrington from
10:10 pm
the sport so this was a big game for both teams wasn't debt it was a big game for both teams because it's a factory and it's been a while for peru having been in a world cup it's been thirty six years in denmark they've missed out on their last world cup so it meant something for both sides and it was an evenly fought battle tooth and nail through actually have more shots one goal but you know the data side just had too much and we saw you supposing i mean that was obviously a sweet and you know to his early fate in terms of a penalty you know but denmark has been improving as of late and i did expect him to prevail in this match up you know despite you know prue having a lot of quality on their side so it was a great fight and the better team one of the and what were some of the game changing moments for you yeah this mitchell mistake act a look at christian quaver christian quaver you know was taken down by use of poles and he actually had a penalty to take and as strikers do you know they try to gather themselves and
10:11 pm
focus and that's a quick date he had a little stutter step but as you can see here the stutter step the goalkeeper michael dunn's run away with the ball goes the wrong direction as well about a good kid meters over the goal post not even yes so that's tough you know it's bittersweet because so many fans have to see indeed one russia from peru some people quit their jobs you know it's been a crazy turn out put all that on they will live to fight another day you know they will have to obviously make up some of their ground but a tough break and then tough way to go out for a quaver their naval saturday also saw world cup first timers iceland take on the mighty argentina in group d. and the south americans are known for their polished technique and came into the clash is the clear favorite but iceland with their scrappy physical sile can never be rolled out. aaj and tina broke the deadlock utterly on sergio aguero scoring the opening and then ninety minutes. but iceland came back just four minutes later with
10:12 pm
that first ever world cup go out for team bogus in this school run by. in the second ha argentina put the pressure on to see iceland in some mistakes and penalty for the favorites surely this would be the lead upset me a messy see behind us how the sun and the fans they save it it's like you win. as the minutes counts of down messi try to is lucky he can but it was to know avail one zero of the final score as iceland was quite the upset. this is about to be a simple matter argentina wasn't as it was i mean on paper you have to look at the runners up the last for a couple argentina plus with magic man messi you're supposed to beat this team but iceland clearly are still driving hard off of their successful european championship and we saw the ice man offered both his son you know who had a chance to talk to proctor this world cup he was geared up and ready to play and
10:13 pm
we saw that play out on the pitch you know they're truly a team iceland unlike argentina they have the star messi and then you have you know the other parts who are good players in the right but team prevailed in the in the den i know different styles there and what about lionel messi is performance they have the star you know. look at the stats to see exactly how bad he was missing ok he had eleven shots on goal all right you know that's pretty bad you know and then the penalty i mean you have to give it up you know for how this and how his how the son made some quality stops and then just to make that he stop messi he's you know sleeping tonight like a hero his middle name is thor so it's a perfect fit for the iceland you know fame but in terms of messi you have to kind of compare his performance to that of chris shot over naldo. cristiano ronaldo they're always mentioned in the same breath he was with ads for a messy having this performance he's going to have to really you know step it up
10:14 pm
and just play like we all know that he can he spoke to reporters he said naturally it hurts he does have a feeling of responsibility he felt that he could have given his team three points but they will you know suit the boots up to play again it will i'm sure we'll see better things from messi cress harrington from our sports desk thank you so much ok . and finally for some people there's nothing like a vintage automobiles to stir the soul and for others it's tractors and there is yes in the polish town of mill no host to the international rally of older tractors on saturday the show started dozens of models dating back to the one nine hundred forty s. outfitted with a range of extra options including side cars and exposed hot rod engines which attracted plenty of attention from spectators. there. you're watching v.w. news more coming up at the top of the hour don't forget you can always check out
