3:01 pm
a hard fought contest for president rich uptight heir to one who is facing his biggest electoral challenge in fifteen years of ruling the country. and germany live to find another day as the world com this gold with moments to spare and kept hope alive for the defending champion germany now have a long group stage match left to prove they're worthy of advancing into the next round. thanks for joining us that marion evans dean even leaders are gathering in brussels at this hour for an emergency mini summit over migration german chancellor angela merkel is facing a don't mistake crisis over the issue she's under pressure from within her own government to find a european approach to asylum and refugee policy at the e.u. level. several countries have reintroduced border controls to stop the flow of
3:02 pm
migrants or central european states taking and especially hardline approach are snubbing the meeting merkel and other leaders have said that today's talks will not to yield any agreement but are merely a working meeting ahead of a full of summit later in the in the week. a let's have a listen now to want chancellor merkel had to say as she arrived at the meeting in brussels. to discontinue the progress we are disgusting discussing these issues in your interest in the european council but we also know in the european council we're not going to be able to find overall solution to the migration problem and that's why what it's about two years final time bilateral trilateral agreements for our mutual benefit looking at how we can support one another in this crisis is not always waiting for all twenty eight member states but looking at who needs what i mean what is important to whom and this is the search for motorists with india and
3:03 pm
at the same time working towards looking for a european foundation to solving the problems that the focus of our work force will continue in all the days to come this is a working consultations session and in the initial exchange and he was not more and not less but in terms of the question of whether in the next few days we may reach bilateral or trilateral agreements and find more common ground that this meeting is very important for that thank you very much. all right that was the german chancellor angela merkel speaking a short time ago for more on this e.u. meeting in brussels we're joined now here in the studio by peter craven our political correspondent and barber of easel who is standing by in brussels so hello to both of you barbara i'd like to begin with you now we just mentioned that four of the e.u. countries are not taking part in today's meeting so if not everybody is present
3:04 pm
what exactly are they hoping to achieve today. it doesn't mean that the eastern european countries so the vision for our country has been particularly didn't come it doesn't really mean very much because they don't participate in future migration policy anyway they might get try to block certain solutions but they don't really have anything to contribute and in particularly they're not willing to take any migrants in so then not really players in the game some other smaller countries didn't come because they hardly have any migrants there are not really concerned portugal cyprus for instance and so everybody is that the table in brussels who does have people or who has people who is a transit country and who is interested and gets a participant in a common solution and this is an american center trying to prepare the ground for the biggest solution that needs to be found next week and it is a very difficult very fraught meeting because the differences between the countries
3:05 pm
and the national it gets his and that sort of clash here are considerable well barbara you mentioned these differences within the different countries can you outline for us what are the differences among different e.u. nations. france for instance likes to give policy advice but president mccrum is very careful and not opening his harbor for instance for the further rescue boat that is just sort of cruising around in the mediterranean and trying the lifeline trying to find a harbor that will take it in so he sort of plays a double double game in a way but he does support anglo-american because he wants to keep her in office and the new spanish prime minister pedro sanchez tries to sort of keep humanitarian values up and then we have italy on the other hand who says we're fed up we're not going to take in another soul this is done with us we're finished we're not going to take people back or in and we're not we're not sort of making deals that are to
3:06 pm
our descent vantage and that in particular is very difficult for them going to market because she needs to make a deal because it's really and i can't really see what that could look like now peter i'd like to talk to you about germany and its particular position and situation uncle americal is facing quite a lot of pressure at the moment from within her own government support to get more hold on migration tell us what's at stake for merkel but she's facing a veritable rebellion back at home in germany the varian hardline interior minister horses the whole thing has issued an ultimatum that is the word has been used he has put a gun to uncle americans head those are words that are also being used here in germany and he has said you go to next weeks to well today to the big summit this is the small summit the preparatory summit you go to the big summit at the end of the week thursday and friday in brussels again and you bring back a prime european solution to the migration problems that we're all facing here in europe something that hasn't happened in three years or else and what is or or he
3:07 pm
says that he's going to put close the border the varian border of the south of germany and begin to turn refugees away that would be a going it alone stands for germany and uncle america wants to avoid that at all costs and that division of political philosophies could actually lead to the brake . of the german coalition government all right so you say they hope for is demanding a pan european solution to this problem but just how likely is that can this kind of summit give merkel the help and the solution that she needs while i do think to certainly not going to emerge from today today is all about thomas very experience of the next summit later in the week i think you know we had barbara talking about the possibility of bilateral agreements that's one way that i'm glad merkel wants to go she wants to sign biological or a bilateral agreements with the arrival countries with the front line countries like it's especially it's only greece and malta but they're proving very very resistant indeed they're saying why should we brew taking any more refugees this hole and the solution it looks likely is going to be money indeed well one of the
3:08 pm
things that's been put on the table bob the french president my concept yesterday that those you countries who are not prepared to pull their weight when it comes to taking in migrants should to have their ego benefits cut are these kinds of measures likely to be implemented. that's difficult to say but anger has been quite strong on the side of the market and among them a crime and some of those evolved the far eastern european countries to call a so-called countries who have absolutely i mean adamantly just refuse to take in even a handful of people and talk about christian heritage and all sorts of nonsense which isn't really the issue here but this is straight line populist policies and so they . are the arguing the argument the argument from across side the american side goes we should have shown you so much solidarity's billions have flown and are still flowing into those countries and this is the way you grew borders and you blocking
3:09 pm
solutions that are unnecessary so we're going to punish you ever happens i don't new but the discussion is on and has been on for a while all right barbara visa reporting for us from brussels and peter craven here in the studio many thanks to both of you now voting is under way in turkey's presidential and parliamentary elections president richard and his party are fighting a tight race into one cast of ballot earlier today he needs to win more than fifty percent of the vote to avoid a runoff his main competition comes from the engine of the secular republican people's party he's galvanized the opposition with huge campaign rallies around the country in recent weeks. on t.w. correspondent dorian jones joins us now from a polling center in istanbul hello to you dorian so give us
3:10 pm
a sense of how the voting has been going so far. well voters have been streaming into this voting station since it opened at eight in the morning the old the there really is a surge of votes that have been going through this station and turkey does have a long tradition of a very high voter participation over eighty percent among the highest in the world but that level could be surpassed because both sides see this election as probably the most important in the country's history whoever wins the presidency will inherit sweeping powers allowed to rule by decree greater control over the judiciary and the much reduced power of parliament even the position of a prime minister is abolished now supporters insist that it is necessary to take this country forward to meet the challenges of the opponents the opposition is tantamount to an electorate dictatorship and they say that democracy itself is on the ballot a lot of tension ahead of this vote now given the high stakes for dorian we have
3:11 pm
been hearing some allegations of vote rigging that's coming from the mainly kurdish regions in the southwest just how serious are these allegations. well we have seen a video which purports to show people dumping large number of votes into a ballot box that video has gone a wild far across social media but supremely true board has been very quick to react to this they admit they have this election they say they are investigating it immediately and will take action if required all the reports of vote stuffing in other areas of turkey could only could be southeast much of that is under military control but as of yet it does appear these are isolated incidents at the moment international monitors have issued interim statements saying that as of yet there are no serious concerns over the way this photo is being handled but it will fuel fuel fears among the opposition they remember last year's referendum which extended the presidential powers in the country that was narrowly passed amid massive voter
3:12 pm
fraud allegations and the fear is that that too could be repeated again in this crucial election they are mobilizing supporters over half a million voter monitors all across the country are watching this civic society are also backing those efforts and the chief challenger to. the one said that he's to clear the mobilization of all his supporters for the next thirty six hours all right correspondent dorian jones reporting from istanbul thank you. well now to the world cup soccer and germany fans can be forgiven for a feeling of relief that their team is alive to fight another day but it's just about time already to turn attention to next wednesday's match with a tight race in group f. it may well take a convincing victory against south korea to ensure passage of the world comes round of sixteen. germany

started furiously pinning sweden back right from the start but lacked precision in front of goal. and they lacked perception in their passing to tony close as misplaced ball gave sweden an opportunity to supply striker all of toivonen who made no mistake sweden the head against the run of play and germany in deep trouble and what a second half they played three minutes in and marco royce netted the equaliser germany up their tempo and created chance after chance but failed to capitalize but then and next set back strong boateng was sent off after his second yellow card run we were a man down for the last ten fifteen minutes but even then we did not stop playing football as we switched a couple of positions and then told the strike on his luck and he say. a tony cross free kick in the ninety fifth minute saved both the day and the world cup for germany brilliant dream team teed up by marco royce turned tony cross from zero to
3:14 pm
hero. well it was a nerve wracking saturday evening for fans of the german soccer team but the man shot survived against sweden and beat them in the dying moments to keep their world hope world cup hopes alive let's have a look at how the game played out. by mission accomplished in sochi tony crosses ninety fifth minute when it kept germany's title defense alive but the match winning knows that the next judgement day is already around the corner it was once only a time and we need to recover now we don't have much time till the next game then we'll have to beat south korea beat them and phatak lee as there are scenarios where a simple win isn't enough to qualify so we'll have to give everything from the start and make better use of our chances. like the chances of us. outside the stadium fans will also already looking ahead to wednesday's matches. do not like the man
3:15 pm
shot the team just great and i'm convinced both sweden and germany will progress both of us. i hate that that is not a feel right now but we will want to get back to guide across germany scenes of joy accompanied the last gasp win but they'll have to be back on wednesday for the next nail biter. we speak different languages we fight for different things that's fine let me also make up for freedom freedom of speech and freedom of press. giving freedom. global news that matters d. w. made for mines.
