this is you know reviews live from berlin the hope for migrants circuit city for days after their rescue ship was refused entry to european courts the lifeline now has permission to dock in malta after other even ations offer to accept some of the hundreds of people on board also coming up big when the u.s. supreme court upholds president donald trump's travel ban on several muslim majority countries but judges warn the white house should also protect religious freedom and tolerance plus detente eritrean diplomats visit ethiopia as the two
6:01 pm
neighbors seek to resolve decades of hostility i'll ask an expert if the bold initiative by ethiopia's new prime minister will pay off and in the world cup group c. played out their final matches as france and denmark squared off while australia needed a win but struggled against a peru's side already out of the tournament all the action coming right out. thank you very much for your company everyone. italy's prime minister just sepic conti has announced that the latest migrant risk your ship to be turned away by several european countries including his own will be allowed to dock in malta malta has also previously turned away the lifeline but now it says it will join other european nations and accepting some of the two hundred migrants on board. these
6:02 pm
migrants odyssey might soon be over france and italy have negotiated with multi to let the rescue ship lifeline dock in biloxi but the crew hasn't received official confirmation yet the ship has been stuck at seasons last thursday with two hundred thirty three migrants on board it's not going through the door through i'm going to have a tough course it's terrible to be on a ship for days it can get wet annoying when the way. you can get seasick when all you want to do is reach safety. strides and missed but there was progress in the case of hundred eight migrants rescued by the danish cargo ship oleksandr mask who were allowed to disembark and cicely's put salo last night we didn't use him but it's unbelievable this took place spent hours and days on the ship without any developments italy's interior minister wants to keep the country's ports closed to rescue ships in the future protecting the use external borders is the italian
6:03 pm
government's main priority. well i'm now joined by nicholas says some confirm a sea washing nonprofit organization that conducts search and rescue operations in the mediterranean he is at the port his invalid i should say malta and has been in touch with staff from the lifeline the stranded vessel carrying more than two hundred thirty migrants are very good evening nicholas what have you heard from the crew the people on board the lifeline about malta that has now permission to dock. hello and good evening. yeah we've been in contact with the ship but so far there's no clear statements from monitor that they're allowed to go in so we also heard through the media that some countries that's that they might accept migrants but so far we don't have any confirmation from my son seems like that mother is waiting for a clear. statement from the states that they would definitely take those migrants
6:04 pm
which doesn't look like now so so far we have no confirmation that the lifeline it's not going to court so still in the limbo france and germany have pledged to take in some of the people from that both are these countries the european union countries doing enough. definitely not so we're seeing that political troubles. definitely affecting those migrants for example we heard from a competition from upon the terrain in germany that some german states for example hamburg on your bike some would accept those migrants but that's their problem for the coalition and that highlight what excuse me the offer. would blocking that decision so far we don't have any clear statements about that. because in the meantime migrants are left caught in the middle of all of this diplomatic route
6:05 pm
between e.u. countries in terms of policy how important is it to go beyond just saving the next boat reaching european shores in your view. so like all the work of n.g.o.s is basically like and what goes on like the statement of desperation so the european union is not being enough at all that's actually the state works to save those migrants and those private vessels are basically just getting a gap that the government for leaving there and we are like always asking for safe passages safe ways to ask for asylum without making the static trip. nicholas m.p.'s from the wash thank you for joining us yes you're welcome. and now to other news u.s. president donald trump is celebrating a major victory the supreme court has upheld his travel ban which blocks people from several mostly muslim countries from entering the u.s.
6:06 pm
signing the ban into law was one of the first things from did after taking office the move triggered protests across the u.s. and cause chaos at airports the initial ban was struck down by a lower court but in the minute version went into force last december the supreme court ruled the ban does not discriminate against muslims and the u.s. president gave his initial reaction on twitter shortly after the ruling was announced he were to supreme court upholds trump travel ban wow. all right let's cross over now to washington where w.'s claire richardson is standing by all right we heard the wow the reaction from trump there in that tweet how significant is this victory for the u.s. president claire. hyla this is a major victory for president donald trump as you've seen from his reaction just there he can hardly believe it himself he also came out and said it was
6:07 pm
a moment of profound vindication for his policy over democrats in the media which he has criticized repeatedly and indeed this is a key pillar of his foreign policy has been too hard in the united states borders crackdown on immigration and he's very much going to claim this as a success in his campaign promises now it's also a big statement about presidential powers the challengers in this case had said that he had gone too far and overstepped his authority with this travel ban but justice roberts disagreed it said that the presidents have substantial power to regulate immigration and that trump was ok in doing what he's done with this travel ban that being said worth remembering that this is the third iteration of the ban the first two it came to notoriety early on in his presidency when we saw scenes of chaos in airports came to be known as the muslim travel ban so this third version is much less than what he originally wanted to do however it's still enough that he's going to be able to claim as a political victory now this ruling is
6:08 pm
a major defeat for groups who campaigned against the ban let's take a listen claire to one reaction outside the supreme court. with this decision we are concerned that donald trump will move beyond the five mosul majority countries that are in the current version to not only target more country but we can surely even go after u.s. citizens and lawful permanent residents. we call on all americans to join with us in standing up to this a good we just policy. where are those fears founded. i mean many minority groups in the united states have said repeatedly that they feel threatened by the united states the u.s. and most administrations rhetoric in the policies coming out of the white house and certainly with this move they're afraid that donald trump is going to be emboldened by the court's ruling usually the court meant to be a check on the executive branch that is essentially said that the president does
6:09 pm
have this power to regulate immigration in the way that he has in practical terms this is going to prevent people from muslim majority muslim majority countries from coming to the united states and human rights activists have called it a disaster they say it's going to mean people are going to be stuck in countries plagued by war it's going to prevent families from being able to reunite and of course that is going to legitimize discrimination. a clear as a supreme court. ruling. travel down the u.s. government walk back another plank of its immigration policy tell us more about that that's right trump spent under major pressure this week because of the separations of children from their parents at the u.s. border the u.s. government taking kids away from their parents as part of the trumpet ministrations plan to prosecute anyone who enters the united states illegally now officials have just said for now they are no longer going to prosecute parents who come to the
6:10 pm
united states with children at least temporarily but i've been talking to immigration lawyers here who are still very concerned that the government has been using these separations the fact that children have been taken away from their parents as i mean it too as a weapon against asylum seekers and you can hear more about that in this report that i filed. they were taken away from their families out the border. now some lawyers say the u.s. government is preying on their parents' desperation to see them again. and many of them had been kidnapped raped tortured but again they said over and over that paled in comparison to the pain and desperation that they felt being separated from their children as a result many of them were really considering signing voluntary departure starting the deportation process so that they could get out of detention as soon as possible and they had been told by agents that if they signed a voluntary departure that ice would reunite them with their children as quickly as
6:11 pm
possible for us we heard that consistently and over over and over again to the point that we really feel that the administration is holding these children hostage to dissuade people from pursuing compelling and strong asylum cases. after nationwide outrage over family separations u.s. president donald trump to public pressure and announced an end to the policy but his reversal does nothing for the children still inside shelters like this one in southern california this is one of the more established shelters for migrant children here in san diego and it looks after boys between the ages of six and seventeen now it's been doing that for years for children who arrived in the united states unaccompanied by a parent but the difference now is that it is also caring for children who were intentionally separated from their parents when they arrived in the united states as you can see behind me it is covered in fencing and green netting all the way around the perimeter to make sure that nobody can see out and nobody can see and. the government agency that contract this temporary shelter refused my request to go
6:12 pm
inside but they released this footage showing children's bedrooms a medical center with painted walls and a place to play soccer critics say this is the best case scenario for detaining children and that conditions elsewhere in the country are likely far worse. reuniting them with their parents will be a slow and difficult process some children might even be forced into foster care orphaned by the u.s. government. that report from the washington correspondent claire richardson we want to bring you up to date now with some of the other stories making news around the world. the u.n. says at least forty five thousand people have fled airstrikes and ground fighting in syria is the raw province it comes as the government steps up its campaign against rebels in the country's southwest observers say regime air strikes in the region have killed dozens of civilians in the past week. argentina
6:13 pm
has been paralyzed by national strikes over president. sturdy measures organizers said at least a million workers took part in the protest the twenty four hour strike saw garbage lying uncollected on the street and brought public transport to a standstill. at the world cup see has now a group c. has now been decided and joining me in the studio to discuss the latest is amalie russia's from sport good to see you. tell us about the big game france against denmark france against denmark it was all set up for a big game france already in the top of their group and they had already earned their spot in the knockout stages but for denmark things were still looking very tight they had everything to lose in this game but also everything to win the game however was not so exciting there was just not a lot happening in theory both teams could rely on a draw and that's exactly what they settled for they came in france was the better
6:14 pm
team denmark really relied on defending but there were not so many groups fighting seems that the fans had hoped for in the end france and denmark secured their spot through and it's a pity that denmark didn't go for the often because due to the results in the other game in the second half the cliff already gone more and also as they had by then secured basically secured their spot in the knockout stages two and austria missed their chance yeah that's very disappointing the socceroos are flying home they needed to win by all means and in the end that's not what happened proved it was their first world cup in thirty six years the fans and everyone were stoked to be there and it was them to clear lead with an early goal in the eighteenth minute by under korea and they were just the better team in the spain they played us trillions had their chances well the crew really showed their fighting spirit and that's why they added another one in the second half to make it two zero it was paulo get it or we scored in the fiftieth minute and that was the final score was
6:15 pm
an exciting game to watch but that means who in australia they said goodbye to the world cup in russia all right and now another brick two whose fate is hanging in the balance is of course argentina playing where today yet lino messi and his team mates i mean they really have to step up it was a very disappointing world cup for them so far and all eyes will be on them whether they. and still make it to the knockout stages if we have a look at the table here argentina our last i mean these are the finalists of the world cup two thousand and fourteen in brazil and their last in their group they're facing elimination what they have to do they're playing nigeria they have to win and then they have to hope that iceland doesn't be cray sure that would be their way through but again that's not sure yet anything can happen at this world cup there have been so many upsets and there's been a little bit of unrest in the argentinian team camp because there are fans and even team apparently calling for their coach or to some to be fired that didn't happen he's still there but apparently the team has taken control there were twitter
6:16 pm
videos coming up from their most recent training and he was showing the experienced players like players like how he had mascherano you know messi showing the coach what the tactics should be like what the lineup should be like so it seems that the team has just taken control and they're going to do what they want we'll see i think it will either be a smashing window either one three four zero or they'll go out to have a very convincing comfort i don't know but let's hope we'll wait and see read the tea leaves for us how could i after tonight the next round look like france secured the top spot so they're going to play the second of argentina's group now that could still be argentina which would be of course be a huge game but it could also still be iceland or nigeria so france still have a choice kind of who they're going to play well not really a choice but they have to wait and see croatia are likely to be first in their group so they're going to face denmark there's still a slight chance for nigeria to take the spot top spot but again christian denmark is what looks likely to happen aren't i mean harsh words from two governors were thank you as always you.

the tweets are coming thick and fast today american president revving up his twitter account with harley davidson moving factories overseas because of tariffs mr trump is tweeting that holly is using that as an excuse you trade commission as the senior monk strong giving her two cents. you have to be consequences if you don't respect international rules. the harley davidson an iconic american brand and now a symbol of u.s. president donald trump's protectionist trade policy. decision to impose tariffs on the motorcycles came after washington introduced levies on steel and aluminum imports. but instead of stepping on the america first bandwagon harley davidson responded by saying it would ship some production overseas. unsurprisingly that didn't go down too well with the protectionist president in characteristically
6:18 pm
fiery tweeze he rose harley must know that they won't be able to sell back into the united states without paying a big tax. trump also claimed that harley davidson had decided to move jobs from kansas city abroad before the e.u. introduced to a toiletry tyrant's the motorcycle maker denies this is the case. among those criticizing trans trade dispute with the european union is the governor of wisconsin where harley davidson is based scott walker tweeted that a no tolerance policy would be good for wisconsin money factor is and farmers. but as a tit for tat trade spot continues there could well be more tariffs on the road ahead . is planning to slash shifts at its german plants the automaker is struggling to prepare for stricter emissions testing beginning september first new cars have to pass along complex emissions testing process
6:19 pm
before being sold for more the head of the announcement that the preparations could lead to production over the past as vehicles stay in storage longer working we could be w. factories of both spoke and said to be shortened by one or two days throughout the third quarter. a german commission has recommended raising the minimum wage next year from eight euros eighty four to nine euros nineteen the idea is to boost private consumption in europe's biggest economy the german government is widely expected to ok the proposals which include the hike in twenty twenty employees have been required to pay minimum wage in germany since twenty fifth. to bring in financial correspondent to frankfurt tell our viewers just how successful the minimum wage has been in germany since twenty fifth day. well when the minimum wage discussion has been very controversial here for a long time there are some people who are saying that the money is still not enough
6:20 pm
with nine years nineteen a full time employee in a supermarket for example would make about one thousand four hundred euros before taxes so after texas around one thousand euro for a full time job this might work but in you know in very expensive cities like frankfurt berlin or munich you are still with this amount of money at the poverty level the other problem is that you would still get almost the same money with the benefits you receive when you are unemployed so many say that the financial incentive with this is not high enough talking from the business perspective ben many see the minimum wage as even dangerous with the potential that jobs could get lost and that certain services like getting your hair cut might get too pricey and even that's getting more expensive here in berlin along with red stand you but what about migrants there's been a discussion that the minimum wage is a ready prevented many of their many refugees from getting into work yeah exactly you're mentioning there
6:21 pm
a very important topic integrating migrants in the normal working lives here in germany it's a very challenging task many don't speak german which excludes them already from many jobs and in many cases lots of training is also necessary that's why critics say that in those cases the minimum wage is even too high also experts have noticed that since the minimum wage was extermination two thousand and fifteen the black labor number has been going up so bad yet so really a controversial topic when you go for us there at the frankfurt stock exchange. back to lay the ray of hope in east africa a lot of people are banking on this development eritreans are some of the most prominent vibrance trying to reach europe but peace overtures from eritrea is neighbor ethiopia could improve conditions in the this is east africa nation eritrean diplomats have traveled to disavow offer talks following an invitation from ethiopian prime minister ahmed the talks underway now have raised hope that decades of conflict and hostility between the two neighbors could be drawing to an

end. i. this is bad may in one thousand nine hundred ninety eight. after every tracey's a territory it launched a fierce offensive to keep its southern neighbor ethiopia from the town. it would all be in vain in the end after heavy casualties on both sides. ethiopia want to string of military victories which saw its troops move into the disputed territory . the conflict between the two countries left tens of thousands dead or injured in the space of just two years. as the war spread so did the massive displacement of communities today many eritreans are among the migrants risking the dangerous journey in the hopes of making it to europe. many are fleeing the country because of compulsory military service that is being described by human rights groups as harsh the eritrean government says it forces conscription because it needs a constant large army to defend itself in the conflict with ethiopia. but the talks
6:23 pm
between the two sides could move the conflict towards a peaceful resolution pulling a peace gesture from addis ababa. under the new prime minister if the o.p.'s says it will recognize a two thousand and two ruling on the border between the two countries part of the ruling hand of the border town of bad may to eritrea. well are joining me now here in our berlin studio is. she is the president of the german african foundation a very warm welcome is good to have you here with us is this a potential breakthrough in bilateral relations between eritrea and ethiopia well i hope so because this is indeed a historic moment. personally i'm very happy because after all it is by second homes so to say i moved there for quite some time but i haven't been there
6:24 pm
for the last fifteen years so everybody who is familiar with the horn of africa has waited for this day to come that every trains and she opens i'm knitting and thanks to the new prime minister that t. in his inaugural speech invited eritreans and excepted the border ruling which was decided the hague commission the boundary commission some years ago i think this was so far the stumbling step you have for the area trains and now he accepted and want to implement the decision and i think this opened the door for the eritreans to accept two to come to address so because they have been peace efforts in the past but you think this time is different. well to my knowledge there have not been by letter a diplomatic meetings within the last two decades yeah there are no
6:25 pm
embassies in either site so there were no official meetings and this indeed is the first really honest effort that i that i know of. saw in our report we're also talking about lot of young eritreans trying to make the perilous journey to europe you've lived in eritrea talk to us a little bit describe what life is like for a young eritrean well it is it is a small country the conditions are so to say i mean from from climate climate wise but the reason why area trains are fleeing their country i think there are two one is that there is this military conscription and people young people have to stay in the army without knowing when they can leave this is one group and the other group
6:26 pm
is that the dissidents are not welcomed well this is very and mike lee said they there is they are polluted to prisoners and i think dissidents who do not agree with the policy they cannot really speak their mind so they also leave their country in order not to be put in jail so i think these if these two problems lose and so to say by now this open politics of the earth you openside it might encourage every train site to follow a similar path i would hope so just very briefly ten seconds so you think eritrea will become less repressive than it is at the moment well the reasons for being repressive are now loosening so i think. we it is the first step. in the right direction and i hope at the end there will be peace and stability and
