i am. this is you know we news live from berlin syrian criticism a federal judge in the u.s. orders a nationwide and the family separations at the mexican border all this and seventeen americans to sue the trumpet ministration over the treatment of children sings putting them from their parents is causing quote devastating harm also coming up the syrian army opens a new front in its war against rebels causing tens of thousands to flee the violence but with borders close to them where on earth these children and others like them supposed to go look at the human cost of the syrian government offensive
5:01 pm
. on little rock it's great to have you along everyone where we start off in the united states where after weeks of public outcry and intense media scrutiny a federal judge has ordered that children separated from their parents at the us mexico border must be reunited with their families within a month the ruling follows weeks of outrage that last week of forced president trumps had to walk back his administration's policy of splitting up migrant families who cross into the u.s. illegally. it's un-american it's immoral and it's ego in fire late constitutional rights of all americans another legal blow dealt to trump zero tolerance policy separated families must be reunited within thirty days children under five fourteen

days and a nationwide injunction against any future family break ups there were protests clashes and even arrests in l.a. outside the hotel when attorney general jeff sessions the man behind one of washington's most controversial policies defended the hardline stance in the name of public safety. all of us that are here are not native american and we are integrating this so by words that sell embarrassing. parts of our history we are meeting in. washington under pressure to abolish the immigration protocol the cooled ruling was printed off to seventeen states found suit takings the policy is unconstitutional denying immigrants due process and the right to seek asylum stay say they've been forced to do a huge increase in child custody costs they call for transparency the public must know the true price of the sinful separation. could have

a lot of happy people this comes just one week off to trump signed an executive order that would keep families who illegally cross the us mexico border together as they await immigration proceedings as border officials struggle to reunite families more than two thousand children remain in camps some hundreds of miles away from their parents who claim that when they were wrong the number given to reach their children they were met with adult turn or no answer at all. all right let's to unpack here would be to the corresponding maya shrader who joins me here for lots more maya federal just stepping into this already very contentious immigration. what does this ruling concretely mean for families who were already split up that's actually one of the big questions of late so the thing about the executive order that trump signed was it ended separating families of the border
5:04 pm
but it did not specifically say also families who are been split up can be reunited so this ruling does do that however there is still no concrete plan in place for exactly how to do this and there's been a lot of hay made out of the fact that when someone is arrested they go to jail they get a receipt for where their wallet is from where their car is where the person possessions are in these parents at the border have no idea where their kids have gone a lot of them haven't even had a phone call or many many cases these kids are thousands of miles away from where their parents are being detained so this ruling what it does is it commands an end to family separation commands that families must be reunited it also blocks parents from being deported without their children which has already happened in a couple of cases it says that government agencies that are responsible this have to start communicating with each other which in some cases wasn't happening and it also says that governments have to provide the government has to provide phone calls for parents to communicate with their children wherever they are and know where their children are might was the backlash is too big to ignore because to
5:05 pm
your point i mean a lot of critics have been saying these children are being used as bargaining chips that was a big point of controversy when the family separation was still happening there are a lot of people saying he's using this to make us build his wall of that infamous border wall that trump wants along the us mexico border. at this point the trouble ministration is claiming that they've reunited five hundred or so children with their families of that hasn't been verified we have to remember that there are around two thousand up to twenty three hundred children who are separated from their families at the borders with no plan for family reunification and at this point trump seems to have for now sort of given up the card so to speak on using them to build his wall or other in. gratian compromises that he wants to to make happen but the government first of all did not have a plan in place not only for family reunification but there have been a lot of reports of family services just being overwhelmed with the amount of children who've been sent these children and of course president trump i mean this
5:06 pm
is maybe a setback but he just scored a major milestone supreme court upholding his a travel ban which some critics are calling outright an anti muslim move is this going to embolden the president this is certainly a win for him. this is some of his biggest successes he can even look at what happened at the border and point to it and say look it was working because he likes to claim that things were working even if it was causing major distress and these their actions very much explicitly said he was going to take during the campaign at the beginning of it is a mystery and if you're a trump supporter you're looking at this saying the man is keeping his promises for better or for worse he's keeping his promises and he's trying to put things in place even if the system is working against him all right maya schrader thank you for providing us with analysis and insight greatly appreciate it and next up we're going to head to our other lead story syria where government troops are expanding a major offensive against rebels in the southwest of that country the regime is

serving of eugene's and every third person to me that is by pledging to be a palestinian cause that's because of the insurance shared history now there is a huge bill that we'll all how the people are under the economic pressures now the perception within jordan is that all of these civilians are taking their jobs they're using the civic facilities so there is a lot of pressure short on the government to not accept any more cylinder effigies that is the reason for the government of naught any more refugees coming in because their housing already so many are in jordan itself where are these fifty thousand people likely to go now where can they go. well at the moment they are going deeper into the rebel held territory where they're hoping for at least some of them and that there is some sort of a compromise between the rebels and the regime that's are that is known and as we've seen in the past aleppo in daraa where if a compromise has arrived the government is open to some corner of yours and let
