mind. you. this is d w news live from berlin the unthinkable has happened to the shock of germany fans there ringing for dawn chance team germany crashed out of the twenty eight team tournament at the end of the group stage it's germany's worst of the world cup of foreman's ever and germany supporters along the bruins fan mollen around the country are devastated to the final minutes they expect at their heroes would come up with the goals needed to advance to the next thing but to no avail.
7:01 pm
layla her rock a very warm welcome everyone well we start straight with the world cup where the unthinkable has happened germany have just been eliminated and it's hard to overstate how devastating this outcome is for this football crazy country i'll be doing a post-mortem with emily how shorts and the pablo foley ileus from our sports desk is for the first time ever team germany go out of the tournament in the group stage against south korea arguably the weakest team in germany's group f. a nervous german side created the occasional goal scoring opportunity but failed to capitalize again and again while then south korea scored twice in the dying minutes of the game the first against an inept defense through a young blonde kim much to the delight of. his incredible us team mates and then on
7:02 pm
the counter human side added some more misery for the germans to mill for south korea means that title holders germany finish last in their. sweden on the other encounter in group after guess mexico and sweden and mexico are there for through to the next round all germany are out and as fans try to wrap their heads around what just unfolded in russia let's get a feel on how they're dealing with this outcome and for reactions to that match want to bring in jonathan harding he is in front of the cousin stadium where the drought drama on full that for germany jonathan what just happened. but it's hard to digest what has just happened it was a historic day for german football and perhaps not in the best way really that you can consider germany were not very good they were very good today they were very
7:03 pm
good in any of their group a group stage games in this tournament and i think that's been the biggest problem they weren't good enough to make it out of the groups and leaves a lot of questions to be asked what is your home nerve going to do now what was wrong with this squad did he pick the right players the way they played today just suggests absolutely no it wasn't a team performance and i think that's the biggest problem for germany and that's where i think all the questions will be asked why did germany not play as a team as we expect been expected into this tournament so do you think that the pressure was just too much to handle for team germany. i think there are a lot of factors that come into play here about why germany one successful in russia pressure was certainly one unlike four years ago where they went into the tournament hoping to win the title and that's exactly what they did coming into this one they were hoping to defend it that's a different approach mentally there's a lot of pressure on the team. as
7:04 pm
a result there were also a lot of issues in and around the team the measures or going to one incident that one of hope there was suggestions that the team wasn't necessarily unified and then the way that they played on the pitch wasn't very positive that they weren't very good going forward they were shaky at the back i think all of those things added together made every single game in every single day russia just a complete nightmare for this german team and that's probably why pressure became an issue. jonathan when was the last time germany went out this early. was historic to me i'm never going to go in the group stages i woke up this is a number leave a ball day for german football nobody expected this to happen and after the defeat of going out bottom of the group it's absolutely remarkable my son was told that if after the game today that he thinks the last time the germany played a good game a convincing game was in the fall of twenty seventeen and i think that tells you everything about where this germany team is they haven't played well at this tournament and this team knows it which to me suggests that they have to ask
7:05 pm
themselves why if they were aware of that then why didn't they change it and why didn't they play better a day that no german family forget and perhaps not for the best reasons ok well the probably one of the most decisive people in team germany of the their coach he made several changes to the team in hindsight was that a mistake. but it certainly looks that way the way that he's made some choices in the world cup so far hasn't exactly worked out for him i haven't been very convinced i don't think a lot of people have been convinced me five changes coming into the south korea game if he doesn't normally make those changes or certainly not that number of changes so it was a bit of a surprise and it doesn't seem to have worked now that's not to suggest that the quality of players wasn't good enough that's not what we're talking about here the players were definitely good enough but the way that they were set up and the way they played that was the problem and i think a lot of that blame definitely rests on your form of shoulders and behind you i see some cheering at south presumably south korean fans because i see the south korea
7:06 pm
flag there what was the atmosphere like in the stadium. for inside the stadium germany fans are very nervous it was almost exactly the way that their team played they were a bit anxious that belief that they had earlier in the morning completely disappeared suddenly they were fearful of what might happen and what actually has happened is this historic defeat us to south korea for us. they were absolutely over the moon as you can see and as you can hear having a party tonight i'm sure that night because i will go on a lot longer than the germany france will and before i let you go jonathan what next for germany. what next well they'll be huge conversations they'll be headlines they'll be analysis they'll be so much to say about this performance and you're going to have said it wouldn't be a dark day for german football but there will be a whole lot of conversations that will go on after this and whether he stays on as coach who stays on his players all questions that will have to be asked or answered in the future are i to jonathan harding reporting
7:07 pm
a two fer my cousin stadium where static south korean fans are cheering behind him and some sad german fans here and there were going to be back to the studio with me are emily and pablo because i'm going to try and do a post-mortem here and i want to start with you let's talk about what went wrong during this campaign so much i mean that's the bottom line so much went wrong and they got off on a really bad foot their first game was already really bad their game against mexico showed it showed all of the flaws that had just continued to continue to be in the german team it showed the flaws that they'd already presented and shown during the games before the world cup and there was never any real improvement to be seen pablo already things were looking up when they played against sweden i mean i think a decade washing that gave didn't but they delivered they did put in the very very last minute and that was the problem of course we're talking about that game
7:08 pm
against sweden that no germany found will ever forget to say the least because of course the goal came in literally in the dying seconds of the game but let's not forget that you know it started off in a very on a by a very bad foot because tony krause actually misplaced his ball which was directed this way to strike or ola toivonen who actually ended up making a mistake and actually put sweden ahead so at that point at half time germany were essentially i would. of the world cup at that point but you know after the after the break things sort of looked open didn't take too long marco royce came back to sort of semi save the day and then of course let's not forget that absolute cracker of a goal from coming across the same man who's made the same as the mistake earlier which actually helps sweden again in front so i mean we're already seeing issues in that game despite the fact that they salvaged it because that's what they did they salvaged it and they managed to kind of hold on for just a little bit longer. but the problems were still there and the team was a little bit like what emily said i'm into problems where they're from the
7:09 pm
beginning and their problems are they're probably well before they even arrived in russia and they just weren't convincing off right before we continue talking about the previous matches and i want to ask you to talk to us about that first korean goal. i mean. germany it was just it was just symptomatic for germany's performance at this world cup they weren't they weren't defending well they were leaving too many spaces open and their their back line had no help from the midfield we saw this throughout the game actually and we saw this in the games against sweden and against mexico already that the midfielders just weren't coming back to defend properly and they were joking back you couldn't see kind of their fear in their eyes about korea scoring everyone was so focused on scoring goals scored a goal scoring goals and miss really here he said this after the last game he didn't get the support he needed in the back. now you know there's been a lot of discussion and debate leading up and during this very short lived participation of team germany about how different this team is for of course the
7:10 pm
champs team twenty fourteen is that fair criticism or are they being really harsh on them i think it's fair criticism to say i mean this team crashed out in the group phase already some of it is the mentality for sure i think they were hungrier to win the title in two thousand and fourteen now they came into this tournament looking a little bit complacent actually they didn't feel like they wanted it as much as they did in two thousand and fourteen and there were some structural problems that you were human moved didn't address properly because like i said already earlier he had criticised throughout the tournament already that there weren't enough people backing him up in defense that there wasn't enough unity in the team and he was criticising that and we were waiting for the wakeup call we thought ok maybe the game against mexico was a wake up call maybe the game against sweden was a wake up call but it never ended up happening so let's have a look at their journey. i the champions have failed to defend their title germany fell at the first hurdle after three displays that belied their potential from the start of their first group match against mexico lives team was overwhelmed
7:11 pm
by the occasion the mexicans ruthlessly exploited no weaknesses in their opponents with the german players unable to respond i moved is this our courage our self-confidence and our faith in ourselves. it was all gone and why it happened i can't say but. and the problems persisted. experienced players like tony cause in midfield and thomas miller up front could not get a grip on the games germany were wasteful in possession helpless against breaks and uninspired in attack. of course there are situations where you have to move the ball up the field quickly before your opponents can get into position on the other hand if you're too impatient and lose the ball they can usually backfire those can perform against sweden also left plenty to be desired even if a touch of genius from tony calls was enough to save the day the established
7:12 pm
players seemed complacent and the newcomers like to bite a crisis meeting after the mexico match had brought no results even if the players publicly argued otherwise. in the months i really think we are a team and that we are a unit. i think that we all share the same goal i don't think that there are three players thinking one thing and three another and we all want to defend our world title. of course when we lose it's easy if you're looking from the outside to see certain things if you want to kind of in one for the. germany's hopes of back to back world cup wins dashed instead they become just the latest reigning champion to suffer the curse of an early exit from the biggest stage in football. pablo this tournaments has been played under a cloud of what's going on with the team well emily's kind of touched on a few the issues i mean there was sort of a lot of controversy saying that there was perhaps a rift in the team we're talking about sort of very experienced players in the
7:13 pm
squad along with very young players and they weren't really jelling together i mean after their defeat of course to mexico they actually disappeared for a few days didn't they i mean then you know of course that being in the media we know that but then subsequently creates more sort of interest in what's going on what was was there a rift what was happening and also there were a lot of changes made in the way the structure of germany's squad are made up and that was made actually sort of eighteen years ago really was back in two thousand so we're now beginning to see sort of a different generation of footballers comin to the germany squad and that certainly is something that they're going to have to look at now let's not forget that i'm spanish and i know exactly the feeling that germans are having right now because back in two thousand and fourteen spain the champions then were kicked out this is not something that is uncommon we see this time and time again we've seen italy as well they were kicked out they all sent out their own even here in this tournament so we're told that big teams who you could even say that perhaps they came into the
7:14 pm
tournament feeling maybe a little bit overconfident which was certainly the case for spain back in twenty fourteen and you could even argue that that was the case now with germany so i think that what's going to happen is after everybody licks their wounds now for a few days. many questions are going to have to be asked what went wrong perhaps you know bigger changes need to be gen made within the squad and am of course the man leading the team is of course a coach live for now the german f.a. are squarely standing by him they are supporting him and not dropping him yeah although there have been some reports after the game that he ruled out he didn't rule out that he would not step down so you know things are always open he extended his contract like you said before the world cup but he might also just leave it and make and it's also a chance for new coaches step in and start something new like publish said earlier there was some revamping done in the german football federation already after the euros in two thousand and it worked quite well because it took a couple of years but in two thousand and six and really in two thousand and ten i
7:15 pm
mean that generation of football is they were just so great to watch i think everybody had fun watching germany in the tournament in two thousand and ten and of course in two thousand and fourteen as well so this might be the chance for germany again takes the initiative to start something new and i'm not a big fan of coaches sticking in their seats too long anyways i think it's always nice to get in some fresh ideas give different players a chance young players who are left out look and at least the manchester city star who's been so great in the premier league this season and he was left at home he wasn't in your lives world cup squad so things like that might change in the future what i'm hearing you say. is over you could argue that i would argue that i would say i think it's a good time for him to kind of step down and give someone else a chance and give the team a chance to find some new ideas and find some new ways to solve it.
