this is d. w. news from live from girl and it is about everything from the angle america's words on migration in a speech to parliament ahead of crunch talks in brussels the german chancellor says that the issue of migration will decide the destiny of the european union also at stake her own destiny as germany's leader. also coming up shock and soul
10:01 am
searching as true in germany as the national team crashed out of the world cup in the group stage how did it all go so wrong for the reigning champions who will have analysis from our football expert. i'm sara kelly walked into the program german chancellor angela merkel has been addressing the german parliament on the controversial topic of migration she called it one of the biggest challenges facing the e.u. and she urged the block to take a multilateral approach to overcome division on the issue her comments came ahead of a key summit in brussels later today. but if you know how old. europe is facing many challenges. but migration could become a make or break question for the new and you know given either we tackle it in
10:02 am
such a way that people in africa and elsewhere believe we are guided by our values and we insist on multilateralism or no nobody will believe in the value system that made it so strong on the market and this is because you've. got to get more now on this speech and what is at stake here are political correspondent hans branches joining us here in the studio and we also have our chief political editor mahela cook who has been monitoring merkel speech directly there at the board the german parliament and mikhail i'd like to turn to you because i think it's fair to say this was a relatively passionate speech for america what are we to make of it. yes absolutely and quite clearly from that sound bite we heard she believes this is about a lot more than the political point scoring that we've seen here from those in the party rebels the c.s.u. yes the german chancellor is clearly under threat from within her own political camp varian party that wanted to see
10:03 am
a much tighter closed border essentially from the day one of the twenty fifteen quizes and she saw herself having to defend once again here in the bonus talk something she herself perceives germany should pretty much be getting over by now but the issue of migration policy back then and now which is become a lot tighter and this gets lost in this conversation under criticism that she's facing that there's been a whole host of restrictions implemented a departure from what became known of this open arms policy that her name stands for now she's criticizing that everything seems to focus on this key issue of migration but there are other key issues also on the table of how to secure the eurozone also the implications of that and really there's a lot of political psychology going on something she really isn't in for in this political game and we saw her really struggling we even saw her annoyed at
10:04 am
a certain point from shouts from the far right if do you party here so it's very unusual indeed to see the german chancellor that emotional in the debates and appealing that this is about the big concept of the european union nothing less you have the european union all working together they're very much emphasizing that germany cannot go it alone she emphasizes trilateral bilateral deals that is ultimately her goal and she has laid out hands branch but on the at the same time she was managing expectations in this speech so what do you think that says about what is realistic coming out of brussels after today well. she did say very clearly that she doesn't expect a european solution at this stage on the migration question she was saying that a complete agreement as it were is not likely to be reached at the summit even though talking about that has gone on for for quite
10:05 am
a long time for years in fact. that does not mean that it's impossible that she might find some sort of deal with one or two separate countries these kinds of coalitions of the willing that she's talking about of countries that might agree amongst each other on some sort of distribution of refugees and that might include even that certain refugees that have applied for asylum will have been registered in these countries that germany much find agreement with could be sent back to the countries so that would in some sense. be and also to the demands that come from within her coalition but at the moment she's not promising anything as she's in fact gone playing expectations for the next couple of days and that leaves a very open what might happen when she gets back from brussels and the various committees in the various parties are going to discuss this during the week and to decide whether or not this is going to be enough let's talk about for a moment about what might happen after she gets back from brussels and i'll turn to you make a lead because you know we did not see it chancellor backing down in that speech
10:06 am
not at all but we know the c.s.u. has this end of month deadline for getting a deal so what is their next move and does merkel have been backed into a corner here. no she definitely doesn't but what has happened is that a poll came out this week that really so that the c.s.u. failed to score political points by openly confronting the german chancellor lot of also their voters voted for the c.d.u. c.s.u. because of anglo-american and not despite her although there is a broad majority here that don't like this open approach to migration and that's really the contradiction that we're in right now it's far moved past the point of being in actual fact or discussing all sides even the critics know that america will not come home with the overall deal that the e.u. has so failed to come up with i mean the eastern states didn't even turn up to that special migration summits there was no surprise in that either the question now is
10:07 am
how this use you if it wants to can back out of this corner that it's maneuvered itself into and we've already heard much much more. rhetoric coming from the seas you lead a horse the wolf are basically saying you will see will find a way out of this at the same time signaling that on the very issue of turning away people at the border they don't really want to back down at the same time they know that on the very principle the foundations of people's right to seek asylum here in germany the chance of a move and that will be the interesting thing really on sunday evening first of all whether the c.d.c.'s you will risk its own political how can i say failure by really sparking that down right confrontation and i very much doubt that it will come to that but what the c.s.u. will insist on fashion i think we will see more people turned away at the border that is something they need to really deliver to their voters now and interestingly
10:08 am
enough the interior minister or horse disaster himself was actually not at the speech today are also something worth noting and i'd just like to ask you who do you see as having the upper hand in this domestic dispute here how do you. see it playing out over the next days it's a very high stakes game and i think the variance have to some extent reaction to those up one notch to fall they've gone a little bit too far in their demands and i think the idea that the interior minister might do this on his own which is something that has saved the interior minister. that is the point where he has trans transgressed a kind of. ridge line that merkel cannot accept so if he were to decide to do things on his own she would have to throw him out if we get to that point then you know everything is finished but we're not at that point yet and as has been saying there have been some more conciliatory three statements from the side in the last
10:09 am
twenty four hours or so so possibly there is still some way of finding some sort of way out of those in the next couple of days and first things first on her way to brussels later today we will see what she is able to get from her european partners and if that will be enough to satisfy the domestic parties behala because they're joining us with the latest from the bundestag and hans branch here in our studio thank you so much to both of you. now we're going to head to the world cup and a match that will be etched into germany's football memory for years to come i that is the moment you're watching it right there when south korean flans fans excuse me realized that their team had beaten the germans by two goals to nail and knocked the world champs out of the tournament the result guaranteed mexico would follow sweden into the knockout phase
10:10 am
and mexican fans were quick to show their gratitude to see them there they are celebrating at the south korean embassy in mexico city. germany fans though a lot of tears distraught stunned not only did their team fail to make it through to the last sixteen they came out bottom of group after but many said that they in fact deserved to lose. well it's the day after that loss but there is plenty to talk about before we get into the post-mortem let's see how germany date with destiny unfolded i midway through the first half a became evidently clear it was not to be germany's afternoon even captain manuel neuer looks nervous at the start of the second half the german side managed to mount some pressure on the south korean go but failed to capitalize on their own chances time and time again nervous at the back and nervous in front of the opponents goal i. in the dying minutes of the game
10:11 am
germany's afternoon go even worse one came took advantage of some inept defending to give south korea the lead by much to the disbelief of his own teammates five times in the six minutes of stoppage time domain so i moved to germany's misery i. knew exactly when to start going. the sixty fifth minute we started to get really hectic we lost a low tech to could set up we became while you take a little misplaced passes did run into something pretty good counter attacks which i hope i can say we stood for and are good but some home we lost all structure this is a very bitter moment for us and all of germany france very very very big to even ing it up. the title holders humiliated crashed out of the world cup but the first hurdle. so joining me now to rake over the coals of that painful defeat is tom
10:12 am
genoa from sports he's here in the studio for us and jonathan harding is standing by at the germany team camp outside of moscow welcome to you both and jonathan i'd like to turn to you first because you traveled back from cazan with the german team last night and i imagine the mood there is not the best. i don't know it's the best word support it yes not the best ironic because well considering that seems a lot of think most best never rest but there's nothing best about this team the moment the mood last night after the game was well dejection disappointment under the same here this morning the sun might be shining the hotel right behind me to the players i just saw i was so disappointed but rather me talk about it here's what you. think would happen if we'd spoken about soft plan often enough and knew how tough it would be but we couldn't implement it said by me i am deeply
10:13 am
disappointed i was so it's a mistake but now we need time to process and then we'll see where we go from here my fish but if you want to be smug and the nation is deeply disappointed also processing this shocking loss we have to say tom and they're doing so i understand you're looking at the papers not to be set here processing the loss is about right and in fact it seems the papers are having rather a tough time coming to terms with the catastrophe of yesterday see the sights all of them with this rather. troubling picture i would say of mario gomez and nuts who is looking like they're having a tough time believing what just happened the historic exit in the kick with the role of football and of course last looking world cup trophy for the jewel in the. build have gone with the headline speechless which. is in fact as quite so conscious repetition of the headline with which they went off to germany beat brazil seven one in the two thousand and fourteen world cup semi final so an illustration there of just how far germany have fallen and fulfilled with this was
10:14 am
a rather fluent and distraught looking your effects in the. match report in the football build they haven't given a single player rating as they usually do to any of the german players because in their own justification no rating can describe this surely ation. it really makes a depressing read or have they might invent a negative rating in fact. you know jonathan you were actually at that match and if you can just you know go back in time a little bit what was it like to watch this. well it was a very strange feeling but it was the feeling that everybody has had while watching this germany theme throughout this one and they've been about it every single day and i think that was the case in because i mean yesterday germany france remained confident before the game there was a sense of always germany you know we'll get it done and i think the problem was that the players had the same feeling and that was evident from the way that they played it was
10:15 am
a massive problem and the atmosphere generated in the stadium they were hopeful they were hesitant and being you know watching it on how watching unfold was just remarkable it was fun just something you can't really describe really to pitches to really justify the experience there is just something that germany will have to get over it it's such a huge painful disappointment for this to. pass the first comes the pain then comes the autopsy we have to figure out what happened a lot of people already talking about that don right yeah it seems that one of the main kind of feelings about what happened what went wrong for this germany team is that they arrived at the world cup feeling quite complacent they were they were i mean they were calling themselves the favorites they had performed so brilliantly with basically a b. team at last year's confederations cup but you know you actually made a couple of selection cools that were perhaps quite a few people hard to justify left leave or sauna out lee or so on it was the young player of the year this year in the english premier league and germany at the
10:16 am
tournament looked like they were having quite a bit of trouble couldn't really find much creativity going forward some of the old players who were left in got a lot of playing time and didn't really look to be that inspired some of the younger players who perhaps might have been able to bring some new energy into the team really didn't have that much faith placed into them so. it's going to be a while before the dust settles and some tricky questions for you and and you know everyone wants to ask who's to blame here really because you know over the past decade we have to mention jonathan i'd like to ask you about this germany has basically been steadily improving and then becoming the world champs now very much at a new low point does yogi loved need to handle his resignation. well that's the question everybody's asking themselves so i think it's a little bit difficult to answer that fully one day off of the emotional events in cazan everybody will be looking towards you're going to have to make a decision he was obviously hesitant to give a final answer a definitive answer in the aftermath of the game bigger questions for me what
10:17 am
happens with this court and there are some members of this team some acadia or maybe thomas miller matson was thrown both in my more noir what do they do do they carry on are they still going to be a part of the team or the european championships in two years i think your home of having extended his contract before the tournament will probably stay on but it is a long time before germany's next game of the men next friendlies in october or something like that so germany do have time to make a decision jonathan harding at the germany team camp outside of moscow where as we mentioned a lot of soul searching at this hour and. joining us from sports getting the reaction from germany and putting it all into perspective for us we thank you so much to both of you. nine months to go until briggs it and there's still a lot of confusion about what that will mean for businesses no makers continue to engage in a heated debate about the u.k.'s future outside of the european union british companies have warned a prime minister to rescind may that
10:18 am
a messy exit could put thousands of jobs at risk industry representatives here in germany have also been voicing concerns and calling for both european and british lawmakers to outline their plans. so to talk more about how german business is preparing for briggs it i'm joined in the studio now by power mesa from the federation all the german industries good to see you thanks for having me nine months to go in theory to bragg's it all gemma business is worried what are they telling you and all of a getting out of britain very very concerned because we don't know what's going to happen after after the exit date it's march twenty ninth you said it's not it's nine months to go and talk to companies here that they're doing plans to prepare for what's what's considered the worst case that we crush out without any deal at all what are those plans they set a new facilities they see whether they have other suppliers that are operate within
10:19 am
the single market they hire people in order to process customs they think about whether the free flow of data is still possible with the u.k. and the e.u. they set up servers so it's a broad range and it's very individual based from companies a company can say but it's you know potentially a boon for germany we've seen lots of jobs from the city of london already moved back to francs so you know isn't that the other side to this debate there is clearly a trend towards that but i wouldn't say that's a positive development because firms are based in the united kingdom for a reason they think it's the best place for at least that part of the bill. shade to do business and you end up with a twofold negative consequence first of all you have you have a moving costs and a risk that's associated with it and on the other hand you end up in a place that is less optimal than the status quo so they currently think with the current status that is the best place to do business in what while could you
10:20 am
imagine the european union still doing business with britain without a deal is that even feasible it certainly is feasible but if it comes with a huge to trim mental effect the single market is way more than what's considered a regular free trade agreement as we have it with a lot of external countries. and that's why why we also say as a business community we want to have the closest. the closest ties with the u.k. that a possible but we have to move within a sort framework we have to make sure that we don't jeopardize our relationship with our fellow e.u. twenty seven members we have to make sure that we don't jeopardize our relationship with with third countries. and in this framework we have to we have to end up in a solution that's probably more conventional than the government in london hopes all right well your body has called the clarity from britain and from brussels we will see what comes up from that upcoming summit from the federation all german

industries thank you and enough thanks. our financial correspondent daniel course in frankfurt stock exchange we can check in with haven now daniel we've had chancellor merkel addressing the german parliament earlier according to the monetary reform is that something that's going down well there in the country's financial health. world to be quite honest not really everybody on the trading floor is certain that certain reforms in the european union are necessary but what makes investors warry are countries who have been struggling lately we just have to remember italy during the campaign they even called for a billion worth of debt relief there by the european central bank and also the possible bailout fund remember that friends president a man on my call is very much in favor of something like that with the budget to help other countries out if needed all of this would not be appreciated here in the business world but let me tell you i've seen many here on the trading floor

watching what is happening at the german parliament at the moment because many fear that not just the future of german code you are him lose will be decided in the next days but also that the future of chancellor angela merkel could be decided as well all right so what's getting the investors down there is it football or politics because we've seen behind the dax was down when traders woke up but they believe the over the world cup exit. well let me tell you yesterday here on the trading floor you might have seen during some of our live shots the trading floor was decorated we have seen german flags here i was looking around i don't see a single german flag here anymore also yesterday we were invited at a reception off the daughter bertha to watch the game after that it was really quiet and the roots of and there was also doesn't really know what to do today we started in the red then and went up again volatility is still a very big topic the possible trade war is still the main concern here among
