this is d.w. news live from but in the deal revealed chancellor angela merkel secures new agreements across europe to curb migrant flows into germany but is restricted e.u. asylum policy and not to let these rebels in her government can save her job or so coming up. i'm helena humphrey glad you could join me well eight spain
6:01 pm
a make or break week for german chancellor angela merkel and now she appears to have delivered a deal that could salvage her fractured coalition machall has secured agreements with fourteen more a you countries for the rapid return of rejected asylum seekers she's also called for migrant processing centers at germany's forward it details in a letter sent to coalition leaders merkel had faced a sunday deadline from a rebel faction in her government to overhaul the e.u.'s migration approach she told reporters in brussels the deal could be enough to end this standoff with a state premier of bavaria praised the e.u. agreement saying it was more that his conservative party expected marcus zero to caution that some of the measures were vague and more would have to be done. this is what was agreed in brussels was a lot more than expected and it's definitely a step in the right direction a lot of the measures that have been agreed are things that alba varian c.s.u.
6:02 pm
policy was demanding i think the summit wouldn't have achieved as much as it did had very and not pushed so hard so bavaria achieved a lot on that side and joining me in the studio now is our chief political correspondent melinda crane melinda judging by what we just heard there from marcus is that it seems that he satisfied can we now say that that conflict between the c.d.u. in the c.s.u. is resolved it's done and dusted no we certainly can't say that yet we will know more tomorrow that is when the leadership of both parties both the chancellors christian democrats and this bavarian sister party the c.s.u. both of their leaderships will meet separately tomorrow to discuss this deal both a deal that was arrived at by the e.u. summit and also these separate bilateral deals that the chancellor arrived out with fourteen different member states and after that we will know more about whether the c.s. use leader is ready to walk back his ultimatum to the chancellor basically he has
6:03 pm
been saying all along that starting monday he was prepared to use his powers and his interior minister to send migrants who were already registered in border countries of the e.u. italy greece spain back to those countries rather than let them into germany now whether he will back off from that or not we don't know yet we have heard the party leadership despite more conciliatory statements like that saying they believe that the e.u. summit agreement still leaves room for what they call national measures meaning unilateral measures that is not the chancellor's interpretation so there is definitely still room for conflict here so we're proceeding with caution we are waiting to see some more oh how high is the risk then that the government could still collapse. i guess but really it's speculation is that they will find a face saving way to back down from the brinkmanship tomorrow and i think that's one of the reasons we're hearing those conciliatory statements like the ones in
6:04 pm
that in that short sound bite if you listen to what they're saying they're saying basically this was all are doing that finally we've got this movement at e.u. level and clearly that's a way to pave or they're paving the way for being able to say this agreement is ok important to remember this is all about the varian elections this coming fall the c.s.u. is very eager to ward off gains by the far right a.f.d. what they've seen in recent polls is that the bavarian voters don't necessarily like the course they've been taking two thirds of the bavarian voters actually say they prefer the chancellor's approach so that's another reason i think they may have an interest in backing i mean that's a very important point let's zoom out for a minute because this is not just a story of politico survival what will this mean for the people fleeing war fighting violence it means basically that europe has got a step closer to becoming fortress europe if we look at the different aspects of
6:05 pm
the deal that was reached at the e.u. summit what it means for migrants let's say leaving africa is that if they try to come to europe by sea they may be picked up and brought back to so-called disembarkation centers in northern africa that supposedly will be run in accordance with international law but we can't be sure of that if they actually make it to europe they could be held in closed control centers on some of those peripheral in some of those peripheral countries there too we don't know about the conditions in those centers what we're looking at is a much tighter europe will that stop refugees from coming probably not many of the people coming are fleeing for their lives whether they will be deterred by this new deal very much for me it's to be seen chief political correspondent melinda crane appreciate your analysis thank you. a weeks of infighting over migration of exposed deep rifts in merkel's government and germany's far right opposition now wants to
6:06 pm
capitalize on the division the party carney has around fifteen percent backing in public opinion polls a slight improvement on last year's election result but still far behind the conservatives now as he opened the party conference this weekend on xander gollan the leader of the i ten a t.v. for. the germany party said merkel has left the country isolated on the international stage. is the answer. right now germany's enemies with russia are again because of putin's and with the americans because of trump it's enemies with britain because of bric said our relationship with poland hungary italy and even austria terrible ladies and gentleman think back to the last german leader who made that many enemies. in heaven what you know i don't want to make that comparison
6:07 pm
the leader of the far right party that alexander garland now protests of being held today in cities across the u.s. against president on a policy of separating migrant families the rallies come despite chunks decision to end the practice thousands of children remain split from their parents in custody immigration noirs warn that reuniting them will be a long and difficult process protesters are aiming to make the issue a key factor in midterm elections later this year. so let's go live to washington d. w's may have can a guy who is a protest that joins us now. what's the time now like there and what are people telling you. ah. ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah ah well it turns out is
6:08 pm
really massive maybe you can hear the people chanting the vote them out here in the background this is really the striking thing about this prison protest this really was was organized less than two weeks ago and you organizers expected maybe a couple of thousand people to turn out and it seems like there may be tens of thousands of people who have come here which is astounding because this is of course also the holiday week before the fourth of july independence day here in the u.s. and it's summer and so to get a large crowd as this truth to come here and to to protest president trumps immigration policy is of course a big feet with with less than two weeks time people or people are really basically demanding that the most recent changes its immigration policy and stop separating families. from from each other and they basically also there have been calls to to abolish the ice agency which is responsible for for the separate to carry out the separations and detentions and the people are basically basically demanded also to
6:09 pm
basically come out in the pitch of elections and vote for for democrats to make it harder for the trumpeters with them it's for the trouble to stretch to carry out its policies isn't it a bit of a delay we should just tell all of us but it's great to have you that that protest ayn washington you just mentioned that government agency i see the agency that's been separating families tell us more about them. well the ice agency is part of the homeland security department but it's responsible to carry out the immigration policy of the service of this administration and the ice agents are the ones who who are right who are in charge of of separating these families or have been in charge of separating these families and they're also in charge of detainees there basically the law enforcement aspect of the department of homeland security and people here really took issue with that
6:10 pm
they say that that i should be abolished there was also sites here melts ice to basically melt the ice organization and this this this abolish they are the whole the whole thing and so this is one of the focal points of this more of this marches is is to perhaps get rid of this i say that if it's possible for carrying out these groups these policies are id. the washington rally the families belong together rally thank you and now some of the other stories making news around the world the u.s. is examining options for with during its forces stationed in germany the us according to the washington post president has reportedly expressed interest in the move amid tensions with chancellor angela merkel now according to the report all thirty five thousand u.s. troops could be transferred to the u.s. or potent german industrial giant it to some cope and india's tatarstan have
6:11 pm

6:13 pm
one more bite coonawarra came on as a substitute but it was too little too late for three in the france and they go through you mention that resurrection national front how impressive were they to your mind incredibly impressive to say the least in fact i would go as far as saying it's france or one of the teams who have a very big chance of actually going to whole way and actually winning this tournament which will be enough to be spectacular. you know fee for france of course i can see you smiling many times fun but of course you know with players like unto agrees mike can be he's only nineteen this guy is with p.s.g. and i think people will be remembering that name after this tournament because he's just absolutely stunning out there and of course people like ruffles around. him and of course let's not forget in charge you've got to be additional well spoiled ready what i say let's just talk about argentina that i mean is this the end of the great messi a little age you know messi looked incredibly dejected you know he's along with the team itself there's been major issues there he's thirty one so let's not forget
