10:00 pm
mark. let me look at the. this is the w. news live from berlin the deal is revealed chancer on the americal secures new agreements across europe to curb migrant flows into germany but is the stricter e.q. asylum policy enough to appease rebels in her government and save her job. also coming up with the first knockout round under way the twenty eighteen world cup in russia or why i took on portugal in the second of the days last sixteen matches she goals from everything from bonnie worry not to see all christiana rinaldo sign and work
10:01 pm
right into the quarter finals bring you the goal. welcome to the program i marry in evanston it's been a make or break week for german chancellor on the america all and now she appears to have delivered a deal that could avoid the breakup of her coalition a letter to her coalition partners reveals that he should she has secured agreements with a further fourteen countries for the return of asylum seekers she's also called for migrant processing centers at germany's borders the various state premier has welcomed the deals and his c.s.u. party is meeting on sunday to decide whether to accept the concessions americal secured in brussels. a minor parties regional convention usually arouses little international attention but times are different since the dispute over migration
10:02 pm
policy threatened to divide the c.d.u. from the bavarian sister party the c.s.u. the bavarian state premier gave an indication of how his party might respond to the compromise reached by e.u. leaders in brussels and if they go should india have to go it's a step in the right direction some things remain very unclear and have to be expanded our european partners have explicitly agreed that there must also be supporting national measures that means it's been decided that now we in germany must also take action. but the center left social democrats insists there are some measures they would certainly not accept most of these i would like to make it clear once again that union lateral actions and the rejection of refugees at the border are off the table in a lesser merkel informs her coalition partners about the results of the e.u. summit it said the chancellor had secured agreements with fourteen countries for the rapid return of asylum seekers already registered in those countries such
10:03 pm
a deal already exists with greece and spain but there's no deal in sight with italy one of the main transit countries and the czech republic and hungary deny any involvement in the agreement it's still unclear how quickly the situation will change for migrants seeking refuge in europe. and let's get some analysis now for that i'm joined in the studio by our chief political correspondent melinda crane melinda so from what we heard in that report some conciliatory words from one of the c.s.u. leaders that this mean the dispute between the c.s.u. and chancellor merkel is now resolved no we can't say that and we won't know for sure i think until tomorrow when the leadership of both parties will be meeting to look at what was agreed last week and decide sensually on the part of the varying conservatives whether it is enough for them to essentially back down the main sticking point here still remains this question of unilateral action as mentioned
10:04 pm
in the report so as you remember the conflict began because the head of the very conservative party who was also germany's interior minister had essentially said that he believes germany can and must go it alone to turn back refugees who were already registered in another european union member country normally the countries on the periphery of the e.u. the southern border like greece like spain like italy and send back to those countries now despite the conciliatory tone that we heard in that report we are hearing c.s.u. leaders saying that they believe that this summit agreement allows them nonetheless to still proceed unilaterally the chancellor definitely doesn't see it that way if i look at the agreement the wording of what was agreed on by the e.u. leaders i don't see it that way either and i don't see her backing down on that point all right so perhaps some vague language in the declarations or the agreement
10:05 pm
from the chancellor different people understanding it in different ways so is there still a risk that the government could collapse over there and there absolutely is a risk if in fact mr say hope for the interior minister were to move forward on his threat and say well we are going to act. adoree after all i think the chancellor really would have no choice but to fire him for insubordination that would set in motion a cascade of events that essentially could explode her coalition and lead to her term as chancellor and but my prediction and it really is mostly speculation at this point is that both sides will look for a face saving way to deescalate i think that's what this conciliatory language from the c.s.u. means we've heard them saying hey we paved the way for the movement that happened this week at the summit and why are they now deescalating well for the same reason that they started this conflict in the first place domestic politics they are
10:06 pm
looking toward a very important very unstable election in the fall worried about the gains by the right wing wanting to look tough on immigration but it turns out voters who were polled recently don't like the way they're going about it and actually two thirds support the chancellor's approach right so we say with a fake of domestic politics also the chancellor is a future perhaps but we mustn't forget this is about human beings these migrants are coming from places where there is war there's all kinds of violent conflicts what does do these new rules and migration actually mean for the people significantly higher obstacles for people who are trying to enter the european union there is no question this is the first step toward tightening europe's borders fortress europe is what many people are calling it that means if you even make it to see as a migrant you well might be sent back to a so-called disembarkation camp in northern africa it is not clear whether
10:07 pm
international law will really be enforced in these centers the e.u. leaders are claiming it will but right now the centers that do exist in northern africa have been condemned as as very very difficult places for migrants if you do make it to the shores of europe you might wind up in a so-called control center an anchor center a holding place that would be closed also a very difficult hurdle would stuff refugees from coming probably not all of them many are fleeing for their lives melinda crane our chief political correspondent many thanks indeed for all your insights. well the weeks of infighting over migration have exposed deep rifts in miracles government germany's a far right opposition rejects miracles policy outright the populous a deep party is holding its congress this weekend in the southern city of oxford party leaders say they will seek to forge a bloc of countries to create what melinda mentioned as fortress of europe that would stop migrants from entering the e.u.
10:08 pm
well earlier in the chief political editor me spoke with beatrix one story the deputy leader of the f.t. . this is fun story there's a bit of fights going on between the sea use you the party of bavaria where we are right now and i'm going to see do you party both the same political camp over the very issue of migration now what's your prognosis of what's going to happen over the weekend will there be a climb down and why has the f.t. not been able to profit in the polls from this dispute first of all i think we do profit what we expect in the end or at the end of this weekend what we've seen we do not expect too much because that would mean that the head of varia the interior minister. would have to act and we don't expect him to act and to close down our borders we don't think that he will do so we expect that he will follow the line he's been always following which means you know asking for something getting
10:09 pm
nothing and then keep on going now your own party leaders said that migration is the key issue for europe but europe has to be the solution that's what mr morrison said but that the if he wants to have different partners in europe for that issue so are you probably a bit closer to this multilateral european approach than you publicly say i think are very close to all these some countries of europe we also close and to some extent two fronts which is not accepting illegal migrants coming from italy for example so everything mrs merkel has been asking for has failed does not function no one wants to participate there is no quota or in the end that's going to be installed over all the european union this is what she was asking for the whole time this will not happen everything what european countries will do will be on a free lance basis so they can't we they stop to try to force them to take migrants
10:10 pm
in if they don't want to so that's a complete failure of the migration policy of until america mr starr thank you very much for talking to us. all right the soccer world cup continues to bring lots of thrills and today's first knockout games or certainly no exception have a fully last time to get the sports joins me now in the studio to talk about all the action so pablo right before we went to air in this program the final seconds what an amazing result for or a guy really good for europe would two one in the end they see off the european champions of course portugal and what a game it was the first time really wasn't exciting but the best thing is if we see these goals it's what we really really need to do europe was take a look there now you can see how things really work quite exciting look at these for an absolute cracker of a goal from edinson cavani he met a we swatted scrolls in just the seventh minute to give his side believe it was canceled i was in the second half of taping rose highest to drag his side level.
10:11 pm
once again that's edison cavani from p.s.g. on your wise course he was the hero of the hour but a little bit of a bittersweet there taste in the minds of your boy fans because he actually ended up limping off and he was helped off by none other christian arnold who's now going home that's right and not only is he going home but following the match between france and argentina the other superstar is also going that's right two big superstars are going back to their home countries of course christiane arnaldo with portugal and the amount messi really poor results for them also what was so game between france and argentina i think the best thing is we take a look at the seven goals when all of them but let's take a look at this refute that. a blistering run from the phenomenal killion back pay was too much for argentina to deal with marcus russell paid down and that's when griezmann converted the resulting penalty i it was pays paris and demand to make i
10:12 pm
go di maria to equalise with this outstanding strike just before half time just after the break argentina went in front thanks to a clever little touch from gabriele america just a little messy shot. but the pendulum had another swing and first up benjamin powered stroke to find hard folly all the way into the back of the net then the relate this map a schooled the games and immediately afterwards six three goals in just eleven minutes to turn the tie completely on its head substitute sergio aguero did one more home in extra time but it wasn't enough for an ambitious argentina side it's a disastrous early exit. all right really impressive stuff from france pablo just how far can they go i think france can go the whole way they've got an incredibly good team made up of big players like on time griezmann and of course the man who we were talking to looking at their kenyan and but they let's hear
10:13 pm
about at let's hear what he had to say after not because he was delighted and also going to see and swung in the shot at. the gulf coast he did it to be. pretty but i was i'm pleased i feel good people said that we hadn't done anything good up till now but we had a complicated group and now it's the great team with great players we did well but it's not got much brooke. amazing only nineteen years old and very disappointing though fairly n.l. message does this mean it's the end of him on the international stage well it looks like we've already heard from. his old another player in the argentina squad after the match and he said that he's actually that's it that's his a career over for the argentina team do you know messi thirty one years old so he'll be thirty five at the next world cup i probably won't be seeing him in four years time along with maybe one or two other players like coonawarra as well who scored in the match today sometimes for him he was hoping to bring argentina a little bit further in the competition but they just weren't there they weren't
10:14 pm
good enough and from sco through and deservedly so all right. many thanks indeed as always for all of that thanks so much. now it was supposed to travel into the vastness of space but it barely got off the ground executives from a startup in japan were puzzled when their rocket crashed in spectacular fashion shortly after take off have a look at. oh dear there goes the rocket suffered a catastrophic engine failure that sent it plummeting back down to earth. firefighters work was at hand and no one was injured and now engineers are collecting the debris to work out what precisely went wrong.
