we'll bring you the latest from there. it's good to have you with us tonight british public health authorities are warning people not to touch anything that may have been discarded by someone else it comes as british police confirm that two people poisoned by nerve agent were exposed to this substance by handling a contaminated object the incident happened near the city of salzburg it is the second time that the city has been at the center of a new poisoning in march the former russian spy. and his daughter were allegedly attacked at his home in that town along with his daughter and this is about thirteen kilometers from the house where the couple involved in this new case were fell. on britain's health ministers this poisoning looks like an unfortunate after
9:02 pm
effect of the earlier incident counterterrorism police are leading the investigation they are trying to determine exactly what happened this is the british couple at the center of a new mystery surrounding an english town charlie rose early and dawn sturgis were exposed to the nerve agent of a child they were taken ill at their home in maine spray on saturday after visiting the town of souls bree the previous day the couple are now in critical condition at salisbury district hospital it's the same clinic that treated former russian spies second script powell and his daughter yulia after they were nearly killed by the same type of nerve agent britain blamed that attack firmly on russia today the u.k. as authorities in moscow to share whatever they know with british police the eyes of the world are currently on russia not least because of the world cup. it is now
9:03 pm
time that the russian state comes forward and explains exactly what has gone on. but russia pointed the finger straight back at britain in a familiar war of words but as i am but at that meeting we call on british door and foresman bodies not to follow the dirty political games initiated by some forces in london and to start cooperating with russian law enforcement bodies in this investigation but all cranky to me. prime minister to resign may be held talks with angela merkel in berlin simply said her thoughts were with the victims to see two more people exposed to the novacek in the u.k. is obviously deeply disturbing and the police i know will be leaving no stone unturned in their investigation in relation to what has happened. police now say test samples from the two patients have revealed that they were exposed to the nerve agent after handling
9:04 pm
a contaminated item officials do not believe the pair were deliberately targeted police have cordoned off places the couple visited in the hours before they fell ill including a church community center the british government is urging members of the public who visited any of these areas recently to wash their clothes and wipe down any personal items as a precaution. well when it comes to migration policy they do not agree and it was on display today for the world to see germany's chancellor and hungary's prime minister traded accusations over migration policy at talks here in berlin i'm going to medical met with viktor orbán as part of her efforts to win support for her tougher new migration policy despite germany's new stricter proposals that would see transit centers on the border to austria chancellor merkel said that she wants to protect europe's humanity orbán wants to
9:05 pm
turn back most asylum seekers at europe's external borders and is against redistributing them within the e.u. . well before germany can enact any tougher migration policy i'm going to medical first needs to get it signed off by her social democratic coalition partners that meeting has been happening today inside the chancellor's office let's go there now our correspondent thomas sparrow is on the story for us there good evening to you tomas so the s.p.d. leader has been meeting with the german chancellor what's the latest. well apparently hadley's for all we've been able to hear there is some sort of unity in the german grand coalition regarding immigration not only regarding the proposals of the agreement that the conservative bloc had made a few days ago but also regarding proposals that the s.p.d. the third member of the grand coalition the social democrats also brought to the
9:06 pm
table they had indicated previously that they wanted also to bring their own proposals focused on or the most you money tarion approach an approach based on solidarity it is still unclear what exact details that agreement might have but again what we've been hearing from people who are inside that meeting they data now managed to get that deal and three members of the german grand coalition at the stand with this issue together and they want to move forward also on other issues as well ok the the leader of the s.p.d. andreea nawas she has been vocal in her criticism of miracles migration policy but she just spoke about this new approach and possibly this new agreement let's take a listen to what she had to say. larry i'm annoying through second we have a new proposal on the table that reflects the priorities for the social democratic party in the she was refugee policy these are not only realistic but also well through town. on this ng and so i hope that all three coalition parties can agree
9:07 pm
to these proposals today but of course i can't make a prediction on the outcome to for negotiations on concluded. that syrian in thomas this new policy on migrants he calls for asylum seekers to be held in transit centers now three years ago the s.p.d. was adamantly against this idea transit centers why does their attitude appeared to be changing. well i think it will be interesting to find out what exactly agreed on this issue because as you say brant the s.p.d. had criticized the idea of any type of transit centers are closed centers for for migrants obviously the situation is now different when you compare to the situation three years ago fewer migrants are arriving to germany there seems to be a little bit more clarity as to what these transit sandoz would be although the absolute details of how they were put to put in practice those details we still don't know so we will certainly be interesting to find out from the s.p.d.
9:08 pm
from the social democrats what exactly was agreed on why they changed their opinion compared to what they had expressed three years ago regarding these transit sentences are responded to almost bear on the story for us tonight here in berlin thomas thank you. now to the war in syria where the government and russian forces have renewed their bombardments on rebel held areas in the south of the country waves of airstrikes and shelling have pounded the city of the rod in the most intensive bombing campaign in the two week old offensive the fresh assault comes a day after russian burger talks with rebels broke down on wednesday following the bombardments arrest syrian rebel negotiators and russian military commanders have reportedly resume negotiations on a final deal to end the fighting in the province and hand control back to the government of the area in question here in southern syria are some of the last rebel held areas in the country let's have a look at this map and we can see the rebels here are marked in green and
9:09 pm
how they have been pushed back from the city of durai the government now controls the areas in red their goal is to drive the rebels from the strategic border areas with jordan and the israeli controlled go one heights the black area is still controlled by so-called islamic state opposition activists say scores of civilians have been killed in the offensive and the u.n. estimates that more than three hundred thirty thousand people have fled the fighting all right let's talk a little bit more about what's going on in syria to do that i'm joined by the journalist in the middle east expert daniel gary locke it's good to have you back on the show in danger you know i'm here to say that a lot of people watching thought that the fighting in syria that this conflict had been if not resolved at least the fighting had stopped that is not the case are we looking at a new new humanitarian crisis yes and i think the unitary in crisis is of a stock that's been going on. probably
9:10 pm
a bit less news about its writing going on in this thought and the war has also been going on and this thought actually this is one of the very few areas in syria as you as you just said where the war has started like in the very beginning of the war that's where it started and it went on have a sense so this military operation. there's no endgame for the war in syria but it's just like another bit that the syrian regime and its allies are trying to conquer and instead of of course it touches very sensitive ground the israeli border the jordanian border the humanitarian situation there but also the united states are involved in this was a part of syria whether the u.s. and russia agreed circumstantially on a deescalation in which of course the syrian regime and the russians time to finish the war elsewhere before they would for use in here the united nations has urged jordan to open its borders and to take in more refugees but jordan has already said it can't handle anymore where these people are going to go. well eventually i
9:11 pm
think some of them are going to go to jordan but i think also we will see a lot of internally displaced people and maybe one of the results of these negotiations with the russians and the syrian regime might be if they take them in i don't want to talk about the conditions under which they are going to be taken in internally displaced and also want to highlight the fact that there are certain areas around and in the south refugee camps which are basically on no man's land neither jordan all the syrian regime nor the americans really feel responsible for that and of course the plight of these refugees gives rise to jihad as groups through militias vigilantes criminal gangs mafia smugglers whatever you can make what about israel in all of this we know that israel is threatening to get involved if syrian forces get too close to the one nine hundred seventy four cease fire longing to go on heights but you've got these displaced syrians flocking to the border. i mean are they safe they are and what happens if they cross that border.
9:12 pm
cynically one could assume that for the syrian regime and its allies this is not such a bad scenario to push refugees into israeli territory or at least disputed territory under israeli control and this comes just a few weeks after prime minister benjamin netanyahu has said publicly that the world should face reality eventually that this is israeli territory so if this is the case and it's going to be under but under israeli control as he said forever then he would be the one who. can take care of this because where is the point if you cannot oblige jordan to take in refugees and not israel. and i think this is also part of the very cynical calculation of the syrian regime i'm not so sure about the russian position here because so far the russians have played the role as as as a guarantor of also israeli interests there but they have not been successful with that so i think you have to bear in mind that the truth of the situation the golan heights is also not so easy for refugees to get in the fended off and. but i think
9:13 pm
the international community stands accused here because they haven't found a solution for this and we knew we knew that this would go this would happen there was no no doubt that it would happen and that what exactly happened this way you know you predicted it and not myself the united nations did everyone seen it come down you know it didn't go look as always we appreciate your insights thank you very much thank you for having. most of the. people. in.
