dude every news coming to you live from berlin china hits back for what it calls the largest trade war in history beijing slops or tell us more tariffs on certain u.s. products effective immediately this after the u.s. imposed duties on billions of dollars in chinese imports. authorities now say time is running out for twelve boys trapped inside a thai cave oxygen levels are dropping and more rain is coming meaning rescuers have to act fast they're going to get these boys out. and the world cup quarter
12:01 pm
finals kick off today will go to borg why or where an entire country is gearing up for their match against france expectations are high as is the nation's footballing pedigree and its passion for the game. in the show my name sara harmon china has slumped import duties on u.s. goods in what it calls the largest trade war in economic history responded immediately to new u.s. tariffs by imposing its own and says these tariffs are already in effect u.s. levies affect some eight hundred chinese products we're talking cars planes or drives the tune of about thirty four billion u.s. dollars meanwhile china or tell us more tariffs are likely to target u.s. agricultural products things like soybeans and pork and this conflict could escalate even further. donald trump said he has tariffs planned on over five
12:02 pm
hundred billion dollars worth of chinese imports meanwhile the u.s. chamber of commerce in china is warning that further escalating this could have devastating effects they're calling for urgent talks. are here with me in the studio is g.w. business anchor helena humphrey helena welcome we're hearing now that china has hit back where are we in this global trade dispute well all week we've been waiting for washington to impose those tariffs as they have threatened i once they go into effect beijing was expected to hit back or somatic it was already poised to do so we now have confirmation from the ministry of commerce in china that it's done just that right now we measure for measure level pegging because the us has imposed midnight last night tariffs on thirty four billion dollars worth of produce china has done the same it's interesting that china has chosen to target quite a few agricultural products if we look at that list aiming to target potentially
12:03 pm
pharmacy voted for trump in the midwest now china has also said that this trade war it's called a trade war has the prospect of being the largest in economic history so i put it to the heads over the international trade center out on chickens out as well if that was really the case or whether that was rhetoric on china's part let's take a listen. well i think we are facing the largest trade conflict since the second world war but more importantly is that this conflict is already having an impact on the ground it's already affecting workers that are being laid off as a result of the solutions especially in america to move out of the country and produce elsewhere given that it's having an impact on businesses that are not making capital investment decisions because of the uncertainty of the situation but let's not forget our taxes taxes that the consumer will have to pay it will make it is making already american consumers. pay more for the goods they buy and it's
12:04 pm
making american companies less competitive because. the inputs the import in their manufacturing chains will be more expensive so frankly who wins from this conflict is a big question mark today. who wins from this conflict but first what happens next where do we go from here so right now sarah i think it's fair to say that the ball is in washington's court u.s. president donald trump speaking on air force one said this could just be the beginning all tariffs on chinese products he said that they may raise them to five hundred billion dollars worth of products which is indeed huge there's the question is whether that's a threat whether that something is being used as a negotiation tactical whether something he will follow through on i think now it's fair to say that we'll expect to hear from the world trade organization the global trade body which the u.s. and china both sit in and meeting hundred sixty four other countries whether
12:05 pm
they'll want to sit down there whether there is that appetite for arbitration through the w t o is another question because we've already seen with that other trade conflict regarding the european union and the united states that there was potentially the appetite for the germans were negotiating on behalf of the european union and the u.s. to lift those tariffs on causal together circum navigating the body w t i was already issued a warning on that front and says if you go lifting tariffs by yourselves without guidance the impact could potentially be worse than what we saw during the global financial crisis in two thousand and eight are when we look at this trade dispute between the u.s. and china who if anyone has the edge of this point past as prologue that warning from the i.m.f. which was a trade was not something that can be won the one nine hundred thirty s. was the example of that we do know who stands to lose that's the consumerist that's global growth is one of supply chains as well it's not just about the united states it's not just about china all those asian economies which produce materials as well
12:06 pm
to supply for products so there's a lot at stake here sara a lot at stake thanks for walking us through it and i will be having more from you in just a bit now among the u.s. imports that are likely to face chinese tariffs or cars and agricultural products like soybeans but lobster lovers could also find themselves in hot water very soon . live lobster from the u.s. weighing around two and a half kilograms costs approximately five hundred yuan or seventy five dollars at seafood markets in beijing american lobsters have long had a reputation in china previous size and the high quality of the meat but chinese customers who enjoy this delicacy are about to feel an if people's the chinese government has threatened to slap an additional twenty five percent import duty on this luxury menu item chinese wholesalers who import these cross stations will have to work out how to live with the high tariffs it was a good year. for you don't know what there's nothing much we can do if there's
12:07 pm
a trade war or we can do is adjust our supply chain here depending on the size of price increases. if the chinese government follows through with its threat the u.s. lobster industry could feel the pinch losing its edge over rivals such as canada and australia that will hurt the americans last year china imported about one hundred twenty eight million dollars worth of live lobsters from the u.s. accounting for fifteen to twenty percent of total u.s. lobster exports. a while what this means for europe and possibly for germany let's go to comrade bruce and he's standing by at the frankfurt stock exchange for us conrad trunk's trade policies could have big implications for germany after all this is a country whose economy relies heavily on exports is there concern in frankfurt this morning. yes there is of course some of the german companies will be immediately affected by terrorists for example the chinese tariffs on s.u.v.s
12:08 pm
you know many of the s.u.v.s that b.m.w. and dialer sell in china are actually made in the united states and exported from there to china then you have the ripple effect of the tariffs many electronic parts and other stuff that's made in china and exported gets more expensive even if it's not exported to the united states immediately but to germany price increases are expected and then of course last but not least there is the negative effect on business sentiment worldwide germany one of the most interconnected economies of the world has to fear that many of the markets where our businesses are operating sentiment is going to go down. and i think it's best say these are hefty concerns that we're seeing now with that in mind conrad what's the mood like there how is this playing out on the markets. well for the moment the stock market here in
12:09 pm
frankfurt is holding up relatively well of course let's not forget all the loss of that scene in recent weeks the holding up has to do with the fact that also in asia even on the chinese mainland a little bit off demand has come up on this day that this trade war you know started the the fact that the stock markets are doing relatively well has to do with the fact that industrial metal prices have slumped of course the expectation that a word why it cannot make downswing will reduce demand for those metal is playing a role here so there's a short term positive impact of this but of course it's not good news and the long term impact of all this is negative everyone is. convinced that as you said before nobody's a winner in a protectionist trade war all right that's come out and bring us the view from frankfurt thanks very much. well turning now to thailand where rescuers say
12:10 pm
time is running out as they work to free twelve boys and their soccer coach trapped inside a flooded cave and just how dangerous this mission is has been reinforced by the death of a professional diver who is working to bring oxygen to the group maybe still say their work will continue in spite of that accident it's a race against time to reach these boys they're trapped here about four kilometers away from the entrance of this cave and as you can see it's completely cut off by water crews are trying to pump water out of the cave complex as fast as they can to make it easier for these boys to navigate their way back to the entrance but the group is still likely to have to dive through flooded parts of this cave and that is incredibly risky for monsoon rains are expected though and that's threatening to make conditions even worse so authorities say this rescue has to happen soon
12:11 pm
it's done dangerous work. water levels are high narrow passages flooded. and still the volunteers continue their mission but with news that a former tiny navy diver has died no one can ignore the risks involved. some in pune and who was thirty eight had successfully delivered tanks event to the trapped boys and their football coach but he lost consciousness on his dive back it is very risky please think about it a navy seal just passed away last night so how about a twelve year old kid. there's a renewed sense of urgency to find a way to free the twelve boys and their coach they've been stuck in this cave for almost two weeks with oxygen levels drilling and more heavy rain expected officials are aware there is no time to lose. previously we thought the boys could live there
12:12 pm
for a long time. but now everything is changed by we really only have a limited time. for the boys relatives it makes the waiting even harder. over you know what i mean you say and it is still dangerous to come out here and polite. for that but i'm worried he's never dived but can swim a little right now. rescuers are trying to provide a line of air to reach the youth football team but as they're trapped for kilometers inside the cave nothing about this operation is straightforward. overweightness we're joined now on the line by pan no one char omar reuters correspondent is out the rescue site in thailand now rescuers originally had said the best option might be to wait for water levels to recede after monsoon season
12:13 pm
tell us why is that no longer viable. well the position could get much one when the brain contiki two thousand thought was issued yes that's after the fact. helps all the boys trapped inside. if they waited longer they might see that the average there and might also be from the date of. may well i think they have to use that weekend facebook it's very critical right now it's easy. to find ways to get rescuers to you have to get the boys out but at the moment it's probably several ways to get this work. what do you know about the boys condition are they strong enough for a grueling rescue operation at this point. well we are told.
12:14 pm
all the most wise we should like all of these guys to give a pretty boy. much worse condition. than time to really get that help. people out of those dividing them get supplies of food and medical attention. that you're already out of that jail is a lot to watch it may take malted four five hours more than six hours to the time to maybe you take so in that sense we can see how difficult this operation really knew and that if you of experience and keep out of a guy along the road. it's not a quality because it's also a try just buying an outside a good piece. on a about well it has a lot of thought and speed up with small people. to try to so i read it as

a possible shop to say to give a thought about a disability as well though at the moment that it's through sort of. this is a strategy for the working fine exchanges that you have to granting that the watch . panu long chalk on the reuters correspondent on the scene there in thailand thanks for your reporting. staying in thailand divers have been scouring the hull of a boat full of tourists that sank in turbulent waters off a resort island off to catch the death toll has risen above twenty now but that number is expected to rise authorities say powerful winds and five metre high waves caused the vessel to overturn the rescue workers have pulled around fifty people to safety dozens more are still unaccounted for. here's a look now at some other stories making news around the world there's been a third night of rioting and not in western france around fifty cars were torched

a fireworks warehouse in central mexico council to use include rescuers who derive to help victims of the first blast tell me is known for its long tradition of making fireworks but also for its history deadly accidents. you're watching news still to come on our program or why one of the first ever world cup way back in one nine hundred thirty we'll take you to south america to find out about the nation's passion for the game ahead of their quarterfinal clash with france. a german chancellor angela merkel has reached a deal over migration after weeks of infighting that have threatened to topple her government the junior partners in her coalition the center left social democrats have signed on to her new tougher line in dealing with migrants is a key demand of her rebellious interior minister for city hall for who leads merkel's conservative bavarian sister party the c.s.u. so it's a truce for now but the rao has exposed just how fragile miracles splintered coalition
12:18 pm
is. it was last cabinet meeting before the summer break and a breakthrough on migration policy concerns people entering germany after they've already claimed asylum in a different european union country. the deal will mean faster transfer out of germany back to those countries where they first claimed asylum they'll be no kemp's migrants will be held in police stations while their papers a process the government but also draw up on immigration policy this year. is that kind of not there will be no unilateral action at a national level and no unilateral rejection of migrants at the board up we will implement an expedited border procedure instead we don't need any changes to the law for this it's all based on existing law so there will be absolutely no camps
12:19 pm
kind i lie larder. the grand coalition has been wrecked by weeks of infighting. macklin her interior minister haul see how far we are at loggerheads over what to do at the borders. germans are unimpressed when polling firm in try to steam up asked how satisfied are you with the government's performance a large majority more than three quarters said they were not only twenty one percent of voters said they were satisfied with the government's record. yet. only popularity has hardly suffered from the dispute she remains the country's most popular politician more than twenty percent ahead of her would be challenger see her for. well excitement is mounting because there are just eight teams remaining in the

world cup here to talk us through the upcoming quarter finals is next meryl from our sports us max great to have you here we've got argo i first as france today tell us what we can. well france went into the tournament as one of the big big favorites alongside germany spain and brazil germany and spain of course gone now so france even bigger favorites than before and possibly quite possibly mostly because of killian they have a great squad but he's really stood out as the star we can see him here warming up going through the motions in training he's ferociously fast only nineteen years old became the second most expensive player officially now in the transfer window although he moved last month's window and scored twice against argentina so he's going to be the man to watch on the flip side year ago i have a great footballing history and they've been fantastic in the tournament so far will talk a bit more about them but the history is incredible because they hosted the first world cup won the first world cup that was in one nine hundred thirty one of the

ghana nine hundred fifty since then not so much luck the best is a fourth place finish most recently at the twenty ten world cup but the traditions are really still very much alive and we checked out just how month or video the capital is preparing for the game. the whole country is gearing up for the quarterfinal match against france here in europe why we're football is more than just a game it's a raise on debt to. winning the round of sixteen match against portugal sparked an explosion of joy throughout the country. a party that lasted well into the night. on par with the team celebration in the dressing room after the match. yet but at the end it was from now on if we win or lose it doesn't matter we went this far i have no words. my

pregnant and if i give best to i go out who has said i stay. i have lost some less to the sky blues as the national team is called have impressed so far in russia. and the whole of or of y. is dreaming of big things to come. easily she was there was that your rebellion folksongs that has never favorites we always come from behind that's all reality but in a sudden sense i think we take some pride from that. all of require hopes they can party again on friday. but regardless of the result of hero's welcome for the last the last day whether after this round the next or even the final. is a certain. fact everyone loves an underdog but france for so strong against argentina does are quite really have a chance here well you're right they are the underdog until about as said as much as well the coach himself but their real competition side have great fighting
12:23 pm
spirit leave every last ounce of energy on the pitch and they've had the best defense in the world cups of all so that's going to be tricky to break down and they'll be boid by the fact that france lets in three against a fairly weak argentina side in the previous round the problem for your guy will not be the defense will be the attack star striker edinson cavani is injured and looks to be out of the fixture although your guy themselves have still not confirmed whether or not he will play here we can see him training on his own without the team he seems to be at least able to move which is encouraging but it's going to be a last minute fitness test and here we see lewis was touching his knee he's just had a little knock in training the other star striker for them he will be playing we were informed but the two of them they just have this great partnership reminiscent of the old striking partnerships which we don't really see that much anymore so a real risk for them if they do play in from the start i suspect he'll make the

bench and i can see france winning this one ok all right well so what will leave our hopes with the underdog may the best team win let's turn to brazil versus belgium for just a second here neymar is a standout player for the five time champions but before i ask about the game let's hear what the coach had to say about his talents. with neymar it's not just with the ball and not just dribbling yes there are moves and defensive transitions if you look you will see how much he's been participating in the group that use. is today going to be any different well i think you know you struggle a little bit in this world cups of thought he did school in the last game which will put his confidence up and this so much pressure and we saw him break down in tears off to one of brazil's win and he set off at the end because of all that pressure that's on him criticism criticism from many fans has been his diving this world cup he's hit the deck quite a lot he spent a total of fourteen minutes on the floor in the last four matches and on the

internet the reactions have been quite funny we've seen some kids in switzerland being coached in how to do the name. so yes the kids at least not copying him i think they realize this is just such and well as role models do evidence of maybe stay on their feet a little bit more naima has been guilty of not doing that too much but maybe some name on magic will decide this time if he spends more time on his feet or on the floor but if any team can stop brazil belgium must be a good bet oh for sure i mean they match brazil in terms of the stop power that they have up top remember lukaku the striker for manchester united and cross midfield and defense all really good players that would probably make it into every side in this world cup barring maybe brazil and fronts they've been a little bit defensively frail as exposed in the guy game against japan where they went less in two goals and had to come back from
12:26 pm
a goal down to win that match three two but again that could be in their favor in this match because they've shown that fighting spirit showing that they can come back after going down so i think it's going to be a really thrilling match possibly the best match of the tournament so far but saying i heard yes saying that two favorites sometimes can make for a boring clash because they're both so good but i expect that to be quite a lot of goals of them for three to myself i think there's a little bit i just but a great game that could have been a final game i'm not going to take that and use it to bet on but i'll keep it in mind tomorrow see if you are right just briefly a bit of turmoil closer to home. i'm here with the german football association what's going on there yes the team manager all of a b a healthy kind of acts as the go between between the press a lot and the players he's come out and talked about the add on affair now this is what he's had to say we have a full germany players to do anything but we do try to convince them we didn't succeed with mesut ozil that is so we should have considered dropping him from a sporting point of view now i'm going to on i'll remind you we're caught up with
12:27 pm
that affair where they took pictures with the president that's of type two on and off yes both of them of to origin now the german media has really jumped on this and some have been really attacking but i think he says that considering it wasn't necessary necessity drama drama drama max miles from our sport says thanks so much . quick reminder of the top stories d.w. is following for you this hour china's foreign ministry says that retaliatory tariffs on certain u.s. products have gone into effect it said they began at noon beijing time immediately after washington imposed on thirty four billion dollars worth of chinese employers . that's your news europe today i'm sara harmon and thanks for watching.
