by helicopter and ambulance to hospital. after days of preparation expert foreign divers and members of the time navy's elite seal unit launched a daring and dangerous mission to rescue the youngsters and their coach the hazardous nature of the operation highlighted by the death of a diver on friday. the boys and their rescuers must travel four kilometers from the elevated shelf where they were found to the entrance to the cave each boy will be tethered to two divers who will supply them with their fixed ropes and lights have been installed to guide the group through the darkness and tanks strategically placed along the route for resupply the t. junction or sam yak is the most critical part and narrow fork where there's only room for one person at a time here they will have to remove their tanks and dive through to the dry area as night fell the rescue mission halted to give the teams time to get ready for the

next phase of the operation and. we will continue the rescue operation when we are ready we need to lay out all the air tanks along the way again we have used up everything we had today. some ninety divers are taking part and thirteen separate medical teams have been lined up one for the coach and one for each of the twelve boys bringing them out will be a long and painstaking process each trip will take several hours. you know obvious florian news has been reporting extensively from the scene for us he sent us his assessment of a momentous day. it is the end of an exhort unary and very long day here in the north of thailand early this morning we were presented with an official timeline of when the first boys would actually be extracted from the cave then all of a sudden wee hours prior to this original timeline we first heard only rumors and
8:04 pm
a few hours later the official confirmation that four boys have actually been able to to get out of this cave they are in stable health conditions they have been transferred to the provincial hospital about sixty kilometers away from where we are right now and the mood here in this makeshift press camp as well as anywhere around has been very very enthusiastic for the last few hours this news that they actually made it stows for boys really was met with grades searing and so one can safely say that the first stage of this rescue mission has been a success now what we mustn't forget is that even though four boys hours nine are still trapped in the cave and as you can see it is raining right now and it is
8:05 pm
still a race against time and weather so this daunting mission here in the north of thailand is far from over. we're joined on line now by and sorenson he's a veteran rescue diver and a regional coordinator of the international underwater caves rescue and recovery organization mr sorenson thank you for taking the time to speak with us can you give us an idea of how these kids could have been trained to dive in just mere days . i mean. really. they're just getting the basics. and they're just getting you know i can speculate i'm here they're there but. they're going to get just the basics on how to keep the regulator out like kind of thing just enough so that these rescuers and escort them out of the gaze hopefully the rest of america although they've got this first wave
8:06 pm
out and. beating all odds so so for a good outcome for us you calling it a miracle really highlights the difficulties of these kids and the rescue divers are facing a lot of people think that swimming is a crucial skill to have for diving we know that some of the boys can't swim is swimming really that important for this process well in this particular instance they're not going to be doing a whole lot of slowing. thing that swimming does for people used to being submerged in the water when they needed yes it's a good skill to have so there's a lot of skills that in learning to cave diving into a dive are really essential for this kind of thing to try and keep the stressful down so having the boys if it out. limited limited knowledge
8:07 pm
job is all the worst possible conditions. against all odds and against all odds can you think of how resilient these kids are i mean some of them as i mentioned don't even know how to swim and diving for most people is a something of a do for fun these kids have to now do it to save their own lives. well they showed their resiliency when just a lasting nine days in the dark with no water and when the rescue workers got there first they didn't know if anybody was coming all they had was hope. and to be as calm as they were it showed extraordinary resilience so these kids look like they're tough enough to go through this but and. he spoke about being calm what do you do as a rescuer if someone that you're trying to save begins to panic and that's something that we can imagine especially given the difficult conditions in this enclosed space well you know i can't speak about there
8:08 pm
but having the. victim remain calm is crucial because they've been known that they are the rescuer died so. there's there's so many characters to stress here the overhead is just being underwater using equipment that never used before there's so many things that anyone even an experienced diver and banning. just the fact that those first four got out safely just incredible so for us to also add sorenson with international underwater cave rescue and recovery organization thank you very much for your insights. now to some of the other stories making news around the world turkish state television says ten people have been killed and dozens more injured after

world cup hosts russia have been hailed as heroes despite losing to croatia in a nailbiting penalty shoot out thousands of cheering fans greeted the team back in moscow today at the capital spend fast to bring us up to date on the world cup i'm joined in studio by nick mechanic line from sports nick this match had all the twists and turns of world cup classic sort of a date it was quite tense and they had this seats of course because it went all the way to the ninetieth minute and then to penalties there's a certain amount of back and forth which is lovely for the neutral fan but of course the fans the two teams would have been really a bit worried russia were hoping to reach the first world cup semifinals since nine hundred sixty six of course back then as the soviet union but unfortunately failed croatia held out a let's see how they go. the host took us shockley just past the half hour will mock am denny's chair a chef smashing home his fourth goal of the tournament since spectacular star i
8:11 pm
believe was short lived however as that draco marriage headed home less than ten minutes later to level the scores. a goal the second half meant extra time and after a short break the croatia took the lead to mccoy rising highest from a corner to one. but russia one ton mario financial has made it too warm to send the match into penalties. and off to russia missed two of their spot kicks it came down to even rockets hit and the parsimony midfielder kept his cool sending croatia into delirium. for their opponents russia their world cup is now. plenty of drama perhaps nick more than many were expecting in that match where does russia go from here while our world cup correspondent ali moody sent us this update . for a couple of hours last night fans here at the fish stadium in sochi created noise
8:12 pm
levels like i've never heard in a stadium before but then it all went very quiet but while russian fans deal with their disappointment they should focus on the positives their team performs far above and beyond what anyone could have expected before the tournament and gave the nation many moments to cherish and they could produce results for years to come as well a generation of kids can't help but be inspired by the performances here and the way that the country has been swept up in the enthusiasm a generation of kids that will want to be the next a go i can fire a dentist chair a chef autons uva and that is the real game for russia from this tournament. so it wasn't to be for russia but glory be for croatia how special was this win for them it's incredible for them of course because in the second time they've reached a welcome semifinal the last time twenty years ago in france but football is never just football in croatia it's before the tournament there was mixed feelings from the fans they weren't sure if there's a person support the team or not because quite often in the past politicians views the football team's success for their own political gain so there was this far
8:13 pm
reaching social implicitly and political implications but in the pictures we saw last night you see how these fans were celebrating how much they enjoyed the fact the creation had reached the semifinals and the football federation said for a while they want the image of the national team to unify creation and just seeing here they really have done that to maybe his run at this world cup will be the connecting tissue needed to kind of bring him things back together and they can continue on that run but they have an obstacle standing in their way in the next match they do indeed the obstacle is in england of course they beat sweden yesterday two nil and a massive performance from them we can actually forget what sweden did before this tournament they they stopped holland from making the world cup they beat italy in the playoffs they of course and he just narrowly lost against germany they're actually a very good team but end of last night dominates that game winning two nil england aren't just harry kane for example when he's scoring all the goals it was other players where he was studying who's been getting a lot of criticism recently is actually doing really important runs to open up play you've got jordan henderson and john stones who are keeping the structure for
8:14 pm
england of course jordan pickford the goalkeeper funny thing the goalkeeper who's actually good at what he's supposed to be doing southgate is playing this team to their strengths whether it's from set pieces or how they run and finally end and have a chance to perform well at the tournament and it's going to crack in game wednesday when they face gratiot moscow nic mechanic line from sports thank you very much. one final piece of football news to bring you the spanish football federation has announced fernando gero will not continue as national team coach jarrett was part of shoot it into the job just one day before the world cup started following the sacking of who an alibi take but spain struggled at the tournament and were knocked out in the last sixteen by hosts russia gero a former real madrid and spain defender has chosen not to return to his previous role as sporting director. watching t w news more coming up at the top of the hour with my colleague helena humphrey and don't forget you can get the
